Abstract
Introduction: Light profoundly influences human physiology, behaviour and cognition by affecting various functions through light-sensitive cells in the retina. Light therapy has proven effective in treating seasonal depression and other disorders. However, designing appropriate control conditions for light-based interventions remains a challenge.Materials and methods: This article presents a novel framework for selecting, implementing and evaluating control conditions in light studies, offering theoretical foundations and practical guidance. It reviews the fundamentals of photoreception and discusses control strategies such as dim light, darkness, different wavelengths, spectral composition and metameric conditions. Special cases like dynamic lighting, simulated dawn and dusk, complex interventions and studies involving blind or visually impaired patients are also considered.Results: The practical guide outlines steps for selection, implementation, evaluation and reporting, emphasizing the importance of α-opic calculations and physiological validation.Conclusion: In conclusion, constructing effective control conditions is crucial for demonstrating the efficacy of light interventions in various research scenarios.

Abstract
Ketamine is a rapid-acting antidepressant associated with various cognitive side effects. To mitigate these side effects while enhancing efficacy, it can be co-administered with other antidepressants. In our study, we adopted a similar strategy by combining ketamine with environmental enrichment, a potent sensory-motor paradigm, in adult male Wistar rats. We divided the animals into four groups based on a combination of housing conditions and ketamine versus vehicle injections. The groups included those housed in standard cages or an enriched environment for 50 days, which encompassed a 13-day-long behavioral testing period. Each group received either two doses of ketamine (20 mg/kg, IP) or saline as a vehicle. We tested the animals in the novel object recognition test (NORT), forced swim test (FST), open field test (OFT), elevated plus maze (EPM), and Morris water maze (MWM), which was followed by ex vivo c-Fos immunohistochemistry. We observed that combining environmental enrichment with ketamine led to a synergistic antidepressant effect. Environmental enrichment also ameliorated the spatial memory deficits caused by ketamine in the MWM. There was enhanced neuronal activity in the habenula of the enrichment only group following the probe trial of the MWM. In contrast, no differential activity was observed in enriched animals that received ketamine injections. The present study showed how environmental enrichment can enhance the antidepressant properties of ketamine while reducing some of its side effects, highlighting the potential of combining pharmacological and sensory-motor manipulations in the treatment of mood disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects over 3 million Americans and has a relapsing and remitting course with up to 30% of patients experiencing exacerbations each year despite the availability of immune targeted therapies. An urgent need exists to develop adjunctive treatment approaches to better manage IBD symptoms and disease activity. Circadian disruption is associated with increased disease activity and may be an important modifiable treatment target for IBD. Morning light treatment, which advances and stabilizes circadian timing, may have the potential to improve IBD symptoms and disease activity, but no studies have explored these potential therapeutic benefits in IBD. Therefore, in this study, we aim to test the effectiveness of morning light treatment for patients with IBD. METHODS We will recruit sixty-eight individuals with biopsy-proven IBD and clinical symptoms and randomize them to 4-weeks of morning light treatment or 4-weeks of treatment as usual (TAU), with equivalent study contact. Patient-reported outcomes (IBD-related quality of life, mood, sleep), clinician-rated disease severity, and a biomarker of gastrointestinal inflammation (fecal calprotectin) will be assessed before and after treatment. Our primary objective will be to test the effect of morning light treatment versus TAU on IBD-related quality of life and our secondary objectives will be to test the effects on clinician-rated disease activity, depression, and sleep quality. We will also explore the effect of morning light treatment versus TAU on a biomarker of gastrointestinal inflammation (fecal calprotectin), and the potential moderating effects of steroid use, restless leg syndrome, and biological sex. DISCUSSION Morning light treatment may be an acceptable, feasible, and effective adjunctive treatment for individuals with active IBD suffering from impaired health-related quality of life. TRIAL REGISTRATION The study protocol was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT06094608 on October 23, 2023, before recruitment began on February 1, 2024.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bright light therapy (BLT) is efficacious for seasonal and non-seasonal depression. However, the current state of BLT use in practice is unknown, impeding efforts to identify and address utilization gaps. This study's objective was to investigate BLT delivery in a nationwide U.S. healthcare system. METHODS This was a retrospective observational study of electronic medical records from all veterans who received outpatient mood disorder-related care in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from October 2008 through September 2020. BLT delivery was measured through the placement of light box consults. RESULTS Of the 3,442,826 veterans who received outpatient mood disorder care, only 57,908 (1.68 %) received a light box consult. Consults increased by 548.44 % (99.9 % credible interval: 467.36 %, 638.74 %) over the timeframe and displayed a robust yearly cycle that peaked on either December 21st or December 22nd. Past mental health treatment for a mood disorder was associated with a higher probability of a consult (relative risk = 4.79, 99.9 % CI: 4.21, 5.60). There was low representation related to veteran age, gender, race, and ethnicity. LIMITATIONS No information on patients who declined light boxes or actual light box use following consult placement. CONCLUSIONS Outpatient BLT delivery for mood disorders in the VHA remains low, despite significant growth over the past decade. It also displays a strong seasonal rhythm that peaks on the winter solstice, suggesting a limited focus on seasonal depression and a suboptimal reactive approach to changing sunlight. Overall, there exists ample opportunity for novel implementation efforts aimed at increasing utilization of BLT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances are a fundamental feature of depression, with their persistence after remission serving as a key risk factor for recurrence of depressive episodes, suicide, and hypnotics abuse. Though Adjunct Bright Light Therapy (BLT) has shown efficacy in treating depression by improving sleep duration and timing, its impact on subjective sleep quality remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE This study investigates the effect of adjunct BLT on the subjective experience of sleep quality of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) inpatients. METHODS A randomized controlled trial was undertaken with 100 MDD consecutively admitted inpatients on consistent antidepressant regimens. Participants were divided into two groups; Group A, received pharmacotherapy augmented with BLT, Group B, received pharmacotherapy alone. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale assessed depressive symptoms, while the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) evaluated subjective sleep quality. RESULTS While both groups displayed enhanced depressive symptomatology, only Group A manifested significant improvement in perceived sleep quality (PSQI scores: A T0 8.05 ± 5.07 vs. T1 5.64 ± 3.64, p < 0.001; B T0 7.11 ± 3.17 vs. T1 6.50 ± 3.04, p = 0.072). LIMITATIONS Study limitations include its single-site design, lack of objective sleep measurement, and exclusive SSRI use, suggesting caution in generalizing findings. Further, the absence of placebo control and unmeasured expectancy effects may influence treatment outcomes. CONCLUSIONS These findings underscore the criticality of subjective sleep quality in clinical evaluations and highlight the potential of adjunct BLT as an augmentation therapeutic strategy to ameliorate sleep perception in MDD patients, emphasizing its potential role in enhancing therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Sleep fragmentation and daytime sleepiness often persist in patients with sleep apnea despite correctly administered continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Our proof-of-concept study tested the acceptability and efficacy of morning bright light therapy (BLT) to improve sleep, circadian rhythms, and CPAP-resistant daytime symptoms in patients with sleep apnea. METHODS In this within-subject crossover study, 14 individuals completed 4 weeks of BLT and sham BLT in randomized order. Outcomes included actigraphy-based objective sleep measures, sleepiness, depressive symptoms, and sleep-related functional impairment, analyzed with multilevel models. RESULTS Patients experienced greater reductions in wake after sleep onset and increased amplitude of rest-activity rhythms in a shorter photoperiod with BLT compared with sham. Patients also reported reductions in self-reported sleepiness and depressive symptoms with BLT compared with sham only during the early stages of treatment and shorter photoperiod. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest the potential for novel applications for existing chronotherapeutic interventions for improving symptoms and quality of life for those patients who experience residual symptoms with current available treatments. Abstract
Loss of control (LOC) is a hallmark feature of binge eating that is associated with significant distress and impairment. Despite the central role diurnal rhythms may play in the development and maintenance of LOC eating, diurnal patterns of LOC remain understudied and poorly characterised. We assessed the diurnal timing of LOC in a sample of females with bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder who participated in a study assessing the impact of bright light exposure on binge eating, hypothesising that higher ratings of LOC would be more likely to occur later in the day. Participants (N = 34) completed a 22-day protocol during which they provided LOC ratings six times daily. Kernel density estimates describing LOC ratings across times of day were compared using permutation tests of equality. Results demonstrated an evening shift in LOC, wherein higher LOC was more likely to occur later in the day and lower LOC was more likely to occur earlier in the day. This study is the first to clearly depict the phenomenon that the likelihood of experiencing higher LOC increases throughout the day, pointing to the potential role diurnal rhythms, such as disrupted appetitive rhythms or mood variations, may play in maintaining binge eating.

