Chemical-physical behavior of Hydroxyapatite: A modeling approach

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a ceramic composed of calcium phosphate, frequently employed as a bone substitute material due to its biocompatibility and bioactivity. Over the past century, there has been substantial attention in fields such as orthopedics and plastic surgery. Remarkably, synthetic HAp exhibits properties akin to those found in natural bone and teeth. Computational theoretical chemistry focuses on numerically computing molecular electronic structures and interactions. As chemistry education evolves, it's imperative to acknowledge the increasing significance of computational tools in research. Density Functional Theory (DFT) stands out as the most widely adopted method in contemporary computational chemistry. In this study, we synthesized Hydroxyapatite (HAp) via the double decomposition method using synthetic sources. The synthesized materials underwent thorough characterization, including X-ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy under various conditions. Additionally, we performed quantum mechanical computations on the HAp molecule using density functional theory. Our results were then compared with experimental data. Our experimental findings highlight the successful synthesis of HAp, particularly under specific temperature conditions. Moreover, the quantum chemistry calculations exhibited excellent agreement with the experimental results, especially in terms of spectroscopic characterizations.

Kinetic spectrophotometric assay for the determination of vitamin C in cosmetics following ultrasound-assisted emulsification

In this work, a new analytical approach based on ultrasound-assisted emulsification followed by a photoreaction with methylene blue (MB) and kinetic analysis by UV-vis spectrophotometry has been developed for the determination of L-ascorbic acid (AA) in cosmetic samples. The emulsification of cosmetic samples results in a transparent solution that allows an easy and rapid quantitation by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The emulsified sample is mixed with a MB aqueous solution and this mixture is subjected to irradiation with a tungsten lamp for 5 min (fixed-time kinetic assay). A reduction in the MB absorbance intensity at 664 nm occurs as the concentration of AA increases. The observed change in absorbance intensity was used for calibration and further quantitation using the relationship of absorbance logarithm vs. AA concentration (μg mL^-1). In order to achieve an optimal response, different parameters involved in the reaction between AA and MB were fully investigated. Under optimal conditions, the limits of detection and quantification were 0.04 μg mL^-1 and 0.15 μg mL^-1, respectively. Repeatability and reproducibility, expressed as relative standard deviation, were in the range of 0.4-0.6% and 0.6-1.5%, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was applied to the analysis of 15 cosmetic samples, namely, (i) 12 samples without AA, which were used to carry out recovery studies, obtaining results in the range of 97.5-100.7%; (ii) 3 serum samples containing pure AA among their ingredients, which were used for AA stability studies.

Transition Metal Catalyzed Hiyama Cross-Coupling: Recent Methodology Developments and Synthetic Applications

Hiyama cross-coupling is a versatile reaction in synthetic organic chemistry for the construction of carbon-carbon bonds. It involves the coupling of organosilicons with organic halides using transition metal catalysts in good yields and high enantioselectivities. In recent years, hectic progress has been made by researchers toward the synthesis of diversified natural products and pharmaceutical drugs using the Hiyama coupling reaction. This review emphasizes the recent synthetic developments and applications of Hiyama cross-coupling.

Biopolymer Textile Structure of Chitosan with Polyester

The research deals with functionalization of a standard polyester fabric with biopolymer chitosan, whose premises are multifunctional and favour ecological effects. Due to the incompatibility of synthetic and natural polymers, the chitosan treatment was preceded by alkaline hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide with the addition of cationic and anionic surfactants as promoters. Compatibility of the chitosan with untreated and alkali-hydrolyzed fabrics was performed by analysis of mechanical and physico-chemical properties. The number of characterisation procedures performed required the use of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) to identify homogeneous groups or clusters in which similarities and differences between samples are visible. Almost all applied methods and evaluation parameters have shown that alkaline hydrolysis of polyester fabric has the best potential for functionalization with chitosan. Therefore, the addition of surfactants as promoters during alkaline hydrolysis is not necessary in the pretreatment process phase.

