Abstract
BACKGROUND Daith piercing is a special ear-piercing method that punctures the crus of the helix. The penetrated site at the ear's innermost point is assumed to stimulate a pressure point associated with the vagus nerve. It has been reported that the pierced spot relieves migraine and tension-type headaches by activating vagal afferents, leading to the inhibition of neurons in the caudal trigeminal nucleus via the nucleus tractus solitarii. OBJECTIVE The objective of this narrative literature review is to summarize the current state of knowledge concerning daith piercing for the treatment of migraine and tension-type headaches from the perspectives of the Chinese and Western auricular systems. METHODS PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched using the keywords "daith piercing," "auricular points," "headache," and "acupuncture" from database inception to September 1, 2023. Only studies on humans were eligible; otherwise, no further restrictions were applied to the study designs, type of headache, or patient population of the identified articles. Bibliographies of all eligible studies were screened for further eligible studies. The main outcome of interest was a quantitative measure of pain relief by daith piercing. Secondary outcomes were relapse time of headache and further outcomes related to daith piercing, if available. RESULTS From a total of 186 identified articles, one retrospective study and three case reports fulfilled the inclusion criteria. No clinical trial was identified. The obtained studies describe patients experiencing chronic headaches undergoing daith piercing without changing or reducing their usual medication. In all case studies and the retrospective study, patients reported substantial reductions in pain immediately after daith piercing; however, headache symptoms recurred several weeks to months thereafter. From the perspective of the Chinese and Western auricular systems, no sufficient explanation for the described treatment effect of daith piercing was found. CONCLUSION The available literature, combined with the reported recurrence of pain as well as the associated side effects of daith piercing, indicate that current evidence does not support daith piercing for the treatment of migraine, tension-type headaches, or other headache disorders. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY This paper summarizes what we know about Daith piercing (DP) for chronic migraine and tension-type headache and discusses how DP might work. Current evidence does not support DP as an effective treatment of chronic migraine and tension-type headache. These findings might assist clinicians in discussing this subject with patients as well as guide future research.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Contemporary therapy for advanced castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) employs reagents such as enzalutamide and abiraterone acetate targeting the androgen receptor (AR) transcription axis only provide a temporary response and rapidly develop resistance. Additionally, neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) is an AR pathway-independent and lethal-stage prostate cancer with no standard therapy. Qingdai Decoction (QDT), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, has various pharmacological activities and was widely used for the treatment of different diseases including prostatitis which may contribute to prostate cancer development. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aims to explore the anti-tumor role and potential mechanism of QDT on prostate cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS CRPC prostate cancer cell models and xenograft mice models were established for research. The effect of TCMs on cancer growth and metastasis were determined by CCK-8, wound-healing assays and the PC3-xenografted mice model. The toxicity of QDT in the major organs was investigated by H&E staining. The compound-target network was analyzed with network pharmacology. The correlation of QDT targets with prostate cancer patient's prognosis was analyzed with multiple prostate cancer patient cohorts. The expression of related proteins and mRNA were detected by western blot and real-time PCR. The gene knockdown was achieved with CRISPR-Cas13 technology. RESULTS By integrating functional screening, network pharmacology analysis, CRISPR-Cas13 directed RNA targeting, and molecular biology validation in different prostate cancer models and clinical prostate cancer cohorts, we found that Qingdai Decoction (QDT), a Traditional Chinese Medicine, can repress cancer growth in advanced prostate cancer models in vitro and in vivo in an AR independent manner by targeting NOS3, TGFB1, and NCOA2. CONCLUSION This study not only identified QDT as a novel drug for lethal-stage prostate cancer treatment but also provided an extensive Integrative research paradigm for investigating the roles and mechanisms of TCMs for the treatment of other diseases.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Blood-activating and stasis-transforming traditional Chinese medicines (BAST) are a class of herbs that have the effect of dilating blood vessels and dispersing stagnation. Modern pharmaceutical research has demonstrated that they are capable of improving hemodynamics and micro-flow, resist thrombosis and promote blood flow. BAST contain numerous active ingredients, which can theoretically regulate multiple targets at the same time and have a wide range of pharmacological effects in the treatment of diseases including human cancers. Clinically, BAST have minimal side effects and can be used in combination with Western medicine to improve patients' quality of life, lessen adverse effects and minimize the risk of recurrence and metastasis of cancers. AIM OF THE REVIEW We aimed to summarize the research progression of BAST on lung cancer in the past five years and present a prospect for the future. Particularly, this review further analyzes the effects and molecular mechanisms that BAST inhibit the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Relevant studies about BSAT were collected from PubMed and Web of science. RESULTS Lung cancer is one of the malignant tumors with the highest mortality rate. Most patients with lung cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage and are highly susceptible to metastasis. Recent studies have shown that BAST, a class of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with the function of opening veins and dispersing blood stasis, significantly improve hemodynamics and microcirculation, prevent thrombosis and promote blood flow, and thereby inhibiting the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. In the current review, we analyzed 51 active ingredients extracted from BAST. It was found that BAST and their active ingredients contribute to the prevention of invasion and metastasis of lung cancer through multiple mechanisms, such as regulation of EMT process, specific signaling pathway and metastasis-related genes, tumor blood vessel formation, immune microenvironment and inflammatory response of tumors. CONCLUSIONS BSAT and its active ingredients have showed promising anticancer activity and significantly inhibit the invasion and metastasis of lung cancer. A growing number of studies have realized their potential clinical significance in the therapy of lung cancer, which will provide substantial evidences for the development of new TCM for lung cancer therapy.