Abstract
Bright light exposure (BL) induces neurogenesis in the rat hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). We had previously conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) in which a 4-week period of BL in healthy participants resulted in increased volume of the left DG-head. This study aimed to investigate the effects of BL on the DG in patients with mood disorders. A 4-week RCT was conducted in which patients with mood disorders were randomly assigned to either a BL group (10,000 lx) or dim light exposure group (DL group; 50 lx). All patients underwent clinical assessment and magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and after the intervention. The study registration number is UMIN000019220. Our final sample included 24 patients (BL group, n = 12; DL group, n = 12). A significant effect of time and group was detected in the volumes of the left DG-head (F (1, 22) = 11.6, partial η2 = 0.35, p = 0.003) and left DG-total (left DG-total = left DG-head + left DG-body; [F (1, 22) = 6.5, partial η2 = 0.23, p = 0.02]). Additionally, the BL group demonstrated a significant increase in the volume of the left DG-head (95% CI: -5.4 to -1.6, d = 1.2, p = 0.002) and left DG-total (95% CI: -6.3 to -1.5, d = 1.06, p = 0.005) as well as a positive correlation between the percentage change in the volume of the left DG-total and the percentage change in the scores of the mood visual analog scale (r = 0.58, p = 0.04). In conclusion, our study results suggest that compared to DL, BL leads to a significantly greater increase in the left DG volume in patients with mood disorders. This increase in the left DG volume may be associated with mood improvement in the patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, light therapy has been tried for the treatment of depression and sleep in pregnancy or postnatal period women, but the results have been inconclusive. This meta-analysis is the first to systematically review the effects of light therapy on depression and sleep disturbances in women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. METHODS We searched for randomized controlled studies in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Biomedical Database up to January 2023. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to assess the efficacy of the outcome indicators. RESULTS Eight studies were eventually included in the analysis. The results showed that light therapy was more effective than the placebo group in terms of depression (SMD = .34, CI = .08-.61) and sleep (SMD = .64,95%CI = .28-1.00). Subgroup analysis could not explain the significant heterogeneity. There were no serious adverse effects in either the light therapy or placebo groups. CONCLUSIONS Light therapy could be considered an effective treatment for depression and sleep disturbances in women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. However, future high-quality trials with larger sample sizes are still needed.

Abstract
Youth is a vulnerable developmental period associated with an increased preference for eveningness and risk for developing psychopathology. Growing evidence suggests a link between eveningness and poorer mental health outcomes, but the findings in the current literature are inconsistent, and a comprehensive synthesis of evidence in this area remains lacking. This meta-analysis aimed to 1) synthesise the existing evidence on the association between circadian preference and mental health outcomes in youths and 2) explore potential sleep-related factors that may moderate the relationship between circadian preference and mental health outcomes. A systematic search of five electronic databases resulted in 81 observational studies included in the review. Eveningness was found to be significantly associated with general mental health (r = 0.20), mood-related disturbances (r = 0.17), and anxiety problems (r = 0.13). The qualitative review also identified that eveningness was associated with greater risks for psychotic symptoms and maladaptive eating behaviours. These findings highlighted the need to consider circadian preference in the clinical management of youth mental health problems. Further research is needed to examine the efficacy of a circadian-focused intervention in the context of youth mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Circadian rhythm disruptions are associated with binge eating, can be causal of negative mood, and may be corrected with bright light exposure. A subtype of individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders are characterized by combined high dietary restraint and negative affect. These individuals have higher eating disorder psychopathology and poorer treatment response. We aimed to test the targeted effects of morning bright light exposure on individuals with binge-spectrum eating disorders, hypothesizing significant reductions in binge eating for those characterized by high dietary restraint and negative affect. METHODS Participants (N = 34 females with binge-eating disorder and bulimia nervosa) used a morning bright light and normal light for 10 consecutive days each, in randomized order. They completed the Change in Eating Disorder Symptoms (CHEDS) scale at baseline, day 12 (when they switched lamps), and day 22. We conducted moderation analyses, clustering data by person, controlling for order, and examining the effect of light condition on binge eating according to baseline restraint and negative affect. RESULTS At high levels of combined dietary restraint and negative affect, participants experienced a reduction in binge eating and food preoccupation following exposure to morning bright light. There were no changes in restrictive eating, body preoccupation, body dissatisfaction, or body checking following exposure to morning bright light for these individuals. DISCUSSION These findings suggest that morning bright light may be a useful adjunct to empirically supported eating disorder treatments that target binge eating, especially for individuals characterized by the difficult to treat restraint/negative affect subtype. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE At high levels of combined dietary restraint and negative affect, participants with binge-spectrum eating disorders experienced a reduction in binge eating and food preoccupation following exposure to morning bright light. These findings suggest that morning bright light may be a useful adjunct to empirically supported eating disorder treatments that target binge eating, especially for individuals characterized by the difficult-to-treat restraint/negative affect subtype.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common side effect in cancer patients, possibly due to disrupted circadian rhythms. While bright light therapy (BLT) is known to modulate circadian rhythms, its role in mitigating CRF remains unclear. This study examined the impact of BLT on CRF and other related symptoms. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and SCOPUS databases were searched. The trials were selected according to the PRISMA guidelines. The severity and quality of CRF and related symptoms were investigated in post-BLT intervention. RESULTS Twelve trials involving 691 were included. BLT significantly reduced CRF (SMD = -0.92, 95% CI: -1.45 to -0.40, p < 0.00001, I2 = 90%) and insomnia (SMD = -2.80, 95% CI: -4.61 to -0.98, I2 = 0%). Subgroup analyzes were performed based on various factors including light illuminance and intervention duration. BLT was found to be effective in both preventing and treating CRF, though it did not significantly enhance sleep quality, depression, and quality of life (QoL). CONCLUSION BLT is a promising intervention for managing CRF in cancer patients. Its efficacy in improving sleep quality, and insomnia, reducing depression, and enhancing QoL requires further exploration. A 4-week BLT intervention with ≥10,000 lx is recommended for preventing and treating CRF, with longer or less intense interventions also showing effectiveness. Otherwise, BLT exhibited minimal adverse effects.

