Advances in Heavy Metal Bioremediation: An Overview

Differences among active toluene-degrading microbial communities in farmland soils with different levels of heavy metal pollution

Heavy metals can severely influence the mineralisation of organic pollutants in a compound-polluted environment. However, to date, no study has focused on the effects of heavy metals on the active organic pollutant-degrading microbial communities to understand the bioremediation mechanism. In this study, toluene was used as the model organic pollutant to explore the effects of soils with different levels of heavy metal pollution on organic contaminant degradation in the same area via stable isotope probing (SIP) and 16 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Heavy metals can seriously affect toluene biodegradation and regulate the abundance and diversity of microbial communities. SIP revealed a drastic difference in the community structure of active toluene degraders between the unpolluted and heavy metal-polluted soils. All SIP-identified degraders were assigned to nine bacterial classes, among which Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacilli were shared by both treatments. Among all active degraders, Nitrospira, Nocardioides, Conexibacteraceae, and Singulisphaera were linked to toluene biodegradation for the first time. Notably, the type of active degrader and microbial diversity were strongly related to biodegradation efficiency, indicating their key role in toluene biodegradation. Overall, heavy metals can affect the microbial diversity and alter the functional microbial communities in soil, thereby influencing the removal efficiency of organic contaminants. Our findings provide novel insights into the biodegradation mechanism of organic pollutants in heavy metal-polluted soils and highlight the biodiversity of microbes involved in toluene biodegradation in compound-polluted environments.

Recent advances in alginate-based composite gel spheres for removal of heavy metals

The discharge of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater into natural water bodies is a consequence of global industrialisation. Due to their high toxicity and resistance to degradation, these heavy metal ions pose a substantial threat to human health as they accumulate and amplify. Alginate-based composite gels exhibit good adsorption and mechanical properties, excellent biodegradability, and non-toxicity, making them environmentally friendly heavy metal ion adsorbents for water with promising development prospects. This paper introduces the basic properties, cross-linking methods, synthetic approaches, modification methods, and manufacturing techniques of alginate-based composite gels. The adsorption properties and mechanical strength of these gels can be enhanced through surface modification, multi-component mixing, and embedding. The main production processes involved are sol-gel and cross-linking methods. Additionally, this paper reviews various applications of alginate composite gels for common heavy metals, rare earth elements, and radionuclides and elucidates the adsorption mechanism of alginate composite gels. This study aimed to provide a reference for synthesising new, efficient, and environmentally friendly alginate-based adsorbents and to contribute new ideas and directions for addressing the issue of heavy metal pollution.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) Assisted Bioremediation of Heavy Metal Toxicity

Due to a variety of natural and anthropogenic processes, heavy metal toxicity of soil constitutes a substantial hazard to all living beings in the environment. The heavy metals alter the soil properties, which directly or indirectly influence the agriculture systems. Thus, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)-assisted bioremediation is a promising, eco-friendly, and sustainable method for eradicating heavy metals. PGPR cleans up the heavy metal-contaminated environment using various approaches including efflux systems, siderophores and chelation, biotransformation, biosorption, bioaccumulation, precipitation, ACC deaminase activity, biodegradation, and biomineralization methods. These PGPRs have been found effective to bioremediate the heavy metal-contaminated soil through increased plant tolerance to metal stress, improved nutrient availability in soil, alteration of heavy metal pathways, and by producing some chemical compounds like siderophores and chelating ions. Many heavy metals are non-degradable; hence, another remediation approach with a broader scope of contamination removal is needed. This article also briefly emphasized the role of genetically modified PGPR strains which improve the soil's degradation rate of heavy metals. In this regard, genetic engineering, a molecular approach, could improve bioremediation efficiency and be helpful. Thus, the ability of PGPRs can aid in heavy metal bioremediation and promote a sustainable agricultural soil system.

