Abstract
Dendrobium officinale (D. officinale), often used as a dual-use plant with herbal medicine and food applications, has attracted considerable attention for health-benefiting components and wide economic value. The antioxidant ability of D. officinale is of great significance to ensure its health care value and safeguard consumers' interests. However, the common analytical methods for evaluating the antioxidant ability of D. officinale are time-consuming, laborious, and costly. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometrics were employed to establish a rapid and accurate method for the determination of 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) scavenging capacity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in D. officinale. The quantitative models were developed based on the partial least squares (PLS) algorithm. Two wavelength selection methods, namely the genetic algorithm (GA) and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) method, were used for model optimization. The CARS-PLS models exhibited superior predictive performance compared to other PLS models. The root mean square errors of cross-validation (RMSECVs) for ABTS, FRAP, and DPPH were 0.44%, 2.64 μmol/L, and 2.06%, respectively. The results demonstrated the potential application of NIR spectroscopy combined with the CARS-PLS model for the rapid prediction of antioxidant activity in D. officinale. This method can serve as an alternative to conventional analytical methods for efficiently quantifying the antioxidant properties in D. officinale.

Rapid identification of the geographic origin of Taiping Houkui green tea using near-infrared spectroscopy combined with a variable selection method. Abstract
BACKGROUND Most studies focus on the geographically larger production areas in tea traceability. However, famous high-quality tea is often produced in a narrow range of origins, which makes traceability a challenge. In this study, Taiping Houkui (TPHK) green tea of narrow geographical origin was rapidly identified using Fourier-transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy. RESULTS First, spectral information of 114 TPHK samples from four production areas was acquired. Second, the synthetic minority over-sampling technique (SMOTE) was used to balance the sample data set, and three different spectral pre-processing methods were compared. Third, three feature variable selection algorithms were used to obtain the pre-processed spectral features. Finally, extreme learning machine (ELM) models based on the variables obtained from the selected features were established to trace the TPHK origin. The optimized ELM model achieves 95.35% classification accuracy in the test set. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates that the optimized variable selection method in combination with NIR spectroscopy represents a suitable strategy for tea traceability in narrow regions. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

A Data Fusion Model to Merge the Spectra Data of Intact and Powdered Cayenne Pepper for the Fast Inspection of Antioxidant Properties. SUSTAINABILITY 2021. Abstract
Spectroscopy technology has been widely used for the quality assessment of agricultural products, but the models produced in recent studies usually focus on only one sample form. Meanwhile, most products, especially cayenne pepper, are not only in the form of fresh samples but also in powder. Therefore, the research used visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy to predict the antioxidant properties using a fusion model derived from both intact and powdered cayenne pepper. The parameters used to determine these properties include the %inhibition, antioxidant activity, and antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the fusion model at %inhibition was 0.90 (Rcal), 7.63 (RMSEC), 0.84 (Rpred), and 9.16 (RMSEP) while the antioxidant activity had 0.94, 181.82, 0.81 and 340.06, whereas antioxidant capacity produced 0.94, 14.42, 0.82 and 22.64 for Rcal, RMSEC, Rpred, and RMSEP, respectively. The Vis/NIR spectroscopy was able to predict the antioxidant properties in both the intact and powdered cayenne pepper using the fusion model.

Abstract
Artificial neural networks (ANN) were developed for prediction of total dissolved solids, polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity of root vegetables (celery, fennel, carrot, yellow carrot, purple carrot and parsley) extracts prepared from the (i) fresh vegetables, (ii) vegetables dried conventionally at 50 °C and 70 °C, and (iii) the lyophilised vegetables. Two types of solvents were used: organic solvents (acetone mixtures and methanol mixtures) and water. Near-infrared (NIR) spectra were recorded for all samples. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the pre-treated spectra using Savitzky-Golay smoothing showed specific grouping of samples in two clusters (1st: extracts prepared using methanol mixtures and water as the solvents; 2nd: extracts prepared using acetone mixtures as the solvents) for all four types of extracts. Furthermore, obtained results showed that the developed ANN models can reliably be used for prediction of total dissolved solids, polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity of dried root vegetable extracts in relation to the recorded NIR spectra.
