Abstract
OBJECTIVE Attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD) has negative consequences for children. The effectiveness of medical interventions and educational outcomes are strongly influenced by expectations, which can be modulated by nocebo effects. The aims of this study were to compare the nocebo effect on pain perception and attention in children with and without ADHD as well as to characterize the associations of the nocebo effect with personal variables, such as anxiety, sleep, and pain catastrophizing. METHODS Data were collected from 30 children with and without ADHD. The nocebo effect was induced using an inactive pill, "increasing" pain perception and attention deficits. Experimental thermal pain was evoked using a thermode and recorded using a computerized visual analog scale. Attention abilities were measured with the Stop-Signal Task. We also used questionnaires to measure personal variables. RESULTS When combining groups, the nocebo treatment led to comparable nocebo effects for pain (increased pain perception) and attention (increased time needed for inhibition). When comparing groups, the nocebo effect on pain perception was similar for children with and without ADHD. Inattention, learning problems, anxiety, and sleep problems were associated with the nocebo response for pain and attention. CONCLUSION This exploratory study conducted in an experimental setting emphasizes the importance of managing children's expectations for pain perception and attention as well as the potentially deleterious impact of negative suggestions on elementary school children.

Abstract
Introduction The process of co-creation can enable more effective, agile and integrated healthcare solutions achieving outcomes that effectively translate to healthcare delivery. Collaborative knowledge generation is particularly important in fields such as pediatric chronic pain where there is a complex interplay between biological, social, environmental, emotional, familial and school factors. The co-creation initiative described here was designed to amplify the voices of youth with chronic pain and their families and a variety of key stakeholders and generate novel approaches to the management of chronic pediatric pain in the setting of the South Australian Pediatric Chronic Pain Service. Methods Stakeholders who were identified as influential in this ecosystem were allocated to 6 groups. A skilled facilitator co-prepared and delivered the workshop, engaging participants in three structured activities. Firstly, the challenges to service delivery were outlined, followed by the groups discussing what is currently working. The second activity involved lateral thinking without restrictions on time, resources or system to generate solutions to the key challenges presented. Finally, stakeholders were asked to agree on a generated solution from Activity 2 and build a case for actionable implementation of this solution. Data were summarised by the workshop facilitator and reflexive thematic analysis was used for coding and generating themes. Results From Activity 1, six themes collectively demonstrated that stakeholders valued many of the existing strengths of the service delivery, but some areas such as pain education was undervalued. Activity 2 generated solutions from high-level ideas to more day-to- day management strategies. Each of six groups generated unique solutions to an identified challenge for Activity 3. Discussion Engaging a wide variety of stakeholders in collaborative knowledge generation successfully provided the South Australian Pediatric Chronic Pain Service with a variety of novel, scalable solution across the healthcare continuum. Equally important is that this initiative helped to raise awareness about the complex issues faced in pediatric chronic pain care and helped to establish new partnerships that have led to enhanced service delivery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common. They affect abilities for carrying out daily tasks and influence different psychological aspects. In addition to standard treatment, psychological treatments have been suggested. The aim was to investigate the effects of psychological treatments on patients with painful TMD in a short- and long-term perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search was conducted in the databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Registry of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) reporting psychological interventions for TMD. Registered beforehand in PROSPERO (CRD42022320106). In total, 18 RCTs were included; six RCTs that could be used in the meta-analysis, and all 18 RCTs were used in the narrative synthesis. Risk of bias was assessed by the Cochrane's tool for assessing risk of bias and certainty of evidence by GRADE. RESULTS The narrative synthesis indicates that psychological treatment options seem equivalent to standard treatment for painful TMD. The meta-analysis showed that a combination of psychological treatment and standard treatment and manual treatment (very low-quality evidence) are significantly better in pain reduction than just counselling and standard treatments of TMD. CONCLUSION This study indicates that psychological treatments seem to reduce pain intensity in individuals with painful TMD, and that the effect seems to be equally good as standard treatment. However, a combination of psychological treatments and standard treatments seems to have an even better effect. This indicates that psychological treatments are promising as an additional treatment approach for painful TMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents with recurrent pain miss out from school more often than pain-free peers. Research has so far used cross-sectional designs, focusing on non-specific absenteeism in clinical samples. Hence, it is unknown whether estimates of absenteeism are specifically linked to the pain itself or reflects the characteristics of clinical samples. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to prospectively explore pain-related school absenteeism in a non-clinical sample, its variance and potential risk factors. METHODS This prospective study followed a cohort of 1300 Sweden-based adolescents (mean age = 16.9; 17.2% immigrants; 62.7% girls) with recurrent pain (headache, abdominal and/or musculoskeletal pain) through self-reports at two assessment points 12 months apart. RESULTS Overall, 64.2% reported any absenteeism at follow-up and about half of these (26.2%) reported frequent absenteeism. Adolescents who indicated missing school were more often girls, slightly older and had a higher overall pain burden and stressor levels. Yet, after adjusting for previous absenteeism, independent predictors were age, pain intensity, medication use and stress associated with school attendance. Further to this, immigrant status predicted frequent absenteeism. CONCLUSIONS Many adolescents with pain frequently miss out from school due to pain. Identified risk factors points at pain characteristics and coping, stressors associated with participation and advancing age. Taken together, the burden of pain and its correlates emerge earlier and escalate with increasing age hence, early interventions targeting broader domains are needed. SIGNIFICANCE This study adds substantially to the field by estimating the prevalence of pain-specific school absenteeism in a large sample of adolescents with recurrent pain in the general population using a prospective design. Furthermore, it identifies risk factors of pain-specific absenteeism from a broader context of the adolescent's life with independent predictors being the previous history of absenteeism, age, immigrant status, pain intensity, medication use and stress related to school attendance.