Progress in environmental monitoring and mitigation strategies for herbicides and insecticides: A comprehensive review

Herbicides and insecticides are pervasively applied in agricultural sector to increase the yield by controlling or eliminating bug vermin and weeds. Although, resistance development occurs, direct and indirect impact on human health and ecosystem is clearly visible. Normally, herbicides and pesticides are water soluble in nature; accordingly, it is hard to decrease their deadliness and to dis-appear them from the environment. They are profoundly specific, and considered as poisonous to various peoples in agricultural and industrial work places. In order to substantially reduce the harmful impacts, it is crucial to thoroughly examine the detection and mitigation measures for these compounds. The primary objective of this paper is to provide an overview of various herbicide and pesticide detection techniques and associated remedial techniques. A short summary on occurrence and harmful effects of herbicides/insecticides on ecosystem has been included to the study. The conventional and advanced, rapid techniques for the detection of insecticides and herbicides were described in detail. A detailed overview on several mitigation strategies including advanced oxidation, adsorption, electrochemical process, and bioremediation as well as the mechanism behind the strategic approaches to reduce the effects of growing pesticide pollution has been emphasized. Regardless of the detection techniques and mitigation strategies, the recent advances employed, obstacles, and perspectives have been discussed in detail.

Assessment of Iron Biosorption Potential by Live and Dead Biomass of Bacillus subtilis (MN093305) from Aqueous Solution

Heavy metals polluted aquatic ecosystems and become a global environmental issue due to their toxic effect on all forms of ecosystems and further on all forms of life. Heavy metals are non- degradable and accumulated in different life forms by accumulating in the food chain; this increases the need for the development of a sustainable method for the removal of these metals. Biosorption is an eco-friendly and cost-effective convenient technique of heavy metal bioremediation from the contaminated aquatic ecosystem. The current investigation involves biosorption of iron using Bacillus subtilis strain (MN093305) isolated from Ganga river at different physical parameters with the highest rate of biosorption was 96.64%, 98.91%, 97.88%, and 99.44% at pH 5, 60 min incubation period, 35 °C temperature and 2.5 mg/ml of biomass respectively for dead biomass. Living biomass biosorption rate was 87.32%, 96.74%, 96.94% and 95.02% at pH 7, 72 h, 35 °C and 2.5 mg/ml respectively. Functional groups involved in the biosorption of iron by Bacillus subtilis were fitted to a second-order kinetic model. Langmuir and Freundlich's isotherm are used to evaluate data; both isotherms indicate iron absorption as a favorable process.

Unlocking the potential of biochar in the remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals for sustainable agriculture

Agricultural soils contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) impose a threat to the environmental and to human health. Amendment with biochar could be an eco-friendly and cost-effective option to decrease HMs in contaminated soil. This paper reviews the application of biochar as a soil amendment to immobilise HMs in contaminated soil. We discuss the technologies of its preparation, their specific properties, and effect on the bioavailability of HMs. Biochar stabilises HMs in contaminated soil, enhance the overall quality of the contaminated soil, and significantly reduce HM uptake by plants, making it an option in soil remediation for HM contamination. Biochar enhances the physical (e.g. bulk density, soil structure, water holding capacity), chemical (e.g. cation exchange capacity, pH, nutrient availability, ion exchange, complexes), and biological properties (e.g. microbial abundance, enzymatic activities) of contaminated soil. Biochar also enhances soil fertility, improves plant growth, and reduces the plant availability of HMs. Various field studies have shown that biochar application reduces the bioavailability of HMs from contaminated soil while increasing crop yield. The review highlights the positive effects of biochar by reducing HM bioavailability in contaminated soils. Future work is recommended to ensure that biochars offer a safe and sustainable solution to remediate soils contaminated with HMs.

Evaluation of Holmium(III), Erbium(III), and Gadolinium(III) Accumulation by Cyanobacteria Arthrospira platensis Using Neutron Activation Analysis and Elements' Effects on Biomass Quantity and Biochemical Composition

Rare-earth elements are released into the aquatic environment as a result of their extensive use in industry and agriculture, and they can be harmful for living organisms. The effects of holmium(III), erbium(III), and gadolinium(III) when added to a growth medium in concentrations ranging from 10 to 30 mg/L on the accumulation ability and biochemical composition of Arthrospira platensis were studied. According to the results of a neutron activation analysis, the uptake of elements by cyanobacteria occurred in a dose-dependent manner. The addition of gadolinium(III) to the growth medium did not significantly affect the amount of biomass, whereas erbium(III) and holmium(III) reduced it up to 22% compared to the control. The effects of rare-earth elements on the content of proteins, carbohydrates, phycobiliproteins, lipids, β carotene, and chlorophyll a were evaluated. The studied elements had different effects on the primary biomolecule content, suggesting that holmium(III) and erbium(III) were more toxic than Gd(III) for Arthrospira platensis.

