Biochar mitigates the postponed bioavailability and toxicity of phthalic acid esters in the soil

Observed nowadays wide pollution of the environment with microplastic and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) (such as dimethyl phthalate, DMP; diethyl phthalate, DEP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP; benzyl butyl phthalate, BBP; di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP and di-n-octyl phthalate, DNOP) is a result of their increased production and usage. Weak bonding with polymer matrix enables their easier mobilization in the environment and increased bioavailability. The aim of the presented studies was the estimation of the fate of six priority PAEs in the soil-vegetable system and the application of biochar to immobilize PAEs in the soil preventing their bioavailability to lettuce. Both the acute (one full lettuce development period) and prolongated effect (lettuce cultivated after 10 weeks from the first PAEs contamination) were estimated to examine the long-time exposure under crop rotation. The addition of 1 % of corn-derived biochar immobilized PAEs in the soil efficiently (up to 4 times increased concentration) with the following order: DBP < DEP < DMP < DEHP < DNOP < BBP. Bioavailable PAEs were determined in lettuce roots (DMP, BBP, DEHP), and lettuce leaves (DEP, DBP, DNOP) but the presence of biochar lowered their content. PAEs, although not available for lettuce, were available for other organisms, confirming that the bioavailability or lack of nutrients is of great importance in PAEs-polluted soil. In long-time experiments, without biochar amendment, all PAEs were 3-12 times more bioavailable and were mainly accumulated in lettuce roots. The biochar addition significantly reduces (1.5-11 times) PAEs bioavailability over time. However, the PAEs content in roots remained significantly higher in samples with crop rotation compared to samples where only lettuce was grown. The results confirmed that biochar addition to the soil reduces their bioavailability and mobility inside the plant, limiting their transport from roots to leaves and reducing the exposure risk but confirming that lettuce leaves may be a safe food when cultivated in PAEs-polluted soil.

Increased oxygen content in biochar lowered bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-related toxicity to various organisms

Agricultural or environmental application of biochar (BC) is connected with the introduction of biochar-derived components among which polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals are the most toxic. Their presence and bioavailability are crucial considering biochar toxicity. The effect of feedstock and pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical properties of produced biochar and contaminant content was established and combined with toxicity to a broad range of living organisms. The obtained data revealed that predicting the bioavailability of PAHs using the total content is misleading. The toxicity was influenced by factors in the following way: the bioavailable PAHs > ash > total PAHs content in BC stressing the role of BC physicochemical characteristics. Among tested BC properties, surface functionalization, e.g. presence of oxygen-containing functional groups was crucial in revealing the toxicity. The data clearly indicate that additional research is required to determine BC's impact on various organisms and performing one ecotoxicity test is not sufficient.

Surfactant Directionally Assembled at the Electrode-Electrolyte Interface for Facilitating Electrocatalytic Aldehyde Hydrogenation

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes to unsaturated alcohols is a promising alternative to conventional thermal processes. Both the catalyst and electrolyte deeply impact the performance. Designing the electrode-electrolyte interface remains challenging due to its compositional and structural complexity. Here, we employ the electrocatalytic hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as a reaction model. The typical cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and its analogs are employed as electrolyte additives to tune the interfacial microenvironment, delivering high-efficiency hydrogenation of HMF and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The surfactants experience a conformational transformation from stochastic distribution to directional assembly under applied potential. This oriented arrangement hampers the transfer of water molecules to the interface and promotes the enrichment of reactants. In addition, near 100 % 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) selectivity is achieved, and the faradaic efficiency (FE) of the BHMF is improved from 61 % to 74 % at -100 mA cm-2. Notably, the microenvironmental modulation strategy applies to a range of electrocatalytic hydrogenation reactions involving aldehyde substrates. This work paves the way for engineering advanced electrode-electrolyte interfaces and boosting unsaturated alcohol electrosynthesis efficiency.

Switching Reaction Pathways of CO2 Electroreduction by Modulating Cations in the Electrochemical Double Layer

Tuning the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) solely by changing electrolyte is a very attractive topic. In this study, we conducted CO2RR in different aqueous electrolytes over bulk metal electrodes. It was discovered that controlled CO2RR could be achieved by modulating cations in the electrochemical double layer. Specifically, ionic liquid cations in the electrolyte significantly inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while yielding high Faraday efficiencies toward CO (FECO) or formate (FEformate) depending on the alkali metal cations. For example, the product could be switched from CO (FECO=97.3 %) to formate (FEformate=93.5 %) by changing the electrolyte from 0.1 M KBr-0.5 M 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (OmimBr) to 0.1 M CsBr-0.5 M OmimBr aqueous solutions over pristine Cu foil electrode. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the ordered structure generated by the assembly of Omim+ under an applied negative potential alters the hydrogen bonding structure of the interfacial water, thereby inhibiting the HER. The difference in selectivity in the presence of different cations is attributed to the hydrogen bonding effect caused by Omim+, which alters the solvated structure of the alkali metal cations and thus affects the stabilization of intermediates of different pathways.