Abstract
Background Migraine is a chronic neurological disease causing significant socioeconomic burden and impaired quality of life. Chinese medicine is commonly used for migraine in China. Clinical trials have generated evidence of the effectiveness of Chinese medicine therapies for migraine. However, little is known about how to use these therapies to treat migraine in real-world clinical settings. Methods In this retrospective study, we analyzed data from the electronic medical records (EMRs) of 2,023 migraine patients who attended the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine (GPHCM) between July 2018 and July 2020. Results More than three-quarters (77.21%) of the patients were female. Most (78.20%) of the patients were aged between 18 and 50 years, 18.49% were aged above 50 years, and the remaining 3.31% were under 18 years. Sleep disorders were the most documented comorbidity occurring in 27.29% of patients, and more common in females (29.77%) than male (18.87%). Fatigue was the most frequently reported trigger of migraine attacks among all patients (9.39%), while menstruation was the most common trigger for female patients (10.24%). Less than a quarter of patients (21.01%) reported a history of taking analgesic medication for their migraine. The median treatment duration reported by the patients was 10 days. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was the predominant treatment for migraine at the hospital (88.48%), while pharmacotherapies were prescribed to 28.97% of the patients. CHM was prescribed more often as a sole treatment (53.58% of patients) than combined with pharmacotherapies (27.39% of patients). Among patients who reported improvements after taking CHM, the most frequently used herbs were fu ling and chuan xiong, the most frequent patented CHM product was tong tian oral solution, and the main herbal formulae were chuan xiong cha tiao san and yi qi cong ming tang. Conclusion CHM formulae, such as chuan xiong cha tiao san and yi qi cong ming tang, patented CHM product tong tian oral solution, and some herbs are potentially effective treatments for migraine. As such, CHM can be used as an alternative to conventional pharmacotherapies for migraine and is worth further evaluation in randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
Background: Treatment effect of current pharmacotherapies for migraine is unsatisfying. Discovering new anti-migraine natural products and nutraceuticals from large collections of Chinese medicine classical literature may assist to address this gap. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search in the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine (version 5.0) to obtain migraine-related citations, then screened and scored these citations to identify clinical management of migraine using oral herbal medicine in history. Information of formulae, herbs and symptoms were further extracted. After standardisation, these data were analysed using frequency analysis and the Apriori algorithm. Anti-migraine effects and mechanisms of actions of the main herbs and formula were summarised. Results: Among 614 eligible citations, the most frequently used formula was chuan xiong cha tiao san (CXCTS), and the most frequently used herb was chuan xiong. Dietary medicinal herbs including gan cao, bai zhi, bo he, tian ma and sheng jiang were identified. Strong associations were constructed among the herb ingredients of CXCTS formula. Symptoms of chronic duration and unilateral headache were closely related with herbs of chuan xiong, gan cao, fang feng, qiang huo and cha. Symptoms of vomiting and nausea were specifically related to herbs of sheng jiang and ban xia. Conclusion: The herb ingredients of CXCTS which presented anti-migraine effects with reliable evidence of anti-migraine actions can be selected as potential drug discovery candidates, while dietary medicinal herbs including sheng jiang, bo he, cha, bai zhi, tian ma, and gan cao can be further explored as nutraceuticals for migraine.

