Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) is a notable microvascular complication of DM, affecting 16%-66% globally. DPN often leads to proprioceptive deficits in the lower limbs (LL), leading to impaired functional performance. However, evidence supporting proprioceptive rehabilitation programs (PRP) for DPN remains scarce. AIMS This pilot study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel 12-week PRP on LL static and dynamic proprioception and shed light on the potential benefits of PRP for DPN population. METHODS Randomized Controlled Trail was conducted among 30 DPN patients (age 53.25±7.72 years, BMI 24.01±1.41 and DM duration 9.48±6.45 years), randomly allocated to intervention (n = 15) or control (n = 15) groups. The intervention group received PRP 3 times/week for 12 weeks. The control group received no exercise. Both groups received regular diabetic care. Static and dynamic proprioception of both LL were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Position-reposition test was used to assess ankle joint position sense by obtaining difference between target and reproduced angles. Error in detecting knee angle and speed were obtained by performing Lower Limb Matching and Sense of Movement tests respectively to assess dynamic proprioception. RESULTS Two-way ANOVA and paired comparisons revealed, no significant improvement in proprioceptive deficits at 6 weeks (p>0.05), but significant improvement was achieved at 12-weeks (p<0.05) in the intervention group. Mean errors in Pposition re-position(R:p<0.001, L;p<0.001) and Lower limb matching (R:p<0.001, L;p<0.001) tests reduced by 5° and 10° respectively, indicating a70% improvement in the intervention group. Error of detecting speed reduced only on right side by 0.041ms-1 accounting for a 42% improvement. No improvements were observed in the control group. CONCLUSIONS Novel 12-week PRP may yield a significant reduction in LL proprioceptive deficits among DPN patients. Future RCTs with larger samples should compare the effectiveness of this PRP compared with conventional rehabilitation programs.

Abstract
It is generally accepted that local muscular fatigue can negatively affect position sense. Interestingly, it has been proposed that in women, position sense and neuromuscular coordination may be affected by fluctuations of estrogen and progesterone levels. The aim of this study was to examine the possible effect of localized muscle fatigue on knee joint position sense at two phases of the menses: follicular and luteal. Twenty physically active females aged 19-30 years, with normal menses, volunteered for this study. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to evaluate proprioception and perform the fatigue protocol of the knee extensors and flexors. Knee proprioception at rest and after fatigue at three knee target angles (30°, 45°, 60°) was measured. A three-way ANOVA analysis with repeated measures was performed. The results showed that the main effect of fatigue was significant, but no main effect of the menstrual cycle phase was found. Additionally, a main effect was found for the target angle (more flexed target knee joint angles were associated with larger angular error deviations). In conclusion, localized muscle fatigue can significantly reduce the accuracy of active knee joint repositioning in both the luteal and the follicular menstrual phases in young, physically active healthy women.

Abstract
Impaired balance is a significant risk factor for falls among older adults. The precise impact of lower-extremity muscles, including the proportion of muscle strength, on the performance of single-leg standing balance tests in older individuals is very interesting. The aim of this study is to examine the correlation between the knee extensor (KE), ankle plantar flexor (AP) muscle strength, and performance in single-leg standing balance tests in older females. Additionally, it aims to evaluate the combined proportion of KE and AP muscle strength in maintaining balance during single-leg standing. A total of 90 older females (mean age 67.83 ± 8.00 years) were recruited. All participants underwent maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) testing of the KE and AP muscles, as well as single-leg standing balance tests with eyes open (SSEO) and eyes closed (SSEC). To examine the influence of KE and AP muscle strength on balance performance, multiple regression analysis was conducted. Low correlations were found between SSEO and MVIC of KE and AP muscles, but moderate correlations were found with percentage of MVIC to body weight ratio (%MVIC/BW). The best model for SSEO included 0.99 times of the %MVIC/BW of AP and 0.66 times that of KE muscles as independent predictor variables (r = 0.682). In conclusion, AP muscle strength was found to have a greater impact on single-leg standing balance compared with KE muscle strength.

