Transfer from ciliate to zebrafish: Unveiling mechanisms and combined effects of microplastics and heavy metals

The impacts and toxicological mechanisms of microplastics (MPs) or heavy metals on aquatic ecosystems have been the subject of extensive research and initial understanding. However, the combined toxicity of co-pollutants on organisms and cumulative toxic effects along the food chain are still underexplored. In this study, the ciliate protozoan Paramecium caudatum and zebrafish Danio rerio were used to represent the microbial loop and the higher trophic level, respectively, to illustrate the progressive exposure of MPs and cadmium (Cd2+). The findings indicate that MPs (ca. 1 ×105 items/L) containing with Cd2+ (below 0.1 µg/L) could permeate the bodies of zebrafish through trophic levels after primary ingestion by ciliates. This could cause adverse effects on zebrafish, including alterations in bioindicators (total sugar, triglycerides, lactate, and glycogen) associated with metabolism, delayed hepatic development, disruption of intestinal microbiota, DNA damage, inflammatory responses, and abnormal cellular apoptosis. In addition, the potential risks associated with the transfer of composite pollutants through the microbial loop into traditional food chain were examined, offering novel insights on the evaluation of the ecological risks associated with MPs. As observed, understanding the bioaccumulation and toxic effects of combined pollutants in zebrafish holds crucial implications for food safety and human health.

A probabilistic risk assessment of heavy metal in water and sediment: An industrially affected urban river in Bangladesh

Human welfare and biodiversity are at risk due to the deterioration of water and sediment quality. Particularly, in last few decades, global water and sediment quality degraded due to the rapid industrialization and urbanization. This study aimed to determine the concentration of nine heavy metals and metalloid (Pb, Cr, Cd, Hg, As, Mn, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and assess the ecological risks using different pollution indices (e.g., heavy metal pollution index [HPI], Nemerow pollution index [NI], geo-accumulation index [Igeo], contamination factor [CF], degree of contamination [CD] and pollution load index [PLI], ecological risk index [ERI]) in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, an industrially affected urban river of Bangladesh. For the first time, 20 water and sediment samples were collected across a wider geographical area of the Shitalakshya River during both monsoon and dry seasons and analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer. Average concentrations of heavy metals and metalloid in water were within the Bangladesh standard except for Cr (51.69 ppb) and Mn (228.20 ppb) during monsoon season, portraying potential ecological and human health risks. Besides, average concentration of Mn (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), Ni (549.75 and 370.93 ppb), and Cu (45.34 and 36.09 ppb) in sediment during both seasons were above international standard, implying risk to aquatic sediment biota. The average HPI values indicated moderate to high contamination, whereas the NI values implied polluted water in monsoon season with severe pollution in port area of the river. Similarly, Igeo, CF, CD, and PLI elucidated different levels of contamination in the sediment, particularly during dry season. The ERI values also referred moderate ecological risk in the sediment during dry season. Overall, our findings highlight the alarming level of heavy metal pollution in the Shitalakshya River, necessitating immediate action to protect the aquatic environment, sediment biota, and human health. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This study determined the concentration of heavy metals and metalloid in water and sediment of the Shitalakshya River, Bangladesh. The study revealed that the average concentration of Cr and Mn in water exceeded national standard, whereas Mn, Ni, and Cu in sediment exceeded international limit. Potential ecological risk of heavy metals was also assessed using different pollution indices. Calculated pollution indices indicated different degree of pollution, implying critical ecological condition due to heavy metal pollution in aquatic environment and sediment biota.

Comparative ecotoxicological study on the current status of artisanal crude oil contaminated mangrove swamps in Rivers State, Southern Nigeria

The rise in illegal crude oil theft and refining in the southern Niger Delta region of Nigeria, especially in Rivers State, has led to significant environmental damage to aquatic ecosystems. A study was carried out to assess the impact of crude oil bunkering on aquatic environments and fish samples from Oproama, Sama-Naguakiri, and Abalama over six months. Findings revealed that Oproama had the highest levels of biological oxygen demand (3.60 ± 0.79 mg/L), electrical conductivity (34.07 ± 3.62 μS/cm), total dissolved solids (28.17 ± 3.77 mg/L), and temperature (29.50 ± 0.74 °C). In contrast, Sama-Naguakiri recorded the highest pH (6.72 ± 0.14) and dissolved oxygen (3.35 ± 0.11 mg/L). Though minor variances were noted between Sama-Naguakiri and Abalama, a significant difference (P < 0.05) was observed between these areas and Oproama. Importantly, all measured values adhered to WHO/FAO standards. Analysis of potentially harmful metals in sediment and water indicated notable distinctions among the three sites, with Sama-Naguakiri exhibiting the highest levels of Zn (114.5 ± 1.5 mg/kg), Cu (237.8 ± 0.9 mg/kg), Pb (3.6 ± 1.2 mg/kg), and Cd (1.1 ± 0.4 mg/kg). Conversely, Abalama showed the lowest zinc (105.2 ± 1.5 mg/kg) and lead (2.4 ± 0.5 mg/kg) concentrations, while Oproama displayed the lowest copper level (0.8 ± 0.3 mg/kg). The concentrations of heavy metals in the water, sediment, and fish surpassed the permissible limits established by NESREA, the EPA, and WHO, except for arsenic. The presence of heavy metals in this region could pose significant ecological and health hazards, underscoring the urgency for immediate remedial measures to safeguard the environment and this fish-dependent community.