Abstract
Background: In the past, systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) have been used to assess the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) in the treatment of migraines. However, robust conclusions have not yet been determined because of variations in the methodological and evidence quality of these SRs/MAs. Objectives: We aimed to assess the methodological and reporting quality of SRs/MAs and evaluate the available evidence of the efficacy of CHM treatment of migraines. Methods: We searched eight electronic databases from inception until 10 January 2022, without language restrictions. Two researchers were independently responsible for study screening and data extraction. The methodological and reporting quality of SRs/MAs were assessed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). The evidence quality of included SRs/MAs was evaluated by Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). In addition, a descriptive analysis of the included SRs/MAs was included. Results: Sixteen SRs/MAs, including 69 outcomes, were finally included in this overview. Data synthesis of the included SRs/MAs outcomes showed that CHM plus Western medicine (WM) was beneficial in the improvement of migraines. In comparison, there was conflicting evidence for the effectiveness of CHM used alone. CHM was better than WM in improving responder rate and acute medication usage and was superior to placebo in improving migraine days, responder rate, and migraine duration. However, there was insufficient evidence to verify the effectiveness of CHM for migraine treatment regarding pain severity and migraine frequency. All the included SRs/MAs showed extremely low methodological and reporting quality. The results of the GRADE system indicated that the quality of most of the pooled evidence was very low. Conclusions: CHM may be beneficial in improving migraines and can be used as a complementary therapy. However, we should treat the conclusions of the evaluated SRs/MAs cautiously because of the low quality of evidence. Future SRs/MAs should focus on improving methodological and reporting quality. High-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are needed to provide strong evidence for the efficacy of CHM treatment of migraines.

Abstract
BackgroundMigraine is a prevalent headache disorder with significant impacts on patients' quality of life and economic burden. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is commonly prescribed for migraine in China. This review aimed to provide a rigorous evaluation of evidence on the efficacy of oral CHM for migraine and explore the correlation between its effect size and treatment duration.MethodsWe searched nine digital databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, AMED, BioMedical Literature, CNKI, CQVIP, and Wanfang Data) from their inceptions to May 2021, with the language being restricted to Chinese and English. Randomized, placebo-controlled trials using oral CHM to treat adult migraine were included. Data screening and extraction were conducted by two independent reviewers. The methodological quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. Meta-analyses were conducted to estimate the effect size using a random effect model, and a robust variance estimation (RVE) model was constructed to explore the correlation between treatment effects and treatment duration. The certainty of the evidence was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. Publication bias was tested using a funnel plot and Egger's test.ResultsA total of 18 RCTs involving 3,015 participants were included. Results of the meta-analyses showed that, at the end of the treatment phase, CHM was more efficacious than placebo in reducing migraine frequency, migraine days, and pain severity, and increasing response rate. Additionally, CHM showed superior effects to placebo in lowering migraine frequency and pain severity at the end of the 4-week follow-up. The RVE model suggested that the benefits of CHM for migraine frequency and pain intensity increased as treatment duration extended. The number of adverse events reported by the CHM and placebo groups was comparable. The certainty of the evidence was graded as “moderate.” No publication bias was detected.ConclusionOral CHM appeared to be more efficacious than placebo for reducing migraine frequency and pain severity. Greater treatment effects were associated with longer treatment duration. Abstract
Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort (known as Chuanxiong in China, CX) is one of the most widely used and long-standing medicinal herbs in China. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is an alkaloid and one of the active components of CX. Over the past few decades, TMP has been proven to possess several pharmacological properties. It has been used to treat a variety of diseases with excellent therapeutic effects. Here, the pharmacological characteristics and molecular mechanism of TMP in recent years are reviewed, with an emphasis on the signal-regulation mechanism of TMP. This review shows that TMP has many physiological functions, including anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptosis properties; autophagy regulation; vasodilation; angiogenesis regulation; mitochondrial damage suppression; endothelial protection; reduction of proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells; and neuroprotection. At present, TMP is used in treating cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive system conditions, cancer, and other conditions and has achieved good curative effects. The therapeutic mechanism of TMP involves multiple targets, multiple pathways, and bidirectional regulation. TMP is, thus, a promising drug with great research potential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted this study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who underwent chemotherapy. DESIGN This was a prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial. NSCLC patients at stage