Abstract
Purpose We compared two different strategies providing professional coaching to administer an exercise program for women with postmenopausal osteoporosis (POP): individual training (IT) at home with trainer's supervision provided by telephone contacts at regular time-intervals or group training (GT) with trainer's live supervision. Our working hypothesis was that IT is a valid alternative to GT when GT is not feasible. Patients and Methods This was a single-blind, randomized study. We recruited 52 women with POP, without significant comorbidity, and no participation in any structured exercise program within the previous 6 months. They were assigned randomly to IT or GT groups (n = 26 each). Distribution of age (IT: 68±4, GT: 67±8 years) and body mass index (IT: 23.0±2.5, GT: 21.4±5.1) was similar between groups. Each group performed the exercise program in two 1-hour sessions per week for 18 months. Primary outcome measure was Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), as measured by the Short Osteoporosis Quality of Life Questionnaire. Secondary outcome measures focused on domains acknowledged to influence HRQoL (disability, fear of falling, weekly physical activity, physical function) or the effectiveness of the exercise program (retention, adherence, and safety). Significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results No significant differences were observed between IT and GT groups for any domain. Retention, adherence, and safety were also similar. HRQoL, disability and fear of falling did not change between baseline and follow-up for either group. However, for both groups, physical function (knee flexion, shoulder mobility) and functional capacity (6-minute walking test) improved. Weekly physical activity levels increased from moderate range at baseline to intense at final assessment for both groups. Conclusion IT and GT supervised exercise programs for women with POP provide similar effectiveness, participation and safety. Hence, both modalities should be considered for future translation in clinical practice of exercise recommendations for POP.

Abstract
Falls represent an important adverse effect associated with knee osteoarthritis and result in a significant financial burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, identification of fall predictors is essential to minimize fall incidence. However, few studies have investigated falls and fall predictors, particularly focused on the fear of falls and proprioception. In this study, we investigated significant fall predictors in patients with knee osteoarthritis in Malang, Indonesia. Our findings may serve as useful guidelines to develop geriatric fall prevention programs. This cross-sectional survey using purposive sampling was performed between April and July 2021 and included 372 participants. We recorded the following data: sociodemographic and medical history questionnaire responses, visual analog scale scores, Hopkins falls grading scale scores, Fall Efficacy Scale-International scores, proprioception test findings, knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS), range of motion (ROM), chair stand test and the timed up and go test performance. Data were analyzed using the chi-square and t tests, and multivariate logistic regression to determine significant fall predictors. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a lower risk of falls in patients with better proprioception and ROM than in the other groups (odds ratio 0.55 vs 0.96). The risk of falls was higher in patients with higher KOOS symptoms, fear of falls, diagnosis of low back pain and diabetes mellitus, and increased body mass index than in the other groups (odds ratio 1.41, 2.65, 1.27, 3.45, and 1.10, respectively. Our study shows that knee proprioception and ROM serve as protective factors against falls, whereas KOOS symptoms, fear of falls, low back pain, diabetes mellitus, and body mass index were associated with a high risk of falls, with diabetes mellitus and fear of falls being the most significant risk factors. These findings may be useful to policy makers to develop a fall prevention program that can be implemented in community health care centers across Indonesia to deliver individualized, person-centered care and improve fall prevention strategies through a systematic process comprising evaluation, intervention, and monitoring to minimize fall risk.

Abstract
Screening tests for body posture defects and abnormalities conducted over the past several decades have revealed a significant and constantly increasing problem of health risks in children. A sedentary lifestyle, which is considered to be the primary cause, can result in proprioceptive disorders leading to postural instability. The aim of the study was to find the correlation between the level of proprioceptive control and the number of postural disorders. The study involved a representative group of 1090 children aged 8-10 years, from randomly selected primary schools. Subjects who scored from 1 to 5 points in a prior postural screening test were qualified for the examination of the postural control system. The examination of the postural control system was carried out using an electronic station enabling assessment of postural stability and proprioception. A single leg stance test showed that the number of postural disorders does not significantly impact proprioceptive control. Proprioceptive control was found to significantly increase with the age of the children, and girls presented significantly better proprioceptive control in relation to the boys in each age group.

Abstract
Total ankle prosthesis as a surgical solution in the case of end-stage osteoarthritis has seen a considerable increase in the last two decades. This study protocol arises from the need to understand the in vivo kinematics of mobile-bearing, flat tibial component total ankle replacement, evaluating the real range of motion and the reciprocal relationships between the components during normal motor tasks through the use of model-based radio-stereometric analysis (MB-RSA). In addition, pre- and post-operative evaluation of walking kinematics with inertial motion sensors, proprioception through a dedicated workstation, and clinical outcomes are discussed. We expect that based on our study protocol researchers will be able to improve future prosthetic designs and validate the setup of MB-RSA, as well as to understand "how an ankle prosthesis moves" once implanted in the patient.