A new MOF-based modified adsorbent for the efficient removal of Hg(ii) ions from aqueous media: isotherms and kinetics

Herein, a new MOF-based modified adsorbent for the efficient removal of Hg(ii) ions from water media was successfully prepared. Initially, a MOF nanocomposite was synthesized and applied as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of the target heavy metal ion. Following the synthesis, the MOF-based modified adsorbent was identified and characterized by SEM, XRD and FT-IR analytical instruments. The impact of several key variables such as pH of aqueous solution, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial concentration of the analyte of interest on the adsorption efficiency was also investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions established (pH, 3; dose of adsorbent, 0.4 g L-1; contact time, 40 min and the analyte's concentration of 1 mg L-1) the removal efficiency of 96.3% for Hg(ii) was obtained. The results of the studies on the isotherm and kinetics of adsorption revealed that the adsorption process of Hg(ii) matched with the Langmuir isotherm (R2 > 0.990) and the pseudo 2nd-order kinetic models (R2 > 0.998). Additionally, reuse of the applied adsorbent for five consecutive tests exhibited a small percentage of drop (about 8%) in the removal efficiency of the target ion. Finally, the results indicated that the MOF-based modified compound could be potentially applied as a highly efficacious adsorbent for the discharge of Hg(ii) from aquatic media.

Fabrication and Application of Ag@SiO2/Au Core-Shell SERS Composite in Detecting Cu2+ in Water Environment

A sensitive and simple method for detecting Cu2+ in the water source was proposed by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) based on the Ag@SiO2/Au core-shell composite. The Ag@SiO2 SERS tag was synthesized by a simple approach, in which Ag nanoparticles were first embedded with Raman reporter PATP and next coated with a SiO2 shell. The Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles had strong stability even in a high-concentration salty solution, and there were no changes to their properties and appearance within one month. The Ag@SiO2/Au composite was fabricated through a controllable self-assemble process. L-cysteine was decorated on the surface of a functionalized Ag@SiO2/Au composite, as the amino and carboxyl groups of it can form coordinate covalent bond with Cu2+, which shows that the Ag@SiO2/Au composite labelled with L-cysteine has excellent performance for the detection of Cu2+ in aqueous media. In this study, the SERS detection of Cu2+ was carried out using Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles, and the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 0.1 mg/L was achieved.

Copper exposure causes alteration in the intestinal microbiota and metabolites in Takifugu rubripes

Copper is an environmental pollutant, and copper in aquatic environments mainly comes from soil and water. It enters the environment through atmospheric deposition, sewage discharge, and industrial production, and enters aquatic organisms, causing toxicity. Takifugu rubripes (T. rubripes) is a marine fish with high economic value. Due to the toxic effects of heavy metals on aquatic organisms such as fish, it can affect the gut community and metabolites of fish. The gut is an important channel for fish to communicate with the outside world and a necessary pathway for the metabolism of nutrients and toxic substances in the fish body. Studies have shown that due to changes in global water emissions and the high sensitivity of aquatic organisms to the environment, copper may pose greater potential hazards to aquatic organisms. Copper poses a greater risk to aquatic species than other heavy metals and metal/metal like pollutants (such as cadmium, lead, mercury, arsenic, etc.) . In order to elucidate the effects of copper exposure on the gut of T. rubripes. In this study, we exposed T. rubripes to 0, 50, 100, or 500 μg/L of copper for three days, the effects of copper exposure on the gut microbiota structure and metabolites of the T. rubripes were investigated using 16 S rRNA gene and metabolomics techniques. The research results indicate that with the increase copper concentration, the intestinal tissue of T. rubripes undergoes significant damage. 16 S rRNA sequencing results show that copper exposure alters the structure and metabolites of intestinal microbiota. Copper exposure of 100 and 500 μg/L inhibited the colonization of the bacterial gut, disrupted the intestinal barrier, and made the fish susceptible to the pathogens. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that copper regulated the production of metabolites such as L-histidine, arachidonic acid, and L-glutamic acid, which are related to energy and immunity. Microbiome-metabolome correlation analysis showed that Subdoligranulum, Family_XIII_AD3011_group, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 were the key bacteria for copper ion intervention, and they might up-regulate the levels of metabolites such as indole-3-acetic acid, 3-indoleacrylic acid, and 5-hydroxyindole in the tryptophan metabolism pathway. In summary, our research has demonstrated that copper exposure can cause pathological changes in the intestinal tissue of the T. rubripes. High concentrations of copper ions can affect the colonization of the T. rubripes microbiota in the intestine, damage the fish's immune system, and alter the structure and metabolites of the intestinal microbiota, this can lead to intestinal metabolic dysfunction. providing a reference for the evaluation of the biological toxicity effects of heavy metal elements in the marine environment. This study provides a reference for evaluating the biological toxicity effects of heavy metal elements in marine environments.

BcaSOD1 enhances cadmium tolerance in transgenic Arabidopsis by regulating the expression of genes related to heavy metal detoxification and arginine synthesis

Cadmium (Cd), which is a nonessential heavy metal element for organisms, can have a severe impact on the growth and development of organisms that absorb excessive Cd. Studies have shown that Brassica carinata, a semiwild oil crop, has strong tolerance to various abiotic stresses, and RNA-seq has revealed that the B. carinata superoxide dismutase gene (BcaSOD1) likely responds to Cd stress. To elucidate the BcaSOD1 function involved in tolerance of Cd stress, we cloned the coding sequences of BcaSOD1 from a purple B. carinata accession and successfully transferred it into Arabidopsis thaliana. The subcellular localization results demonstrated that BcaSOD1 was primarily located in the plasma membrane, mitochondria and nucleus. Overexpression of BcaSOD1 in transgenic Arabidopsis (OE) effectively decreased the toxicity caused by Cd stress. Compared to the WT (wild type lines), the OE lines exhibited significantly increased activities of antioxidant enzymes (APX, CAT, POD, and SOD) after exposure to 2.5 mM CdCl2. The Cd content of underground (root) in the OE line was dominantly higher than that in the WT; however, the Cd content of aboveground (shoot) was comparable between the OE and WT types. Moreover, the qRT‒PCR results showed that several heavy metal detoxification-related genes (AtIREG2, AtMTP3, AtHMA3, and AtNAS4) were significantly upregulated in the roots of OE lines under Cd treatment, suggesting that these genes are likely involved in Cd absorption in the roots of OE lines. In addition, both comparable transcriptome and qRT-PCR analyses revealed that exogenous BcaSOD1 noticeably facilitates detoxification by stimulating the expression of two arginine (Arg) biosynthesis genes (AtGDH1 and AtGDH2) while inhibiting the expression of AtARGAH1, a negative regulator in biosynthesis of Arg. The Arg content was subsequently confirmed to be significantly enhanced in OE lines under Cd treatment, indicating that BcaSOD1 likely strengthened Cd tolerance by regulating the expression of Arg-related genes. This study demonstrates that BcaSOD1 can enhance Cd tolerance and reveals the molecular mechanism of this gene, providing valuable insights into the molecular mechanism of Cd tolerance in plants.