Abstract
Those with a negative experience of psychosocial stress during the early stage of life not only have a high susceptibility of the psychiatric disorder in all phases of their life span, but they also demonstrate more severe symptoms and poorer response to treatment compared to those without a history of early-life stress. The interventions targeted to early-life stress may improve the effectiveness of treating and preventing psychiatric disorders. Brain regions associated with mood and cognition develop rapidly and own heightened plasticity during adolescence. So, manipulating nonpharmacological interventions in fewer side effects and higher acceptance during adolescence, which is a probable window of opportunity, may ameliorate or even reverse the constantly deteriorating impact of early-life stress. The present article reviews animal and people studies about adolescent nonpharmacological interventions for early-life stress. We aim to discuss whether those adolescent nonpharmacological interventions can promote individuals' psychological health who expose to early-life stress.

Abstract
Coercion in psychiatry is associated mainly with involuntary admissions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between hospital admissions of patients suffering from affective and schizophrenic disorders and seasonality. A systematic literature search using PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar was conducted, including studies with affective and schizophrenia disorder admissions, published from October 1992 to August 2020. A total of 31 studies were included in the review. Four broad severe mental illness admission categories were identified regarding seasonality: affective disorders, schizophrenia disorders, involuntary admission affective disorders and involuntary admission schizophrenia disorders. There was clear and strong evidence for spring and summer peaks for severe mental illness admissions; data provided for age, gender and involuntary admissions was limited. Seasonality may have a significant effect on the onset and exacerbation of psychopathology of severe mental illness and should be considered as a risk factor in psychiatric admissions, violence and the risk of mental health coercion. A better understanding of the impact of seasonality on severe mental illness will help professionals to provide the best practices in mental health services in order to reduce and prevent psychiatric hospitalizations (especially involuntary admissions) resulting in further coercive measures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, mood, and sleep disturbance. Pharmacological treatments have modest efficacy and are associated with negative side effects, and alternative approaches are needed. Morning bright light treatment may assist in the management of fibromyalgia as it can reduce depressive symptoms, improve sleep, and advance circadian timing. METHODS Sixty people with fibromyalgia (58 women, mean age 41.8 ± 13.3 years) were enrolled in a study comparing 4 weeks of a 1-hour daily morning bright light treatment (active treatment) to a morning dim light treatment (comparison treatment). Both light treatments included behavioral procedures to stabilize sleep timing. The morning bright light treatment was expected to produce larger improvements in pain and function than the dim light treatment and larger improvements in potential mediators (mood, sleep, and circadian timing). RESULTS Both the bright and dim light treatment groups achieved significant but similar levels of improvement in pain intensity, pain interference, physical function, depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbance. Overall, the sample on average displayed a clinically meaningful improvement in the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire-Revised score (mean reduction of 11.2 points), comparable to that reported following physical exercise treatments. Minimal side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate that the effects of a morning bright light treatment did not exceed those of a comparison dim light treatment; yet the changes on average in both conditions revealed clinically meaningful improvements. Future research is warranted to identify what elements of this trial may have contributed to the observed effects.

Abstract
Social restriction measures (SRM) implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic led to a reduction in time spent outdoors (TSO). The aim of this study was to describe TSO and evaluate its association with sleep outcomes, optimism, happiness and health-status before and during SRM. Two online surveys were conducted in 2017 (N = 1004) and 2020, during SRM (N = 1010), in samples representative of the age, sex and region of the Austrian population. Information on the duration of TSO, sleep, optimism, happiness and health-status was collected. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models were used to study the association of TSO with chronic insomnia, short sleep, late chronotype, optimism, happiness and self-rated health-status. The mean TSO was 3.6 h (SD: 2.18) in 2017 and 2.6 h (SD: 1.87) during times of SRM. Men and participants who were older, married or in a partnership and lived in a rural area reported longer TSO. Participants who spent less time outdoors were more likely to report short sleep or a late chronotype in both surveys and, in 2020, also chronic insomnia. Less TSO was associated with lower happiness and optimism levels and poor health-status. Our findings suggest that TSO may be a protective factor for sleep, mood and health, particularly during stressful and uncertain times.

Migraine-a primary headache-has circadian and circannual rhythms in the onset of attacks. The circadian and circannual rhythms involve the hypothalamus, which is strongly associated with pain processing in migraines. Moreover, the role of melatonin in circadian rhythms has been implied in the pathophysiology of migraines. However, the prophylactic effect of melatonin in migraines is controversial. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has recently attracted attention in the pathophysiology and treatment of migraines. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP)-a neuropeptide identical to CGRP-is a potential therapeutic target after CGRP. PACAP is involved in the regulation of circadian entrainment to light. This review provides an overview of circadian and circannual rhythms in the hypothalamus and describes the relationship between migraines and the molecular and cellular neurobiology of circadian and circannual rhythms. Furthermore, the potential clinical applications of PACAP are presented.