Effects of COVID-19 on Adolescent Mental Health and Internet Use by Ethnicity and Gender: A Mixed–Method Study. Abstract
Evidence suggests that mental health problems in young people have been exacerbated by COVID-19, possibly related to a lack of social connection. Young people report using the internet for connecting with their peers and mental health support. However, how they may have used the internet for support during COVID-19 is not clear. We wanted to know how mood and internet use may have changed in young people during COVID-19 and if this was different for those with and without depression symptoms. 108 adolescents were recruited. Participants with high and low levels of depressive symptomatology answered questions about their mood, internet use, loneliness and life satisfaction during July and August 2020. We found that the high depression group reported significantly more loneliness and less life satisfaction than the low depression group. We found that most young people used the internet for mental health information during COVID-19 but that the high depression group used the internet more for mental health information than the low depression group. The high depression group also had a worsening of mood compared to the low depression group during COVID-19. We found that Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic participants reported increased use of the internet compared to White participants during COVID-19 and that the role of the family facilitated coping during COVID-19 for some adolescents, but for others, it made the lockdown more difficult. Finally, we found that adolescents perceived school anxiety as stressful as COVID-19. To conclude this study supports the use of the internet as a way to help young people with mental health challenges. It also suggests that the internet is a way to help young people from ethnic minorities, who otherwise might be hard to reach, during challenging times. This study also shows that supportive family units can be important during times of stress for young people and that school anxiety is a major issue for young people in today’s society even outside of the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE School anxiety is a prevalent mental health concern that drives school-related disability among youth with chronic pain. The only available measure of school anxiety-the School Anxiety Inventory, Short Version (SAI-SV)-lacks content specificity for measuring school anxiety in pediatric pain populations. We aimed to refine the SAI-SV by obtaining qualitative data about unique school situations that are anxiety-provoking for youth with pain and characterizing the nature of symptoms experienced in these situations. METHODS Adolescents with chronic pain (n = 16) completed a semistructured interview focused on experiences with anxiety in school-related academic and social contexts. We employed thematic analysis to extend the empirical understanding of school anxiety from the perspective of patients suffering from pain and to generate new item content. The content was refined with iterative feedback from a separate group of adolescents with chronic pain (n = 5) and a team of expert pain psychologists (n = 3). RESULTS We identified six themes within the data and generated new items designed to capture anxiety related to negative interactions with teachers and peers, falling behind with schoolwork, and struggles with concentration and fatigue. Participants and experts rated new item content as highly relevant for use among youth with pain. The updated item bank was named the School Anxiety Inventory for Chronic Pain. CONCLUSIONS Future research is needed to complete the psychometric evaluation of the item bank and finalize items to be included in a measure that can be used in research and clinical settings. Implications for treating school-related anxiety among youth with pain are also discussed.