Biomass waste-derived carbon materials for sustainable remediation of polluted environment: A comprehensive review

In response to the growing global concern over environmental pollution, the exploration of sustainable and eco-friendly materials derived from biomass waste has gained significant traction. This comprehensive review seeks to provide a holistic perspective on the utilization of biomass waste as a renewable carbon source, offering insights into the production of environmentally benign and cost-effective carbon-based materials. These materials, including biochar, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have shown immense promise in the remediation of polluted soils, industrial wastewater, and contaminated groundwater. The review commences by elucidating the intricate processes involved in the synthesis and functionalization of biomass-derived carbon materials, emphasizing their scalability and economic viability. With their distinctive structural attributes, such as high surface areas, porous architectures, and tunable surface functionalities, these materials emerge as versatile tools in addressing environmental challenges. One of the central themes explored in this review is the pivotal role that carbon materials play in adsorption processes, which represent a green and sustainable technology for the removal of a diverse array of pollutants. These encompass noxious organic compounds, heavy metals, and organic matter, encompassing pollutants found in soils, groundwater, and industrial wastewater. The discussion extends to the underlying mechanisms governing adsorption, shedding light on the efficacy and selectivity of carbon-based materials in different environmental contexts. Furthermore, this review delves into multifaceted considerations, spanning the spectrum from biomass and biowaste resources to the properties and applications of carbon materials. This holistic approach aims to equip researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the synergistic utilization of these materials, ultimately facilitating effective and affordable strategies for combatting industrial wastewater pollution, soil contamination, and groundwater impurities.

Heavy metals contamination of seafood from the crude oil-impacted Niger Delta Region of Nigeria: A systematic review and meta-analysis

This study aims at computing the pooled mean estimate (PME) and health risks of heavy metals in seafood obtained from the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria (NDRN), using data from existing literatures. Pubmed, Scopus and Google Scholar were searched to retrieve articles that investigated the heavy metal contents of edible seafood from the NDRN. Search hits were screened against predetermined criteria following which relevant data were extracted from eligible articles. The PME for each metal was computed by performing a maximum likelihood random effect model meta-analysis using the R Studio Software. Outcome from the meta-analysis involving 58 studies and a total of 2983 seafood samples revealed the following PMEs (mg/kg dry wt seafood) for the investigated heavy metals: As (0.777), Cd (0.985), Co (4.039), Cr (2.26), Cu (11.45), Fe (143.39), Hg (0.0058), Mn (13.56), Ni (5.26), Pb (4.35), and Zn (29.32). The health risk assessment suggests that seafood from this region poses considerable carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to human consumers. Our finding calls for urgent actions aimed at identifying and eliminating point sources of heavy metals pollution of the NDRN marine environment. Inhabitants of NDRN are encouraged to reduce seafood consumption while diversifying their protein sources to include non-seafood options.

A comprehensive health risk assessment associated with bioaccumulation of heavy metals and nutrients in selected macrophytes of Loktak Lake, Manipur, India

The Loktak Lake, a Ramsar site in Northeast India, is known for its rich biodiversity that includes a variety of macrophyte species, most of which have not been studied for their phytoremediation capacities and potential toxicity via consumption of the edible species. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment was conducted to evaluate the accumulation of selected heavy metals and nutrients in 10 dominant macrophyte species growing in Loktak Lake and to assess the potential health risks associated with consumption of the edible plants. The concentrations of nutrients such as total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and heavy metals such as copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) were found to be in the order of plant > sediment > water. The bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) revealed high efficiency of most plants to accumulate heavy metals and nutrients in their tissues from the lake water and sediments, indicating their potential to be used as phytoremediators. Translocation factors (TFs) were also estimated to determine the efficiency of the plants to translocate elements from root to shoot. Colocasia esculenta and Polygonum perfoliatum exhibited the highest BAF values, whereas Colocasia esculenta, Hedychium flavum, Phragmites karka, and Oenanthe javanica exhibited the highest TF values for most elements. Target hazard quotients (THQs) revealed potential health risks associated with one or more heavy metals in the plants, except for Zn, whose THQ values were below the level of concern in all the edible plant species. The hazard index (HI) signifying potential non-carcinogenic health risk from the combined effects of all the heavy metals was highest for Polygonum perfoliatum, indicating a potentially higher risk to health if this edible macrophyte is regularly consumed in higher quantities and may pose long-term health effects to the exposed population.

Green synthesis of fluorescent carbon dots from Robinia hispida L. leaves for selective detection of Hg (II)

In this study, Robinia hispida L leaves (RH) was used as a precursor for the first time to synthesize fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with stable blue fluorescence by a single-step hydrothermal synthesis method. Notably, the innovative approach eliminates the necessity for toxic chemicals or hazardous substances, marking a significant advancement in the field. The synthesized CDs demonstrate CDs demonstrates the predominance of spherical shapes with an average size of 11.63 ± 1.92 nm. The CDs not only exhibit an enhanced fluorescent efficiency with a relatively high quantum yield of up to 6.8%, but they also possess the potential for direct utilization in the selective determination of Hg(II) through fluorescence quenching, even without any functionalization. Under the optimized conditions at a pH of 7.0, a robust linear correlation was found to exist between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of Hg (II) within the range of 5-17.5μM, exhibiting a detection limit (3σ) of 1.5μM. Additionally, this methodology was effectively employed to successfully detect Hg (II) ions in various aqueous samples, including tap water, spring water, drinking water, and a certified reference material (CRM-SA-C Sandy Soil C). The spike recoveries of 97.6%-101.6% with less than 2.7% variability were performed on all samples.