Short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine-passivated CsPbBr3 nanocrystals for efficient green light emitting diodes

Inorganic cesium lead bromide nanocrystals (CsPbBr3 NCs) hold promising prospects for high performance green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their exceptional color purity and high luminescence efficiency. However, the common ligands employed for passivating these indispensable NCs, such as long-chain organic ligands like oleic acid and oleylamine (OA/OAm), display highly dynamic binding and electronic insulating issues, thereby resulting in a low efficiency of the as-fabricated LEDs. Herein, we report a new zwitterionic short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine ligand, namely trioctyl(propyl-3-sulfonate) ammonium betaine (TOAB), to in situ passivate CsPbBr3 NCs via a feasible one-step solution synthesis, enabling efficiency improvement of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs. The zwitterionic TOAB ligand not only strengthened the surface passivation of CsPbBr3 NCs with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 97%, but also enhanced the carrier transport in the fabricated CsPbBr3 NC thin films due to the short-branched alkyl design. Consequently, CsPbBr3 NCs passivated with TOAB achieved a green LED with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.3% and a maximum luminance of 5716 cd m-2, surpassing those of LEDs based on insulating long-chain ligand-passivated NCs. Our work provides an effective surface passivation ligand design to enhance the performance of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs.

Mechanistic Insights into Surfactant-Modulated Electrode-Electrolyte Interface for Steering H2O2 Electrosynthesis

Electrocatalytic reactions taking place at the electrified electrode-electrolyte interface involve processes of proton-coupled electron transfer. Interfacial protons are delivered to the electrode surface via a H2O-dominated hydrogen-bond network. Less efforts are made to regulate the interfacial proton transfer from the perspective of interfacial hydrogen-bond network. Here, we present quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactants as electrolyte additives for enhancing the H2O2 selectivity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Through in situ vibrational spectroscopy and molecular dynamics calculation, it is revealed that the surfactants are irreversibly adsorbed on the electrode surface in response to a given bias potential range, leading to the weakening of the interfacial hydrogen-bond network. This decreases interfacial proton transfer kinetics, particularly at high bias potentials, thus suppressing the 4-electron ORR pathway and achieving a highly selective 2-electron pathway toward H2O2. These results highlight the opportunity for steering H2O-involved electrochemical reactions via modulating the interfacial hydrogen-bond network.

Long-Term Thermal Stability of Ionic Surfactants for Improving Oil Production at High-Salinity High-Temperature Conditions

Surfactants with stable chemical structures and robust ability are required to lower interfacial tension and stabilize emulsions for successful chemical injection applications. This work selected six surfactants, dodecyl carboxylic sodium (LAS), dodecyl sulfonate dodecyl sodium (SLS), dodecyl sulfate sodium (SDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), 3-(N,N-dimethylmyristylammonio) propanesulfonate (SB3-14) and a sulfobetaine formulation (PCT-10), and systematically investigated the ionic-type effects on thermal stability at 95 °C for 150 days in high-salinity water (total dissolved solids (TDS) = 57,600 ppm). With characterizations of aged samples performed through a spinning drop tensiometer, high-performance liquid chromatography, and infrared spectroscopy, it can be seen that the long-term stability sequence of ionic surfactants in solutions is sulfobetaine ≈ quaternary ammonium > sulfonate > sulfate > carboxylate. The carboxylate possibly precipitates out from the solution in the acid form, and the sulfonate and sulfate decompositions are due to the hydrolysis of the anionic head, forming alcohol and NaHSO3/NaHSO4. Obvious decomposition of sulfobetaine and quaternary ammonium was not observed, but these molecules might suffer the elimination of the ionic head, forming the corresponding alkene and amine. The results also show that the dissolved oxygen in the solution preparation significantly sped up the degradation of sulfonates. At last, the emulsion stability tests of crude oil in surfactant solutions showed that sulfobetaine surfactants retained the highest emulsifying ability after thermal aging and thus are promising candidates for long-term chemical injection in high-temperature high-salinity reservoirs.

Electrochemical carbon-carbon coupling with enhanced activity and racemate stereoselectivity by microenvironment regulation

Enzymes are characteristic of catalytic efficiency and specificity by maneuvering multiple components in concert at a confined nanoscale space. However, achieving such a configuration in artificial catalysts remains challenging. Herein, we report a microenvironment regulation strategy by modifying carbon paper with hexadecyltrimethylammonium cations, delivering electrochemical carbon-carbon coupling of benzaldehyde with enhanced activity and racemate stereoselectivity. The modified electrode-electrolyte interface creates an optimal microenvironment for electrocatalysis-it engenders dipolar interaction with the reaction intermediate, giving a 2.2-fold higher reaction rate (from 0.13 to 0.28 mmol h-1 cm-2); Moreover, it repels interfacial water and modulates the conformational specificity of reaction intermediate by facilitating intermolecular hydrogen bonding, affording 2.5-fold higher diastereomeric ratio of racemate to mesomer (from 0.73 to 1.82). We expect that the microenvironment regulation strategy will lead to the advanced design of electrode-electrolyte interface for enhanced activity and (stereo)selectivity that mimics enzymes.

Non-Covalent Interactions Mimic the Covalent: An Electrode-Orthogonal Self-Assembled Layer

Charge-transfer events central to energy conversion and storage and molecular sensing occur at electrified interfaces. Synthetic control over the interface is traditionally accessed through electrode-specific covalent tethering of molecules. Covalent linkages inherently limit the scope and the potential stability window of molecularly tunable electrodes. Here, we report a synthetic strategy that is agnostic to the electrode's surface chemistry to molecularly define electrified interfaces. We append ferrocene redox reporters to amphiphiles, utilizing non-covalent electrostatic and van der Waals interactions to prepare a self-assembled layer stable over a 2.9 V range. The layer's voltammetric response and in situ infrared spectra mimic those reported for analogous covalently bound ferrocene. This design is electrode-orthogonal; layer self-assembly is reversible and independent of the underlying electrode material's surface chemistry. We demonstrate that the design can be utilized across a wide range of electrode material classes (transition metal, carbon, carbon composites) and morphologies (nanostructured, planar). Merging atomically precise organic synthesis of amphiphiles with in situ non-covalent self-assembly at polarized electrodes, our work sets the stage for predictive and non-fouling synthetic control over electrified interfaces.