Abstract
Chronic pain affects 1 in 5 youth, many of whom manage their pain using a biopsychosocial approach. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the way that healthcare is delivered. As part of a larger program of research, this study aimed to understand the impact of the pandemic on pediatric chronic pain care delivery including impact on patients’ outcomes, from the perspective of pediatric healthcare providers. A qualitative descriptive study design was used and 21 healthcare providers from various professional roles, clinical settings, and geographic locations across Canada were interviewed. Using a reflexive thematic analysis approach 3 themes were developed: (1) duality of pandemic impact on youth with chronic pain (i.e., how the pandemic influenced self-management while also exacerbating existing socioeconomic inequalities); (2) changes to the healthcare system and clinical practices (i.e., triaging and access to care); (3) shift to virtual care (i.e., role of institutions and hybrid models of care). These findings outline provider perspectives on the positive and negative impacts of the pandemic on youth with chronic pain and highlight the role of socioeconomic status and access to care in relation to chronic pain management during the pandemic in a high-income country with a publicly funded healthcare system.

Abstract
Background: Several studies have reported an association between temporomandibular disorder pain (TMD-P) and emotional disorders in children and adolescents. However, no studies have reported if self-reported TMD-P in Saudi Arabia is associated with psychosocial symptoms. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the association between self-reported TMD-P with depression, anxiety and somatic problems in children and adolescents in Saudi Arabia. The hypothesis was that there is an association between self-reported TMD-P and psychological symptoms among children and adolescents. Materials and Methods: The included participants were randomly selected boys and girls aged between 10 and 18 years, with a mean (SD) age of 14.0 (2.3) years. Out of 633 children and adolescents that were invited to participate, 509 voluntarily agreed to participate, and 466 completed all questionnaires. The questionnaires included items retrieved from the Youth Self Report (YSR) and Axis II of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) besides demographic data, medical history, and presence of oral parafunctions. To assess the presence of self-reported TMD-Pain, each participant was verbally asked two validated questions regarding the presence of TMD-P and dysfunction (2Q-TMD). Results: Self-reported TMD-P in children and adolescents was significantly associated with anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and social problems (P < 0.0001). Further, the frequencies of anxiety, depression, and somatic disorders were more evident among children and adolescents who suffered from TMD-P (P < 0.0001). The odds of reporting TMD-P in children and adolescents was 1.4 times for border line and clinical diagnosis scores for anxiety and withdrawal depression domains, and 2.6 times for the somatic symptoms' domains. However, in the multiple regression model after controlling for possible confounders, only somatic symptoms and social scores were significant. Moreover, self-reported TMD-P was twice as prevalent among girls compared to boys. Conclusion: This study reports a significant association between psychosocial burden and presence of self-reported TMD-Pain, with a stronger impact on girls than boys. There were significantly higher number of participants with self-reported TMD-P reporting a poor oral and general health. In addition, self-reported TMD-P was higher among those with borderline and clinically diagnosed anxiety/depression scores. Based on this finding, the current study supports that an early approach and recognition of children and adolescents with anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and TMD problems. This could result in a lesser burden for these children and adolescents both in regard to pain and psychosocial implications with increased quality of life.