Internal Defense System of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819): Ecological Role of Hemocytes as Biomarkers for Thiacloprid and Benzo[a]Pyrene Pollution

The introduction of pollutants, such as thiacloprid and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), into the waters of urbanized coastal and estuarine areas through fossil fuel spills, domestic and industrial waste discharges, atmospheric inputs, and continental runoff poses a major threat to the fauna and flora of the aquatic environment and can have a significant impact on the internal defense system of invertebrates such as mussels. Using monoclonal and polyclonal anti-Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and anti-inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) antibodies for the first time, this work aims to examine hemocytes in the mantle and gills of M. galloprovincialis as biomarkers of thiacloprid and B[a]P pollution and analyze their potential synergistic effect. To pursue this objective, samples were exposed to the pollutants, both individually and simultaneously. Subsequently, oxidative stress biomarkers were evaluated by enzymatic analysis, while tissue changes and the number of hemocytes in the different contaminated groups were assessed via histomorphological and immunohistochemical analyses. Our findings revealed that in comparison to a single exposure, the two pollutants together significantly elevated oxidative stress. Moreover, our data may potentially enhance knowledge on how TLR2 and iNOS work as part of the internal defense system of bivalves. This would help in creating new technologies and strategies, such as biosensors, that are more suitable for managing water pollution, and garnering new details on the condition of the marine ecosystem.

Ecological risk assessment of aquatic organisms induced by heavy metals in the estuarine waters of the Pearl River

With the rapid economic development of China's coastal areas and the growth of industry and population, the problem of heavy metal contamination in estuarine waters is increasing in sensitivity and seriousness. In order to accurately and quantitatively describe the current status of heavy metal contamination and identify sensitive aquatic organisms with high ecological risks, five heavy metals in eight estuaries of the Pearl River were monitored at monthly intervals from January to December in 2020, and the ecological risks of aquatic organisms induced by heavy metals were evaluated using Risk quotients (RQ) and species sensitivity distributions (SSD) methods. The results showed that the concentrations of As, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn in estuaries of the Pearl River were (0.65-9.25) μg/L, (0.07-11.57) μg/L, (0.05-9.09) μg/L, (< 0.40) μg/L and (0.67-86.12) μg/L, respectively. With the exception of Hg in Jiaomen water, the other heavy metals in each sampling site met or exceed the water quality standard of Grade II. The aquatic ecological risks of As, Pb and Hg were generally low in the waters of the Pearl River estuary, but individual aquatic organisms are subject to elevated ecological risks due to Cu and Zn. The content of Zn has a lethal effect on the crustaceans Temora Stylifera, and the content of Cu has a serious impact on the mollusks Corbicula Fluminea and has a certain impact on the crustaceans Corophium sp. and the fish Sparus aurata. Heavy metal levels and joint ecological risks (msPAF) in the Humen, Jiaomen, Hongqimen, and Hengmen estuaries were slightly higher than in other estuaries, and the Yamen estuary had the lowest contration of heavy metals and ecological risk. Research findings can serve as a basis for formulating water quality standards for heavy metals and for protecting aquatic biodiversity in the Pearl River Estuary.

Heavy metal tolerance in microalgae: Detoxification mechanisms and applications

The proficiency of microalgae to resist heavy metals has potential to be beneficial in resolving various environmental challenges. Global situations such as the need for cost-effective and ecological ways of remediation of contaminated water and for the development of bioenergy sources could employ microalgae. In a medium with the presence of heavy metals, microalgae utilize different mechanisms to uptake the metal and further detoxify it. Biosorption and the next process of bioaccumulation are two such major steps and they also include the assistance of different transporters at different stages of heavy metal tolerance. This capability has also proved to be efficient in eradicating many heavy metals like Chromium, Copper, Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, Nickel and Cadmium from the environment they are present in. This indicates the possibility of the application of microalgae as a biological way of remediating contaminated water. Heavy metal resistance quality also allows various microalgal species to contribute in the generation of biofuels like biodiesel and biohydrogen. Many research works have also explored the capacity of microalgae in nanotechnology for the formation of nanoparticles due to its relevant characteristics. Various studies have also revealed that biochar deduced from microalgae or a combination of biochar and microalgae can have wide applications specially in deprivation of heavy metals from an environment. This review focuses on the strategies adopted by microalgae, various transporters involved in the process of tolerating heavy metals and the applications where microalgae can participate owing to its ability to resist metals.

Zn and Co ferrite nanoparticles: towards the applications of sensing and adsorption studies

An important deliberation of this current work is the impending applications of bivalent transition metals doped with nano ferrites and to study their emerging properties of magnetically active ferrites, which constitute oxides of iron (different conformers most demanding γ-Fe₂O₃) and transition metal complexes of bivalent metal oxides like cobalt (Co(II)) and magnesium (Mg(II)). Fe³⁺ ions occupy tetrahedral sites; the rest of Fe³⁺ and the Co²⁺ ions occupy octahedral sites. For the synthesis, a self-propagating method of combustion at lower temperature was used. Zinc and cobalt nano ferrites are synthesized from the chemical coprecipitation method of 20 to 90 nm in average size, characterized thoroughly employing FTIR and PXRD and surface morphology studied using SEM. These results explain the existence of ferrite nanoparticles in cubic spinel. Magnetically active metal oxide nanoparticles are now commonly employed in main studies of sensing, absorption, and other properties. All studies showed the interesting results.