Abstract
Drowsy driving is a common, but underestimated phenomenon in terms of associated risks as it often results in crashes causing fatalities and serious injuries. It is a challenging task to alert or reduce the driver's drowsy state using non-invasive techniques. In this study, a drowsiness reduction strategy has been developed and analyzed using exposure to different light colors and recording the corresponding electrical and biological brain activities. 31 subjects were examined by dividing them into 2 classes, a control group, and a healthy group. Fourteen EEG and 42 fNIRS channels were used to gather neurological data from two brain regions (prefrontal and visual cortices). Experiments shining 3 different colored lights have been carried out on them at certain times when there is a high probability to get drowsy. The results of this study show that there is a significant increase in HbO of a sleep-deprived participant when he is exposed to blue light. Similarly, the beta band of EEG also showed an increased response. However, the study found that there is no considerable increase in HbO and beta band power in the case of red and green light exposures. In addition to that, values of other physiological signals acquired such as heart rate, eye blinking, and self-reported Karolinska Sleepiness Scale scores validated the findings predicted by the electrical and biological signals. The statistical significance of the signals achieved has been tested using repeated measures ANOVA and t-tests. Correlation scores were also calculated to find the association between the changes in the data signals with the corresponding changes in the alertness level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Circadian (24-h) rhythms are important regulators in physiology and disease, but systemic disease may disrupt circadian rhythmicity. Heart failure (HF) is a systemic disease affecting hormonal regulation. We investigate whether HF affects the rhythmic expression of melatonin and cortisol, main endocrine products of the central clock, and cardiac-specific troponin in patients. We corroborate the functionality of the peripheral clock directly in the organs of translational models, inaccessible in human participants. METHODS We included 46 HF patients (71.7% male, median age of 60 years, NYHA class II (32.6%) or III (67.4%), ischemic cardiomyopathy (43.5%), comorbidities: diabetes 21.7%, atrial fibrillation 30.4%), and 24 matched controls. Blood was collected at seven time-points during a 24-h period (totalling 320 HF and 167 control samples) for melatonin, cortisol, and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) measurements after which circadian rhythms were assessed through cosinor analyses, both on the individual and the group level. Next, we analysed peripheral circadian clock functionality using cosinor analysis in male animal HF models: nocturnal mice and diurnal zebrafish, based on expression of core clock genes in heart, kidneys, and liver, every 4 h during a 24-h period in a light/darkness synchronised environment. FINDINGS Melatonin and cortisol concentrations followed a physiological 24-h pattern in both patients and controls. For melatonin, acrophase occurred during the night for both groups, with significantly decreased amplitude (median 5.2 vs 8.8, P = 0.0001) and circadian variation ([maximum]/[minimum]) in heart failure patients. For cortisol, mesor showed a significant increase for HF patients (mean 331.9 vs 275.1, P = 0.017) with a difference of 56.8 (95% CI 10.3-103.3) again resulting in a relatively lower variation: median 3.9 vs 6.3 (P = 0.0058). A nocturnal blood pressure dip was absent in 77.8% of HF patients. Clock gene expression profiles (Bmal, Clock, Per, Cry) were similar and with expected phase relations in animal HF models and controls, demonstrating preserved peripheral clock functionality in HF. Furthermore, oscillations in diurnal zebrafish were expectedly in opposite phases to those of nocturnal mice. Concordantly, cTnT concentrations in HF patients revealed significant circadian oscillations. INTERPRETATION Central clock output is dampened in HF patients while the molecular peripheral clock, as confirmed in animal models, remains intact. This emphasises the importance of taking timing into account in research and therapy for HF, setting the stage for another dimension of diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic approaches. Abstract
The circadian system plays a key role in the sleep-wake cycle. A mismatch between the behavioral timing of sleep and the circadian timing of sleepiness/alertness can contribute to insomnia. Patients who report primarily difficulty falling asleep or early morning awakenings may benefit from circadian interventions administered adjunctively to cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia. Specific circadian interventions that clinicians may consider include bright light therapy, scheduled dim light, blue-blocking glasses, and melatonin. Implementation of these interventions differs depending on the patient's insomnia subtype. Further, careful attention must be paid to the timing of these interventions to ensure they are administered correctly.

Abstract
Bright light therapy (BLT) is a promising non-pharmacological treatment for a range of psychiatric conditions. The goal of this review was to provide a comprehensive overview of the efficacy of BLT across mental and behavioral illnesses. Using systematic umbrella review methodology, we searched Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating BLT for any mental or behavioral illness from the date of inception until March 2021. Review quality was assessed using the AMSTAR 2 tool and summary efficacy data were extracted from recent reviews. Of 792 unique records, 67 systematic reviews were included which targeted a range of disorders related to mood, neurocognition, sleep, and eating. Recent meta-analyses targeting seasonal or non-seasonal depression found that BLT outperformed light-related control conditions. Reviews of other disorders identified few RCTs and generally did not support the efficacy of BLT for various outcomes. Overall, the extant literature supports the efficacy of BLT for seasonal and non-seasonal depression, although higher quality systematic reviews are needed to increase confidence in these findings. There was no specific funding for this review, and it was preregistered on Prospero (ID: CRD42021240751).

Abstract
To clarify the effect of monochromatic light on circadian rhythms of plasma insulin level and pancreatic clock gene expression and its mechanism, 216 newly hatched chicks were divided into three groups (intact, sham operation and pinealectomy) and were raised under white (WL), red (RL), green (GL) or blue (BL) light for 21 days. Their plasma and pancreas were sampled at six four-hour intervals. For circadian rhythm analysis, measurements of plasma melatonin, insulin, and clock gene expression (cClock, cBmal1, cBmal2, cCry1, cCry2, cPer2, and cPer3) were made. Plasma melatonin, insulin, and the pancreatic clock gene all expressed rhythmically in the presence of monochromatic light. Red light reduced the mesor and amplitude of plasma melatonin in comparison to green light. The mesor and amplitude of the pancreatic clock gene in chickens exposed to red light were dramatically reduced, which is consistent with the drop in plasma melatonin levels. Red light, on the other hand, clearly raised the level of plasma insulin via raising the expression of cVamp2, but not cInsulin. After the pineal gland was removed, the circadian expressions of plasma melatonin and pancreatic clock gene were significantly reduced, but the plasma insulin level and the pancreatic cVamp2 expression were obviously increased, resulting in the disappearance of differences in insulin level and cVamp2 expression in the monochromatic light groups. Therefore, we hypothesize that melatonin may be crucial in the effect of monochromatic light on the circadian rhythm of plasma insulin level by influencing the expression of clock gene in chicken pancreas.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Because light can regulate sleep rhythms, numerous studies have investigated whether light therapy can improve sleep disorders in older people, but its efficacy remains controversial. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine and summarize current evidence about the efficacy of light therapy to improve sleep for older people in residential long-term care. DESIGN Systematic review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Older people living in long-term care settings. METHODS Systematic searches were conducted in the databases PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, EMBASE, CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Science and Technology Journal Database, WanFang, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and in reference lists within relevant articles. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they evaluated light therapy for older people with sleep disorders in long-term care settings. RESULTS This systematic review includes 21 articles, summarizing light therapy with different durations and intensities. The light intervention was typically administered between 7:00 and 12:00 am for 30-120 minutes. The interventions lasted from 1 week to several months, and the intensity of the light intervention usually ranged from 2500 to 10,000 lux. Short-term exposure (30-60 minutes) with high light levels (≥10,000 lux), relatively long-term exposure (1-2 hours) with moderate light levels (2500-10,000 lux), or long-term exposure (1-4 hours or full day) with low light levels (≤2500 lux) were associated with improved sleep indicators for older people in long-term care settings. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS The efficacy of light therapy in long-term care settings may be affected by the duration of exposure, time and length of intervention, intensity of light, and equipment used to administer the therapy. Further research must be conducted to optimize light therapy parameters. Large, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to deepen our understanding of the effects of light therapy on sleep in older people living in long-term care settings.