Bifunctional Janus Silica Spheres for Pickering Interfacial Tandem Catalysis

Nature provides much inspiration for the design of multistep conversion processes, with numerous reactions running simultaneously and without interference in cells, for example. A key challenge in mimicking nature's strategies is to compartmentalize incompatible reagents and catalysts, for example, for tandem catalysis. Here, we present a new strategy for antagonistic catalyst compartmentalization. The synthesis of bifunctional Janus catalyst particles carrying acid and base groups on the particle's opposite patches is reported as is their application as acid-base catalysts in oil/water emulsions. The synthesis strategy involved the use of monodisperse, hydrophobic and amine-functionalized silica particles (SiO₂ -NH₂ -OSi(CH₃ )₃ ) to prepare an oil-in-water Pickering emulsion (PE) with molten paraffin wax. After solidification, the exposed patch of the silica particles was selectively etched and refunctionalized with acid groups to yield acid-base Janus particles (Janus A-B). These materials were successfully applied in biphasic Pickering interfacial catalysis for the tandem dehydration-Knoevenagel condensation of fructose to 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural-2-diethylmalonate (5-HMF-DEM) in a water/4-propylguaiacol PE. The results demonstrate the advantage of rapid extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a prominent platform molecule prone to side product formation in acidic media. A simple strategy to tune the acid/base balance using PE with both Janus A-B and monofunctional SiO₂ -NH₂ -OSi(CH₃ )₃ base catalysts proved effective for antagonistic tandem catalysis.

Influence of Hydrotropes on the Solubilities and Diffusivities of Redox-Active Organic Compounds for Aqueous Flow Batteries

In this study, we explored the extent to which hydrotropes can be used to increase the aqueous solubilities of redox-active compounds previously used in flow batteries. We measured how five hydrotropes influenced the solubilities of five redox-active compounds already soluble in aqueous electrolytes (≥0.5 M). The solubilities of the compounds varied as a function of hydrotrope type and concentration, with larger solubility changes observed at higher hydrotrope concentrations. 4-OH-TEMPO underwent the largest solubility increase (1.18 ± 0.04 to 1.99 ± 0.12 M) in 20 weight percent sodium xylene sulfonate. The presence of a hydrotrope in solution decreased the diffusion coefficients of 4-OH-TEMPO and 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonate, which was likely due to the increased solution viscosity as opposed to a specific hydrotrope-solute interaction because the hydrotropes did not alter their molecules' hydraulic radii. The standard rate constants and formal potentials of both 4-OH-TEMPO and 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonate remained largely unchanged in the presence of a hydrotrope. The results suggest that using hydrotropes may be a feasible strategy for increasing the solubilities of redox-active compounds in aqueous flow batteries without substantially altering their electrochemical properties.

Palladium-Catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck and Copper-Free Sonogashira Coupling Reactions in Water Using Thermoresponsive Polymer Micelles

A few kinds of thermoresponsive diblock copolymers have been synthesized and utilized for palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions in water. Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAAm) are employed for thermoresponsive segments and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSSNa) and poly(sodium 2-acrylamido-methylpropanesulfonate) (PAMPSNa) are employed for hydrophilic segments. Palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions are performed in water and the efficiency of the extraction process is studied. More efficient extraction was observed for the PDEAAm copolymers when compared with the PNIPAAm copolymers and conventional surfactants. In the study of the Sonogashira coupling reactions in water, aggregative precipitation of the products was observed. Washing the precipitate with water gave the product with satisfactory purity with a good yield.

Self-Assembled Quaternary Ammonium-Containing Comb-Like Polyelectrolytes for the Hydrolysis of Organophosphorous Esters: Effect of Head Groups and Counter-Ions

The aim of this work was to increase the efficiency of catalytic systems for the hydrolytic cleavage of 4-nitrophenyl esters of phosphonic acids. Quaternary ammonium-containing comb-like polyelectrolytes («polymerized micelles») with ester cleavable fragments and a low aggregation threshold were used as catalysts. The synthesis of poly(11-acryloyloxyundecylammonium) surfactants with different counterions (Br^- , NO₃ ^- , CH₃ C₆ H₄ SO₃ ^- ) and head groups was realized by micellar free-radical polymerization. Molecular weight, critical association concentration, particle sizes and solubilization properties toward Orange OT were determined. Self-assemblies organized by poly(11-acryloyloxyundecyltrimethyl ammonium) bromide successfully catalyze the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl butylchloromethylphosphonate up to two orders of magnitude compared to aqueous alkaline hydrolysis. The development of these catalysts is promising for industrial applications and organophosphorus compound detoxification.