Abstract
Background Balance impairment is a common problem in all age groups. There are several tools to assess balance. Functional reach test (FRT), single-leg stance (SLS) test, timed up and go (TUG) test, and TUG with the cognitive dual-task (TUGcog) are commonly employed balance tests. The current study aimed to determine the normative values of FRT, SLST, TUG, and TUGcog across age groups and genders in healthy Iranian adults. Methods We designed a cross-sectional study, and 240 healthy adults (120 males and 120 females) in six age groups (18–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60–69, ≥70 years) completed FRT, SLST, TUG, and TUGcog based on the Persian version of BESTest instructions. Results There were significant age-specific declines in balance performances. Gender had effects on 18–29 years and older adults (≥60 years), and males performed better than females. Male and females had similar performance on the TUG and TUGcog tests in 60–69 years (p > 0.05). Conclusions The normative values of FRT, SLS, TUG, and TUGcog provided for healthy Iranian adults increase the clinical utility of tests, and serve as a reference to estimating the individuals’ balance performance across age and gender groups. This study provided reference values of four balance tests for Iranian adults. Performance in balance tests declines with age among Iranian adults. In most age groups, there is no significant difference between males and females regarding their balance.

Abstract
No previous research has examined age and sex differences in balance outcomes in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at risk of falls. A secondary analysis of baseline data from an ongoing trial of fall prevention in COPD was conducted. Age and sex differences were analyzed for the Berg Balance scale (BBS), Balance Evaluation System Test (BEST test) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC). Overall, 223 individuals with COPD were included. Females had higher balance impairments than males [BBS: mean (SD) = 47 (8) vs. 49 (6) points; BEST test: 73 (16) vs. 80 (16) points], and a lower confidence to perform functional activities [ABC = 66 (21) vs. 77 (19)]. Compared to a younger age (50-65 years) group, age >65 years was moderately associated with poor balance control [BBS (r = - 0.37), BEST test (r = - 0.33)] and weakly with the ABC scale (r = - 0.13). After controlling for the effect of balance risk factors, age, baseline dyspnea index (BDI), and the 6-min walk test (6-MWT) explained 38% of the variability in the BBS; age, sex, BDI, and 6-MWT explained 40% of the variability in the BEST test; And BDI and the 6-MWT explained 44% of the variability in the ABC scale. This study highlights age and sex differences in balance outcomes among individuals with COPD at risk of falls. Recognition of these differences has implications for pulmonary rehabilitation and fall prevention in COPD, particularly among females and older adults.

Abstract
Postural balance and gait are important factors in the functional status of older people; however, few studies have addressed differences by sex. The objective of this study was to analyze the postural balance and temporal−spatial parameters of gait in independent older adults by sex. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Thirty-eight independent older women (69 ± 5 years), and 33 men (71 ± 5 years) were evaluated. The postural balance test with open and closed eyes was performed on two surfaces (hard/soft) on a force platform. Gait was recorded with cameras to analyze cycle duration and speed, step length, stride length, and foot clearance. The area of postural balance was greater in men in all tests (p < 0.001). Foot clearance height and cycle duration were lower in women (p < 0.05). Men showed a negative correlation between the area of balance and gait parameters. In women, a positive correlation was observed between foot clearance and balance with eyes closed. The postural balance and gait suggest discrepancies by sex, showing that older men behave differently according to the requirement of the motor task compared to women. These findings suggest being corroborated in more complex studies in the future.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine if there is a difference in postural stability in highly trained adolescents and young adult athletes regarding sex and sport. The participants were young athletes (n = 464) from seven different sports. We considered the center of pressure (CoP) velocity (total, anterior–posterior (AP) and medial–lateral (ML)), CoP amplitude (AP and ML), and CoP frequency (AP and ML), as assessed by single-leg quiet stance test. Significant interactions were found between sex and sport for all CoP variables (p < 0.02). Additionally, a significant main effect of sport was also found in all CoP variables (p = 0.01). Regarding sex, significant effects were found for all CoP amplitude variables (p = 0.01), as well as for CoP velocity variables, except for CoP ML (p = 0.06). Moreover, there was no sex effect for CoP frequency AP (p = 0.18). The results of the current study confirm the claim that the criteria for optimal postural strategies for elite athletes likely depend on a given sport.

Abstract
Maintaining body balance is a complex function based on the information deriving from the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems. The aim of the study was to evaluate quiet single stance stability in young adults with lumbar derangement syndrome (LDS) and in the control group of the healthy subjects. The second aim of this study was to determine whether pain intensity, degree of disability, and the level of physical activity can influence postural control in patients with LDS. It is important to underline that selecting a homogeneous group of LBP patients using, for example, mechanical diagnosis and therapy method and Quebec Task Force Classification, can result in an increased sensitivity of the study. The study included 126 subjects: 70 patients with LDS (37 women, 33 men) and the control group 56 healthy volunteers (36 women, 20 men). In case of multiple group comparisons for variables with normal distribution, ANOVA post hoc test was used or, as the nonparametric equivalent, Kruskal-Wallis test. In all these calculations, the statistical significance level was set to p < 0.05. The stability index eyes open for the study group was 88.34 and for the control group 89.86. There was no significant difference in the level of postural control between the study and control groups (p > 0.05). The level of stability index eyes closed (SI EC) for the study group was 71.44 and for the control group 77.1. SI EC results showed significant differences in proprioceptive control during single leg stance between the study and control groups (p < 0.05). The level of pain intensity, the degree of disability, and physical activity level did not influence postural control in the study group with LDS. In summary, patients with LDS showed significantly worse proprioceptive control.

