Abstract
Macrophages undergo activation in response to multiple stimuli, including pathogens, growth factors and natural products. The inflammatory response and oxidative stress play critical roles in such macrophage activation. Some natural products reportedly promote immunoregulatory effects and the control of macrophage activation. Caryocar villosum (Cv), a native amazon plant, contains compounds that are an important source of molecules capable of macrophage activation. Herein, we demonstrate the immunomodulatory effects of oil obtained from Caryocar villosum (CvO) on macrophages. Macrophages were treated with varying concentrations of CvO, and resulting cellular morphological and functional changes were evaluated, including the production of nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), cytokines and phagocytic activity. Treatment of cells with 50 and 100 μg/mL CvO induced morphological and physiological alterations in the macrophages, such as increased cell surface and phagocytic activity. Additionally, treatment increased the productions of inflammatory cytokines (INF-γ, TNF-α, IL-6) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-17 and IL-10) by macrophages, and significantly decreased ROS levels. In conclusion, these data suggest that, due to molecular diversity, CvO promoted an immunomodulatory effect on macrophages, mediated by an increased production of cytokines, and inhibition of ROS generation and phagocytic activity. Thus, CvO presents potential as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Chicken meat processing generates a substantial number of byproducts, which are either underutilized or improperly disposed. In this study, we employed in silico approaches to identify antioxidant peptides in chicken liver byproducts. Notably, the peptide WYR exhibited remarkable 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 0.13 ± 0.01 mg/mL and demonstrated stability under various conditions, including thermal, pH, NaCl, and simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Molecular docking analysis revealed significant hydrogen bonding interactions, while molecular dynamics showed differential stability with ABTS and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). WYR exhibited improved stress resistance, decreased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), elevated the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and modulated the expression of crucial genes through the insulin/insulin-like growth factor (IIS) signaling pathway, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and heat shock transcription factor-1 (HSF-1) pathways. These effects collectively contributed to the extension of Caenorhabditis elegans' lifespan. This study not only provides an effective method for antioxidant peptide analysis but also highlights the potential for enhancing the utilization of poultry byproducts.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a recurrent chronic colitis disease with increasing incidence and prevalence year by year. The single efficacy and significant side effects of traditional IBD treatment drugs have promoted the flourishing development of new drugs. Inspired by many health benefits of carbon dots (CDs) based nanomedicine in biomedical applications, a metal-free carbon dots (CP-CDs) was synthesized from citric acid and polyethylene polyamine to treat colitis. Oxidative stress tests at the cellular and nematode levels demonstrated CP-CDs have good antioxidant effects, while the toxicity of CP-CDs to cells and nematodes is low. CP-CDs were further applied to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice models, and it was found that CP-CDs can reduce the disease activity index (DAI) score of colon tissue and restore the intestinal barrier. Further, the anti-colitis mechanisms of CP-CDs were explored, one of which is to regulate intestinal oxidative stress in inflammatory mice, further reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines, and thus alleviating colitis. Notably, 16S rRNA sequence analysis showed that the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Ligilactobacillus and Enterorhabdus) in the intestinal tract increased, while that of harmful bacteria (unclassified_Clostridia_UCG_014) decreased after CP-CDs treatment, indicating that CP-CDs rebalancing the gut microbiota destroyed by DSS is another important mechanism. In short, these non-toxic carbon dots not only have the potential for multi-factor combined relief of colitis but also offer an alternative therapy medicine for patients suffering from IBD.

Abstract
During the development of novel, standardized peppermint extracts targeting functional applications, it is critical to adequately characterize raw material plant sources to assure quality and consistency of the end-product. This study aimed to characterize existing and proprietary, newly bred varieties of peppermint and their corresponding aqueous extract products. Taxonomy was confirmed through genetic authenticity assessment. Non-target effect-directed profiling was developed using high-performance thin-layer chromatography-multi-imaging-effect-directed assays (HPTLC-UV/Vis/FLD-EDA). Results demonstrated substantial differences in compounds associated with functional attributes, notably antioxidant potential, between the peppermint samples. Further chemical analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array/mass spectrometry detection (HPLC-PDA/MS) and headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-flame ionization/MS detection (headspace SPME-GC-FID/MS) confirmed compositional differences. A broad variability in the contents of flavonoids and volatiles was observed. The peppermint samples were further screened for their antioxidant potential using the Caenorhabditis elegans model, and the results indicated concordance with observed content differences of the identified functional compounds. These results documented variability among raw materials of peppermint leaves, which can yield highly variable extract products that may result in differing effects on functional targets in vivo. Hence, product standardization via effect-directed profiles is proposed as an appropriate tool.

Abstract
The phytochemical analysis of antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Erodium arborescens aerial part extracts constitute the focus of this research. The chemical composition of an acetone extract was investigated using LC-HESI-MS2, which revealed the presence of 70 compounds. The major identified components were tannin derivatives. Total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents were assessed in plant extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone and methanol). The results showed that the acetone extract exhibited the highest contents of polyphenols and flavonoids, 895.54 and 36.39 mg QE/g DE, respectively. Furthermore, when compared to other extracts, Erodium arborescens acetone extract was endowed with the highest antioxidant activity with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) tests. In addition, the four extracts of Erodium arborescens showed variable degrees of antimicrobial activity against the tested strains, and the interesting activity was obtained with acetone and methanol extracts.

Abstract
Plants produce a diversity of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs), which function as defense chemicals against herbivores and microorganisms but also as signal compounds. An individual plant produces and accumulates mixtures of PSMs with different structural features using different biosynthetic pathways. Almost all PSMs exert one or several biological activities that can be useful for nutrition and health. This review discusses the modes of action of PSMs alone and in combinations. In a mixture, most individual PSMs can modulate different molecular targets; they are thus multitarget drugs. In an extract with many multitarget chemicals, additive and synergistic effects occur. Experiments with the model system Caenorhabditis elegans show that polyphenols and carotenoids can function as powerful antioxidative and longevity-promoting PSMs. PSMs of food plants and spices often exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which can be beneficial for health and the prevention of diseases. Some extracts from food plants and spices with bioactive PSMs have potential for nutraceuticals and antimicrobials.

Abstract
Agave sisalana agro-industrial residue has considerable potential against damage associated with oxidative stress and skin aging. This study aims to demonstrate, in vitro and in vivo, the potential of Agave sisalana agro-industrial residue as a safe and effective alternative for the prevention of damage caused by oxidative stress and aging. The antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro (total antioxidant capacity, reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging, metal chelating (Fe2+ and Cu2+), and hydroxyl radical scavenging) and in vivo using the Caenorhabditis elegans organism model. The extract showed in vitro antioxidant activity in all tests performed. Tests with C. elegans showed that the extract was able to reduce the intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increase the survival rate of worms. A downregulation of gst-4::GFP expression suggests a direct action against free radicals. Agave sisalana agro-industrial residue extract (AsRE) can therefore be considered as a source of antioxidant biomolecules, and the use of this agro-industrial residue in a new production process can lead to sustainability and socioeconomic development.