Abstract
Janus kinase/signal transduction and transcription activation (JAK/STAT) pathways were originally thought to be intracellular signaling pathways that mediate cytokine signals in mammals. Existing studies show that the JAK/STAT pathway regulates the downstream signaling of numerous membrane proteins such as such as G-protein-associated receptors, integrins and so on. Mounting evidence shows that the JAK/STAT pathways play an important role in human disease pathology and pharmacological mechanism. The JAK/STAT pathways are related to aspects of all aspects of the immune system function, such as fighting infection, maintaining immune tolerance, strengthening barrier function, and cancer prevention, which are all important factors involved in immune response. In addition, the JAK/STAT pathways play an important role in extracellular mechanistic signaling and might be an important mediator of mechanistic signals that influence disease progression, immune environment. Therefore, it is important to understand the mechanism of the JAK/STAT pathways, which provides ideas for us to design more drugs targeting diseases based on the JAK/STAT pathway. In this review, we discuss the role of the JAK/STAT pathway in mechanistic signaling, disease progression, immune environment, and therapeutic targets.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the efficacy and safety of blue-light therapy in seasonal and non-seasonal major depressive disorder (MDD), by comparison to active and inactive control conditions. METHODS We searched Web of Science, EMBASE, Medline, PsycInfo, and Clinicaltrials.gov through January 17, 2022, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using search terms for blue/blue-enhanced, light therapy, and depression/seasonal affective disorder. Two independent reviewers extracted data. The primary outcome was the difference in endpoint scores on the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale - Seasonal Affective Disorder (SIGH-SAD) or the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale with Atypical Depression Supplement (SIGH-ADS) between blue light and comparison conditions. Secondary outcomes were response (≥ 50% improvement from baseline to endpoint on a depression scale) and remission rates (endpoint score in the remission range). RESULTS Of 582 articles retrieved, we included nine RCTs (n = 347 participants) assessing blue-light therapy. Seven studies had participants with seasonal MDD and two studies included participants with non-seasonal MDD. Four studies compared blue light to an inactive light condition (efficacy studies), and five studies compared it to an active condition (comparison studies). For the primary outcome, a meta-analysis with random-effects models found no evidence for the efficacy of blue-light conditions compared to inactive conditions (mean difference [MD] = 2.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.28 to 6.14, P = 0.20); however, blue-light also showed no differences compared to active conditions (MD = -0.11; 95% CI, -2.38 to 2.16, P = 0.93). There were no significant differences in response and remission rates between blue-light conditions and inactive or active light conditions. Blue-light therapy was overall well-tolerated. CONCLUSIONS The efficacy of blue-light therapy in the treatment of seasonal and non-seasonal MDD remains unproven. Future trials should be of longer duration, include larger sample sizes, and attempt to better standardize the parameters of light therapy.

Abstract
Seasonal changes in day length (photoperiod) affect numerous physiological functions. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)-paraventricular nucleus (PVN) axis plays a key role in processing photoperiod-related information. Seasonal variations in SCN and PVN neurotransmitter expression have been observed in humans and animal models. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the SCN-PVN network responds to altered photoperiod is unknown. Here, we show in mice that neuromedin S (NMS) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) neurons in the SCN display photoperiod-induced neurotransmitter plasticity. In vivo recording of calcium dynamics revealed that NMS neurons alter PVN network activity in response to winter-like photoperiod. Chronic manipulation of NMS neurons is sufficient to induce neurotransmitter switching in PVN neurons and affects locomotor activity. Our findings reveal previously unidentified molecular adaptations of the SCN-PVN network in response to seasonality and the role for NMS neurons in adjusting hypothalamic function to day length via a coordinated multisynaptic neurotransmitter switching affecting behavior.

Abstract
Salient sensory stimuli are perceived by the brain, which guides both the timing and outcome of behaviors in a context-dependent manner. Light is such a stimulus, which is used in treating mood disorders often associated with a dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress axis. Relationships between the emotional valence of light and the hypothalamus, and how they interact to exert brain-wide impacts remain unclear. Employing larval zebrafish with analogous hypothalamic systems to mammals, we show in free-swimming animals that hypothalamic corticotropin releasing factor (CRFHy) neurons promote dark avoidance, and such role is not shared by other hypothalamic peptidergic neurons. Single-neuron projection analyses uncover processes extended by individual CRFHy neurons to multiple targets including sensorimotor and decision-making areas. In vivo calcium imaging uncovers a complex and heterogeneous response of individual CRFHy neurons to the light or dark stimulus, with a reduced overall sum of CRF neuronal activity in the presence of light. Brain-wide calcium imaging under alternating light/dark stimuli further identifies distinct and distributed photic response neuronal types. CRFHy neuronal ablation increases an overall representation of light in the brain and broadly enhances the functional connectivity associated with an exploratory brain state. These findings delineate brain-wide photic perception, uncover a previously unknown role of CRFHy neurons in regulating the perception and emotional valence of light, and suggest that light therapy may alleviate mood disorders through reducing an overall sum of CRF neuronal activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronobiological processes play a critical role in the initial manifestation and course of affective disorders. Chronotherapeutic agents aim to improve sleep-wake cycle disturbances and affective symptoms by modulating the chronobiological neuronal circuitry. OBJECTIVE To review the different chronotherapeutic procedures, the current evidence situation and recommendations for clinical applications. METHOD Narrative review. RESULTS Chronotherapeutic interventions for patients with affective disorders can be nonpharmacological, e.g., light therapy, sleep deprivation, sleep phase advance and dark therapy, pharmacological in the form of melatonin and psychological consisting of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia modified for patients with bipolar disorder. Nearly all these interventions show promising data regarding their efficacy in acute depressive or manic episodes or as maintenance therapy. For melatonin, there is less evidence for improvement of affective symptoms than for stabilizing the sleep-wake cycle. Some interventions are well-suited for an outpatient setting, e.g., light therapy, dark therapy and psychotherapy, while others, such as triple chronotherapy consisting of sleep deprivation, sleep phase advance and light therapy, are more suited for in-patient treatment. CONCLUSION Chronotherapeutic interventions are versatile in their application and can be combined with each other and used concomitantly with classical psychopharmacotherapy. With a benign side effect profile and good evidence for efficacy, they could play an important role in the treatment of affective disorders; however, this potential is used too rarely in the clinical context.

Abstract
Background
Exposure to trauma can result in various mental health disorders including anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although psychotherapies and pharmacotherapies exist for the treatment of these disorders, many individuals fail to receive treatment and among those who do, many remain symptomatic. Therefore, it is critical to continue developing new interventions for traumatic stress that target underlying mechanisms of pathology and offer a safe and acceptable alternative to current treatments. Morning light treatment has good potential as a novel non-invasive, low risk treatment for traumatic stress. Evidence suggests that morning light may improve traumatic stress by reducing reactivity in the amygdala, a brain region implicated in the pathophysiology of PTSD and anatomically linked to circadian photoreceptors in the eye.
Methods
In this study, we aim to establish a significant dose-response relationship between duration of morning light treatment and reduction in amygdala reactivity among individuals with traumatic stress symptoms (NCT# 04117347). Using a transdiagnostic approach, sixty-six individuals with a history of a DSM-5 criterion A trauma and traumatic stress symptoms will be recruited to participate in a 5-week study. Participants will be randomized across three treatment arms based on morning light treatment duration: 15-minutes, 30-minutes, or 60-minutes of light treatment per day for four weeks. To evaluate amygdala activity, participants will undergo fMRI at pre-treatment, mid-treatment, and post-treatment. Participants will also complete clinical assessments and self-report measures of PTSD, depression, and anxiety at pre-treatment, mid-treatment, and post-treatment.
Discussion
Morning light therapy may be an acceptable, feasible, and effective treatment for individuals suffering from traumatic stress. Identifying mechanistically relevant targets, and the doses needed to impact them, are critical steps in developing this new treatment approach for the sequelae of traumatic stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Uncertainties and difficulties associated with the current treatment modalities for perinatal depression (PND) may cause some mothers to avoid treatment. Raising awareness about the effectiveness and safety of bright light therapy (BLT) may help to alleviate the challenges of PND. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of BLT versus placebo in PND. METHOD A total of 30 women who were either pregnant or in first year postpartum and diagnosed with major depressive disorder were enrolled; 23 completed the study. Patients were randomly assigned to either the BLT (10,000 lux) or placebo (<500 lux) group. BLT and placebo light were applied for 45 min in the morning every day for a 3-week period. The Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D), and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were administered weekly to evaluate response and remission rates and depression scores. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of baseline depression scores. At the end of the study, the response rates assessed according to MADRS were 75% for BLT and 18.2% for placebo (p = .006), and remission rates were 41.7% vs. 0% (p = .016), respectively. There was no significant difference between the groups (p > .05) in terms of treatment-related side effects. The main limitation of this study is its small sample size, which limits the generalizability of the study's findings. CONCLUSION The results indicate that BLT is more effective than placebo and is reliable in terms of side effects in PND patients. In order to expand the use of BLT in PND, new studies with larger sample sizes are needed.