Abstract
Dance has been suggested to be an advantageous exercise modality for improving postural balance performance and reducing the risk of falls in the older population. The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether visual restriction impacts older dancers and non-dancers differently during a quiet stance balance performance test. We hypothesized higher balance performance and greater balance deterioration due to visual restriction in dancers compared with non-dancers, indicating the superior contribution of the visual channel in the expected higher balance performances of dancers. Sixty-nine (38 men, 31 women, 74 ± 6 years) healthy older adults participated and were grouped into a Greek traditional dance group (n = 31, two to three times/week for 1.5 h/session, minimum of 3 years) and a non-dancer control group (n = 38, no systematic exercise history). The participants completed an assessment of one-legged quiet stance trials using both left and right legs and with eyes open while standing barefoot on a force plate (Wii, A/D converter, 1,000 Hz; Biovision) and two-legged trials with both eyes open and closed. The possible differences in the anthropometric and one-legged balance parameters were examined by a univariate ANOVA with group and sex as fixed factors. This ANOVA was performed using the same fixed factors and vision as the repeated measures factor for the two-legged balance parameters. In the one-legged task, the dance group showed significantly lower values in anteroposterior and mediolateral sway amplitudes (p = 0.001 and p = 0.035) and path length measured in both directions (p = 0.001) compared with the non-dancers. In the two-legged stance, we found a significant vision effect on path length (p < 0.001) and anteroposterior amplitude (p < 0.001), whereas mediolateral amplitude did not differ significantly (p = 0.439) between closed and open eyes. The dance group had a significantly lower CoP path length (p = 0.006) and anteroposterior (p = 0.001) and mediolateral sway amplitudes (p = 0.003) both in the eyes-open and eyes-closed trials compared with the control group. The superior balance performance in the two postural tasks found in the dancers is possibly the result of the coordinated, aesthetically oriented intersegmental movements, including alternations between one- and two-legged stance phases, that comes with dance. Visual restriction resulted in a similar deterioration of balance performance in both groups, thus suggesting that the contribution of the visual channel alone cannot explain the superior balance performance of dancers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Low back pain (LBP) is widely prevalent in healthcare workers. It is associated with impaired postural and core stability. So far, centre of pressure (CoP) measures have been commonly recorded through the use of a force plate in order to assess postural stability. However, this approach provides limited information about the centre of mass (CoM) movement in the lumbar region in individuals with LBP. Recent developments in sensor technology enable measurement of the trunk motion which could provide additional information on postural sway. However, the question remains as to whether CoM measures would be more sensitive in discriminating individuals with mild and moderate back pain than traditional CoP analyses. This study aims to investigate the sensitivity of CoP and CoM measures under varied stable, metastable and unstable testing conditions in healthcare workers, and their relationship with the level of subjective reported back pain. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This is a cross-sectional controlled laboratory study. A group of 90 healthcare professionals will be recruited from rehabilitation centres within local areas. Participants will complete the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire. The primary outcome will be the rate of their back pain on the 0-10 Low Back Pain Scale (1-3 mild pain and 4-6 moderate pain). Secondary outcomes will include variables of postural and core stability testing during bipedal and one-legged stance on a force plate, a foam mat placed on the force plate, and a spring-supported platform with either eyes open or eyes closed. Both CoP using the posturography system based on a force plate and CoM using the inertial sensor system placed on the trunk will be simultaneously measured. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Projects were approved by the ethics committee of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, Comenius University in Bratislava (Nos. 4/2017, 1/2020). Findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences.

