Abstract
Background Adolescent bipolar depression (ABD) refers to depressive episodes that arise in adolescent patients with bipolar disorder. Its identification and diagnosis are challenging, and it is characterized by a high rate of misdiagnosis and disability. Studies have revealed that patients with ABD are more prone to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) compared to those with unipolar depression. However, the neuropathophysiological mechanisms behind NSSI in ABD remain unclear. Therefore, this study employed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) technology to investigate the potential relationship between NSSI and neurometabolism in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) of patients with ABD. Methods This study compared brain biochemical metabolism between ABD with and without NSSI. Forty ABD were recruited and divided into groups with (n=21) and without NSSI (n=19). Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) was used to detect the ratio of biochemical metabolites in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) of all patients. Results There was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) in the age, gender, only child status, residential status, education level, age of onset, disease course, family history, and 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score between patients in the NSSI group and those without NSSI group. The N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/creatine (Cr) of patients with NSSI was lower than that of patients without NSSI, and the difference was statistically significant (Z=-4.347,P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in choline (Cho)/Cr and myo-inositol (mI)/Cr between the group with NSSI and the group without NSSI (P>0.05).There is a positive correlation (r=0.703,P<0.00625) between Cho/Cr and HAMD scores in patients with NSSI, while there is a varying degree of negative correlation (r=-0.605,P=0.006;r=0.624,P=0.004) between mI/Cr and age and onset age in patients without NSSI. There is no correlation (P>0.05) between other indicators. Conclusion Compared with ABD without NSSI, ABD with NSSI have reduced NAA/Cr metabolism in the vmPFC brain area. The level of membrane phospholipid breakdown metabolism in the vmPFC brain area of ABD with NSSI may be related to the severity of depression. The level of phosphoinositol cycle in the vmPFC brain area of ABD without NSSI may be related to age or onset age. Therefore, further validation was required.

Abstract
The exact neurobiological mechanisms of bipolar disorder (BD) remain unknown. However, some neurometabolites could be implicated, including Glutamate (Glu), Glutamine (Gln), Glx, and N-acetylaspartate (NAA). Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-MRS) allows one to quantify these metabolites in the human brain. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature to compare their levels between BD patients and healthy controls (HC). The main inclusion criteria for inclusion were 1H-MRS studies comparing levels of Glu, Gln, Glx, and NAA in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and hippocampi between patients with BD in clinical remission or a major depressive episode and HC. Thirty-three studies were included. NAA levels were significantly lower in the left white matter PFC (wmPFC) of depressive and remitted BD patients compared to controls and were also significantly higher in the left dorsolateral PFC (dlPFC) of depressive BD patients compared to HC. Gln levels were significantly higher in the ACC of remitted BD patients compared to in HC. The decreased levels of NAA of BD patients may be related to the alterations in neuroplasticity and synaptic plasticity found in BD patients and may explain the deep white matter hyperintensities frequently observed via magnetic resonance imagery.

Distinct patterns of altered quantitative T1ρ and functional BOLD response associated with history of suicide attempts in bipolar disorder. Brain Imaging Behav 2022; 16:820-833. Abstract
Despite the high risk for suicide, relatively few studies have explored the relationship between suicide and brain imaging measures in bipolar disorder. In addition, fewer studies have explored the possibility that altered brain metabolism may be associated with suicide attempt. To begin to fill in these gaps, we evaluated functional (task based fMRI) and metabolic (quantitative T1ρ) differences associated with suicide attempt in participants with bipolar disorder. Thirty-nine participants with bipolar disorder underwent fMRI during a flashing checkerboard task and 27 also underwent quantitative T1ρ. The relationship between neuroimaging and history of suicide attempt was tested using multiple regression while adjusting for age, sex, and current mood state. Differences between two measures of suicide attempt (binary: yes/no and continuous: number of attempts) were quantified using the corrected Akaike Information Criterion. Participants who had attempted suicide had greater fMRI task-related activation in visual areas and the cerebellum. The number of suicide attempts was associated with a difference in BOLD response in the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and cerebellum. Increased quantitative T1ρ was associated with number of suicide attempts in limbic, basal ganglia, and prefrontal cortex regions. This study is a secondary analysis with a modest sample size. Differences between measures of suicide history may be due to differences in statistical power. History of suicide was associated with limbic, prefrontal, and cerebellar alterations. Results comparing those with and without suicide attempts differed from results using number of suicide attempts, suggesting that these variables have different neurobiological underpinnings.