Abstract
Many patients under treatment for mood disorders, in particular patients with bipolar mood disorders, experience episodes of mood switching from one state to another. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanism of mood switching, spontaneously or induced by drug treatment. Animal models have also been used to test the role of psychotropic drugs in the switching of mood states. We examine the possible relationship between the pharmacology of psychotropic drugs and their reported incidents of induced mood switching, with reference to the various hypotheses of mechanisms of mood switching.

Abstract
RATIONALE Bright light treatment (BLT) is an efficacious antidepressant intervention, but its mechanism of action is not well understood. Antidepressant drugs acutely affect how emotional information is processed, pushing the brain to prioritise positive relative to negative input. Whether BLT could have a similar effect is not known to date. OBJECTIVE To test whether BLT acutely influences emotional information processing similar to antidepressant drugs, using an established healthy volunteer assay. METHODS Following a double-blind, parallel-group design, 49 healthy volunteers (18-65 years, 26 females) were randomly allocated to 60-min BLT (≥ 10,000 lux) or sham-placebo treatment early in the morning in autumn/winter. Immediately after treatment, emotional information processing was assessed using the Oxford Emotional Test Battery, a validated set of behavioural tasks tapping into emotional information processing in different cognitive domains. Participants also completed questionnaires before and after treatment to assess changes in subjective state. RESULTS The BLT group did not show significantly more positively biased emotional information processing compared to the placebo group (p > 0.05 for all measures). After adjustment for pre-treatment scores, there were also no significant post-treatment differences between groups in subjective state (p > 0.05 for all measures). CONCLUSIONS BLT did not show immediate effects on emotional information processing in an established healthy volunteer assay. Thus, BLT might exert its clinical effects through a different (cognitive) mechanism than other antidepressant interventions. Future studies should corroborate this finding including clinical populations and more intensive treatment regimes, and control for potential chronobiological effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the circadian rhythms of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) pre-treatment and post-treatment to analyse possible influencing factors. METHODS In this study, we recruited 154 patients in the acute phase of MDD from 10 psychiatric centers in the province. The patients were divided into a morning chronotype group (16-41 points), an intermediate chronotype group (42-58 points) and an evening chronotype group (59-86 points), according to the total scores obtained from the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ). They were treated randomly with antidepressants, either selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or agomelatine, for 12 weeks and were evaluated using the MEQ, the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), the Hamilton anxiety scale, the Snaith-Hamilton pleasure scale (SHAPS), the multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI-20) and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index at the baseline and then at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. The results were analysed by Logistic regression analysis and repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS The baseline detection rates for the evening, intermediate and morning types were 14.93%, 56.5% and 28.57%, respectively. HAMD-17 scores were significantly lower at weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12 after treatment in patients with different concurrent phenotypes compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). There were significant differences in gender, age, body mass index, whether depression was first-episode, type of medication, baseline-MEQ and baseline-SHAPS in the chronotype change group compared with the post-treatment chronotype unchanged group (p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that medication type (P=0.047), baseline MEQ (P=0.001) and baseline SHAPS (P=0.001) were risk factors for improvement in circadian rhythm after treatment for depression. CONCLUSION Circadian rhythm disturbances can be adjusted to a normal pattern with effective antidepressant therapy. The medication type, baseline MEQ and baseline SHAPS scores were the influencing factors for the recovery of circadian rhythm disorders.