Abstract
Objective: Sleepiness caused by sleep deprivation may increase the risk of injuries and damages during physical activity. Individual data so far indicate a generally better static postural stability of women regardless of sleeping conditions. The main aim of this study was to assess the impact of sleep deprivation on postural stability according to gender after 24 h of sleep deprivation. Methods: Participants included 83 students (36 men and 47 women). Postural stability was measured with eyes open and closed eyes before and after sleep deprivation. Data from posturographic platform were used to assess postural stability objectively. Results: The type of test determined the size of observed changes in postural stability. The data suggest that women are better able to cope with the effects of sleep deprivation than men. Conclusion: Postural control system is very important in sport and in physically active people. The results show that men are more sensitive to sleep deprivation than women because they had higher COP (center of pressure) values in tests. Abstract
Proper posture provides the best balance and body stability at minimal muscular effort. It is constantly controlled by the central nervous system, which integrates the stimuli from the proprioceptors (deep feeling sensors), vision receptors, and balance receptors through the subcortical structures. The main purpose of the study was to describe single stance stability and its correlation with the degree of scoliosis and trunk rotation among patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis and in the control group without scoliosis. The study included 80 patients (69 girls and 11 boys) and 40 healthy children without scoliosis (21 girls and 19 boys). The Cobb angle technique was used to determine the magnitude of the deformity. All subjects were divided into three subgroups according to Bogdanov's classification. Single stance stability with eyes open and eyes closed was assessed with an electronic postural station-Delos Postural Proprioceptive System (DPPS). In case of multiple group comparisons for variables with normal distribution ANOVA with Scheffe, post hoc test was used or Kruskal-Wallis test was used as the nonparametric equivalent. The relationship between the two continuous variables was investigated using either Pearson product-moment correlation or Spearman's rank correlation. In all these calculations, the statistical significance level was set to p < 0.05. The single stance test showed a significant difference between the stability index with eyes open and stability index with eyes closed in study and control groups. The character of these alterations is influenced by the degree of trunk rotation. The degree of scoliosis according to Bogdanov classification does not determine the decrease in stability indexes. In summary, significantly lower values of the stability index during one-leg standing with eyes closed indicated balance impairment, which is mainly connected with inadequate functioning of the proprioceptive system.

Abstract
Recovery of postural control and proprioception in patients affected by chronic ankle instability (CAI) and operated on capsulo-ligaments reconstructive surgery lacks of objective assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term post-surgical postural and proprioceptive control through the DPPS device in a cohort of patients operated on ligaments reconstruction through the modified Brostrom procedure at a minimum follow up of 12 months.Eleven patients with post-traumatic lateral CAI, operated of external capsulo-ligamentous complex repair according to Brostrom technique at a minimum follow-up of 1 year were enrolled. Physical examination and American Orthopaedics Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score. Proprioceptive and postural stability was assessed by DPPS - Delos Postural Proprioceptive System, linked to a computer with a specific software and including a flat table, an electronic unstable proprioceptive board, a Delos Vertical Controller, a monitor and a horizontal bar fitted with an infra-red sensor for hand support.Patients were 5 males and 6 females, mean age of 38.4 ± 12 years. Mean BMI of the patients was 26.8 ± 4.4. Mean follow up was 13.4 ± 2.1. The mean value of (AOFAS) clinical score was 90.3/100. Mean Static Stability Index (SSI) with open eyes was 87.7% (±7.6) in the operated leg and 90.4% (±6.1) in the contra-lateral. SSI with closed eyes was 64.5% (±11.2) in the operated leg and 61.6% (±16.8) in the contra-lateral. Mean Dynamic Stability Index (DSI) without restrictions was 56.2% (±14.6) in the operated leg and 56.8% (±10.6) in the contra-lateral. DSI with restricted upper limbs, had a mean value of 56.3% (±11.4) in the operated leg and 58.1% (±11.9) in the contra-lateral.Re-tensioning capsular-ligamentous surgery of the external compartment for CAI allow to recovery proprioceptive and postural control on the operated side, comparable with data from the contralateral limb and from the healthy population of the same age and sex.

Abstract
Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic disease of the skeleton characterized by increased risk of fracture. There is a general consensus on the efficacy of physical activity in the prevention of bone loss, falls and fractures, but there is no agreement on the best setting to exercise. The aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of a 12-months exercise protocol for women with post-menopausal OP when administered as individual home training (IHT) versus gym group training (GGT). The study is a randomized trial with two parallel groups. Sedentary patients with primary post-menopausal osteoporosis are recruited at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli of Bologna. In the first group, the 12-month ACTLIFE program is performed as IHT, while in the second as GGT. The program is aimed at improving joint mobility, muscle force, balance, motor coordination and endurance. The study is single blinded. Patients are assessed at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. The primary outcome is the modification of quality of life measured with the Short Osteoporosis Quality of Life Questionnaire (ECOS-16). The findings of this study will highlight advantages and disadvantages of exercising in the two different settings and provide evidence on how to increase physical activity in osteoporotic women.