Kinetic study of the metal-dipeptide complex with ninhydrin facilitated by gemini (m-s-m) surfactant micelles

The three Gemini (m-s-m; m (head group) = 16 and s (spacer) = 4, 5, 6) surfactants have been synthesized and their impact on reaction of zinc(II)-glycylleucine complex ([Zn(II)-Gly-Leu]⁺) and ninhydrin were studied at temperature (343 K) and pH (5.0) using spectroscopic method. Influence of several factors, viz., [Zn(II)-Gly-Leu]⁺, [ninhydrin], temperature and pH were also carried out on title reaction in geminis. Rates of reaction are the first-order path in concentration of [Zn(II)-Gly-Leu]⁺ complex and fractional order path in concentration of ninhydrin. The catalysis of gemini 16-s-16 surfactant micelles was investigated below and above their critical micelle concentration (cmc) value and detailed elaboration were provided in the text. In the present case, rate constants, k_ψ, increased on increasing geminis ([gemini] are below their cmc, region I) and stayed nearly constant (region II). The shape of (region I and II) surfactants ([gemini] = 0 to 400 × 10^-5 mol dm^-3) are similar to a cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB (single hydrophilic head group and hydrophobic part). Later, a sharp increment in rate was observed with higher [gemini] (region III, (Fig. 5). The study was catalyzed and accelerated quite enough by geminis (at concentrations below their cmc) compared to aqueous. An appropriate mechanism has been proposed for accounting for the distribution of reactants between aqueous and micellar pseudo phases. Resulting kinetic data were used to determine the binding constants of micelle-substrate (K_B) and micelle-ninhydrin (K_Nin).

Nascent-HBr-Catalyzed Removal of Orthogonal Protecting Groups in Aqueous Surfactants

Organic reactions in the aqueous environment have recently emerged as a promising research area. The generation of nascent-HBr from the slow hydrolysis of the dispersed catalyst, benzyl bromide, with the interior water present in the hydrophobic core of the confined micellar medium in aqueous surfactant is described for the first time. The sustained-release nascent-HBr enabled the chemoselective cleavages of acid-sensitive orthogonal functionalities present in carbohydrates, amino alcohols, and hydroxylated acyclic compounds in good to excellent yields.

Surfactant-Assisted Fabrication of Alumina-Doped Amorphous Silica Nanofiltration Membranes with Enhanced Water Purification Performances

Surfactant-templated 5 mol% Al₂O₃-doped silica membranes nanofiltration membranes were synthesized via the sol-gel method, and afterward, were optimized, and tested with respect to the permeability and rejection rate. The disordered silica network was stabilized by doping 5 mol% alumina. Tetraethyl orthosilicate and aluminum isopropoxide were used as the silica and alumina precursors, respectively. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used not only as a pore-forming agent, but also to control the reaction rate of the aluminum isopropoxide, thus obtaining highly homogeneous materials. The results about filtration of model solutions showed that the optimized membranes are featured by both a relatively high water permeability (1.1–2.3 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ ·bar⁻¹) and a high rejection for salts (74% for NaCl, and >95% for MgSO₄ and Na₂SO₄) and organic pollutants (e.g., about 98% for caffeine). High rejection of divalent ions and organic molecules was also observed when a real wastewater effluent was filtered. The influence of the synthesis conditions on the membrane performance is discussed.