Abstract
Background: Symptoms of insomnia are common in new mothers and have been associated with a range of negative maternal and child outcomes. Despite this, interventions to improve maternal postpartum sleep remain scarce. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Light Dark Therapy (LDT) represent two promising interventions for insomnia symptoms and associated daytime consequences such as fatigue. This randomised controlled trial examines whether CBT and LDT improve maternal insomnia symptoms as the primary outcome and maternal sleep disturbance, mood, fatigue, and sleepiness as secondary outcomes. This protocol paper outlines the development, design, and implementation of the trial. Methods: Participants are an Australian community-sample of 90 first-time mothers who are 4-12 months postpartum with self-reported symptoms of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index scores ≥ 8). Exclusion criteria include current severe sleep/psychiatric disorders, unsettled infant sleep behaviour, sleep-affecting medication use, and photosensitivity. Eligible women are randomised into a CBT (strategies targeting sleep, worries, fatigue, and relaxation), LDT, or a treatment-as-usual control condition. Interventions are therapist-assisted and personalised through two telephone calls and include a series of automated intervention emails delivered over 6 weeks. Primary and secondary outcomes are assessed at four time points: baseline, intervention mid-point, post-intervention, and 1-month post-intervention. Discussion: If found effective, these interventions could represent efficacious, safe, and inexpensive treatments for improving postpartum insomnia and mitigate its negative impact on maternal well-being. Interventions tested are highly scalable and can be integrated into postpartum care and made available to the broader community. Abstract
Simple Summary Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease that manifests as motor dysfunction and nonmotor symptoms (NMSs). Apart from motor symptoms, NMSs include sleep disorders, neuropsychiatric problems, and cognitive impairment, which negatively influence patients’ daily lives and caregivers. Disturbances of the sleep cycle also worsen overall health, causing dysregulation of cortisol and melatonin secretion. Furthermore, bright light therapy (BLT) is a well-known treatment for circadian rhythm sleep disorders, seasonal affective disorders, and dementia-related sleep disturbances under the regulation of circadian rhythm by melatonin, a chronological pacemaker. BLT is also applied to treat depressive symptoms and bipolar disorder through unknown mechanisms. The present study, at first, conducted a literature review, which found that a few non-controlled studies demonstrated improvements in motor symptoms and NMSs in PD. Secondly, the present study performed a meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials which treated the PD patients with BLT. The results revealed that BLT nonsignificantly alleviated symptoms of depression and sleep disorders in patients with PD. However, the inconsistency between BLT protocols, such as varied timing, dosages, and treatment durations, may render BLT’s efficacy challenging to demonstrate, and future RCTs must be obtained. Abstract Sleep disorders and depression are significant nonmotor symptoms (NMSs) of Parkinson disease (PD). However, few effective, evidence-proven medical treatments are available for alleviating these symptoms. Bright light therapy (BLT) is a well-established treatment for circadian rhythm sleep disorders and seasonal affective disorder. The present study conducted a literature review for the effect of BLT on PD, especially a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We searched for studies using the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. The major outcomes were the effects on sleep and depression. The effect on motor symptoms was also analyzed as a secondary outcome. This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020204454). Six studies were included in the literature review only, and the other five RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Despite the positive effects of BLT on PD patients, which were demonstrated in noncontrolled studies, in the meta-analysis of the RCTs, BLT did not significantly improve the depressive symptoms (standardized mean difference (SMD): −0.15, 95% confidence interval (CI): −0.48 to 0.17, p = 0.36) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) (SMD: −0.12, 95% CI: −0.49 to 0.25, p = 0.53) in PD patients. Regarding motor symptoms, no significant beneficial effects were conferred (SMD: −0.11, 95% CI: −0.44 to 0.21, p = 0.49). In conclusion, BLT did not significantly alleviate depression and sleepiness. The inconsistency between BLT protocols, such as the varied timing, dosages, and treatment durations, may render BLT’s efficacy difficult to demonstrate. The small effect size obtained from the present meta-analysis indicates that future RCTs are necessary, for which BLT protocols are standardized and more patients are enrolled to determine whether a significant therapeutic benefit was conferred.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bright light therapy (BLT) has been used for treating seasonal affective disorder, depression and bipolar depression. However, it's precise mechanism remains unclear. Bright light exposure (BL) induces neurogenesis in the adult rat hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). We hypothesized that BL may induce neurogenesis in the human DG as well. METHOD A 4-week randomized controlled trial study was conducted, where healthy participants were randomly assigned to a BL group (10,000 lux) or dim light exposure group (DL group; 50 lux). Magnetic resonance imaging was performed at baseline and after 4 weeks. Longitudinal hippocampal subfield segmentation was generated via the FreeSurfer 7.1.1 hippocampal subfields module to evaluate volume of bilateral granule cell and molecular layer of the DG-head and -body. RESULTS Our final sample size was 20, which consisted of BL group (n = 10) and DL group (n = 10). After age and sex adjustment, significant effects of time and group were detected in the left DG-head volume (p = 0.04). In the BL group, the left DG-head volume significantly increased (p = 0.004), whereas no significant volumetric change was observed in the DL group. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that 4-week BL significantly increased left DG-head volume in healthy participants. Thus, neurogenesis might be induced by BL in the human DG, which is a completely new mechanism of BLT.

Abstract
Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, predicted to be the leading cause of disease burden by the next decade. There is great deal of emphasis on the central origin and potential therapeutics of depression whereby the symptomatology of depression has been interpreted and treated as brain generated dysfunctions filtering down to the periphery. This top-down approach has found strong support from clinical work and basic neuroscientific research. Nevertheless, despite great advances in our knowledge of the etiology and therapeutics of depression, success in treatment is still by no means assured.. As a consequence, a wide net has been cast by both clinicians and researchers in search of more efficient therapies for mood disorders. As a complementary view, the present integrative review advocates approaching mood and depression from the opposite perspective: a bottom-up view that starts from the periphery. Specifically, evidence is provided to show that sensory stimulation via the visual, auditory, olfactory and gustatory systems can modulate depression. The review shows how -depending on several parameters- unisensory stimulation via these modalities can ameliorate or aggravate depressive symptoms. Moreover, the review emphasizes the bidirectional relationship between sensory stimulation and depression. Just as peripheral stimulation can modulate depression, depression in turn affects-and in most cases impairs-sensory reception. Furthermore, the review suggests that combined use of multisensory stimulation may have synergistic ameliorative effects on depressive symptoms over and above what has so far been documented for unisensory stimulation.

Abstract
Background: Subthreshold depression (SD) is considered to be the precursor stage of major depression, which is correlated with functional impairment and increased suicide rate. Although there are multiple therapies for the treatment of SD, the comparison and efficacy of various methods has yet to be evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of different therapies by performing a Bayesian network meta-analysis. Methods: We searched eight databases on April 3, 2021. Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Beck Depression Inventory scale (BDI), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Kessler Screening Scale for Psychological Distress (K-6) were used as efficacy outcomes. This Bayesian network meta-analysis used a fixed-effects model. Findings: Twenty-one randomized controlled trials involving 5,048 participants were included in this study. The results suggested that electroacupuncture (MD −12.00, 95% CrI −15.00, −10.00), conventional acupuncture plus wheat-grain moxibustion (MD −9.70, 95% CrI −14.00, −5.30), and the Chinese traditional peripateticism pill plus group counseling (MD −9.00, 95% CrI −11.00, −6.70) had better efficacy than the control group (CG) in improving CES-D. For BDI outcome, bright light therapy (MD −9.70, 95% CrI −13.00, −6.00), behavioral activation program (MD −5.70, 95% CrI −6.10, −5.40), and dim light therapy (MD −6.30, 95% CrI −10.00, −2.20) were better than the CG. Tai chi (MD −3.00, 95% CrI −4.00, −2.00) was better than CG for PHQ-9 outcomes. Telephone-based cognitive behavioral treatment (MD −2.50 95% CrI −2.70, −2.30) was better than the CG for K-6 scores. Conclusion: Our results suggest that electroacupuncture or bright light therapy appear to be the better choices in the treatment of SD. This study provide new insights into clinical treatment selection and may aid the development of guidelines for the management of SD.

Abstract
Simple Summary Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most frequently reported symptoms with prevalence rates of 25 to 60 percent in (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma survivors. Several (pilot) studies showed promising effects of light therapy to reduce CRF. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the short- and long-term efficacy of light therapy on CRF and associated symptoms in chronically fatigued (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma survivors. Eighty-three survivors were exposed to bright white light (intervention) and another 83 survivors were exposed to dim white light (comparison). Results showed that all participants, irrespective of light condition, reported reduced levels of fatigue after the completion of light therapy. Similar results were found for depression, sleep quality, and some aspects of quality of life. No effect was found on circadian rhythms or objectively assessed sleep. Therefore, it is important to further investigate which aspects of intervention are associated with the improvements observed after light therapy. Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the short- and long-term effects of light therapy on fatigue (primary outcome) and sleep quality, depression, anxiety, quality of life, and circadian rhythms (secondary outcomes) in survivors of (non-)Hodgkin lymphoma presenting with chronic cancer-related fatigue. Methods: We randomly assigned 166 survivors (mean survival 13 years) to a bright white light intervention (BWL) or dim white light comparison (DWL) group. Measurements were completed at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), at three (T2), and nine (T3) months follow-up. A mixed-effect modeling approach was used to compare linear and non-linear effects of time between groups. Results: There were no significant differences between BWL and DWL in the reduction in fatigue over time. Both BWL and DWL significantly (p < 0.001) improved fatigue levels during the intervention followed by a slight reduction in this effect during follow-up (EST0-T1 = −0.71; EST1-T3 = 0.15). Similar results were found for depression, sleep quality, and some aspects of quality of life. Light therapy had no effect on circadian rhythms. Conclusions: BWL was not superior in reducing fatigue compared to DWL in HL and DLBCL survivors. Remarkably, the total sample showed clinically relevant and persistent improvements on fatigue not commonly seen in longitudinal observational studies in these survivors.