Advances in responses of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants in wastewater

Nowadays, emerging pollutants are widely used and exist in wastewater, such as antibiotics, heavy metals, nanoparticle and microplastic. As a green alternative for wastewater treatment, microalgal-bacterial symbiosis has been aware of owning multiple merits of low energy consumption and little greenhouse gas emission. Thus, the responses of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants in wastewater treatment have become a hotspot in recent years. In this review paper, the removal performance of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis on organics, nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater containing emerging pollutants has been summarized. The adaptation mechanisms of microalgal-bacterial symbiosis to emerging pollutants have been analyzed. It is found that antibiotics usually have hormesis effects on microalgal-bacterial symbiosis, and that microalgal-bacterial symbiosis appears to show more capacity to remove tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole, rather than oxytetracycline and enrofloxacin. Generally, microalgal-bacterial symbiosis can adapt to heavy metals at a concentration of less than 1 mg/L, but its capabilities to remove contaminants can be significantly affected at 10 mg/L heavy metals. Further research should focus on the influence of mixed emerging pollutants on microalgal-bacterial symbiosis, and the feasibility of using selected emerging pollutants (e.g., antibiotics) as a carbon source for microalgal-bacterial symbiosis should also be explored. This review is expected to deepen our understandings on emerging pollutants removal from wastewater by microalgal-bacterial symbiosis.

Rhizospheric bacteria: the key to sustainable heavy metal detoxification strategies

The increasing rate of industrialization, anthropogenic, and geological activities have expedited the release of heavy metals (HMs) at higher concentration in environment. HM contamination resulting due to its persistent nature, injudicious use poses a potential threat by causing metal toxicities in humans and animals as well as severe damage to aquatic organisms. Bioremediation is an emerging and reliable solution for mitigation of these contaminants using rhizospheric microorganisms in an environmentally safe manner. The strategies are based on exploiting microbial metabolism and various approaches developed by plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) to minimize the toxicity concentration of HM at optimum levels for the environmental clean-up. Rhizospheric bacteria are employed for significant growth of plants in soil contaminated with HM. Exploitation of bacteria possessing plant-beneficial traits as well as metal detoxifying property is an economical and promising approach for bioremediation of HM. Microbial cells exhibit different mechanisms of HM resistance such as active transport, extra cellular barrier, extracellular and intracellular sequestration, and reduction of HM. Tolerance of HM in microorganisms may be chromosomal or plasmid originated. Proteins such as MerT and MerA of mer operon and czcCBA, ArsR, ArsA, ArsD, ArsB, and ArsC genes are responsible for metal detoxification in bacterial cell. This review gives insights about the potential of rhizospheric bacteria in HM removal from various polluted areas. In addition, it also gives deep insights about different mechanism of action expressed by microorganisms for HM detoxification. The dual-purpose use of biological agent as plant growth enhancement and remediation of HM contaminated site is the most significant future prospect of this article.

Bioaccumulation and Bioremediation of Heavy Metals in Fishes-A Review

Heavy metals, the most potent contaminants of the environment, are discharged into the aquatic ecosystems through the effluents of several industries, resulting in serious aquatic pollution. This type of severe heavy metal contamination in aquaculture systems has attracted great attention throughout the world. These toxic heavy metals are transmitted into the food chain through their bioaccumulation in different tissues of aquatic species and have aroused serious public health concerns. Heavy metal toxicity negatively affects the growth, reproduction, and physiology of fish, which is threatening the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector. Recently, several techniques, such as adsorption, physio-biochemical, molecular, and phytoremediation mechanisms have been successfully applied to reduce the toxicants in the environment. Microorganisms, especially several bacterial species, play a key role in this bioremediation process. In this context, the present review summarizes the bioaccumulation of different heavy metals into fishes, their toxic effects, and possible bioremediation techniques to protect the fishes from heavy metal contamination. Additionally, this paper discusses existing strategies to bioremediate heavy metals from aquatic ecosystems and the scope of genetic and molecular approaches for the effective bioremediation of heavy metals.

