Abstract
Background Although a large body of research suggests that social networks from family and friends are important factors in protecting the mental health of older adults, we know little about the mediating and moderating mechanisms behind this relationship. Using China as an example, this study aims to investigate a comprehensive model that includes social networks, loneliness, Internet use, and mental health outcomes in the older population. Methods We analyzed data from 7,648 Chinese older people over 60 using the 2018 CLASS survey. We studied how various social networks affect their mental health. Using SPSS's PROCESS macro, we first employed descriptive statistics to examine the characteristics of the participants and calculate the correlations of core variables. Then, we assessed whether loneliness mediated this relationship and tested the moderated mediation effect of Internet use. Our findings shed light on these complex dynamics. Results The statistics indicate a positive correlation between social networks and mental health. Furthermore, mediation models revealed that loneliness moderates the relationship between social networks and mental health. In addition, moderated mediation models revealed that Internet use played a distinct function in the family networks model compared to the friend networks model. Internet use moderates explicitly the effects of family networks on loneliness and friend networks on mental health. Conclusion The findings emphasize the importance of differentiating the types of social networks to understand their impact on older adults well-being, encouraging policymakers, medical professionals, and families to adopt more targeted approaches when devising policy interventions and medical strategies, especially for older individuals with insufficient social support. Additionally, we urge governments to recognize the varying types of social networks among older populations and harness the protective effects of Internet technology on their well-being within a digital society.

Abstract
Aim Few previous studies have investigated the impact of multiple types of electronic devices on health status, and the moderating effects of gender, age, and BMI. Our aim is to examine the relationships between the use of four types of electronics and three health status indicators in a middle-aged and elderly population, and how these relationships varied by gender, age, and BMI. Subject and methods Using data from 376,806 participants aged 40-69 years in the UK Biobank, we conducted a multivariate linear regression to estimate the association between electronic device use and health status. Electronics use was categorized as TV watching, computer use, computer gaming, and mobile phone use, and health status included self-rated health (SRH), multisite chronic pain (MCP), and total physical activity (TPA). Interaction terms were utilized to assess whether the above associations were modified by BMI, gender, and age. Further stratified analysis was performed to explore the role of gender, age, and BMI. Results Higher levels of TV watching (BSRH = 0.056, BMCP = 0.044, BTPA= -1.795), computer use (BSRH = 0.007, BTPA= -3.469), and computer gaming (BSRH = 0.055, BMCP = 0.058, BTPA= -6.076) were consistently associated with poorer health status (all P < 0.05). Contrastingly, earlier exposure to mobile phones (BSRH = -0.048, BTPA= 0.933, BMCP = 0.056) was inconsistent with health (all P < 0.05). Additionally, BMI (Bcomputer use-SRH= 0.0026, Bphone-SRH= 0.0049, BTV-MCP= 0.0031, and BTV-TPA= -0.0584) exacerbated the negative effects of electronics use, and male (Bphone-SRH = -0.0414, Bphone-MCP = -0.0537, Bphone-TPA= 2.8873) were healthier with earlier exposure to mobile phones (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Our findings suggest that the adverse health effects associated with watching TV, computer use, and computer gaming were consistent and were moderated by BMI, gender, and age, which advances a comprehensive understanding of the association between multiple types of electronic devices and health status, and provides new perspectives for future research. Abstract
Background Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder. Although Internet use has been associated with depression, there is limited data on the association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between smartphone use and depressive symptoms among older individuals in China. Methods 5,244 Chinese older individuals over the age of 60 were selected as the sample from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2018 dataset. The dependent variable "depression symptoms" was measured using the 9-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. The study employed multiple linear regression to investigate the relationship between smartphone use (independent variable) and depressive symptoms in older people. Thorough analyses of robustness, sensitivity, and heterogeneity were conducted to ensure the robustness and sensitivity of the findings. Additionally, mediating effect analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanism through which the dependent and independent variables were related. Results Empirical study indicated that smartphone use had a negative impact on depressive symptoms among older adults, specifically leading to a reduction in such symptoms. The above-mentioned result was verified through endogenous and robustness tests. The heterogeneity analysis revealed that older individuals aged 70 years and above, male, and residing in urban areas exhibited a stronger association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the mediating effect model indicated that political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation mediated the relationship between smartphone use and lower levels of depression symptoms among the older adults. However, passive leisure participation had a suppressing effect on the relationship between smartphone use and reduced depressive symptoms among the older adults. Limitations The causal relationship between variables required further investigation with a longitudinal design. Conclusion These findings suggested that smartphone use may be considered an intervention to reduce depression symptoms among older people by increasing levels of political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation.