Leaching characteristics and potential risk of heavy metals from drip irrigation pipes and mulch substrate in agricultural ecosystems

Drip irrigation is a valuable method for optimising water and fertiliser usage, motivating its increasing use. However, the ecological effects of drip irrigation fertilisation have not been sufficiently evaluated, limiting its effective and widespread use. Within this context, we aimed to determine the effects and potential ecological risks of using polyethylene irrigation pipes and mulch substrate under various drip irrigation conditions as well as burning of waste pipes and mulch substrate. Laboratory simulations of field conditions were used to determine the distribution, leaching, and migration pattern of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) from plastic drip irrigation pipes and agricultural mulch substrate into various solutions. Maize samples obtained from drip-irrigated fields were analysed to determine the presence of heavy metal residues and assess the risk of heavy metal contamination. Heavy metal leaching from pipes and mulch substrate was high under acidic conditions, while the migration of heavy metals from plastic products was low in alkaline water-soluble fertiliser solutions. After combustion, heavy metal leaching from pipes and mulch residues increased considerably, with the migration capacity of Cd, Cr, and Cu increasing by >10-fold. Heavy metals in plastic pipes migrated primarily to the residue (bottom ash), whereas those from mulch substrate migrated to the fly ash component. Under experimental conditions, the migration of heavy metals from plastic pipes and mulch substrate had a negligible effect on the heavy metal content in aqueous environments. Although heavy metal leaching increased, the effect on water quality under actual irrigation conditions was relatively minor (in the order of 10^-9). Thus, the use of plastic irrigation pipes and mulch substrate did not result in significant heavy metal contamination and potential risk to the agriculture ecosystem. Our study findings provide evidence for the effective application and widespread promotion of drip irrigation and fertiliser technology.

Oxidative Stress of Cadmium and Lead at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations on Hepatopancreas of Macrobrachium nipponensis and Their Mixture Interactivity: Implications for Water Quality Criteria Amendment

The biotoxicity of heavy metals in water has always been the focus of ecological health research. In this study, the oxidative stress-associated toxicity of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) at environmentally relevant concentrations on the hepatopancreas of Macrobrachium nipponensis was investigated based on multiple biomarker responses in a 28-day indoor exposure study. Changes in integrated biomarker responses (IBR) and their interactivity were subsequently analyzed. No dead individuals were found across any of the tested conditions. The chronic toxicity of heavy metals depended on their type and exposure time at the same concentration. At low concentrations, organisms have a regulatory capacity to cope with the excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by Pb stress over time. In detail, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was inhibited by Pb stress at a high concentration as time passed. The sensitivity of metallothionein (MT) to Cd was stronger than Pb, and the potential for Cd to cause lipid peroxidation damage was higher than Pb. At the same time, Pb had a greater disturbance effect on the nervous system than Cd, especially in the early exposure stage. The contribution of Cd and Pb to the interaction effect varied dynamically with time and concentration of exposure, but mostly showed antagonism. The results of this study have important significance for guiding the diagnosis of ecological water health, the amendment of water quality criteria, and the management of wastewater discharge.

Hemocytes: A Useful Tool for Assessing the Toxicity of Microplastics, Heavy Metals, and Pesticides on Aquatic Invertebrates

Invertebrates have long been an important tool for assessing water pollution due to their characteristics as intermediate consumers in aquatic ecosystem food chains. Most of the time, the effects of contaminants are measured by their effect on oxidative status or by mortality, although there already exists an easier tool-hemocytes. Hemocytes are circulating cells with a very important role in the immune system of invertebrates, which can be found within the hemolymph, analogous to the blood in vertebrates. The collection of hemolymph samples is easy, fast, minimally invasive, and poses no danger to the life of invertebrates. The purpose of this review was to highlight the advantages of using hemolymph for toxicity assays of various substances, including heavy metals, micro- and nano-plastics, pesticides, hydrocarbons, and oil spills. A literature search was conducted for this purpose using the most common and most often used databases, with a focus on the most recent and relevant studies. Bivalve mollusks, crustaceans, and gastropods were chosen for this investigation. This review found a growing number of studies choosing to use hemolymph as the standard methodology for toxicology assays, confirming their qualities as reliable tools.

Copper sulfate induced toxicological impact on in-vivo zebrafish larval model protected due to acacetin via anti-inflammatory and glutathione redox mechanism

Copper sulfate (CuSO₄) as industrial effluent is intentionally or unintentionally released into water bodies and accumulates in the fish. Because of its numerous applications, CuSO₄ can be hazardous to non-target creatures, producing direct alterations in fish habitats. Acacetin is a flavonoid present in all vascular plants that are extensively dispersed in plant pigments and responsible for many natural hues. However, the impact of acacetin on mitigating the toxic effect of CuSO₄ in the in-vivo conditions is not known. The toxicity of acacetin was determined by measuring the survival, deformities and heart rate after treatment with various concentrations to larvae. The protective effect of acacetin was also observed in CuSO₄ exposed zebrafish larvae by reducing malformation, mortality rate and oxidative stress. Meanwhile, the acacetin-protected larvae from CuSO₄ effects through the molecular mechanism by suppressing pro-inflammatory genes (COX-2, TNF-α and IL-1) and upregulating antioxidant genes (GPx, GST and GR). Overall, our findings suggest that acacetin can act as a protective barrier against CuSO₄-induced inflammation in an in-vivo zebrafish larval model.

