BACKGROUND

Facial acne scars are a prevalent concern, leading to the development of various treatment modalities.

OBJECTIVES

This review aims to explore the latest advancements in the treatment of facial acne scars, focusing on both surgical and non-surgical methods.

METHODS

The non-surgical treatments reviewed include topical medications (such as retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids) and non-invasive procedures (like microdermabrasion and chemical peels). Surgical options discussed are punch excision, subcision, and fractional laser treatments.

RESULTS

Combination therapy, integrating both surgical and non-surgical approaches, is frequently utilized to achieve optimal results in scar improvement.

CONCLUSION

Recent advancements in the treatment of facial acne scars provide promising options for individuals seeking improvement. However, these treatments have associated risks and potential adverse effects, highlighting the importance of consulting a dermatologist before beginning any treatment regimen.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Keloid: Method Summary and Effect Evaluation

Keloid is a prevalent skin disorder characterized by the abnormal growth of keloid tissue, which usually occurs following wound healing or surgical incisions. It typically progresses through several stages: the inflammatory stage, the proliferative stage, collagen remodeling, and ultimately the formation of keloid. This review aims to summarize the diagnostic and therapeutic methods for keloid, and evaluate their effectiveness. The diagnosis of keloid is usually based on medical history and clinical manifestations such as pain, itching, erythema, and induration. Other commonly used diagnostic methods include tissue biopsy and ultrasound examination. Various treatment options for keloid exist, including physical therapy, medication, surgical treatment, and radiation therapy. Physical therapy includes pressure therapy, laser therapy, such as silicone sheets, elastic bandages, and laser irradiation. Medication treatment mainly involves the application of topical medications or intralesional injections, such as topical corticosteroids, 5-fluorouracil, and others. Radiation therapy can be administered using applicators and superficial radiation therapy, among other methods. The treatment outcomes of keloid vary from person to person and recurrence is common. Therefore, a comprehensive treatment approach may be the most effective strategy. Individualized treatment plans should consider factors such as the patient's age, gender, medical history, and the severity of the condition. In conclusion, the diagnosis and treatment of keloid require consideration of multiple factors and the implementation of individualized treatment plans. Future research should focus on identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying the occurrence and progression of keloid in order to develop more effective treatment methods.

Meconopsis quintuplinervia Regel Improves Cutibacterium acnes-Induced Inflammatory Responses in a Mouse Ear Edema Model and Suppresses Pro-Inflammatory Chemokine Production via the MAPK and NF-κB Pathways in RAW264.7 Cells

BACKGROUND

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common adolescent skin condition which is mainly caused by Cutibacterium acnes overcolonization and subsequent inflammation.

OBJECTIVE

Our previous studies demonstrated that ethanol extracts of Meconopsis quintuplinervia Regel (EMQ) possess significant antimicrobial properties. However, their protective effects and potential mechanisms against AV remain unclear.

METHODS

In the present study, the EMQ treatment potential for AV was evaluated in a C. acnes-induced mouse ear edema model, and the EMQ anti-inflammatory mechanism was evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells.

RESULTS

The results showed that EMQ alleviated edema formation and inflammatory cell infiltration in an acne mouse model by suppressing inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor α expression. Moreover, EMQ inhibited the phosphorylation of MAP kinases (MAPKs) such as p38, JNK, and ERK, the phosphorylation and degradation of IκB-α and the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) p65 in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells.

CONCLUSION

These findings suggest the potent anti-inflammatory activity of EMQ is possibly through the regulation of the MAPKs and NF-κB signaling pathways. Inhibition of C. acnes activity combined with a powerful anti-inflammatory effect of EMQ indicated its potential as a novel therapeutic option for AV.

Soluble Polymer Microneedles Loaded with Interferon Alpha 1b for Treatment of Hyperplastic Scar

To achieve the painless administration of interferon alpha 1b (rhIFNα-1b), a double-layered soluble polymer microneedle (MN) patch loaded with rhIFNα-1b was used to deliver rhIFNα-1b transdermally. The solution containing rhIFNα-1b was concentrated in the MN tips under negative pressure. The MNs punctured the skin and delivered rhIFNα-1b to the epidermis and dermis. The MN tips implanted in the skin dissolved within 30 min and gradually released rhIFNα-1b. The rhIFNα-1b had a significant inhibitory effect on the abnormal proliferation of fibroblasts and excessive deposition of collagen fibers in the scar tissue. The color and thickness of the scar tissue treated using the MN patches loaded with rhIFNα-1b were effectively reduced. The relative expressions of type I collagen (Collagen I), type III collagen (Collagen III), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were significantly downregulated in scar tissues. In summary, the MN patch loaded with rhIFNα-1b provided an effective method for the transdermal delivery of rhIFNα-1b.