Abstract
As the number of smartphone use by older adults increases, investigating the effects of smartphone use on health outcome become important in healthcare. This study aimed to investigate the effects of smartphone use on life satisfaction and the mediating role of depressive symptoms in older adults. This is a secondary data analysis study using the 2017 Korean Media Panel Survey. A total of 2071 respondents aged 65 years and older were analyzed to examine the effects of mobile phone type (no mobile phone/2G phone/smartphone) on life satisfaction. Among the respondents, data from 680 smartphone owners were analyzed to find the effects of the level of smartphone use on life satisfaction. The 2G mobile phone and smartphone owner groups showed significant positive effects on life satisfaction compared with the no mobile phone group, respectively. The level of smartphone use showed significant positive effects on life satisfaction. Depressive symptoms played a mediating role in both models. Smartphone use showed positive effects on life satisfaction in older adults. Nurses should promote the well-being of older adults and minimize the digital health gap in the future by increasing older adults' smartphone use through multi-level approaches.

Abstract
This study aims to assess mobile technology use (cell phones and smartphones), level of digital addiction, and the association of these factors with physical, mental and social health and quality of life (QOL) in community-dwelling older adults. A population-based study of a city with a low-income population in Brazil was carried out. Sociodemographics, cognition(MMSE), mental health(DASS-21), QOL(WHOQOL-bref), sleep quality(Pittsburgh Index), instrumental activities of daily living(Lawton), loneliness(UCLA), digital addiction(Internet Addiction Test) and cell phone/smartphone use were investigated. A total of 668 older adults (93.6% of total) were included; 175(26.2%) owned cell phones, 172(25.7%) smartphones and 321(48.1%) no mobile device. Smartphones owners were predominantly younger, white, had higher income, MMSE scores and social support, and were less dependent. However, no group differences were observed for depression, anxiety or stress symptoms, QOL, sleep disturbances or loneliness. Among 172 smartphone users, Structural Equation Models revealed that the degree of digital addiction was correlated with better physical and environmental conditions, in detriment of a poorer sleep quality. Hours of use were not correlated with health outcomes, whereas greater importance of the smartphone in life correlated with less depressive symptoms and lower loneliness. Different from previous studies in adults or adolescents, older adults who were smartphones users had similar health outcomes than those without Internet access. These findings serve to further our understanding on technology use in this age group.

Abstract
Abstract
While life expectancy increases in developed countries and there is evidence that demonstrates the potential of the internet to optimise or compensate for the losses associated with ageing, there is a high proportion of older people who continue to be disconnected from the digital world. In this scenario, the technological support offered by public institutions has the potential to be an accessible source for the digital literacy of older people. This study, using the model of digital inequality, had the aim of analysing the ability of these institutional supports to determine and predict the digital inclusion of older people. The sample was retired adults (over 54 years) residing in Spain who are users of technological support services in four organisational contexts: nursing homes, senior community centres, University Programs for Seniors and adult education programmes. Through binary logistic regression analysis, we found that the ability of the availability of literacy support to determine and predict access, autonomy, skills and use of the internet for social connectivity depends on the social and organisational context of the technology support service. These findings support empirically the situated nature of technological support for the digital inclusion of older people and provide a useful comparative vision for the design of accessible support services adapted to the needs of its users.

Abstract
As the number of older adults is expected to increase exponentially within the next few decades, loneliness, social isolation, and depression among seniors are growing public health concerns. Although formal treatment options, such as therapy and medication, can be helpful for depression, they can also be expensive and sometimes ineffective. It is therefore important to consider other potential treatment options and social interventions. Alternative methods for addressing mental health issues are especially important for older adults, as they may encounter barriers associated with aging such as limited mobility and decreased social networks. In these circumstances, online social networking may offer a potential "social cure" to alleviate loneliness, social isolation, and depression. The purpose of this scoping review was to gather and summarize the current literature on associations between online social networking and mental health outcomes (e.g., depression, life satisfaction, loneliness) among older adults. An initial search of 3,699 articles resulted in 52 articles that met criteria for inclusion. Five common themes were identified: (1) enhanced communication with family and friends, (2) greater independence and self-efficacy, (3) creation of online communities, (4) positive associations with well-being and life satisfaction, and (5) decreased depressive symptoms. Implications for older adults' mental health, social connectedness, programs and policies are discussed.