Characterization and Toxicity Analysis of Lab-Created Respirable Coal Mine Dust from the Appalachians and Rocky Mountains Regions

Coal mine workers are continuously exposed to respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) in workplaces, causing severe lung diseases. RCMD characteristics and their relations with dust toxicity need further research to understand the adverse exposure effects to RCMD. The geographic clustering of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) suggests that RCMD in the Appalachian region may exhibit more toxicity than other geographic regions such as the Rocky Mountains. This study investigates the RCMD characteristics and toxicity based on geographic location. Dissolution experiments in simulated lung fluids (SLFs) and in vitro responses were conducted to determine the toxicity level of samples collected from five mines in the Rocky Mountains and Appalachian regions. Dust characteristics were investigated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, the BET method, total microwave digestion, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was conducted to determine the concentration of metals dissolved in the SLFs. Finer particle sizes and higher mineral and elemental contents were found in samples from the Appalachian regions. Si, Al, Fe, Cu, Sr, and Pb were found in dissolution experiments, but no trends were found indicating higher dissolutions in the Appalachian region. In vitro studies indicated a proinflammatory response in epithelial and macrophage cells, suggesting their possible participation in pneumoconiosis and lung diseases development.

Exposure to Toxic Metals and Health Risk Assessment through Ingestion of Canned Sardines Sold in Brazil

The presence of heavy metals in the environment is increasing, which can be a danger to public health. Fish exposed to contaminated environments tend to have higher concentrations of some metals in their tissues. Monitoring these elements remains urgent as it is a matter of global concern. Canned sardines from the Brazilian market were analyzed for elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn) of metals and metalloids, including some toxic, using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP OES) in two types of sardines (preserved in oil and tomato sauce) from five different brands. The results were compared to limit levels for consumption set by FAO/WHO. Moreover, we assessed the associated risk regarding the elemental intake of these elements through the samples, using the hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic risk (CR). All samples had unfavorable HQ and HI, primarily due to arsenic content. In the same manner, CR for arsenic was above the proposed limit of 10⁻⁴, and cadmium and chromium, which were within the acceptable limit (10⁻⁶ to 10⁻⁴), require attention. These results show that chronic consumption of canned sardines sold in Brazil is unsafe, and quality surveillance is needed to ensure there is no risk to the population that ingests these products.

A Comprehensive Review on Water Quality Monitoring Devices: Materials Advances, Current Status, and Future Perspective

Water quality monitoring has become more critical in recent years to ensure the availability of clean and safe water from natural aquifers and to understand the evolution of water contaminants across time and space. The conventional water monitoring techniques comprise of sample collection, preservation, preparation, tailed by laboratory testing and analysis with cumbersome wet chemical routes and expensive instrumentation. Despite the high accuracy of these methods, the high testing costs, laborious procedures, and maintenance associated with them don't make them lucrative for end end-users and field testing. As the participation of ultimate stakeholders, that is, common man for water quality and quantity can play a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainability of our aquifers, thus it is essential to develop and deploy portable and user-friendly technical systems for monitoring water sources in real-time or on-site. The present review emphasizes here on possible approaches including optical (absorbance, fluorescence, colorimetric, X-ray fluorescence, chemiluminescence), electrochemical (ASV, CSV, CV, EIS, and chronoamperometry), electrical, biological, and surface-sensing (SPR and SERS), as candidates for developing such platforms. The existing developments, their success, and bottlenecks are discussed in terms of various attributes of water to escalate the essentiality of water quality devices development meeting ASSURED criterion for societal usage. These platforms are also analyzed in terms of their market potential, advancements required from material science aspects, and possible integration with IoT solutions in alignment with Industry 4.0 for environmental application.

Nickel-mediated lead dynamics and their interactive effect on lead partitioning and phytoremediation indices in spinach

A greenhouse research was conducted to monitor lead (Pb) translocation dynamics in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) mediated by nickel (Ni) application. Each of the four levels of Pb (0, 100, 150, and 300 mg/kg) and Ni (0, 100, 150, and 300 mg/kg) was applied in different combinations in the pot experiment. A fully matured spinach crop was harvested and divided into biomass samples from the roots and above ground. ICP-OES was used to determine the concentrations of Pb and Ni in the samples. The increase in Pb application rate in soil resulted in a decrease in dry matter yield of plant roots and above-ground biomass, according to the findings. Pb accumulation was also found in significant amounts in roots and above-ground biomass. Pb was accumulated in greater quantities in the spinach roots than in the above-ground biomass. Pb uptake in spinach roots and above-ground biomass decreased when high dose of Ni was applied. The Ni application in spinach crop had a negative impact on various parameters of Pb uptake, including translocation factor, bioconcentration factor, translocation efficiency, and crop removal of Pb. Pb toxicity was reduced when higher doses of Ni (100 to 300 mg/kg) were applied to Pb-contaminated soil. The findings of this study could help researchers better understand how Pb and Ni interact, as well as how to treat soil that has been contaminated by industrial wastewater containing nickel and lead.

Investigating fish contamination scenario and community willingness to adopt consumption advice proposing an advisory option

Consumption advice to ensure the health and safety of fish consumers remains urgent to handle the ever-increasing panic over heavy metal toxicity. Moreover, studies of fish consumption rarely focus on the perceptions and awareness of consumers. Considering this, the present study examines the factors determining the willingness to follow fish consumption advice as well as calculate the risk-benefit ratio and produce the vulnerability map followed by formulating fish consumption advice for consumers of two commercially important fish species, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and mudfish (Ophiocephalus striatus), in the Laguna de Bay area of the Philippines. Primary data on consumers' perceptions were collected through a questionnaire, whereas heavy metal contamination data were compiled from the best available literature. We concluded that people's willingness to adopt consumption advice is mostly dependent on their existing level of fish consumption (P = 0.000). There was no discernible difference in the mean concentration of heavy metals in fish between the dry and wet seasons, with the exception of As concentrations in the samples (t15.75 = 3.72, p < 0.001). The hazard quotient (risk-benefit ratio) for fish consumption (HQefa) was an order of magnitude higher in the mudfish samples (0.05 and 28.28) compared to tilapia (0.04 to 16.02). Binangonan and Taguig from the Northern West Bay (1A, 1B) were clearly recognised on the vulnerability map as the most vulnerable regions in the lake. In general, it was determined that As and Pb were the elements causing consumption restrictions on tilapia collected from various parts of Laguna Lake. As with tilapia, locations with a high-risk advisory for mudfish were identified as the Northern West Bay and Central Bay, with a consumption limit of five meals per month due to excessive mercury pollution. This empirical study can serve as an option for the future development of fish consumption advice in the region.

