The characteristic of otoacoustic emissions in full-term neonates according to ABO blood groups

Introduction

Previous research has suggested that individuals with different blood groups show varied incidences of noise-induced hearing loss. The reduced otoacoustic emissions amplitudes indicate the higher possibilities of outer hair cell damage for noise exposure.

Objective

The objective is to analyze the characteristics of otoacoustic emissions, including the occurrence of spontaneous otoacoustic emission and the amplitudes of distortion product otoacoustic emission at certain frequencies in full term neonates with different ABO blood groups.

Methods

A total of 80 selected full-term female neonates who passed the initial newborn hearing screen were enrolled into the study, with equal number of participants in four ABO blood groups (Blood Group A, Blood Group B, Blood Group AB, Blood Group O). Measurements of spontaneous otoacoustic emission and distortion product otoacoustic emission were performed in both ears for all participants.

Results

(1) The blood group O participants showed significantly fewer spontaneous otoacoustic emission occurrences than the other three blood groups (A = 70%, B = 80%, AB = 67%, O = 25%, p <  0.05). (2) The blood group O participants showed lower DPOAE amplitudes at 1257 Hz (M = 4.55 dB, SD = 8.36), 1587 Hz (M = 11.60 dB, SD = 6.57), 3174 Hz (M = 7.25 dB, SD = 5.99), 5042 Hz (M = 13.60, SD = 6.70) than participants with the other three blood groups in left ears (p < 0.05). In right ears, the blood group O participants showed reduced amplitudes at 1257 Hz (M = 6.55 dB, SD = 8.36), 1587 Hz (M = 13.60 dB, SD = 6.57), 3174 Hz (M = 7.65 dB, SD = 6.43), 5042 Hz (M = 13.65 dB, SD = 6.50) than participants from non-O blood groups (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Female individuals with blood group O have lower otoacoustic emissions values than individuals with the other three blood groups. We need to further investigate the possible relationships between ABO blood group and cochlear function, including the potential influences of noise damage on cochlear outer hair cells.

Are ABO Blood Groups or Rh Antigen Perinatal Factors Affecting the Pass Rate of Transient Otoacoustic Emissions Screening Tests in Healthy Newborns during the First 48 h of Life?

Most hospitals recommend performing neonatal hearing screening. Transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) tests represent an ideal technique for conducting this process. Previous studies have related the influence of ABO blood group and Rhesus antigens (Rh) on the susceptibility to various pathologies. However, available data about the potential relationship between ABO blood groups, Rh, and TEOAE pass rates are sparse. Recently, several authors concluded that O blood group and Rh+ are possible influential factors of TEOAE pass rates. Significantly different TEOAE amplitude response between the four main ABO blood groups were observed among normal-hearing individuals. Moreover, ABO blood groups were discussed as a possible influential factor for the development of noise-induced hearing loss later in life. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between ABO blood groups, Rh, and the first TEOAE pass rates in healthy newborns. Data were retrospectively collected from healthy newborns at the maternity ward of F. Borja hospital in Gandia (Spain). Rh and ABO were compared with the results of TEOAE performed within the first 48 h of life. Results: the study group included 2765 newborns. No significant correlation between ABO blood group or Rh and TEOAE pass rates was observed in comparative tables. Conclusion: ABO blood group and Rhesus antigens do not appear to have a significant impact on the pass rate of TEOAE screening in healthy newborns.

Can Rh antigens be a risk factor in noise-induced hearing loss?

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common occupational problems and is one of the main causes of deafness. Many factors cause NIHL. Individual susceptibility is one of them. Rhesus (Rh) antigens and ABO blood groups can be factors in determining individual susceptibility. We aim to investigate the relationship between the Rh antigens and NIHL. The study was conducted in 438 factory workers who had been exposed to a noise level more than 85 dB for 8 h a day for a period of >/=15 years. The audiologic results and blood groups were obtained from the individual health records of the factory workers. We determined NIHL in 236 (53.9%) workers. Two hundred and nineteen (55.4%) of Rh-positive workers and seventeen (39.5%) of Rh-negative workers have NIHL, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05), whereas no statistically significant difference was determined between the NIHL and ABO blood groups. In conclusion, we suggest that the people with Rh-positive blood group are more prone to develop NIHL.