Kinetics of fluoride-catalysed synthesis of organosilica colloids in aqueous solutions of amphiphiles

Reactions involving hydrophobic reactants in water can be much accelerated in organic solvent-free solutions containing amphiphiles at neutral pH and room temperature. Previously, we demonstrated that organosilica colloidal particles could be conveniently synthesized by a versatile salt-catalysis method in solutions modified with various amphiphilic molecules. The method precludes the use of any solvent, any added form of energy (thermal or mechanical), and any strong (or hazardous) acids/bases. Herein, the kinetic properties of the reaction were systematically investigated for fluoride-catalysed synthesis of colloidal organosilica from a thiol-functionalized organosilane precursor, (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Continuous, real-time ATR-FTIR measurements allowed probing the time evolution of organosilica condensation in different reaction systems, containing one of the following: non-ionic surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 40, Tween 60, Tween 80, Triton X-100), anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulphate; SDS), cationic surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide; CTAB), and amphiphilic polymers (polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinylpyrrolidone). Overall, while some amphiphile-specific properties were revealed, fluoride-catalysed synthesis was ultrafast with a universal two-phase kinetic scheme (e.g. transition within 5–10 min) for all amphiphiles studied.

Systematic real-time ATR-FTIR studies reveal ultrafast two-phase kinetics of sodium fluoride-catalysed synthesis of organosilica colloids in purely aqueous, amphiphile-assisted systems.

Alkaline Hydrolysis of Methyl Decanoate in Surfactant-Based Systems

Surfactant-modified reaction systems are one approach to perform organic reactions with water as the solvent involving hydrophobic reactants. Herein, the alkaline hydrolysis of the long-chain methyl decanoate in cationic and nonionic surfactant-modified systems is reported. The physicochemical behavior of the reaction mixture and the performance of the alkaline hydrolysis were systematically investigated. In water as the solvent, the reaction is slow, but at elevated temperatures, the alkaline hydrolysis of methyl decanoate is accelerated because the reaction product sodium decanoate acts as an ionic surfactant, leading to an increased solubility of methyl decanoate in the aqueous phase. The rate can be significantly increased by the addition of surfactants as solubilizers. In nonionic TX-100 solutions, the reaction rate can be increased by a factor of about 100 for a surfactant concentration of 5 wt %. If cationic surfactants are applied, the reaction rate can be further increased due to the electrostatic interaction between the hydroxide ions in solution and the charged head groups of the cationic micelles.

Influence of Micellar Media on Extraction of Copper(II) from Sulphate and Chloride Solutions using an N,N′-Bis(salicylideneaminoethyl)amine Multidentate Schiff Base

The extraction properties of several organic ligands in micellar media have been investigated. In this paper, the extraction behavior of Schiff base ligand N,N′-bis(salicylideneaminoethyl)amine (H2SALDIEN) in the presence and absence of ionic surfactants in concentrated sulphate and chloride media has been studied. The physicochemical properties of H2SALDIEN, namely acidity, distribution, and extraction power were determined in pure water-chloroforme mixture (50 : 50) and in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) micelles and were compared. The best distribution of H2SALDIEN occurs at low acidity and at high concentrations of SDS. Conversely, in the case of CTAB the best distribution is observed at low concentrations of surfactant and at the lowest acidity. The recovery of copper(II) from highly concentrated sulphate and chloride solutions was shown to be exalted with synergistic SDS- and CTAB-H2SALDIEN micellar mixtures using solvent extraction technique. Generally, the synergistic extraction seems to be more pronounced in presence of SDS compared with CTAB in both chloride and sulphate media.

Polymeric Ionic Liquid Nanoparticle Emulsions as a Corrosion Inhibitor in Anticorrosion Coatings

In this contribution, we report the facile preparation of cross-linked polymerizable ionic liquid (PIL)-based nanoparticles via thiol-ene photopolymerization in a miniemulsion. The synthesized PIL nanoparticles with a diameter of about 200 nm were fully characterized with regard to their chemical structures, morphologies, and properties using different techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. To gain an in-depth understanding of the physical and morphological structures of the PIL nanoparticles in an emulsion, small-angle neutron scattering and ultra-small-angle neutron scattering were used. Neutron scattering studies revealed valuable information regarding the formation of cylindrical ionic micelles in the spherical nanoparticles, which is a unique property of this system. Furthermore, the PIL nanoparticle emulsion was utilized as an inhibitor in a self-assembled nanophase particle (SNAP) coating. The corrosion protection ability of the resultant coating was examined using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the PIL nanoparticle emulsion in the SNAP coating acts as an inhibitor of corrosion and is promising for fabricating advanced coatings with improved barrier function and corrosion protection.
