Designing Highly Photoactive Hybrid Aerogels for In-Flow Photocatalytic Contaminant Removal Using Silica-Coated Bacterial Nanocellulose Supports

This study explores the use of silica-coated bacterial nanocellulose (BC) scaffolds with bulk macroscopic yet nanometric internal pores/structures as functional supports for high surface area titania aerogel photocatalysts to design flexible, self-standing, porous, and recyclable BC@SiO₂-TiO₂ hybrid organic-inorganic aerogel membranes for effective in-flow photo-assisted removal of organic pollutants. The hybrid aerogels were prepared by sequential sol-gel deposition of the SiO₂ layer over BC, followed by coating of the resulting BC@SiO₂ membranes with a porous titania aerogel overlayer of high surface area using epoxide-driven gelation, hydrothermal crystallization, and subsequent supercritical drying. The silica interlayer between the nanocellulose biopolymer scaffold and the titania photocatalyst was found to greatly influence the structure and composition, particularly the TiO₂ loading, of the prepared hybrid aerogel membranes, allowing the development of photochemically stable aerogel materials with increased surface area/pore volume and higher photocatalytic activity. The optimized BC@SiO₂-TiO₂ hybrid aerogel showed up to 12 times faster in-flow photocatalytic removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution in comparison with bare BC/TiO₂ aerogels and outperformed most of the supported-titania materials reported earlier. Moreover, the developed hybrid aerogels were successfully employed to remove sertraline drug, a model emergent contaminant, from aqueous solution, thus further demonstrating their potential for water purification.

Polysaccharide-based (nano)materials for Cr(VI) removal

Chromium is a potentially poisonous and carcinogenic species, which originates from human activities and various industries such as leather, steel, iron, and electroplating industries. Chromium is present in various oxidation states, among which hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is highly toxic as a natural contaminant. Therefore, chromium, particularly Cr(VI), must be eliminated from the environment, soil, and water to overcome significant problems due to its accumulation in the environment. There are different approaches such as adsorption, ion exchange, photocatalytic reduction, etc. for removing Cr(VI) from the environment. By converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III), its toxicity is reduced. Cr(III) is essential for the human diet, even in small amounts. Today, biopolymers such as alginate, cellulose, gum, pectin, starch, chitin, and chitosan have received much attention for the removal of environmental pollutants. Biopolymers, particularly polysaccharides, are very useful compounds due to their OH and NH₂ functional groups and some advantages such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and accessibility. Therefore, they can be widely applied in catalytic applications and as efficient adsorbents for the removal of toxic compounds from the environment. This review briefly investigates the application of polysaccharide-based (nano)materials for efficient Cr(VI) removal from the environment using adsorption/reduction, photocatalytic, and chemical reduction mechanisms.

The states of water in tryptophan grafted hydroxypropyl methylcellulose hydrogels and their effect on the adsorption of methylene blue and rhodamine B

Tryptophan (Trp) decorated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) cryogels were prepared by a one-step reaction with citric acid. The increase of Trp content in the 3D network from 0 to 2.18 wt% increased the apparent density from 0.0267 g.cm^-3 to 0.0381 g.cm^-3 and the compression modulus from 94 kPa to 201 kPa, due to hydrophobic interactions between Trp molecules. The increase of Trp content in HPMC-Trp hydrogels increased the amount of non-freezing water, estimated from differential scanning calorimetry, and the amount of freezing water, which was determined by time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance. The adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB) on HPMC-Trp hydrogels increased with Trp content and the amount of freezing water. HPMC-Trp hydrogels could be recycled 6 times keeping the original adsorptive capacity. The diffusional constants of MB and RB tended to increase with Trp content. RB adsorbed on HPMC-Trp hydrogels presented a bathochromic shift of fluorescence.