Sequential changes in anti-GAL-1 staining of the rat organ of Corti following amikacin exposure

Hair cell loss and a non-functional epithelial reorganization appeared in the organ of Corti after acoustic or toxic damage. Moreover, in the drug damaged organ of Corti, transient atypical cells were recently described with characteristics of both immature hair cells and/or non-sensory epithelial cells. The phenotype of these atypical cells has been now investigated by using the galectine 1 (GAL-1) antibody. In the normal organ of Corti, this antibody recognizes all the epithelial cells except the sensory hair cells and their supporting cells. At PD 21, transient atypical cells were not stained by GAL-1 antibody, suggesting that they were originated from hair cells or their supporting cells. Later, the organ of Corti was substituted by an epithelial scare, GAL-1 stained. This study also emphasizes the particular resistance of the cochlear apex to degeneration after antibiotic intoxication.

Blood group phenotype determines lectin-mediated adhesion of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to human outer ear canal epithelium

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most frequent bacterial pathogen causing acute diffuse otitis externa. In a recent prospective phase II study we demonstrated that lectin-mediated bacterial adhesion can be blocked by receptor-analogue carbohydrates in patients suffering from Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced acute otitis externa. In this investigation, human ABO blood group antigens were analysed on outer ear canal epithelial cells with standard routine histological procedures by monoclonal antibodies for the blood groups A and B, and with Ulex europaeus I lectin for the blood group O, respectively. In all cases (n = 20) the blood groups could be shown immunohistologically. P. aeruginosa-specific adhesion and inhibition assays were performed in the presence of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), D-mannose and A-like substance. Outer ear canal tissue sections were incubated with P. aeruginosa (strain PA 60), presenting lectin-specificity for GalNAc. Sections from patients presenting with blood group A were closely settled with bacteria in the presence of non-specific GlcNAc, D-mannose and PBS however, GalNAc and A-like substance inhibited the microbial adhesion. Amongst others, P. aeruginosa present adhesion molecules (lectins) with specificity for GalNAc. Thus, the correlation between blood group A phenotype and P. aeruginosa-induced acute diffuse otitis externa was investigated. Statistical evaluation proved a highly significant association. These data support the hypothesis that P. aeruginosa lectins with GalNAc specificity apparently adhere to GalNAc moieties, representing the terminal blood group A-determinant and further indicate that patients presenting with blood group A may have a genetic disposition for this form of otitis externa.

H and B human blood-group antigen expression in cochlear hair cells is modulated by thyroxine

The presence of human blood-group antigens in developing and adult hypothyroid rat cochleas was analyzed using antibodies directed against antigens H and B. During postnatal development, hypothyroid rat cochleas exhibited a highly selective expression of both B and H antigens, mainly at the hair cell level. Labeling for antigen B was found throughout the hair cells, whereas the antibody directed against antigen H selectively labeled the apical part of these cells. These immunostaining patterns were similar to those found in normal (euthyroid) rat cochleas, but antigenic expression periods were clearly prolonged. Thus, whereas in normal rat cochleas, the B and H antigenic expression disappears from postnatal day (PD) 9 on, in cochleas of hypothyroid rats the reactivity was intense until PD15; it decreased from this developmental stage, and was negative or only faintly positive at PD30. Therefore, in congenital hypothyroidism, hair cell immunoreactivity is present at developmental stages that are negative in normal rat cochleas. These results suggest that human blood-group antigen expression on the developing cochlear hair cells of rats is modulated by thyroxine and that thyroxine is necessary for the temporal expression pattern and secretion of normal glycoproteins.