Effect of Charcoal, Probiotic, and Chlorhexidine Mouthwashes on Mechanical Properties and Surface Characterization of Ceramic-Coated Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Arch Wires: A Comparative In-Vitro Study

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

To determine the impact on the mechanical properties and surface features of ceramic-coated nickel-titanium (CC-Ni-Ti) archwires when subjected to charcoal, probiotic, and chlorhexidine mouthwashes in in vitro conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighty samples of 25 mm were cut from the posterior end of preformed maxillary 0.016'' CC-Ni-Ti super elastic archwires (Koden Company, USA) and distributed into four equal groups. Each group of wires was immersed in artificial saliva (Wet Mouth Mouthwash, ICPA Health Products Ltd., India) (control), charcoal mouthwash (Hello activated charcoal extra freshening mouthwash, Hello Products LLC, USA), probiotic mouthwash (Perfora, Probiotic Rinse, India), and 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash (Sensorange, Orange Biotech, Pvt., Ltd., India) (experimental groups) for 90 min at 37 °C. All samples were taken out of their respective solutions and washed with distilled water prior to testing. A three-point bending test was performed on 15 samples from each group using a universal testing device. During the loading and unloading of the archwires, the yield strength (YS), flexural modulus of elasticity (E), and spring back ratio (YS/E) were calculated. The remaining five wires from each group were observed under the scanning electron microscope (SEM) for surface topography evaluation.

RESULTS

The mean differences of loading YS, E, and YS/E between chlorhexidine and charcoal are 302.91 MPa, 4.28 GPa, and 0.0004, whereas unloading values are 172.32 MPa, 4.16 GPa, and 0.0003, respectively, with a statistical significance of <0.001 in terms of YS and E. The mean differences of loading YS, E, and YS/E between charcoal and probiotic are 305.36 MPa, 4.54 GPa, and 0.0005, whereas unloading values are 173.77 MPa, 3.66 GPa, and 0.0003, respectively, with a statistical significance of <0.001 in terms of YS and E. The mean differences of loading YS, E, and YS/E between chlorhexidine and probiotic are 2.45 MPa, 0.26 GPa, and 0.00007, whereas unloading values are 1.44 MPa, 0.49 GPa, and 0.0000533, respectively, with no statistical significance of >0.001 in terms of YS, E, and YS/E. Surface topography alteration was clearly appreciated in the charcoal and probiotic mouthwash groups compared to charcoal mouthwash.

CONCLUSIONS

Loading and unloading of 0.016" ceramic-coated nickel-titanium archwires showed an increase in mechanical properties except for the spring back ratio on exposure to chlorhexidine, probiotic, and charcoal mouthwashes. Chlorhexidine and probiotic mouthwashes had a higher yield strength and flexural modulus of elasticity in comparison with charcoal mouthwash and artificial saliva on 0.016" ceramic-coated nickel-titanium archwires. More corrosive changes were seen on 0.016" ceramic-coated nickel-titanium archwires when immersed in chlorhexidine, followed by probiotic and charcoal mouthwashes.

Sequestration of cobalt and nickel by biofilm forming bacteria isolated from spent nuclear fuel pool water

In the current study, six bacterial types, isolated from spent nuclear fuel (SNF) pool facility, were investigated for their ability to sequester heavy metals (cobalt and nickel). Biofilm formation by the six bacterial isolates, viz., Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus species, Staphylococcus arlettae, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus auricularis, and Chryseobacterium gleum, were assayed, and they were found to have significant biofilm forming property. Their biofilms were characterised using confocal scanning laser microscopy, and their potential to accumulate Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ from bulk solutions was analysed with respect to time. A comparative assessment of bioaccumulation capacity was done using biofilms, planktonic cells, and live vs dead cells. The strains accumulated Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ in the range of 4 × 10^-4 to 1 × 10^-5 g/mg of cell biomass. It is interesting to note that dead biomass also showed significant removal of the two metal ions, suggesting an alternative process for metal removal. This study suggests that hostile environments can be a repertoire of putative bacterial species with potential heavy metals and other contaminants remediation properties.