Abstract
Pain is a universal experience, but it has been challenging to adequately define. The revised definition of pain recently published by the International Association for the Study of Pain addressed important shortcomings of the previous version; however, it remains narrow in its focus on sensory and emotional features of pain, failing to capture the substantial roles of cognitive and social core components of the experience and their importance to advances in pain management. This paper reviews evidence and theoretical models for the significant role social and cognitive factors play in pain experience and we argue that without explicit recognition of these core components in the definition, significant nuances are lost at a cost to understanding and clinical management of pain. A focus on sensory and emotional features perpetuates biomedical interventions and research, whereas recognition of cognitive and social features supports a multidimensional model of pain, advances in interdisciplinary care, and the benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy and self‐management interventions. We also explore the six Key Notes that accompany the new definition of pain, discuss their application to the understanding of pain in childhood, and, in doing so, further explore social and cognitive implications. Considerations are also described for assessment and treatment of pain in pediatric populations.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic pain is defined as a pain lasting more than 3–6 months. It is estimated that 25% of the pediatric population may experience some kind of pain in this context. Adolescence, corresponding to a particular period of development, seems to present the ideal territory for the appearance of maladaptive mechanisms that can trigger episodes of persistent or recurrent pain. Methods A narrative review, in the PubMed/Medline database, in order to synthetize the available evidence in the approach to chronic pain in adolescents, highlighting its etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Results Pain is seen as a result from the interaction of biological, psychological, individual, social, and environmental factors. Headache, abdominal pain, and musculoskeletal pain are frequent causes of chronic pain in adolescents. Pain not only has implications on adolescents, but also on family, society, and how they interact. It has implications on daily activities, physical capacity, school performance, and sleep, and is associated with psychiatric comorbidities, such as anxiety and depression. The therapeutic approach of pain must be multimodal and multidisciplinary, involving adolescents, their families, and environment, using pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Discussion and conclusion The acknowledgment, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic pain in adolescent patients seem not to be ideal. The development of evidence-based forms of treatment, and the training of health professionals at all levels of care are essential for the diagnosis, treatment, and early referral of these patients.

Educational Needs and Resources for Teachers Working with Students with Chronic Pain: Results of a Delphi Study. SUSTAINABILITY 2021. Abstract
Children and adolescents spend most of their time at school. Therefore, teachers could be of help to improve the quality of life of students with chronic pain while they are at school. The aim of this study was to identify teachers’ educational needs and resources to help improve the adjustment to and function in the school of students with chronic pain. A Delphi survey including two rounds was conducted. Overall, 49 needs were identified in the first round. They were related to education, training, organization/logistics, and communication with the family and the health care center. Among the most important needs, based on the importance given and consensus reached, were (1) having information about the most appropriate attitudes and responses to a student with chronic pain, (2) how to reduce absenteeism, (3) how to ease the return to school after a long absence due to his or her pain problem, and (4) how to establish effective communication with the family. The results of this study provide new important data on the educational needs and resources which teachers would like to have to help their students with chronic pain at school, which could be used to develop educative programs for teachers.