IIIA, IIIB, or IV were randomly assigned to either TCM plus chemotherapy or chemotherapy alone. The comprehensive TCM treatment consisted of Kang Ai injection, herbal decoction, and Zhenqifuzheng capsules. The primary endpoint was quality of life (QOL) measured by the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Lung version 4.0. The secondary endpoints were chemotherapy completion rate, tumor response, and adverse events. All assessments were done at baseline, the third week, and the sixth week. RESULTS Thirty-nine participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group and 36 to the control group. The QOL scores were significantly improved in the treatment group compared with those of the control group in social well-being (cycle 1, P = .048; cycle 2, P = .015), emotional well-being (cycle 1, P = .047; cycle 2, P = 4.29E-05), and functional well-being (cycle 1, P = .030; cycle 2, P = .003), while the QOL scores in the above 3 domains declined in the control group (P < .05). Both groups had a decline in the physical well-being score (cycle 1, P = .042; cycle 2, P = .017) and lung cancer symptom score (cycle 1, P = .001; cycle 2, P = .001) after 2 courses of intervention. The deterioration in physical well-being and lung cancer symptoms was noticeably smaller in the treatment group (P < .05). There were significant differences between the 2 groups in social well-being, emotional well-being, functional well-being, lung cancer symptom domain, and the total score (P < .05). Patients in the treatment group had a significantly lower incidence of platelet reduction than the control group (P = .028) after 2 cycles of treatment. No significant difference in nonhematological adverse events (AEs) was observed. CONCLUSION This study illustrated that comprehensive TCM treatment could promote the QOL of NSCLC patients, alleviate symptoms, and reduce the AEs caused by chemotherapy, verifying the synergistic and attenuating effects of TCM in NSCLC patients undergoing chemotherapy. Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a systematic healthcare system developed from clinical experience based on a scientific model of regulation. TCM relies on unique theories and practices to treat diseases and enhance health. These practices include Chinese herbal medicine and dietetics, acupuncture and moxibustion, and other non-medication therapies such as Chinese bodywork or manual therapy, known as "Tuina", and traditional biofeedback exercises, known as "Qigong" and "Taijiquan". The integration of TCM in Western health systems and research requires a rational communicable theory, scientific proof of efficacy and safety, and quality control measures. Understanding the structural concepts of the TCM language makes possible the parallelism to Western physiology, and the inherent rational use of the reflex therapeutic systems, anti-inflammatory mechanisms and mental training involved, for example, in acupuncture and "Qigong". The results of TCM clinical trials and fundamental research on its nature and mechanisms have encouraged the development and application of well-designed research strategies such as double blinding in acupucture to overcome limitations and resistances in integrating these practices into the existing biomedical paradigms of the West. This review aims to overview some TCM theoretical concepts and the evidence-based clinical application of TCM's leading practices to create an easy-to-consult and condensed source of information, available for the healthcare community, facilitating the understanding and communication between conventional health professionals and TCM practitioners and acupuncturists.

Abstract
Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) that comprises about 90% of all oral cancer cases is associated with poor prognosis due to its highly metastatic nature. The majority of OSCC treatment options are related detrimental side-effects. Hypothesis/Purpose: The present study aimed at deciphering the effects of a bioactive phytochemical, sodium danshensu, on human oral cancer cell metastasis. Methods and Results: The treatment of FaDu and Ca9-22 cells with different doses of sodium danshensu (25, 50, and 100 μM) caused a significant reduction in cellular motility, migration, and invasion, as compared to the untreated cells. This effect was associated with a reduced expression of MMP-2, vimentin and N-cadherin, together with an enhanced expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1. Further investigation on the molecular mechanism revealed that treatment with sodium danshensu caused significant reduction in p38 phosphorylation; however, phosphorylation of ERK1/2 significantly decreased only in FaDu cells, whereas p-JNK1/2 did not show any alteration. A combination of p38 and JNK1/2 inhibitors with sodium danshensu also reduced the migration in the FaDu and Ca9-22 cell lines. Conclusion: Collectively, the present study findings reveal that sodium danshensu execute anti-metastatic effect by suppressing p38 phosphorylation in human oral cancer. The study identifies sodium danshensu as a potential natural anticancer agent that can be used therapeutically to manage highly metastatic OSCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of electrical stimulation (ES) for the treatment of patients with migraine. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure will be searched for eligible studies. All electronic databases will be searched from inception to the present with no language restriction. Two authors will independently carry out study selection, data collection, and study quality assessment, respectively. RevMan 5. 3 software will be used for statistical analysis. RESULTS This study will summarize high quality evidence on the efficacy and safety of ES for the treatment of migraine. CONCLUSION This study will establish the accurate results of ES for migraine to facilitate the clinical practice and guideline development. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER PROSPERO CRD42019147480.