Improvements in Bioremediation Agents and Their Modified Strains in Mediating Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution has been a significant concern around the globe as the release of toxic pollutants is associated with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic impacts on living organisms. Since microorganisms have the natural potential to degrade toxic metabolites into nontoxic forms, an eco-friendly approach known as bioremediation has been used to tackle toxic-induced pollution. Bioremediation has three fundamental levels, i.e., natural attenuation, bio-augmentation, and biostimulation in which the synthetic biology approach has been lately utilized to enhance the conventional bioremediation techniques. Recently, a more advanced approach of programmable nucleases such as zinc finger nucleases, tale-like effector nucleases, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats Cas is being employed to engineer several bacterial, fungal, and algal strains for targeted mutagenesis by knocking in and out specific genes which are involved in reconstructing the metabolic pathways of native microbes. These genetically engineered microorganisms possess heavy metal resistance, greater substrate range, enhanced enzymatic activity, and binding affinity which accelerate the biodegradation of toxic pollutants to environmentally safe levels. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of how we can correlate the novel genetics-based approaches employed to produce genetically engineered microorganisms to enhance the biodegradation of hazardous pollutants, hence, developing a clean and sustainable ecosystem.

Global Situation of Bioremediation of Leachate-Contaminated Soils by Treatment with Microorganisms: A Systematic Review

This systematic review presents the current state of research in the last five years on contaminants in soils, especially in leachates from solid waste landfills, with emphasis on biological remediation. In this work, the pollutants that can be treated by microorganisms and the results obtained worldwide were studied. All the data obtained were compiled, integrated, and analyzed by soil type, pollutant type, bacterial type, and the countries where these studies were carried out. This review provides reliable data on the contamination of soils worldwide, especially soils contaminated by leachate from municipal landfills. The extent of contamination, treatment objectives, site characteristics, cost, type of microorganisms to be used, and time must be considered when selecting a viable remediation strategy. The results of this study can help develop innovative and applicable methods for evaluating the overall contamination of soil with different contaminants and soil types. These findings can help develop innovative, applicable, and economically feasible methods for the sustainable management of contaminated soils, whether from landfill leachate or other soil types, to reduce or eliminate risk to the environment and human health, and to achieve greater greenery and functionality on the planet.

Oxidized Biomass and Its Usage as Adsorbent for Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Nowadays, very coarse wool fibers are considered waste biomass and are discarded at random or burned. Therefore, it is of actual interest to valorize coarse wool fibers as utile products. In this sense, we report herein an environmentally-friendly process for the preparation of a new material based on oxidized wool fibers and designed for efficient adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater. The morphology and the structure of the obtained product were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with an X-ray energy-dispersive module (EDX) and by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Likewise, the performances of the oxidized wool fibers for the adsorption of heavy metal cations (Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺) from aqueous solutions were tested. The adsorption kinetics data were analyzed by applying the pseudo-first-order (PFO) and pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic models. The equilibrium of the adsorption process was investigated by using the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. According to the Langmuir isotherms registered at 300 K, the maximum adsorption capacities of the oxidized wool were found to increase from Cu²⁺ (9.41 mg/g) and Cd²⁺ (10.42 mg/g) to Pb²⁺ (30.71 mg/g). Consequently, the removal efficiency of metal ions was found to vary in the range of 96.8–99.7%. The thermodynamic parameters (e.g., enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy) were calculated and discussed.