Antifungal Activity of Nanobiocomposite Films Based on Silver Nanoparticles Obtained Through Green Synthesis

The high incidence of Candida albicans infections has raised concerns regarding side effects and drug resistance, compounded by a limited number of alternative drugs. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have prominent antimicrobial activity, but effective administration remains a challenge. In this study, AgNPs were synthesized via a green chemistry approach, using glucose as a reducing agent, and incorporated into an agar matrix to form a film (AgFilm). The AgNPs and AgFilm were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopic (AFM). The UV-Vis spectra of the AgNPs and AgFilm showed bands at 415 and 413 nm, respectively. The PXRD and UV-Vis data suggest that the growth of AgNPs was effectively inhibited in the AgFilm. The diameter of AgNPs dispersed in AgFilm was 76 ± 42 nm, and the thickness of the film and 35 ± 3 µm. The antifungal activity of AgFilm was evaluated against 20 strains of C. albicans, demonstrating high antifungal activity with an inhibition zone of 19 ± 2 mm. Therefore, AgFilm could be a promising option for the treatment of superficial C. albicans infections.

Using Raman Spectroscopy and Molecular Dynamics to Study Conformation Changes of Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate Molecules

A study using both Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was carried out for alkyl ethoxysulfate (AES) surfactants at various concentrations in solution. Direct comparison between experiment and simulation shows that the conformational changes observed in MD are in good agreement with those obtained via Raman spectroscopy. We show that there is an increase in the relative number of trans conformations with increasing concentration and illustrate the relationship between phase structure and molecular conformation, which is often speculated but difficult to confirm. Our results open up the possibility of applying MD to other surfactants, with the aim of analyzing conformational behavior, which can typically be difficult to study experimentally using spectroscopy methods, due to large numbers of vibrational modes present in large complex molecules.

Spectroelectrochemical Studies of CTAB Adsorbed on Gold Surfaces in Perchloric Acid

The behaviour of CTAB adsorbed on polycrystalline gold electrodes has been studied using a combination of spectroelectrochemical methods. The results indicate that the formation of the layer is the consequence of the precipitation of the CTAB micelles on the electrode surface as bromide ions, which stabilize the micelles, are replaced by perchlorate anions. This process leads to the formation of CTA⁺ layers in which perchlorate ions are intercalated, in which the adlayer suffers a continuous rearrangement that leads to the formation of micro-dominions of different types of hydrogen-bonded water populations throughout the adlayer. After prolonged cycling, a stable situation is reached. Under these conditions, water molecules permeate through the adlayer toward the electrode surface at potentials positive of the potential of zero charge, due to the repulsion between the CTA⁺ layer and the positive charge of the electrode.

Influence of the anionic structure and central atom of a cation on the properties of LCST-type draw solutes for forward osmosis

Thermo-responsive ionic compounds were synthesized to examine if they have a powerful ability to draw solutes for forward osmosis (FO). The investigated compounds were tetrabutylammonium benzenesulfonate, tetrabutylphosphonium benzenesulfonate, tetrabutylammonium 2-naphthalenesulfonate, and tetrabutylphosphonium 2-naphthalenesulfonate (abbreviated as [N₄₄₄₄][BS], [P₄₄₄₄][BS], [N₄₄₄₄][NS], and [P₄₄₄₄][NS]). The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) characteristics of the materials that formed the monocyclic aromatic compound [BS] were not confirmed; however, the LCSTs of others that formed the bicyclic aromatic compound [NS] were confirmed to be approximately 37 °C ([N₄₄₄₄][NS]) and 19 °C ([P₄₄₄₄][NS]) at 20 wt% in aqueous solutions; this is valued in reducing the energy required for recovery of the draw solute. In addition, it suggests that ammonium-based ionic compounds have a higher recovery temperature than phosphonium-based ionic compounds. When an active layer was oriented to a draw solution (AL-DS mode) and using 20 wt% aqueous [N₄₄₄₄][NS] draw solution at room temperature, water and reverse solute fluxes were about 3.07 LMH and 0.58 gMH, respectively. Thus, this is the first study to investigate structural transformations of the anion and central atom of the cation and to examine prospective draw solutes of the FO system in this series.

Thermo-responsive ionic compounds having lower critical solution temperature were utilized as a draw solute for eco-sustainable forward osmosis.

Spiropyran/Merocyanine Amphiphile in Various Solvents: A Joint Experimental–Theoretical Approach to Photophysical Properties and Self-Assembly