Abstract
To identify the pathophysiological mechanism of bipolar disorder (BD) patients with anxiety symptoms, we analyzed the differences of brain biochemical metabolism in BD patients with and without anxiety symptoms. We collected 39 BD patients who had been untreated with drugs in one month and were divided into the anxiety symptoms group (20 cases) and non-anxiety symptoms group (19 cases) according to whether they had anxiety symptoms. We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to detect the biochemical metabolite ratios of the prefrontal whiter matter (PWM) in all patients. The right PWM mI/Cr ratios in BD patients with anxiety symptoms were higher than those in BD patients without anxiety symptoms and the Cho/Cr ratios in the left PWM were negatively correlated with age and age of onset in BD patients with anxiety symptoms. These findings indicated that BD patients with anxiety symptoms have increased levels of inositol metabolism in the right PWM. Furthermore, the level of membrane phospholipid catabolism in the left PWM of BD patients with anxiety symptoms decreased with increasing age and onset age. Our results provide some references for the pathophysiological mechanism in BD patients with anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
The last four decades have witnessed tremendous growth in research studies applying neuroimaging methods to evaluate pathophysiological and treatment aspects of psychiatric disorders around the world. This article provides a brief history of psychiatric neuroimaging research in Brazil, including quantitative information about the growth of this field in the country over the past 20 years. Also described are the various methodologies used, the wealth of scientific questions investigated, and the strength of international collaborations established. Finally, examples of the many methodological advances that have emerged in the field of in vivo neuroimaging are provided, with discussion of the challenges faced by psychiatric research groups in Brazil, a country of limited resources, to continue incorporating such innovations to generate novel scientific data of local and global relevance.

Abstract
The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is involved in emotion regulation and salience processing. Prior research has implicated ACC dysfunction in suicidal ideation (SI) and suicidal behavior. This study aimed to quantify ACC glutamatergic concentrations and to examine relationships with SI in a sample of healthy and depressed adolescents. Forty adolescents underwent clinical evaluation and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) at 3 T, utilizing a 2-dimensional J-averaged PRESS sequence sampling a medial pregenual ACC voxel. Cerebrospinal fluid-corrected ACC metabolite concentrations were compared between healthy control (HC, n = 16), depressed without SI (Dep/SI-, n = 13), and depressed with SI (Dep/SI+, n = 11) youth using general linear models covarying for age, sex, and psychotropic medication use. Relationships between ACC metabolites and continuous measures of SI were examined using multiple linear regressions. ROC analysis was used to determine the ability of glutamate+glutamine (Glx) and the N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/Glx ratio to discriminate Dep/SI- and Dep/SI+ adolescents. Dep/SI+ adolescents had higher Glx than Dep/SI- participants (padj = 0.012) and had lower NAA/Glx than both Dep/SI- (padj = 0.002) and HC adolescents (padj = 0.039). There were significant relationships between SI intensity and Glx (pFDR = 0.026), SI severity and NAA/Glx (pFDR = 0.012), and SI intensity and NAA/Glx (pFDR = 0.004). ACC Glx and NAA/Glx discriminated Dep/SI- from Dep/SI+ participants. Uncoupled NAA-glutamatergic metabolism in the ACC may play a role in suicidal ideation and behavior. Longitudinal studies are needed to establish whether aberrant glutamatergic metabolism corresponds to acute or chronic suicide risk. Glutamatergic biomarkers may be promising targets for novel risk assessment and interventional strategies for suicidal ideation and behavior.

Abstract
The role of the serotonin transporter promoter-linked polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) in psychiatric disease remains unclear. Behavioral traits could serve as alternative outcomes that are stable, precede psychopathology, and capture more sub-clinical variation. We test associations between 5-HTTLPR and (1) behavioral traits and (2) clinical diagnoses of anxiety and depression. Second and third generation participants (N=203, 34.2±13.8 years, 54% female) at high- or low- familial risk for depression (where risk was defined by the presence of major depression in the 1st generation) were assessed longitudinally using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-lifetime interview, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, and the NEO-Five Factor Inventory. High (but not low)-risk offspring with two risk (short, s) alleles had higher impulsivity (+13%), hostility (+31%) and neuroticism (+23%). SS was associated higher rates of panic (OR=7.05 [2.44, 20.38], p=0.0003) and phobic (OR=2.68[1.04, 6.93], p=0.04), but not other disorders. Impulsivity accounted for 16% of associations between 5-HTTLPR and panic, and 52% of association between 5-HTTLPR and phobias. We show that 5-HTTLPR predicts higher impulsivity, hostility, and neuroticism, and that impulsivity could serve as a useful independent outcome or intermediary phenotype in genetic studies of anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent many studies found the abnormal neurometabolites in the acute bipolar disorder (BD). However, limited studies were to detect neurometabolites in remitted BD, comparison between acute and remitted BD is conductive to understand the outcome of neurometabolites. This study sought to investigate the differences in neurometabolites between remitted and depressed BD patients using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). METHODS Three subject groups were enrolled: 22 remitted BD patients, 22 depressed BD patients and 24 healthy controls. All subjects underwent 1H-MRS to measure N-acetylaspartate (NAA), Choline (Cho), myo-Inositol (mI) and Creatine (Cr) of several bilateral areas potentially involved in BD: prefrontal whiter matter (PWM), thalamus and putamen. The neurometabolite ratios were compared among three groups. The correlations between abnormal neurometabolite ratios and clinical data were computed. RESULTS The lower bilateral PWM NAA/Cr ratios were found in depressed BD patients than remitted BD patients and healthy controls, no differences were found between the remitted BD patients and controls. For depressed BD patients, left PWM NAA/Cr ratios showed negative correlation with age of onset, right PWM NAA/Cr ratios showed positive correlation with duration of illness. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest the abnormal neurometabolites in the prefrontal lobe whiter may occur in the depressed BD. The remitted BD may resemble healthy subjects in terms of neurometabolites. In addition, abnormal neurometabolites in prefrontal lobe whiter may correlate with the age of onset and illness length.