Abstract
Single-limb stance instability is a major risk factor for falls in older adults. Thus, improvement of stance stability could play an important role in fall prevention. This study aimed to determine whether high-frequency proprioceptive training (HPT) could significantly improve single stance stability (SSS) in older adults, by increasing proprioceptive control and optimizing the contribution of vision. Sixty-one subjects (30 men, 31 women) aged 65-85 years were investigated. The subjects were randomly assigned to three intervention groups, i.e., HPT, treadmill, and no intervention, stratifying by gender and proprioceptive control at baseline. Stability tests and HPT, consisting of 12 sessions (6 weeks), were performed with computerized postural stations. Pre-post analysis showed that HPT significantly improved SSS by increasing proprioceptive control (p<0.001) and postural control (p<0.01). The treadmill and no intervention groups did not show any significant change. The results showed that different levels of proprioceptive control may activate, inhibit, or minimize the stabilizing intervention of vision. Given that HPT significantly reduced ankle sprains and low back pain in professional athletes (previous study), we discuss the hypothesis that the risk of falls in older adults and the risk of recurrent injuries in athletes would have a common origin: lack of proprioceptive control consequent to reduced interaction with uneven ground. The findings suggest that HPT may be a powerful activator of refined proprioceptive control, which allows increased SSS, safer interaction with the ground, and mitigation of other risk factors.

Abstract
Many diseases and conditions decrease the ability to control balance. In clinical settings, there is therefore a major interest in the assessment of postural control. Trunk accelerometry is an easy, low-cost method used for balance testing and constitutes an alternative method to the posturography using force platforms. The objective was to assess the responsiveness of accelerometry in a battery of 12 quiet standing tasks. We evaluated the balance of 100 healthy adults with an accelerometer fixed onto the sternum. We used the average amplitude of acceleration as an indirect measure of postural sways. The tasks of increased difficulty were realized with or without vision. The battery of tasks was repeated four times on two different days to assess reliability. We analyzed the extent to which the task difficulty and the absence of vision affected the trunk sway. The influence of individual characteristics (age, height, mass, sex, and physical activity level) was also assessed. The reliability analysis revealed that four repetitions of the battery of tasks are needed to reach a high accuracy level (mean ICC = 0.85). The results showed that task difficulty had a very large effect on trunk sways and that the removal of vision further increased sways. Concerning the effects of individual characteristics, we observed that women tended to oscillate more than men did in tasks of low difficulty. Age and physical activity level also had significant effects, whereas height and mass did not. In conclusion, age, sex, and physical fitness are confounders that should be considered when assessing patients’ balance. A battery of simple postural tasks measured by upper-trunk accelerometry can be a useful method for simple balance evaluation in clinical settings.

Abstract
Knee A1 rotationplasty is a particular type of limb salvage surgery alternative to hip disarticulation and high transfemoral amputation for skeletally immature children with bone cancers in the distal femur. Notwithstanding optimal functional outcomes, long-term survivor patients often report frequent falls, and a sense of instability during gait, particularly on uneven terrain. This study aimed to assess the postural control, the proprioception, and the risk of fall in these patients, which have not been explored before. Eighteen long-term survivor patients participated in the study. The mean follow-up from surgery was 23 years, mean age 32 years. Patients were assessed using a specific instrumental device (Delos Postural Proprioceptive System) both for the static double-stance and the single-stance test in the open eyes and closed eyes conditions. The double-stance test showed postural instability values within the normal range for healthy individuals, whereas in the single-stance test stability index, when assessed in the average of both lower limbs, values were lower than the literature findings for older individuals. However, when separating the operated from the nonoperated limb performance, standing on the operated limb was very unstable, with a low stability index and a low degree of autonomy, indicating a certain risk of falling, whereas standing on the nonoperated limb had a performance close to normal or even superior. In conclusion, knee rotationplasty patients had very good postural control when standing on both limbs, whereas single stance on the operated limb was compromised, with particular involvement of the proprioceptive component. This may determine a higher risk of falling than their normal-age counterparts and rehabilitation intervention for prevention is indicated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The link between postural control and cognition is under-studied, especially in healthy older adults. In the present study, we examined the link between postural control and posture-unrelated attention control. STUDY DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES Healthy individuals (n = 112) - men aged 77.2 ± 5.5, and two groups of women, aged 78.6 ± 3.5 and 68.9 ± 3.7 - participated in this cross-sectional study. Postural control was assessed by static balance (SB) posturography in eight standing positions, and by two measures of dynamic balance (DB): the Timed Up-and-Go (TUG) test, and the Functional Reach Test (FRT). Attention control (inhibition) was assessed by the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) measuring Go/NoGo tasks with and without visual and audio distractors. RESULTS Men tended to perform better on DB and women on SB. In the men, significant correlations were observed between Go/NoGo tasks and DB (r range: 0.373 to 0.653 for TUG, and -0.342 to -0.530 for FRT). In the younger women, Go/NoGo tasks were correlated with SB (r range: 0.323 to 0.572), and no correlations were observed in the older women. Go/NoGo tasks without distractions followed by tasks with audio distractors explained postural control measures. CONCLUSIONS Posture-unrelated attention inhibition was associated with SB in the women and with DB in the men. Tasks with no distractions explained the variability in postural control in both genders. It is recommended to examine the effect of balance exercises on postural control and posture-unrelated attention control in both genders, and the contribution of the relationship between postural control and posture-unrelated attention control to falls in old age.