This joint experimental-theoretical work focuses on molecular and photophysical properties of the spiropyran-containing amphiphilic molecule in organic and aqueous solutions. Being dissolved in tested organic solvents, the system demonstrates positive photochromism, i.e., upon UV stimulus the colorless spiropyran form is transformed into colorful merocyanine isomer. However, the aqueous solution of the amphiphile possesses a negative photochromism: the orange-red merocyanine form becomes thermodynamically more stable in water, and both UV and vis stimuli lead to the partial or complete photobleaching of the solution. The explanation of this phenomenon is given on the basis of density functional theory calculations and classical modeling including thermodynamic integration. The simulations reveal that stabilization of merocyanine in water proceeds with the energy of ca. 70 kJ mol−1, and that the Helmholtz free energy of hydration of merocyanine form is 100 kJ mol−1 lower as compared to the behavior of SP isomer in water. The explanation of such a difference lies in the molecular properties of the merocyanine: after ring-opening reaction this molecule transforms into a zwitterionic form, as evidenced by the electrostatic potential plotted around the opened form. The presence of three charged groups on the periphery of a flat conjugated backbone stimulates the self-assembly of merocyanine molecules in water, ending up with the formation of elongated associates with stack-like building blocks, as shown in molecular dynamics simulations of the aqueous solution with the concentration above critical micelle concentration. Our quantitative evaluation of the hydrophilicity switching in spiropyran/merocyanine containing surfactants may prompt the search for new systems, including colloidal and polymeric ones, aiming at remote tuning of their morphology, which could give new promising shapes and patterns for the needs of modern nanotechnology.

Spectroscopic Studies of Zwitterionic DDAPS at Planar and Droplet Oil/Water Interfaces

Developing the knowledge on surfactant interfacial phenomena is highly valuable for the advancement of technological, commercial, and industrial products, as these applications often rely on interfacial and colloidal chemistry. Zwitterionic surfactants are a less toxic alternative to standard charged surfactants. With both positively charged quaternary ammonium and negatively charged sulfonate constituents, zwitterionic DDAPS can have diverse interfacial interactions with various coadditives. In this work, we investigate DDAPS adsorption to a planar oil/water interface and its stabilization of oil-in-water nanoemulsions. By studying both interfacial geometries with surface-specific, nonlinear spectroscopy, we gain deeper insights and a molecular perspective into DDAPS's behavior in the presence of various salts and cosurfactants. From an application standpoint, zwitterionic surfactants are often mixed with other chemicals or used in an environment with pre-existing chemicals (e.g., ocean water during oil remediation). Thus, it is important to understand how such coadditives alter DDAPS's behavior and its performance as an emulsifier. Our results show that DDAPS is nearly uninfluenced by coadditives at a planar oil/water interface, but the identical coadditives are crucial for DDAPS to form and stabilize nanoemulsions. Additionally, the surfactant packing properties vary between interfaces as well as coadditives, indicating that certain interactions with the DDAPS headgroup are stronger and play a greater role in tuning DDAPS's interfacial behavior.

A Hierarchical (Macro)molecular Assembly Assisted by Donor-Acceptor Charge-Transfer Interactions Exhibiting Room-Temperature Ferroelectricity

This communication reveals co-assembly of an electron-deficient naphthalene-diimide (NDI)-appended polyurethane (P1) and electron-rich pyrene (Py), forming an organogel with prominent room-temperature ferroelectricity. In a non-polar medium, intra-chain hydrogen-bonding among the urethane groups of P1 produces a folded structure with an array of the NDIs in the periphery, which intercalate Py by charge-transfer (CT)-interaction. Such CT-complexation enables slow crystallization of the peripheral hydrocarbons, causing gelation with nanotubular morphology, in which the wall consists of the alternating NDI-Py stack. Such D-A assembly exhibits ferroelectricity (saturation polarization P_s ≈0.8 μC cm^-2 and coercive field E_c ≈8 kV cm^-1 at 500 V and 10 Hz frequency) with Curie temperature (T_c ) of ≈350 K, which can be related to the disassembly of the CT-complex. In the absence of Py, P1 forms spherical aggregates, showing dielectric behaviour.

Solution Structures of Anionic-Amphoteric Surfactant Mixtures near the Two-Phase Region at Fixed pH

We examine the solution structures in a mixed surfactant system of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and N,N-dimethyldodecylamine N-oxide (DDAO) in water, on both sides of the two-phase boundary, employing dynamic light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The precipitate phase boundary was accessed by lowering pH to 8, from its floating pH 9.5 value, and was experimentally approached from the monomeric and micellar regions in three ways: at fixed DDAO or SDS concentrations and at a fixed (70:30) SDS:DDAO molar ratio. We characterize the size, shape, and interactions of micelles, which elongate approaching the boundary, leading to the formation of disk-like aggregates within the biphasic region, coexisting with micelles and monomers. Our data, from both monomeric and micellar solutions, indicate that the two phase structures formed are largely pathway-independent, with dimensions influenced by both pH and mixed surfactant composition. Precipitation occurs at intermediate stoichiometries with a similar SDS:DDAO ratio, whereas asymmetric stoichiometries form a re-entrant transition, returning to the mixed micelle phase. Overall, our findings demonstrate the effect of stoichiometry and solution pH on the synergistic interaction of mixed surfactants and their impact on phase equilibrium and associated micellar and two-phase structures.

Analytical Characterization of the Intercalation of Neutral Molecules into Saponite

Organo-modified layered materials characterization poses challenges due to their complexity and how other aspects such as contamination, preparation methods and degree of intercalation influence the properties of these materials. Consequently, a deep understanding of their interlayer organization is of utmost importance to optimize their applications. These materials can in fact improve the stability of photoactive molecules through intercalation, avoiding the quenching of their emission at the solid state, to facilitate their use in sensors or other devices. Two synthetic methods for the preparation of saponites with a cationic surfactant (CTABr) and a neutral chromophore (Fluorene) were tested and the obtained products were initially characterized with several complementary techniques (XRPD, SEM, TGA, IR, UV-Vis, Fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy), but a clear understanding of the organization of the guest molecules in the material could not be obtained by these techniques alone. This information was obtained only by thermogravimetry coupled with gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (TGA-GC-MS) which allowed identifying the species present in the sample and the kind of interaction with the host by distinguishing between intercalated and adsorbed on the surface.