Harnessing the Potential of Bacillus altitudinis MT422188 for Copper Bioremediation

The contamination of heavy metals is a cause of environmental concern across the globe, as their increasing levels can pose a significant risk to our natural ecosystems and public health. The present study was aimed to evaluate the ability of a copper (Cu)-resistant bacterium, characterized as Bacillus altitudinis MT422188, to remove Cu from contaminated industrial wastewater. Optimum growth was observed at 37°C, pH 7, and 1 mm phosphate, respectively. Effective concentration 50 (EC50), minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and cross-heavy metal resistance pattern were observed at 5.56 mm, 20 mm, and Ni &gt; Zn &gt; Cr &gt; Pb &gt; Ag &gt; Hg, respectively. Biosorption of Cu by live and dead bacterial cells in its presence and inhibitors 1 and 2 (DNP and DCCD) was suggestive of an ATP-independent efflux system. B. altitudinis MT422188 was also able to remove 73 mg/l and 82 mg/l of Cu at 4th and 8th day intervals from wastewater, respectively. The presence of Cu resulted in increased GR (0.004 ± 0.002 Ug−1FW), SOD (0.160 ± 0.005 Ug−1FW), and POX (0.061 ± 0.004 Ug−1FW) activity. Positive motility (swimming, swarming, twitching) and chemotactic behavior demonstrated Cu as a chemoattractant for the cells. Metallothionein (MT) expression in the presence of Cu was also observed by SDS-PAGE. Adsorption isotherm and pseudo-kinetic-order studies suggested Cu biosorption to follow Freundlich isotherm as well as second-order kinetic model, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters such as Gibbs free energy (∆G°), change in enthalpy (∆H° = 10.431 kJ/mol), and entropy (∆S° = 0.0006 kJ/mol/K) depicted the biosorption process to a feasible, endothermic reaction. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) analyses revealed the physiochemical and morphological changes in the bacterial cell after biosorption, indicating interaction of Cu ions with its functional groups. Therefore, these features suggest the potentially effective role of B. altitudinis MT422188 in Cu bioremediation.

Microbial Interventions in Bioremediation of Heavy Metal Contaminants in Agroecosystem

Soil naturally comprises heavy metals but due to the rapid industrialization and anthropogenic events such as uncontrolled use of agrochemicals their concentration is heightened up to a large extent across the world. Heavy metals are non-biodegradable and persistent in nature thereby disrupting the environment and causing huge health threats to humans. Exploiting microorganisms for the removal of heavy metal is a promising approach to combat these adverse consequences. The microbial remediation is very crucial to prevent the leaching of heavy metal or mobilization into the ecosystem, as well as to make heavy metal extraction simpler. In this scenario, technological breakthroughs in microbes-based heavy metals have pushed bioremediation as a promising alternative to standard approaches. So, to counteract the deleterious effects of these toxic metals, some microorganisms have evolved different mechanisms of detoxification. This review aims to scrutinize the routes that are responsible for the heavy metal(loid)s contamination of agricultural land, provides a vital assessment of microorganism bioremediation capability. We have summarized various processes of heavy metal bioremediation, such as biosorption, bioleaching, biomineralization, biotransformation, and intracellular accumulation, as well as the use of genetically modified microbes and immobilized microbial cells for heavy metal removal.

Plants-Microorganisms-Based Bioremediation for Heavy Metal Cleanup: Recent Developments, Phytoremediation Techniques, Regulation Mechanisms, and Molecular Responses

Rapid industrialization, mine tailings runoff, and agricultural activities are often detrimental to soil health and can distribute hazardous metal(loid)s into the soil environment, with harmful effects on human and ecosystem health. Plants and their associated microbes can be deployed to clean up and prevent environmental pollution. This green technology has emerged as one of the most attractive and acceptable practices for using natural processes to break down organic contaminants or accumulate and stabilize metal pollutants by acting as filters or traps. This review explores the interactions between plants, their associated microbiomes, and the environment, and discusses how they shape the assembly of plant-associated microbial communities and modulate metal(loid)s remediation. Here, we also overview microbe-heavy-metal(loid)s interactions and discuss microbial bioremediation and plants with advanced phytoremediation properties approaches that have been successfully used, as well as their associated biological processes. We conclude by providing insights into the underlying remediation strategies' mechanisms, key challenges, and future directions for the remediation of metal(loid)s-polluted agricultural soils with environmentally friendly techniques.