Abstract
Gait and balance disorders are among the main predisposing factors of falls in elderly. Clinical scales are widely employed to assess the risk of falling, but they require trained personnel. We investigate the use of objective measures obtained from a wearable accelerometer to evaluate the fall risk, determined by the Tinetti clinical scale. Seventy-nine patients and eleven volunteers were enrolled in two rehabilitation centers and underwent a full Tinetti test, while wearing a triaxial accelerometer at the chest. Tinetti scores were assessed by expert physicians and those subjects with a score ≤18 were considered at high risk. First, we analyzed 21 accelerometer features by means of statistical tests and correlation analysis. Second, one regression and one classification problem were designed and solved using a linear model (LM) and an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the Tinetti outcome. Pearson's correlation between the Tinetti score and a subset of 9 features (mainly related with standing and walking) was 0.71. The misclassification error of high risk patient was 0.21 and 0.11, for LM and ANN, respectively. The work might foster the development of a new generation of applications meant to monitor the time evolution of the fall risk using low cost devices at home.

Abstract
Introduction Precision of movements responsible for maintaining balance deteriorates with age due to natural involutionary processes, thus prompting a research question whether the values of gender-related stability indicators might differ significantly among the study subjects over 60 years of age. Methods The study group comprised 136 seniors (89 women, 47 men; aged 60–90 years). The CQ-Stab 2P 2-platform posturograph was used as the main research device, whereas the Mann–Whitney U-test was used to evaluate the gender-related differences in the average level of variables. Results In the open-eye test, significant gender-related differences were observed with regard to the statokinesiogram’s path length in the mediolateral (ML) direction in the subjects aged 60–69 years (p=0.004), mean frequency of center of pressure (COP) displacement and number of COP displacements in the ML direction in the subjects aged 70–79 years (p=0.028, p=0.019), and mean COP displacement in the anteroposterior (AP) direction in the subjects aged 80–90 years (p=0.026). When the subjects were deprived of visual control, gender-related differences were observed with regard to the mean frequency of COP displacement, number of COP displacements in the ML direction in the subjects aged 60–69 years (p=0.045, p=0.049), and the statokinesiogram’s path length in the AP direction in the subjects aged 70–79 years (p=0.015). In the oldest age group, the differences were noted in the statokinesiogram’s path length in the AP direction (p=0.001), a sway area delimited by the COP point (p=0.003), range of AP stability (p<0.001), and range of ML stability (p=0.048). Conclusion Gender-related differences affecting postural stability were found in the elderly. Men were characterized by a lower level of postural stability when compared with women. This highlights the need to have the gender-related differences taken into account, when developing various preventive and therapeutic programs specifically aimed at compensating certain involution-dependent deficits.

Abstract
This review examines the effect of a dual task on the gait parameters of older adults with a mean gait speed of 1.0 m/s or greater, and the effect of type and complexity of task. A systematic review of Web of Science, PubMed, SCOPUS, Embase, and PsycINFO was performed in July 2016. Twenty-three studies (28 data sets) were reviewed and pooled for meta-analysis. The effect size on seven gait parameters was measured as the raw mean difference between single- and dual-task performance. Gait speed significantly reduced with the addition of a dual task, with increasing complexity showing greater decrements. Cadence, stride time, and measures of gait variability were all negatively affected under the dual-task condition. In older adults, the addition of a dual task significantly reduces gait speed and cadence, with possible implications for the assessment of older people, as the addition of a dual task may expose deficits not observed under single-task assessment.