Design and optimization of metformin hydrophobic ion pairs for efficient encapsulation in polymeric drug carriers

Loading small molecular weight hydrophilic drugs into polymeric carriers is a challenging task. Metformin hydrochloride (MET) is a highly soluble oral antidiabetic drug of small size and high cationic charge. Hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP) is an approach for reversible modulation of solubility and hydrophilicity of water-soluble drugs via complexation with oppositely charged molecules. Herein, we prepared MET ion pairs and carefully studied and characterized MET interaction with different ligands, with the aim of increasing MET lipophilicity and loading efficiency. HIP was successful using three hydrophilic anionic ligands; sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) Carbopol (CB) and tannic acid (TA). Electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding drove the complexation per spectroscopic and thermal studies. Complexation efficiency depended on ligand type and charge ratio. While complexes had varying interaction strengths, the excessive stability of TA/MET resulted in unfavorable poor MET dissociation. Notably, HIP imparted a 450 and tenfold lipophilicity increase for SDS/MET and CB/MET, respectively. The latter showed favorable controlled, yet complete release of MET at pH 6.8 and was loaded into alginate beads. Complex bulkiness and decreased lipophilicity resulted in a dramatic 88% increase of MET loading, demonstrating the success of HIP as a simple, efficient and applicable approach for modulating drug’s properties.

Dynamically Formed Surfactant Assembly at the Electrified Electrode-Electrolyte Interface Boosting CO2 Electroreduction

Electrocatalytic reactions occur in the nanoscale space at the electrified electrode-electrolyte interface. It is well known that the electrode-electrolyte interface, also called as interfacial microenvironment, is difficult to investigate due to the interference of bulk electrolytes and its dynamic evolution in response to applied bias potential. Here, we employ electrochemical co-reduction of CO₂ and H₂O on commercial Ag electrodes as a model system, in conjunction with quaternary ammonium cationic surfactants as electrolyte additives. We probe bias-potential-driven dynamic response of the interfacial microenvironment as well as the mechanistic origin of catalytic selectivity. By virtue of comprehensive in situ vibrational spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations, it is revealed that the structure of surfactants is dynamically changed from a random distribution to a nearly ordered assembly with increasing bias potential. The nearly ordered surfactant assembly regulates the interfacial water environment by repelling isolated water and suppressing water orientation into an ordered structure as well as promotes CO₂ enrichment at the electrified interface. Eventually, the formed hydrophobic-aerophilic interface microenvironment reduces the activity of water dissociation and increases the selectivity of CO₂ electroreduction to CO. These results highlight the importance of regulating the interfacial microenvironment by organic additives as a means of boosting the electrochemical performance in electrosynthesis and beyond.

Alkyl Silica Hybrid Nanowire Assembly in Improved Superhydrophobic Membranes for RO Filtration

Alkyl silica membranes and wires were synthesized by a sol-gel method, which has the capacity to control the size of the particles or membranes by controlling the reactions. Trimethoxyoctylsilane (C₈TMOS) was used as a chemical surfactant; poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as an emulsifier, dissolved in butanol for emulsion; and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor and a source of silica. An assembly of silica wires was fabricated on glass and cotton substrates by the dip-coating technique. Porous membranes and silica wires were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The contact angles of all of the samples were in the range of 140-154° as measured by ImageJ software, which confirmed the hydrophobic nature of the samples. The contact angle was increased by increasing the amount of the surfactant. Phase changes of silica wires and membranes were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. Chemical bonds of the sample were studied using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The band gap of silica nanowires was measured to be 3.8-3.4 eV using the UV-visible spectrum and decreased as compared to that of bulk silica. These silica-based porous membranes with enhanced transport properties can be used in filtration and separation techniques. This fabricated hybrid silica membrane showed ∼96% salt rejection within a permeation flux of 3.04 L/m² h.

A simple solution to the problem of selective detection of phosphate and arsenate by the molybdenum blue method

We report a simple and fast method for the quantification of both phosphate and arsenate in water using the molybdenum blue method. The method does not require established pre-treatment procedures for physically separating arsenate and phosphate or reducing the arsenate to arsenite. In our method, the heteropolymolybdate ions in the solution are precipitated and collected on a membrane that is transparent in both the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum. The phosphate is determined by recording a visible spectrum in transmission mode through the membrane. This membrane is then air-dried, and then an infrared spectrum is recorded through the membrane in transmission mode. The concentration of arsenate is then determined from the intensity of an As-O band positioned at 879 cm^-1 in the infrared spectrum. Using this method, a detection limit of 0.86 μg L^-1 phosphate and 13.9 μg L^-1 arsenate in water was achieved. Matrix spikes on environmental samples gave a 108% recovery of arsenate and a 105% recovery of phosphate over a dynamic range of 25-250 μg L^-1 of arsenate and phosphate in the sample.