Heavy metal removal by biomass-derived carbon nanotubes as a greener environmental remediation: A comprehensive review

The concentrations of heavy metal ions found in waterways near industrial zones are often exceed the prescribed limits, posing a continued danger to the environment and public health. Therefore, greater attention has been devoted into finding the efficient solutions for adsorbing heavy metal ions. This review paper focuses on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from biomass and their application in the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Techniques to produce CNTs, benefits of modification with various functional groups to enhance sorption uptake, effects of operating parameters, and adsorption mechanisms are reviewed. Adsorption occurs via physical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, surface complexation, and interaction between functional groups and heavy metal ions. Moreover, factors such as pH level, CNTs dosage, duration, temperature, ionic strength, and surface property of adsorbents have been identified as the common factors influencing the adsorption of heavy metals. The oxygenated functional groups initially present on the surface of the modified CNTs are responsible towards the adsorption enhancement of commonly-encountered heavy metals such as Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺. Despite the recent advances in the application of CNTs in environmental clean-up and pollution treatment have been demonstrated, major obstacles of CNTs such as high synthesis cost, the agglomeration in the post-treated solutions and the secondary pollution from chemicals in the surface modification, should be critically addressed in the future studies for successful large-scale applications of CNTs.

Adsorption of Chromium (VI) by Cu (I)-MOF in Water: Optimization, Kinetics, and Thermodynamics

To investigate the adsorption behavior of Cu (I)-MOF material for chromium (VI) in water, the parameters of influencing adsorption were optimized and found as follows: the optimal pH was 6 for the adsorption of Cr (VI) by the Cu (I)-MOF, the optimal amount of adsorbent was 0.45 g·L−1, and the adsorption saturation time was within 180 min. Subsequently, the kinetics results were fitted by four models such as pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion models. Among them, the adsorption of chromium (VI) was more inclined to the pseudo-first-order model (Radj2 = 0.9230). Then, the isotherm data were fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The results indicated that Langmuir isotherm was the excellent match model (Radj2 = 0.9827). It belongs to a monolayer adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 95.92 mg·g−1. Subsequently, the thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption were calculated as follows: enthalpy change (ΔHθ) was −8.583 kJ·mol−1, entropy change (ΔSθ) was −8.243 J·mol−1 K−1, and the Gibbs function change (ΔGθ) was less than zero in the temperature range of 288–328 K, indicating that the reaction was spontaneous. Finally, both the spectra of infrared and XPS supported the adsorption mechanism that belonged the ion exchange. The spectra of XRD and SEM images shown that the structure of Cu (I)-MOF remained stable for at least 3 cycles. In conclusion, Cu (I)-MOF material has a high adsorption capacity, good water stability, low cost, and easy to prepare in large quantities in practical application. It will be a promising adsorbent for the removal of Cr (VI) from water.

Ecological and health risk assessments and water quality criteria of heavy metals in the Haihe River

Heavy metal pollution is an issue of wide concern owing to the toxic and bioaccumulative properties of many heavy metals and their tendencies to persist in the environment. The Haihe River is an important river in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and heavy metal pollution of the basin has attracted considerable attention. This study determined the concentrations of 14 heavy metals (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, and Zn) in water, sediments, and fish samples from the Haihe River basin. The results showed that the concentrations ranged from 0.08 μg L^-1 to 60.49 μg L^-1 in water, 0.11 mg kg^-1 to 229.20 mg kg^-1 in sediments, and 0.01 mg kg^-1 to 11.72 mg kg^-1 in fish. We derived the ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) value of each heavy metal with respect to human health, and then performed a comprehensive risk assessment according to the native parameters. The human health AWQC values for the assessed 14 heavy metals ranged from 0.16 μg L^-1 to 726.53 μg L^-1. The health risks posed by As, Cr, Hg, and Sb and the ecological risks associated with Ni, Cu, Cr, Zn, Cd, Co, Hg, and Sn were found to be issues of concern. The results of a sensitivity analysis revealed that the highest contributing parameter was i) the concentration in water (Cw) for Cd, Co, Mn, Sb, and Sn; ii) the intake rate of water (IR_w) for As, Ba, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Se; and iii) the concentration in fish (C_f) for Cu and Zn. The results of this research could contribute to the information required for water quality assessments and the development of water quality standards.

Evaluation of Contamination Status and Health Risk Assessment of Essential and Toxic Metals in Cyprinus carpio from Mangla Lake, Pakistan

Although fish as a diet has many health benefits, metal accumulation in fish has been an increasing public health concerns across the world. The Cyprinus carpio samples were collected from Mangla Lake, Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, and analyzed for 18 essential and toxic trace metals. In edible muscles of the fish, average concentration (μg/g) of K (3002) was the highest, followed by Na (648), Ca (435), Mg (227), and Zn (161). Relatively lower levels (μg/g) were noted for Fe (16.9), Pb (6.05), Sr (4.01), Se (3.49), Co (2.90), Ni (2.37), Mn (2.29), As (1.48), and Cu (1.37), while least levels (μg/g) were found for Cr (0.61), Cd (0.52), Hg (0.15), and Li (0.09) in muscles. Majority of the metals revealed higher accumulation in gills compared with those in scales and muscles. Mean levels of Zn, Mn, Co, Pb, As, and Cd in Cyprinus carpio muscles were found to be exceeding most of the international permissible limits in muscles for safe human consumption. Estimated daily/weekly intakes and hazard quotients/index suggested a high risk related to the intake of Cyprinus carpio from Mangla Lake due to heavy metal contamination. Likewise, target cancer risk (TCR) also indicated significant lifetime carcinogenic health risks to the consumers.