Abstract
Light improves mood. The amygdala plays a critical role in regulating emotion, including fear-related responses. In rodents the amygdala receives direct light input from the retina, and light may play a role in fear-related learning. A direct effect of light on the amygdala represents a plausible mechanism of action for light’s mood-elevating effects in humans. However, the effect of light on activity in the amygdala in humans is not well understood. We examined the effect of passive dim-to-moderate white light exposure on activation of the amygdala in healthy young adults using the BOLD fMRI response (3T Siemens scanner; n = 23). Participants were exposed to alternating 30s blocks of light (10 lux or 100 lux) and dark (<1 lux), with each light intensity being presented separately. Light, compared with dark, suppressed activity in the amygdala. Moderate light exposure resulted in greater suppression of amygdala activity than dim light. Furthermore, functional connectivity between the amygdala and ventro-medial prefrontal cortex was enhanced during light relative to dark. These effects may contribute to light’s mood-elevating effects, via a reduction in negative, fear-related affect and enhanced processing of negative emotion.

Abstract
It is known that bipolar disorder and its lithium treatment involve the modulation of oxidative stress. Moreover, it has been observed that lithium's effects are isotope-dependent. Based on these findings, here we propose that lithium exerts its effects by influencing the recombination dynamics of a naturally occurring radical pair involving oxygen. We develop a simple model inspired by the radical-pair mechanism in cryptochrome in the context of avian magnetoreception and xenon-induced anesthesia. Our model reproduces the observed isotopic dependence in the lithium treatment of hyperactivity in rats. It predicts a magnetic-field dependence of the effectiveness of lithium, which provides one potential experimental test of our hypothesis. Our findings show that Nature might harness quantum entanglement for the brain's cognitive processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms and stress are common in adults with intellectual disabilities. Our aim was to explore long-term biological stress levels, assessed by hair cortisol (HairF) and cortisone (HairE) concentrations, in adults with intellectual disabilities and depressive symptoms and to investigate the effects of bright light therapy (BLT) on hair glucocorticoids. METHOD Scalp hair samples (n = 14) were retrospectively examined at baseline and post-BLT (10.000 and 300 lux). Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to measure hair glucocorticoids. RESULTS A significant correlation was found between baseline HairF and depression scores (r = .605, p = .028). Post-intervention HairE levels were significantly increased ([95% CI: 11.2-17.4 pg/mg], p = .003), in particular after dim light (300 lux) ([95% CI: 10.0-18.3 pg/mg], p = .020). CONCLUSIONS This study showed that retrospectively examining biological levels of stress in adults with intellectual disabilities seems a potentially promising and objective method to gain insight in the stress level of adults with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract
Abstract
Objective
Globally, mood disorders are highly prevalent, and are associated with increased morbidity and mortalities. Magnetic resonance imaging is widely used in the study of mood disorders. However, bibliometric analyses of the state of this field are lacking.
Methods
A literature search in the web of science core collection (WoSCC) for the period between 1945 and 2020 returned 3073 results. Data extracted from these publications include, publication year, journal names, countries of origin, institutions, author names and research areas. The bibliometric method, CiteSpace V and key words analysis were used to visualize the collaboration network and identify research trends, respectively.
Results
Since it was first reported in 1999, the use of magnetic resonance imaging in studies on mood disorders has been increasing. Biological psychiatry is the core journal that has extensively published on this topic, while the UNIV PITTSBURGH, USA, has the highest published papers on this topic. Keyword analysis indicated that studies on depression, bipolar disorders, and schizophrenia, with a focus on specific brain regions, including amygdala, prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex are key research topics.
Conclusion
Brain structure and network, sex differences, and treatment-associated brain changes are key topics of future research.

Abstract
Blue wavelength light has been used successfully as a treatment method for certain mood disorders, but, the underlying mechanisms behind the mood enhancing effects of light remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of a single dose of 30 min of blue wavelength light (n = 17) vs. amber wavelength light (n = 12) exposure in a sample of healthy adults on subsequent resting-state functional and directed connectivity, and associations with changes in state affect. Individuals who received blue vs. amber wavelength light showed greater positive connectivity between the right amygdala and a region within the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In addition, using granger causality, the findings showed that individuals who received blue wavelength light displayed greater bidirectional information flow between these two regions relative to amber light. Furthermore, the strength of amygdala-DLPFC functional connectivity was associated with greater decreases in negative mood for the blue, but not the amber light condition. Blue light exposure may positively influence mood by modulating greater information flow between the amygdala and the DLPFC, which may result in greater engagement of cognitive control strategies that are needed to perceive and regulate arousal and mood.

Abstract
The nearly ubiquitous expression of endogenous 24 h oscillations known as circadian rhythms regulate the timing of physiological functions in the body. These intrinsic rhythms are sensitive to external cues, known as zeitgebers, which entrain the internal biological processes to the daily environmental changes in light, temperature, and food availability. Light directly entrains the master clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which lies in the hypothalamus of the brain and is responsible for synchronizing internal rhythms. However, recent evidence underscores the importance of other hypothalamic nuclei in regulating several essential rhythmic biological functions. These extra-SCN hypothalamic nuclei also express circadian rhythms, suggesting distinct regions that oscillate either semi-autonomously or independent of SCN innervation. Concurrently, the extra-SCN hypothalamic nuclei are also sensitized to fluctuations in nutrient and hormonal signals. Thus, food intake acts as another powerful entrainer for the hypothalamic oscillators' mediation of energy homeostasis. Ablation studies and genetic mouse models with perturbed extra-SCN hypothalamic nuclei function reveal their critical downstream involvement in an array of functions including metabolism, thermogenesis, food consumption, thirst, mood and sleep. Large epidemiological studies of individuals whose internal circadian cycle is chronically disrupted reveal that disruption of our internal clock is associated with an increased risk of obesity and several neurological diseases and disorders. In this review, we discuss the profound role of the extra-SCN hypothalamic nuclei in rhythmically regulating and coordinating body wide functions.

Abstract
In relation to human health and functioning, light, or more specifically optical radiation, plays many roles, beyond allowing vision. These may be summarized as: regulation of circadian rhythms; consequences of direct exposure to the skin; and more indirect effects on well-being and functioning, also related to lifestyle and contact with natural and urban environments. Impact on mental health is relevant for any of these specifications and supports a clinical use of this knowledge for the treatment of psychiatric conditions, such as depression or anxiety, somatic symptom disorder, and others, with reference to light therapy in particular. The scope of this narrative review is to provide a summary of recent findings and evidence on the regulating functions of light on human beings’ biology, with a specific focus on mental health, its prevention and care.