Role of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate in Tailoring the Rheological Properties of High-Strength Gelatin Hydrogels

Gelatin hydrogels are widely used materials that may require surfactants to adjust their solution's surface tension for cell attachment, surface adsorption enhancement, or foaming. However, gelatin is a highly surface-active polymer, and its concentrated solutions usually do not require surfactants to achieve low surface tension. However, anionic surfactants, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), interact strongly with gelatin to form complexes that impact its hydrogels' rheological properties, influencing processability and functionality. Nevertheless, there is a lack of systematic research on the impact of these complexes on high gelatin content (i.e., high strength) hydrogels' rheological properties. In this work, the SDS/gelatin ratio-dependent viscoelastic properties (e.g., gel strength, gelation kinetics, and melting/gelling temperature) of high-strength gelatin hydrogels were investigated using rheology and correlated to surface tension, viscometry, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. SDS-gelatin ratio was proved to be an important factor in tailoring the rheological properties of gelatin hydrogels. The gel strength, gelation kinetics, and melting/gelling temperature of the gelatin hydrogels linearly increased with SDS incorporation up to a maximum value, from which they started to decline. The findings of this work have wide applicability in tailoring the properties of gelatin-SDS solutions and hydrogels during their processing.

High-Efficiency Biocidal Solution Based on Radiochemically Synthesized Cu-Au Alloy Nanoparticles

The use of nanotechnologies in the applied biomedical sciences can offer a new way to treat infections and disinfect surfaces, materials, and products contaminated with various types of viruses, bacteria, and fungi. The Cu-Au nanoparticles (NPs) were obtained by an eco-friendly method that allowed the obtaining in a one-step process of size controlled, well dispersed, fully reduced, highly stable NPs at very mild conditions, using high energy ionizing radiations. The gamma irradiation was performed in an aqueous system of Cu²⁺/Au³⁺/Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS)/Ethylene Glycol. After irradiation, the change of color to ruby-red was the first indicator for the formation of NPs. Moreover, the UV-Vis spectra showed a maximum absorption peak between 524 and 540 nm, depending on the copper amount. The Cu-Au NPs presented nearly spherical shapes, sizes between 20 and 90 nm, and a zeta potential of about −44 mV indicating a good electrostatic stability. The biocidal properties performed according to various standards applied in the medical area, in dirty conditions, showed a 5 lg reduction for Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus hirae, a 5 lg reduction for both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses such as Adenovirus type 5, Murine Norovirus, and human Coronavirus 229E, and a 4 lg reduction for Candida albicans, respectively. Thus, the radiochemically synthesized Cu-Au alloy NPs proved to have high biocide efficiency against the tested bacteria, fungi, and viruses (both encapsulated and non-encapsulated). Therefore, these nanoparticle solutions are suitable to be used as disinfectants in the decontamination of hospital surfaces or public areas characterized by high levels of microbiological contamination.

Preparation of Antimicrobial Coatings from Cross-Linked Copolymers Containing Quaternary Dodecyl-Ammonium Compounds

One of the concerns today’s societies face is the development of resistant pathogenic microorganisms. The need to tackle this problem has driven the development of innovative antimicrobial materials capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. The present study investigates the dependence of the antimicrobial activity and solubility properties on the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity ratio of antimicrobial coatings based on quaternary ammonium compounds. In this line, suitable hydrophilic and hydrophobic structural units were selected for synthesizing the antimicrobial copolymers poly(4-vinylbenzyl dimethyldodecylammonium chloride-co-acrylic acid), P(VBCDDA-co-AA20) and poly(dodecyltrimethylammonium 4-styrene sulfonate-co-glycidyl methacrylate), P(SSAmC₁₂-co-GMA20), bearing an alkyl chain of 12 carbons either through covalent bonding or through electrostatic interaction. The cross-linking reaction of the carboxylic group of acrylic acid (AA) with the epoxide group of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) of these two series of reactive antimicrobial copolymers was explored in blends, obtained through solution casting after curing at various temperatures. The release of the final products in pure water and NaCl 1 M solutions (as analyzed by gravimetry and total organic carbon, TOC/total nitrogen, TN analyses), could be controlled by the coating composition. The cross-linked polymeric membranes of composition 60/40 w/w % ratios led to 97.8 and 99.7% mortality for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), respectively, whereas the coating 20/80 w/w % resulted in 96.6 and 99.8% cell reduction. Despite the decrease in hydrophobicity (from a 16- to a 12-carbon alkyl chain), the new materials maintained the killing efficacy, while at the same time resulting in increased release to the aqueous solution.

Pharmaceutical Lauryl Sulfate Salts: Prevalence, Formation Rules, and Formulation Implications

The anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is known to deteriorate the dissolution of some drugs by forming poorly soluble lauryl sulfate (LS) salts. However, because of the perception of its infrequent occurrence, this phenomenon is usually not investigated in drug development until unexpected dissolution slowdown is encountered. This work demonstrates the prevalence of this phenomenon, where 14 out of 18 compounds with diverse chemical structures, including salts of basic drugs, a quaternary ammonium salt, organic bases, and zwitterionic molecules, precipitated from a solution when mixed with SLS. Although no precipitation was observed for the other 4 compounds, their FTIR spectra suggested 3 of them had intermolecular interactions with SLS when dried from a solution. These results, along with the 5 other examples reported in the literature, demonstrate the prevalence of this phenomenon. The occurrence of precipitation is thermodynamically driven by the relative difference between the ion product in solution (Q) and the solubility product of the lauryl sulfate salt (K_sp). SLS, as a surfactant, also affects precipitation kinetics by influencing the interfacial tension of nuclei of the insoluble salt. When a potential issue associated with the LS salt is identified, effective mitigation strategies should be proactively designed and implemented to alleviate its possible negative impact on drug dissolution.

