Fabrication of Abelmoschus manihot gum/pullulan/magnesium L-ascorbate green composite packaging film and its excellent performance in preserving fresh-cut carrots

Pullulan-based composite film can be a potential alternative packing material to non-environmentally friendly plastic wrap (PE) to preserve fresh-cut carrots. However, many developed pullulan-based composites either have high water vapor permeability (WVP) and high mechanical strength or vice versa, which limits the practicality of the developed packaging materials for potential commercialization. Herein, Abelmoschus manihot gum (AMG)/pullulan/magnesium L-ascorbate (MLA) was created as a green composite film (APL) to preserve fresh-cut carrots. The optimal amount of MLA was found to be 10 % (APL10), demonstrating a balance of lower WVP and greater mechanical strength and antioxidant performance than many pullulan-based films. This effectively solved many problems faced by other pullulan-based packaging films. After the fresh-cut carrots were packed with the composite film for 4 days, it was found that APL10 was effective in preserving the quality of carrots, in terms of freshness, weight loss rate, Vitamin C (VC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content after 4 days of storage, much better than non-biodegradable PE. Thus, based on these findings, it is concluded that APL films have huge potential as a green packaging material for food to replace PE in the future.

Evaluation of composition effects on the tissue-adhesive, mechanical and physical properties of physically crosslinked hydrogels based on chitosan and pullulan for wound healing applications

Tissue adhesion of hydrogels plays an important role in wound healing, which can improve the efficiency of wound treatment, stop bleeding, facilitate tissue growth and wound closure. However, most non-covalent crosslinked hydrogels have weak tissue adhesion and rheological properties. Furthermore, it remains a challenge to synthesize a fully physically crosslinked hydrogel with good rheological properties without compromising its tissue adhesion strength. In this paper, a physically crosslinked hydrogel was developed from a mixture of chitosan and pullulan in different polymer volume ratios using aqueous NaOH. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, rheological and lap shear tests were used to evaluate the influence of polymer volume ratios on the rheological, and tissue adhesive properties of the hydrogels. It was found that the hydrogels possessed high tissue adhesive strength ranging from 18.0 ± 0.90 to 49.0 ± 2.45 kPa and good storage moduli up to 5.157 ± 1.062 kPa. Gentamicin was incorporated into this polymer matrix and the release profile was investigated. The ratio of chitosan and pullulan to obtain hydrogels with optimum viscoelastic and tissue adhesive properties was identified to be CS/PUL 2:1. These results indicated that the synthesized hydrogels can be potential materials for biomedical applications such as medical adhesives and wound dressings.

Fabrication and characterization of pullulan/tapioca starch-based antibacterial films incorporated with Litsea cubeba essential oil for meat preservation

Active packaging is a novel technology that utilizes active materials to interact with products and the environment, improving food shelf life. The purpose of this work was to fabricate a multifunctional film using Litsea cubeba essential oil (LC-EO) (1 %, 3 %, 5 %, and 7 %) as the active ingredient and pullulan(P)/tapioca starch (TS) as the carrier material. Adding essential oil improves the films properties, such as barrier ability, anti-oxidant, and antibacterial activity. However, tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) were slightly reduced from 28.94 MPa to 11.29 MPa and 15.36 % to 12.19 %. The developed PTS3% films showed the best performance in mechanical properties, especially EAB (14.26 %), WVP (3.26 %) and OP (3.13 %), respectively. The inhibitory zone diameters in the agar-well diffusion test were 18.59 mm for Staphylococcus aureus and 17.32 mm for Escherichia coli. Further study was conducted to compare the preservation effects of film with low-density polyethylene bag (LDPE) on chilled beef. Remarkably, PTS3% film decreased the bacterial population in beef meat while maintaining the pH, color, texture, and TBARS levels within an acceptable range for ten days of storage at 4 °C rather than in a low-density polyethylene bag. The outcomes indicated the potential of PTS3% films in food packaging applications.

Exopolysaccharides of Fungal Origin: Properties and Pharmaceutical Applications

Fungal exopolysaccharides (EPSs) represent an important group of bioactive compounds secreted by fungi. These biopolymers can be utilized individually or in combination with different bioactive substances for a broad range of pharmaceutical field applications, due to their various biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-diabetic, and anticoagulant effects. The paper presents an up-to-date review of the main fungal polysaccharides (pullulan, schizophyllan, scleroglucan, botryosphaeran, lentinan, grifolan, and lasiodiplodan), highlighting their structures, producing strains, and useful properties in a double position, as controlled release (rate and selectively targeting) drug carriers, but mostly as active immunomodulating and antitumor compounds in cancer therapy.

Promoting adsorption performance and mechanical strength in composite porous gel film

Starch is widely used to prepare biodegradable films due to its superior biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and renewability. In this work, a novel K⁺/carrageenan porous-starch/casein gel film with high oil absorption was prepared using modified porous starch. Optimal gel stability and uniformity were obtained when adding 10 mg/mL k-carrageenan and 2 mg/mL K⁺ to 2 mg/mL microgels, with significantly reduced crystallinity and elasticity and increased tensile strength. The concentration of k-carrageenan was the main factor affecting gel strength and the hydrophilic and mechanical properties of the film. In addition, the film-forming solution showed excellent fluidity and spreading typical of non-Newtonian fluids. The film also exhibited a highly porous structure, as visualized by SEM and AFM, in line with a cumulative oil absorption rate of 87.5 % within 20 min, which was significantly higher than that obtained with glutinous rice starch. In conclusion, reinforcement of starch-based microgels as described in this study can maximize the film's adsorption performance and mechanical properties, with promising applications in skin care and beauty products.