Abstract
Many older adults are unable to use social media, which may affect their social support and intergenerational relationships and cause depression. To examine this impact on older Taiwanese adults, we used purposive sampling, a cross-sectional, correlational study design, and a structured questionnaire to collect data on participants' characteristics, social media usage, social support, intergenerational relationships, and depressive symptoms. We studied 153 older adults (aged 60 years and above) and found higher levels of depressive symptoms among participants who took medication, did not exercise regularly or participate in leisure activities, experienced poor health and sleep quality, and had poorer functional ability compared to their counterparts. Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with social media usage, social support, and intergenerational relationships. We recommend considering risk factors and offsetting depressive symptoms by promoting the use of social media and regular exercise to increase social interactions, social support, and intergenerational relationships among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Mobile phone use is increasing among older adults, yet few studies have examined how the various purposes for which mobile phones are used affect loneliness and through what mechanisms. This study aims to address the gap by examining if different uses and gratifications of mobile phone are associated with loneliness and whether there is a mediation effect through face-to-face social interaction. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Participants included 1,318 mobile phone users drawn from a national probability sample of Japanese middle-aged (65% aged 40-64 years) and older adults (35% aged 65 years or older) in 2011. Ordinary Least Squares regression and mediation analyses were used. RESULTS Regression analyses revealed that using a mobile phone for sociability purposes was associated with decreased loneliness (b = -0.10, p < .001), while using it for the purposes of entertainment/passing time was associated with increased loneliness (b = 0.04, p < .01); some effects varied by age and mobile phone feature use. Further, sociability was associated with increased face-to-face social interaction, which was, in turn, associated with reduced loneliness. Passing time, however, was related to reduced face-to-face interaction and, in turn, an increased sense of loneliness. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS Although it is not possible to determine causality from this cross-sectional design, it is possible that the various purposes for which mobile phones are used (specifically sociability and passing time) partially affect loneliness through their effects on either increasing or decreasing face-to-face social interaction. Recommendations for enhancing positive and reducing negative effects of mobile phone usage are discussed.

Abstract
Objectives: There is insufficient evidence regarding the potential risk of mobile phone use on mental health. Therefore, the aim of this research was to examine the relationship between mobile phone use and mental health by measuring the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among university students in Serbia and Italy. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at two distinguished universities in Serbia and Italy from March to May of the 2015/2016 academic year and included 785 students of both genders. The questionnaire was compiled and developed from different published sources regarding the manner and intensity of mobile phone use, along with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS 42) for measuring psychological health. The statistical analysis of the data included the application of binary logistic regression and correlation tests. Results: Statistical analysis indicates that anxiety symptoms are somewhat more present in younger students (odds ratio (OR) = 0.86, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.76–0.96), in those who send more text messages (SMSs) (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.11–1.31), and in those who browse the internet less frequently (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.73–0.95). Stress is more common in students who make fewer calls a day (OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64–0.97), as well in those who spend more time talking on the mobile phone per day (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.12–1.56). The strongest predictor of high stress levels was keeping the mobile phone less than 1 m away during sleeping (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.12–2.08). Conclusions: The results indicated that the intensity and modality of mobile phone use could be a factor that can influence causal pathways leading to mental health problems in the university student population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore associations between older adults' communicative difficulties, depressive symptoms, and e-mail and telephone use with adult children. METHOD We examined these associations using data from 1,634 participants (age M = 71.16, SD = 0.89; 54% female) in the 2011 wave of the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. RESULTS Better vision and worse speech were associated with more frequent e-mail contact with the selected child. Worse hearing was associated with more depressive symptoms for participants with low e-mail use but not for those with average or high e-mail use. Telephone use was not associated with communicative difficulties or depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION This study provides preliminary evidence that older adults might use communication technologies such as e-mail in their close relationships to compensate for communicative difficulties. The text-based format of e-mail might also help older adults mitigate hearing impairments and associated depressive symptoms.