Adsorption of Binary Mixture of Highly Positively Charged PTMA5M and Partially Negatively Charged PAA onto PSL Particles Studied by Means of Brownian Motion Particle Tracking and Electrophoresis

Effects of ionic strength on the adsorption of highly charged polycationic ((2-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) methyl chloride quaternary salt (PTMA5M) individually as well as in a binary mixture with polyanionic acrylic acid (PAA) onto polystyrene sulfate latex (PSL) particles with negative charges were investigated by means of Brownian movement particle tracking and measurement of electrophoretic mobility. In addition, the adsorption mechanism was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopic methods. The hydrodynamic thickness of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte layer (δ_H) and electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of particles as a function of concentration ratios of the two polyelectrolytes were measured to clarify the effect of negatively charged molecules on the structure of the positively charged adsorbed layer at various ionic strengths. Extremely thick δ_H was confirmed for the case of excess dosage of polycations. The δ_H decreased more significantly with the addition of PAA than increasing ionic strength. Interestingly, in the presence of PAA, the adsorbed layer thickness increased more at lower ionic strength than at higher ionic strength. In addition, the initial δ_H decreases remarkably after a time lapse of 1 h. Contrary to the decrease of the δ_H, almost all EPM either remained unchanged or increased over time depending on the concentration ratio of the two polyelectrolytes. Constant charge density, desorption of polyanions, and then reconformation of the adsorbed polycationic layer are proposed model components.

Efficient Rice-Husk-Derived Silica Nanocatalysts for Organic Dye Removal from Water

Rice is the second most extensively consumed food ingredient, and its by-products in the paddy field include rice husk and straw. Rice husk ash, resulting from rice husk burning, is considered an environment menace, inducing negative effects on the area in which it is disposed of. In this study, rice husk was applied as a silicate source to obtain mesoporous silica material. Characterization techniques confirmed the well-ordered mesophase and resemblance of mesoporous silica resulting from rice husk ash with one obtained from conventional silica sources. The mesoporous silica material was further used as catalyst support. The resulting catalysts were used for rhodamine 110 oxidation, proving high potential for oxidizing hazardous organic compounds, such as dyes from water, resulting in environmentally harmless products.

How Stabilizers and Reducing Agents Affect the Formation of Nanogold Amalgams

The influence of mercury on the morphology and formation mechanism of gold amalgams in the presence of different reducing agents (ascorbic acid and sodium borohydride) was systematically studied. In the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), chemical reducing agents not only reduced mercury ions in the solution but also replaced the CTAB molecules on the surface of the gold nanorod. The stability of the reducing agents in the colloidal system and the combining capacity of the reducing agent to the gold nanoparticles can affect the alloying process of mercury and gold, thereby forming a rod-shaped or spherical gold amalgam. Once CTAB was removed, a similar transformation process occurs between the gold nanorods and mercury. In addition, without the presence of a stabilizer, mercury that cannot be dispersed undergoes Ostwald ripening growth, which causes the gold amalgam nanoalloys to form a tip-to-tip structure as a result of mercury enrichment because of the weak shielding effects occurring at the tips of the gold nanorods. After the CTAB molecules were substituted with ascorbic acid and alkylthiol molecules, the question of whether the shielding effect weakened or disappeared was also investigated. By investigation, this research found that, in comparison to the blocking effect of CTAB molecules, the binding ability of the reducing agent to gold plays a dominant role in the nanoamalgam formation process.

Enhanced Static and Dynamic Properties of Highly Miscible Fullerene-Free Green-Selective Organic Photodetectors

We developed p-n junction organic photodetectors (OPDs) composed of a polymer donor and a nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) to increase both the responsivity (R) and detectivity (D*) while maintaining a narrow wavelength selectivity. The selection of the polymer donor and NFA with similar green (G) absorption is important for achieving G-wavelength selectivity in these OPDs, which differentiates them from current fullerene-based OPDs and NFA-based panchromatic absorption OPDs. In addition, mixing the polymer donor and asymmetric NFA was efficient toward increasing the miscibility and decreasing the interfacial energy difference of the blended films, resulting in the formation of a uniform and well-mixed nanomorphology in the photoconductive layer. Two-dimensional (2D) grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the lamellar ordering of the polymer donor was enhanced in the blend film prepared with an asymmetric NFA, whereas the aggregation of a symmetric NFA in the blend films did not increase the lamellar ordering of the polymer donor. Consequently, we achieved an R value of 0.31 A/W and D* value of 2.0 × 10¹³ Jones with a full width at half-maximum value of 230 nm at -2 V and fast response time of 27 μs without any external bias in the asymmetric NFA-based OPDs. The enhancement in the lamellar ordering and miscibility of the blended films are crucial toward increasing the static and dynamic properties of OPDs.

Environmentally Friendly Cross-Linked Antifouling Coatings Based on Dual Antimicrobial Action

The synthesis of environmentally friendly antimicrobial polymeric coatings, especially in the case of aquaculture, that inhibit the growth of bio-deposits is a very important issue that will contribute to the cost reduction of nets’ cleaning process as well as the protection of the submarine wealth from the biostatic substances used so far. In the present work, the antimicrobial polymers P(SSAmC₁₆-co-VBCHAMx) and the terpolymer P(SSAmC₁₆w-co-VBCHAMx-co-GMAy) were synthesized, bearing quaternary ammonium compounds, electrostatically bound and covalently attached at the same polymer chain. The combination of the two types is of particular importance, as it can provide effective antimicrobial polymeric materials with self-polishing capabilities as a result of the released nature of the antimicrobial, in combination with the permanent local action of the immobilized species. The cross-linking reaction of the terpolymer P(SSAmC₁₆w-co-VBCHAMx-co-GMAy) with the homopolymer polyacrylic acid (PAA) was tested at 120 °C in terms of the equivalent ratio between epoxy and carboxyl groups. The synthesized polymers were further used for the coating of aquaculture nets and tested in terms of antifouling efficiency in lab and scale-up conditions. Uncoated nets were also used in all applications for comparison reasons. The coated nets performed efficiently for 35 days in lab-scale and 66 days in scale-up conditions, showing a high antifouling activity in both fields compared to the uncoated nets.

