Abstract
Proposed mechanisms of zoonotic virus spillover often posit that wildlife transmission and amplification precede human outbreaks. Between 2006 and 2012, the palm Raphia farinifera, a rich source of dietary minerals for wildlife, was nearly extirpated from Budongo Forest, Uganda. Since then, chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, and red duiker were observed feeding on bat guano, a behavior not previously observed. Here we show that guano consumption may be a response to dietary mineral scarcity and may expose wildlife to bat-borne viruses. Videos from 2017-2019 recorded 839 instances of guano consumption by the aforementioned species. Nutritional analysis of the guano revealed high concentrations of sodium, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Metagenomic analyses of the guano identified 27 eukaryotic viruses, including a novel betacoronavirus. Our findings illustrate how "upstream" drivers such as socioeconomics and resource extraction can initiate elaborate chains of causation, ultimately increasing virus spillover risk.

Abstract
Enterococci, known for their resilience, are commonly found in food, the environment, and the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals. In recent research, six strains of enterococcus were isolated from bat guano. These include Enterococcus mundtii SRBG1, Enterococcus gallinarum SRBG3, Enterococcus faecium SRBG2, Enterococcus casseliflavus EC1, and Enterococcus devriesei CAU 1344. Identification was done using 16S DNA analysis. Each strain underwent evaluation for its technological properties (such as tolerances to various NaCl concentrations and temperatures, as well as amylolytic, β-galactosidase, lipolytic, and proteolytic activities, and EPS production) and selected probiotic properties (including safety profile, resistance to 0.3 percent bile salts and gastric juice with a pH of 2.5, lysozyme tolerance, and antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against four foodborne pathogens). The results were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis. This analysis revealed that E. mundtii SRBG1 and E. gallinarum SRBG3, followed by E. faecium SRBG2, were most closely associated with a broad range of technological characteristics and were subsequently used for fermenting skimmed milk. The rheological properties of the samples indicated a shear-thinning or non-Newtonian behavior. Furthermore, during storage of the fermented milk at 4 °C over periods of 1, 7, 14, and 21 days, there were no significant changes in bacterial count (at around 7 log10 CFU/mL) and pH when fermented with the three evaluated strains.

Abstract
Bats frequently inhabit caves and other subterranean habitats and play a critical role in subterranean food webs. With escalating threats to subterranean ecosystems, identifying the most effective measures to protect subterranean-roosting bats is critical. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation and management interventions for subterranean-roosting bats. We used network analyses to determine to what extent interventions for bats overlap those used for other subterranean taxa. We conducted our analyses with data extracted from 345 papers recommending a total of 910 conservation interventions. Gating of roost entrances was applied to preserve bat populations in 21 studies, but its effectiveness was unclear. Habitat restoration and disturbance reduction positively affected bat populations and bat behavior, respectively, in ≤4 studies. Decontamination was assessed in 2 studies and positively affected bat populations, particularly in studies focused on reducing fungal spores associated with white-nose syndrome in North America. Monitoring of bat populations as an effective conservation strategy was unclear and infrequently tested. Only 4% of bat studies simultaneously considered other subterranean organisms. However, effective interventions for bat conservation had similarities with all other organisms. If other subterranean organisms are considered when applying interventions to conserve bats, they might also benefit.

Abstract
Karaftu Cave in the northwest of Divandareh includes four floors plus an underground area. The bat hall and its underground area are covered with guano deposits. 14C dating indicates the onset of guano deposition is about 14,260±50 BP years, and its average accumulation rate is about 4.1 mm/yr for depths of 360 to 205 cm. Bacterial and fungal metabolisms decay guano, release acids, and disperse large amounts of microorganisms inside the cave. Interactions between acids and guano caused leaching, dissolution, change in the distribution, and abundance of elements, which leads to the formation of secondary minerals in guano. These variations in minerals and elements also depend on the local climatic conditions. Distribution of elements in the Ce/Ce* versus Pr/Pr* diagram and the correlation coefficient between Ce and Mn display three different paleoclimate conditions (dry, wet, and dry) during the accumulation of the guano. Also, dolomite, phosphate, and iron oxide minerals have been formed during the passage of water through bedrock beneath the guano. This water is unsuitable for drinking and harmful to the organisms in the region. Effect of these acids on the substrate also leads to the collapse of the cave floor, generation of a new underground, fall in the groundwater level, change in the groundwater drainage system, drying of springs around the cave, loss of green cover, and a negative impact on the ecosystem in the region. To keep the cave environment clean and remove these problems, it is better to harvest guano and use it as fertilizer.

Abstract
What is the least that humanity can do to mitigate the risks of future pandemics, to prevent worldwide surges in human deaths, illness, and suffering-and more waves of multitrillion US dollar impacts on the global economy? The issues around our consumption and trading of wildlife are diverse and complex, with many rural communities being dependent on wild meat for their nutritional needs. But bats might be one taxonomic group that can be successfully eliminated from the human diet and other uses, with minimal costs or inconvenience to the vast majority of the 8 billion people on Earth. The order Chiroptera merits genuine respect given all that these species contribute to human food supplies through pollination services provided by the frugivores and to disease risk mitigation delivered by insectivorous species. The global community missed its chance to stop SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 from emerging-how many more times will humanity allow this cycle to repeat? How long will governments ignore the science that is in front of them? It's past time for humans to do the least that can be done. A global taboo is needed whereby humanity agrees to leave bats alone, not fear them or try to chase them away or cull them, but to let them have the habitats they need and live undisturbed by humans.

Abstract
EPS producing bacteria was isolated and identified as Leuconostoc mesenteroides SL and Enterococcus viikkiensis N5. Optimization was carried out by Response Surface Methodology using Box Behnken Design. The GC–MS, FTIR, and NMR analysis showed that the EPS-SL and EPS-N5 are heteropolysaccharides connected by α-(1 → 6) and -(1 → 3) linkages. Both EPSs has high thermal stability. EPS exhibited appreciable antibacterial and antioxidant activity.
Two exopolysaccharides (EPS) producing strains, isolated from raw donkey milk were identified as Leuconostoc mesenteroides SL and Enterococcus viikkiensis N5 using 16S rDNA sequencing. The Box Benheken design exhibited the highest yield of EPS-SL (672.342 mg/L) produced by SL and of EPS-N5 (901 mg/L) produced by N5. The molecular weight was 1.68×104 for EPS-SL and 1.55×104 Da for EPS-N5. FTIR, NMR and GC–MS analysis showed that the EPS are heteropolysaccharides. The SEM image showed that the EPS-SL was smooth and represented a lotus leaf shape and EPS-N5 revealed a stiff-like, porous appearance and was more compact than EPS-SL. The TGA analyses showed high thermal stability and degradation temperature. Additionally, the two EPSs possessed antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and the EPS-SL had the stronger antioxidant activity. Consequently, these results suggest that the functional and biological properties of EPS-SL and EPS-N5 imply the potential application in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Recently, the interest in donkey milk has increased considerably because it proved high nutritive and functional values of their ingredients. Its chemical composition is widely studied, but its microbiota, especially lactic acid bacteria, remains less studied. This study focuses on analyzing, isolating, and identifying lactic acid bacteria and evaluating their capacity to produce biomolecules with antibacterial activity. Among 44 strains identified, 43 are Gram-positive, and most are catalase-negative and cocci-shaped. Five strains were selected to evaluate their antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Different induction methods allowed to amplify the antibacterial effects against these pathogenic strains.