Abstract
AbstractPoor posture has been shown to decrease both visceral and respiratory/circulatory function as well as to increase neuro-musculoskeletal system stress. Improper postures of children at school and in daily life can affect their physical and psychological development. In particular, many children who refuse to go to school or who have experienced school refusal have physical and mental problems. Given that posture is closely related to one’s psychological state, modifying one’s posture can improve both physical and psychological health problems. This study examined the changes to school-refusing students’ physical and psychological condition after attending an intervention to improve their posture. The participants were 65 high school students who have experienced school refusal and were attending a program to modify their posture for 2 months. Their posture and psychological states were recorded both pre- and post-intervention with the following measurements: postural alignment and spinal curve according to a sagittal plane, the General Health Questionnaire 30 (GHQ), and the Subjective Adjustment Scale (SAS). Post-intervention, most of the participants saw improvement in their postural alignment (e.g., trunk inclination in standing position, P < 0.001, 95%CI [2.00, 4.00]). Participants with improved standing posture post-intervention had higher SAS scores (e.g., feeling of acceptance and trust, P < 0.05, 95%CI [−3.00, −0.00]). We found that easy-to-implement postural interventions have a positive effect on students’ mental health. Furthermore, it was suggested that their adjustment to school would also improve as their posture improved. The contribution of this study shows that it is possible to care for the physical and mental health of students without using special facilities and techniques. It is hoped that the findings of this study will lead to an improved adjustment to both school or novel environments, as well as prevent health-based school refusal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chronic pain is a common and debilitating health problem that impacts up to one third of children and adolescents. The pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic pain are complex, but considerable research links dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and chronic pain in adults. No review of ANS functioning has been conducted in pediatric chronic pain. We systematically reviewed studies examining ANS activity among youth with primary chronic pain conditions. METHODS A systematic search of PsycINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL was conducted using specific search terms. Articles were included if studies measured heart rate, blood pressure, heart rate variability, galvanic skin responses, or pupillometry among children or adolescents with a chronic pain condition. Studies examining these factors in the context of a specific disease-related pain condition were excluded. RESULTS Of the 1304 articles screened, 15 studies met the criteria for inclusion in this review. All included studies were cross-sectional and primarily included youth with abdominal pain. Results revealed preliminary evidence of reduced parasympathetic activity among youth with pain as measured by heart rate variability. However, results were mixed across ANS indices. Measurement and procedural differences, in addition to a lack of control groups in some studies, limit the interpretability of the reviewed findings. DISCUSSION Additional studies with larger and more diverse samples of youth with various chronic primary pain conditions are needed to delineate possible relationships among ANS functioning and the development and maintenance of chronic pain in children and adolescents. Clinical implications and avenues for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Youth with chronic pain and youth who have experienced stressors are at risk for poor outcomes; however, little is known about the intersection of pain and stressors. This study aims to understand the prevalence of stressors among youth with chronic pain and the relationship between stressors and pain-related outcomes. Seven hundred and seventy youth with chronic pain aged 8–18 (Mage = 14.15 years, 70% female) reported pain characteristics, stressors, anxiety, disability, and quality of life. Most participants (82%) endorsed at least one stressor. A greater number of stressors was significantly related to greater anxiety and disability, and lower levels of quality of life. School stressors were significantly associated with functional disability; family, school, and peer stressors were significantly associated with anxiety and quality of life. Stressors are common in youth with chronic pain, and the presence of stressors is related to greater functional impairment. The results of this preliminary study using semi-structured clinical interviews suggest the importance of developing a validated measure that encompasses a wide variety of stressors for youth with pain. Future research on patient-reported stressors, relative intensity, and impact are needed.

Abstract
Adolescents with chronic pain often suffer significant impairment in physical, emotional, and social domains. Surprisingly little is known about executive functioning (EF) in youth with chronic pain or how EF deficits may contribute to functional impairment. Study participants included 60 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 years (M = 14.57). Thirty participants with chronic musculoskeletal pain and 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were recruited from a large Midwestern children's hospital in the United States. Participants completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF-2) as well as multiple measures of functional impairment across key domains: school, social, emotional (anxiety, depression), and physical. Adolescents with chronic musculoskeletal pain reported significantly greater EF impairment compared to healthy age- and gender-matched peers. Clinically elevated risk levels of impairment were reported across all aspects of EF, with many adolescents in the chronic pain group scoring above the clinical risk cut off for working memory (52%), inhibition (45%), and cognitive flexibility (38%). EF was also significantly related to functional impairment across all domains. Findings suggest that EF may have an impact across several critical domains of functioning for youth with chronic pain.