An Old Technique with A Promising Future: Recent Advances in the Use of Electrodeposition for Metal Recovery

Although the first published works on electrodeposition dates from more than one century ago (1905), the uses of this technique in the recovery of metals are attracting an increasing interest from the scientific community in the recent years. Moreover, the intense use of metals in electronics and the necessity to assure a second life of these devices in a context of circular economy, have increased the interest of the scientific community on electrodeposition, with almost 3000 works published per year nowadays. In this review, we aim to revise the most relevant and recent publications in the application of electrodeposition for metal recovery. These contributions have been classified into four main groups of approaches: (1) treatment and reuse of wastewater; (2) use of ionic liquids; (3) use of bio-electrochemical processes (microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells) and (4) integration of electrodeposition with other processes (bioleaching, adsorption, membrane processes, etc.). This would increase the awareness about the importance of the technology and would serve as a starting point for anyone that aims to start working in the field.

Metal and metal(loids) removal efficiency using genetically engineered microbes: Applications and challenges

The environment is being polluted in different many with metal and metalloid pollution, mostly due to anthropogenic activity, which is directly affecting human and environmental health. Metals and metalloids are highly toxic at low concentrations and contribute primarily to the survival equilibrium of activities in the environment. However, because of non-degradable, they persist in nature and these metal and metalloids bioaccumulate in the food chain. Genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) mediated techniques for the removal of metals and metalloids are considered an environmentally safe and economically feasible strategy. Various forms of GEMs, including fungi, algae, and bacteria have been produced by recombinant DNA and RNA technologies, which have been used to eliminate metal and metalloids compounds from the polluted areas. Besides, GEMs have the potentiality to produce enzymes and other metabolites that are capable of tolerating metals stress and detoxify the pollutants. Thus, the aim of this review is to discuss the use of GEMs as advanced tools to produce metabolites, signaling molecules, proteins through genetic expression during metal and metalloids interaction, which help in the breakdown of persistent pollutants in the environment.

A Short Review on Recent Advances of Hydrogel-Based Adsorbents for Heavy Metal Ions

The growth of industry fulfills our necessity and promotes economic development. However, pollutants from such industries pollute water bodies which pose a high risk for living organisms. Thus, researchers have been urged to develop an efficient method to remove toxic heavy metal ions from water bodies. The adsorption method shows promising results for the removal of heavy metal ions and is easy to operate on a large scale, thus can be applied to practical applications. Numerous adsorbents were developed and reported, among them hydrogels, which attract great attention because of the reusability, ease of preparation, and handling. Hydrogels are generally prepared by the cross-linking of polymers that result in a three-dimensional structure, showing high porosity and high functionality. They are hydrophilic in nature because of the functional groups, and are non-toxic. Thus, this review provides various methods of hydrogel adsorbents preparation and summarizes recent progress in the use of hydrogel adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions. Further, the mechanism involved in the removal of heavy metal ions is briefly discussed. The most recent studies about the adsorption method for the treatment of heavy metal ions contaminated water are presented.

Environmental fate of cigarette butts and their toxicity in aquatic organisms: A comprehensive systematic review

Cigarette butts (CBs) are the most frequently littered pieces of environmental wastes which are released both directly and indirectly into the environment and finally may reach aquatic environments and contaminate aquatic biomes. However, to date, there is no comprehensive review on the extent and magnitude of the potential effects of CBs on aquatic organisms. Hence, a systematic review of published studies was conducted in this paper to survey the fate of CBs in the aquatic environments and also the impacts of exposure to CBs on survival, growth, and reproduction of aquatic organisms. The gathered data showed that the leachates of CBs in the aquatic environment could extremely be toxic for various organisms and increasing the exposure time, increases the mortality rate. In addition, smoked filtered CBs with tobacco remnants have higher mortality rate compared to unsmoked filtered butts (USFs) for Hymenochirus curtipes, Clarias gariepinus, tidepool snails, Atherinops affinis and Pimephales promelas. The fate of CBs in the aquatic environments is affected by various factors, and prior to sinking they are floated for a long time (long distance). Hence, CBs and their associated toxic chemicals might be ingested by diverse aquatic organisms. However, further studies are necessary to understand the exact toxicity of CBs on different freshwater and marine organisms and also their fate in the aquatic media. The results of this review showed the essentiality of regulations to prevent the release of chemical and toxic compounds into the aquatic environments.

Molecularly imprinted polymer-based electrochemical sensors for environmental analysis

The ever-increasing presence of contaminants in environmental waters is an alarming issue, not only because of their harmful effects in the environment but also because of their risk to human health. Pharmaceuticals and pesticides, among other compounds of daily use, such as personal care products or plasticisers, are being released into water bodies. This release mainly occurs through wastewater since the treatments applied in many wastewater treatment plants are not able to completely remove these substances. Therefore, the analysis of these contaminants is essential but this is difficult due to the great variety of contaminating substances. Facing this analytical challenge, electrochemical sensing based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) has become an interesting field for environmental monitoring. Benefiting from their superior chemical and physical stability, low-cost production, high selectivity and rapid response, MIPs combined with miniaturized electrochemical transducers offer the possibility to detect target analytes in-situ. In most reports, the construction of these sensors include nanomaterials to improve their analytical characteristics, especially their sensitivity. Moreover, these sensors have been successfully applied in real water samples without the need of laborious pre-treatment steps. This review provides a general overview of electrochemical MIP-based sensors that have been reported for the detection of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants in water samples in the past decade. Special attention is given to the construction of the sensors, including different functional monomers, sensing platforms and materials employed to achieve the best sensitivity. Additionally, several parameters, such as the limit of detection, the linear concentration range and the type of water samples that were analysed are compiled.