Ligand assisted growth of perovskite single crystals with low defect density

A low defect density in metal halide perovskite single crystals is critical to achieve high performance optoelectronic devices. Here we show the reduction of defect density in perovskite single crystals grown by a ligand-assisted solution process with 3‐(decyldimethylammonio)‐propane‐sulfonate inner salt (DPSI) as an additive. DPSI ligands anchoring with lead ions on perovskite crystal surfaces not only suppress nucleation in solution, but also regulate the addition of proper ions to the growing surface, which greatly enhances the crystal quality. The grown CH₃NH₃PbI₃ crystals show better crystallinity and a 23-fold smaller trap density of 7 × 10¹⁰ cm⁻³ than the optimized control crystals. The enhanced material properties result in significantly suppressed ion migration and superior X-ray detection sensitivity of CH₃NH₃PbI₃ detectors of (2.6 ± 0.4) × 10⁶ µC Gy⁻¹air cm⁻² for 60 kVp X-ray and the lowest detectable dose rate reaches (5.0 ± 0.7) nGy s⁻¹, which enables reduced radiation dose to patients in medical X-ray diagnostics.

The performance of a metal halide perovskite single crystal is governed by the defect density. Here, the authors report a high quality single crystal perovskite grown by a ligand-assisted solution process with DPSI achieving 23-fold smaller trap density than that without DPSI.

Fabricating Antibacterial and Antioxidant Electrospun Hydrophilic Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibers Loaded with AgNPs by Lignin-Induced In-Situ Method

Concerning the environmental hazards owing to the chemical-based synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this study aimed to investigate the possibility of synthesizing AgNPs on the surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers utilizing biomacromolecule lignin. SEM observations revealed that the average diameters of the produced nanofibers were slightly increased from ~512 nm to ~673 nm due to several factors like-swellings that happened during the salt treatment process, surface-bound lignin, and the presence of AgNPs. The presence of AgNPs was validated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The amount of synthesized AgNPs on PAN nanofibers was found to be dependent on both precursor silver salt and reductant lignin concentration. Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectra confirm the presence of lignin on PAN nanofibers. Although the X-ray diffraction pattern did not show any AgNPs band, the reduced intensity of the stabilized PAN characteristics bands at 2θ = 17.28° and 29.38° demonstrated some misalignment of PAN polymeric chains. The water contact angle (WCA) of hydrophobic PAN nanofibers was reduced from 112.6 ± 4.16° to 21.4 ± 5.03° for the maximum AgNPs coated specimen. The prepared membranes exhibited low thermal stability and good swelling capacity up to 20.1 ± 0.92 g/g and 18.05 ± 0.68 g/g in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. Coated lignin imparts antioxidant activity up to 78.37 ± 0.12% at 12 h of incubation. The resultant nanofibrous membranes showed a proportional increase in antibacterial efficacy with the rise in AgNPs loading against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli bacterial strains by disc diffusion test (AATCC 147-1998). Halos for maximum AgNPs loading was calculated to 18.89 ± 0.15 mm for S. aureus and 21.38 ± 0.17 mm for E. coli. An initial burst release of silver elements within 24 h was observed in the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) test, and the release amounts were proportionally expansive with the increase in Ag contents. Our results demonstrated that such types of composite nanofibers have a strong potential to be used in biomedicine.

Magnetophoresis of Magnetic Pickering Emulsions Under Low Field Gradient: Macroscopic and Microscopic Motion

Monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) coated with polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) and cetrimonium bromide (CTAB) have been used to stabilize magnetic Pickering emulsions (MPEs). Magnetophoresis of MPEs under the influence of a low gradient magnetic field (∇B < 100 T/m) was investigated at the macroscopic and microscopic scale. At the macroscopic scale, for the case of pH 7, the MPE achieved a magnetophoretic velocity of 70.9 μm/s under the influence of ∇B at 93.8 T/m. The magnetic separation efficiency of the MPE at 90% was achieved within 30 min for pH 3, 7, and 10. At pH 10, the colloidal stability of the MPE was the lowest compared to that for pH 3 and 7. Thus, MPE at pH 10 required the shortest time for achieving the highest separation efficiency, as the MPE experienced cooperative magnetophoresis at alkaline pH. The creaming rate of the MPE at all conditions was still lower compared to magnetophoresis and was negligible in influencing its separation kinetics profiles. At the microscopic scale, the migration pathways of the MPEs (with diameters between 2.5 and 7.5 μm) undergoing magnetophoresis at ∇B ∼ 13.0 T/m were recorded by an optical microscope. From these experiments, and taking into consideration the MPE size distribution from the dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement, we determined the averaged microscopic magnetophoretic velocity to be 7.8 ± 5.5 μm/s. By making noncooperative magnetophoresis assumptions (with negligible interactions between the MPEs along their migration pathways), the calculated velocity of individual MPEs was 9.8 μm/s. Such a value was within the percentage error of the experimental result of 7.8 ± 5.5 μm/s. This finding allows for an easy and quick estimation of the magnetophoretic velocity of MPEs at the microscale by using macroscopic separation kinetics data.
