Prevalence of Sleep Disturbance and Potential Associated Factors among Medical Students from Mashhad, Iran

The prevalence of sleep disturbance and its possible associated factors among iranian medical students: A cross-sectional study with a national meta-analysis

Background

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep disturbance and its possible associated factors among Iranian medical students. Additionally, a national meta-analysis was conducted to provide a comprehensive overview of sleep disturbance in this population.

Methods

A sample of medical students from Guilan University of Medical Sciences, Iran was included in the study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep disturbance. Demographic and lifestyle factors, as well as academic performance, were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. The data collected from this study were combined with existing studies through a meta-analysis to estimate the overall prevalence of sleep disturbance among Iranian medical students using the random effects model.

Results

A total of 249 medical students participated in the study. The prevalence of sleep disturbance among Guilan University of Medical Sciences medical students was found to be 71.1%. A significant difference was observed in total PSQI means regarding medical students' residency (p < 0.001) and their duration of sleep in the last 24 h (p = 0.006). The national prevalence of sleep disturbances was 59% (95% CI: [51%-66%], I2 = 97%).

Conclusion

Sleep disturbance is highly prevalent among Iranian medical students, with various factors contributing to its occurrence. The findings of this study highlight the need for interventions and strategies to improve sleep quality and overall well-being among this population. The national meta-analysis provides valuable insights into the overall burden of sleep disturbance among Iranian medical students and can serve as a reference for future studies and public health initiatives targeting this issue.

Associations between Sleep Disturbance and Suicidal Ideation Severity in Iranian University Students: Evaluating Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Distress Tolerance

AIM

Although sleep disturbance is associated with suicide ideation, underlying cognitive-affective mechanisms that may explain this association are not well understood. The aim of the present study was to concurrently evaluate whether emotion regulation difficulties and distress tolerance explain this association among Iranian university students.

METHOD

A total of 679 Iranian university students (66.42% females; Mage = 24.34 years, SD = 4.86) completed a battery of online self-report questionnaire. Structural equation modeling was used to empirically explore the relations among variables.

RESULTS

Sleep disturbance was positively associated with suicide ideation. Higher sleep disturbance symptoms were associated with higher levels of suicide ideation. Sleep disturbance was indirectly related to suicide ideation through both emotion regulation difficulties and distress tolerance.

CONCLUSION

Findings expand knowledge of cognitive-emotional processes that may explain the sleep disturbance-suicide ideation association among Iranian university students. Iranian students experiencing sleep disturbance may benefit from intervention strategies targeting emotion regulation skills and distress tolerance to reduce suicide ideation.

Identifying predictors of patient safety competency based on sleep quality in student faculty of nursing and midwifery during the internship period: a multidisciplinary study

BACKGROUND

Ensuring patient safety is of paramount importance in healthcare services. Sleep disorders not only have detrimental effects on the health of healthcare students but also significantly impair their performance, leading to an increased risk of medication errors. These errors can pose a grave threat to the safety and well-being of patients. It is crucial to address and mitigate sleep disorders among internship healthcare students to safeguard the quality of care and minimize potential patient harm.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the predictors of Patient Safety Competency (PSC) based on the sleep quality of internship healthcare students.

METHODS

A study was conducted on 331 students from the Ardabil School of Nursing and Midwifery at Ardabil University of Medical Sciences in northwest Iran from August to December 2022. The participants were selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22.0. Person correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between PSC level, its dimensions, and sleep quality, while multiple linear regression was conducted to identify the predictors of PSC.

RESULTS

The competency of nurses in patient safety was average in both classroom and clinical settings. However, their ability to work as a team with other healthcare professionals scored the lowest. In addition, the quality of sleep was found to be a predictor of patient safety competency among healthcare students during their internships.

CONCLUSIONS

It is important to note that healthcare students tend to have moderate patient safety competence (PSC), which is positively correlated with their sleep quality. Therefore, it is vital to identify the key factors that directly affect PSC. This would enable nursing and midwifery faculty administrators to take preventive measures to enhance patient safety competence in both classroom and clinical settings. Additionally, organizing educational workshops that engage students and improve their sleep quality could improve patient care. Practical courses are recommended for health professionals and students in clinical settings to enhance patient safety competencies. Additionally, student internships should receive hands-on training to improve teamwork and rest conditions.

The Worldwide Prevalence of Sleep Problems Among Medical Students by Problem, Country, and COVID-19 Status: a Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Meta-regression of 109 Studies Involving 59427 Participants

Abstract

Purpose of Review

Several studies have found that medical students have a significant prevalence of sleep issues, such as poor sleep quality, excessive daytime sleepiness, and inadequate sleep duration. The purpose of this review is to carefully evaluate the current research on sleep problems among medical students and, as a result, estimate the prevalence of these disturbances. The EMBASE, PsychINFO, PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science and retrieved article reference lists were rigorously searched and rated for quality. Random effects meta-analysis was performed to compute estimates.

Recent Findings

The current meta-analysis revealed an alarming estimated pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality (K = 95, N = 54894) of 55.64% [95%CI 51.45%; 59.74%]. A total of 33.32% [95%CI 26.52%; 40.91%] of the students (K = 28, N = 10122) experienced excessive sleepiness during the day. The average sleep duration for medical students (K = 35, N = 18052) is only 6.5 h per night [95%CI 6.24; 6.64], which suggests that at least 30% of them get less sleep than the recommended 7-9 h per night.

Summary

Sleep issues are common among medical students, making them a genuine problem. Future research should focus on prevention and intervention initiatives aimed at these groups.