Abstract
Multisensory-visual, vestibular and somatosensory information is integrated for appropriate postural control. The primary goal of this study was to assess somatosensory utilization during a functional motor task of unipedal postural control, in normal healthy adults. Assessing individual bias in the utilization of individual sensory contributions during postural control may help customization of rehabilitation protocols. In this study, a test paradigm of unipedal stance control in supine orientation with and without vision was assessed. Postural control in this test paradigm was hypothesized to utilize predominantly contributions of somatosensory information from the feet and ankle joint, with minimal vestibular input. Fourteen healthy subjects "stood" supine on their dominant leg while strapped to a backpack frame that was freely moving on air-bearings, to remove available otolith tilt cues with respect to gravity that influences postural control when standing upright. The backpack was attached through a cable to a pneumatic cylinder that provided a gravity-like load. Subjects performed three trials each with Eyes-open (EO) and Eyes-closed (EC) while loaded with 60% body weight. There was no difference in unipedal stance time (UST) across the two conditions with EC condition challenging the postural control system greater than the EO condition. Stabilogram-diffusion analysis (SDA) indicated that the critical mean square displacement was significantly different between the two conditions. Vestibular cues, both in terms of magnitude and the duration for which relevant information was available for postural control in this test paradigm, were minimized. These results support our hypothesis that maintaining unipedal stance in supine orientation without vision, minimizes vestibular contribution and thus predominantly utilizes somatosensory information for postural control.

Abstract
Although balance and gait deteriorate as a person ages, it is unknown if all balance and gait measures change similarly across the adult age span. We developed the Instrumented Stand and Walk test (ISAW) to provide a quick quantification of key components of balance and walking: postural sway, anticipatory postural adjustments during step initiation, gait, and turning using body-worn, inertial sensors. Our aims were to characterize how different balance and gait measures change with age and to identify key age-related measures of mobility, in a wide age range of healthy, community-dwelling adults. A total of 135 healthy, community-dwelling subjects of age range 21-89years with no history of falls were enrolled. Subjects wore inertial sensors on the wrists, ankles, sternum and lumbar area; 37 reliable and valid measures of postural sway, step initiation, gait and turning were computed. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to examine how the measures changed with age. Several distinct correlation patterns between age and ISAW measures were observed: linear deterioration, deterioration after plateau, and subtle, or no, worsening. Spatial, but not temporal, measures of gait were age-related. The strongest age correlation was found for centroidal frequency of mediolateral postural sway (r=-0.50, p≤0.001). A hierarchical regression model revealed that age was the most important predictor of mediolateral centroidal frequency, with lower sway frequencies associated with older age, independent of gender, weight, and height. Our results showed that balance and gait represent independent control systems for mobility and not all balance and gait measures deteriorate the same way with age. Postural sway during stance was more strongly related to age than any gait, gait initiation or turning measure.

Abstract
Single limb stance instability is a risk factor for lower extremity injuries. Therefore, the development of proprioception may play an important role in injury prevention. This investigation considered a professional basketball team for 6 years, integrating systematic proprioceptive activity in the training routine. The purpose was to assess the effectiveness of proprioceptive training programs based on quantifiable instability, to reduce ankle sprains, knee sprains, and low back pain through developing refined and long-lasting proprioceptive control. Fifty-five subjects were studied. In the first biennium (2004-2006), the preventive program consisted of classic proprioceptive exercises. In the second biennium (2006-2008), the proprioceptive training became quantifiable and interactive by means of electronic proprioceptive stations. In the third biennium (2008-2010), the intensity and the training volume increased while the session duration became shorter. Analysis of variance was used to analyze the differences in proprioceptive control between groups, years, and bienniums. Injury rates and rate ratios of injury during practices and games were estimated. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in the occurrence of ankle sprains by 81% from the first to the third biennium (p < 0.001). Low back pain showed similar results with a reduction of 77.8% (p < 0.005). The reduction in knee sprains was 64.5% (not significant). Comparing the third biennium with the level of all new entry players, proprioceptive control improved significantly by 72.2% (p < 0.001). These findings indicate that improvements in proprioceptive control in single stance may be a key factor for an effective reduction in ankle sprains, knee sprains, and low back pain.

Abstract
Preventing fall-related injuries is becoming a priority as the world population ages. This study's purpose was to examine the effect of aging on vertical postural control in the community-dwelling elderly. Thirty-six elderly individuals and twenty-two healthy young adults were asked to shift their centers of pressure (COPs) as far as possible while standing. The COP position, angle of each lower leg joint, and postural muscle activities were measured using a force plate, three-dimensional motion analyzer, and electromyogram, respectively. The vertical position of the center of mass (COM) was also measured to assess the change in vertical postural control. The backward COP shift in the elderly group was significantly smaller than that in the young group, and both the forward and backward COM shifts were significantly smaller in elders relative to those in youths. The COM position in the elderly group during the backward COP shift was also significantly lower than that in the young group. Knee and ankle joint movements differed between the two groups during the backward COP shift. Factor analysis indicated that dorsal and ventral muscle groups were involved in the COP shift. Specifically, the relationship between the biceps femoris muscle and the voluntary COP shift was reinforced in the elderly group. These findings suggest that the vertical postural strategy changes in the elderly during the backward COP shift.