Prevalence of Juvenile Fibromyalgia Syndrome Among Children and Adolescents and its Relationship With Academic Success, Depression and Quality of Life, Çorum Province, Turkey. Abstract
Objectives This study aims to determine the frequency of juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (JFMS) among children and adolescents in Çorum Province, Turkey, and its impact by comparing the levels of academic success, depression and quality of life (QoL) in individuals with and without JFMS. Patients and methods This was a cross-sectional study on 476 children and adolescents (245 boys, 231 girls; mean age 13.81±2.3 years; range, 9 to 17 years). The control group (non-JFMS group) consisted of 105 age- and sex-matched healthy participants (75 girls, 30 boys; mean age 14.1±1.8 years; range; 9 to 17 years). Participants' sociodemographic data, parental information, and school achievement in addition to data on chronic illness and drug use were collected via questionnaires (depression and QoL). A tender point (TP) examination was performed on each participant. Results Thirty-five (7.35%) of the participants (girls, n=25; boys, n=10) were diagnosed with JFMS. The number of minor JFMS diagnostic criteria, number of TPs, depression level and number of days the participants were absent from school were significantly higher in the JFMS group compared with the non-JFMS group (p<0.05). The mean grade point scores of the JFMS group were significantly lower than those of the non-JFMS group (p<0.05). The QoL subgroup scores as assessed by physical functioning, emotional functioning, social functioning and school-related problems of the JFMS group were significantly lower than the non-JFMS group (p<0.05). Age had a statistically significant negative correlation with QoL and school-related problems (r= -0.421, r= -0.494; p<0.05, respectively). Depression was negatively correlated with QoL and school-related problems (r= -0.672, r= -0.731; p<0.05, respectively). Conclusion Juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome affects QoL and can lead to school absenteeism, poor academic performance, depression and anxiety among the school-age population. Early identification of JFMS and early intervention may be the most effective strategy for preventing problems in later life.

Abstract
Background Functional Pain (not detectable organic cause) is often associated with psychological problems and, according to literature, it can lead to severe manifestations. The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between functional pain and psychological disagreement, in a series of school students. Methods An observational questionnaire-based study was performed. A questionnaire was given to a group of students of primary school; the following data were collected in the questionnaire: a) sex and age; b) functional pain; c) relation with relatives, teachers and schoolfellows: d) school failure. Statistical methods: P-value of concordance test and P-value of correlation have been performed with MINITAB 15.1 software. Results Eight hundred nine students, 354 females, 455 males, median age 14 years, participated to the study. Functional Pain was referred from 537/809 students (66%): 265 Females, 272 males: p = 0.155. The difference between the number of pain episodes in females vs. males was statistically significant (p = 0,511), as pain intensity vs. the number of episodes in females (p = 0.001). The most frequent location of pain was abdomen in females, limbs in males. Psychological disagreement was referred from 513/809 students (63%) (260 females; 253 males: p = 0,150). Psychological disagreement was reported with parents (19); siblings (22); other relatives (18); teachers: 42, schoolfellows: 366, relatives as well as school fellows: 46. The correlation between disagreement and functional pain in all the students included in the study was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusions most students reported psychological disagreement and pain. The most frequent cause of disagreement was schoolfellows’ behaviour. The study shows a student’s lack of discussing of their problems with parents, teachers, peer. According to literature, confiance would be a useful treatment for avoiding psychological disagreements and functional pain.

Abstract
Physical disorders and anxiety are frequently comorbid. This study investigates the characteristics of physical disorders, self-rated heath, subjective well-being and anxiety in adolescents. Data were drawn from the Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe cohort study. From 11 countries 11,230 adolescents, aged 14–16 years were included. Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), WHO-5 Well-Being Index and five questions prepared for this study to evaluate physical illnesses and self-rated heath were administered. Anxiety levels were significantly higher in adolescents who reported having physical disability (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.40), suffering from chronic illnesses (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.40), impairments associated to health conditions (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.61), or reported poor to very poor self-rated health (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 1.11). Mediational analyses revealed no direct effect of having a chronic illness/physical disability on subjective well-being, but the indirect effects through higher levels of anxiety were significant. Functional impairment related to health conditions was both directly and indirectly (through higher levels of anxiety) associated with lower well-being. The co-occurrence of anxiety and physical disorders may confer a greater level of disability and lower levels of subjective well-being. Clinicians have to screen anxiety, even in a subthreshold level in patients with choric physical illness or with medically unexplained physical symptoms.
