Intensity of Treatment as Usual and Its Impact on the Effects of Face-to-Face and Internet-Based Psychotherapy for Depression: A Preregistered Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Efficacy and safety of Chinese patent medicines combined with antidepressants for treatment of depression in adults: A multiple-treatment meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Combinations of Chinese patent medicines (CPM) with antidepressants (including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), and noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NaSSA)) are frequently utilized for treating depression in adults. However, the efficacy and safety of these combination treatments remain to be established.

METHODS

Systematic search was conducted in seven electronic databases, regulatory websites and international registers of trials from 1994 to 2023 that included adult patients with depressive disorders who received CPM combined with antidepressants. The Multiple-Treatment Meta-Analysis (MTMA) was conducted using a random effects model with Stata/MP17 and R4.3.5 software. Primary outcomes were total efficacy rate, Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score, and Treatment Emergency Symptom Scale (TESS) score. Secondary outcomes included brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels.

RESULTS

A total of 146 randomized controlled trials (13,754 participants: 6929 in intervention and 6825 in control groups) were included. For total effective rate, Multiple-Treatment Meta-Analysis results showed that the overall effect of combined intervention was better compared with antidepressants alone, where Jieyuanshenkeli (JYASKL) presented the optimal option for improving total efficacy (OR = 5.39, 95% CI [2.60, 11.18], SUCRA = 84.50%). In reduding the HAMD, Shuganjieyujiaonang (SGJYJN) was most likely to reduce the HAMD score (SMD = -2.20, 95% CI [-3.06, -1.33], SUCRA = 86.10%), Jieyuanshenkeli (JYASKL),Tianewangbuxindan (TWBXD), Shuyukeli (SYKL), Anshenbuxinwan (ASBXW) combination intervention did not appear to be statistically superior to antidepressants alone. In theTreatment Emergency Symptom Scale (TESS), Wulinjiaonang induced the most significant reduction in TESS score (SMD = -1.98, 95% CI [-3.59, -0.36], SUCRA = 90.40%). Tianmengjiaonang (TMJN) + Antidepressants(AD) (SUCRA = 88.30%) displayed the highest scores in increasing the levels of BDNF, although not statistically significant compared to Antidepressants(AD) alone (SMD = 1.23, 95% CI [0.90, 1.55]).

CONCLUSION

Combinations of CPM and antidepressants showed superior efficacy over antidepressants alone. The optimal combinations were determined as Shuganjieyu Jiaonang (SGJYJN)/SSRIs and Jieyuanshenkeli (JYASKL)/SSRIs. In terms of safety, results showed that combination therapy did not show better TESS efficacy than antidepressants alone.Although some of the combination interventions were not superior than antidepressants alone in reducing HAMD scores,our findings provide a potentially significant alternative option for clinical complementary therapy. However, these results require further validation through larger sample sizes, multicenter randomized controlled trials, and real-world data.

Meta-analysis of Cognitive Rehabilitation Interventions in Veterans and Service Members With Traumatic Brain Injuries

MAIN OBJECTIVE

Cognitive difficulties are some of the most frequently experienced symptoms following mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). There is meta-analytic evidence that cognitive rehabilitation improves cognitive functioning after TBI in nonveteran populations but not specifically within the veteran and service member (V/SM) population. The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to examine the effect of cognitive rehabilitation interventions for V/SMs with a history of mild-to-moderate TBI.

DESIGN AND MAIN MEASURES

This meta-analysis was preregistered with PROSPERO (CRD42021262902) and used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist for reporting guidelines. Inclusion criteria required studies to have (1) randomized controlled trials; (2) used adult participants (aged 18 years or older) who were US veterans or active-duty service members who had a history of mild-to-moderate TBI; (3) cognitive rehabilitation treatments designed to improve cognition and/or everyday functioning; (4) used objective neuropsychological testing as a primary outcome measure; and (5) been published in English. At least 2 reviewers independently screened all identified abstracts and full-text articles and coded demographic and effect size data. The final search was run on February 24, 2023, using 4 databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Google Scholar). Study quality and bias were examined using the revised Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool for Randomized Trials.

RESULTS

We identified 8 articles meeting full criteria (total participants = 564; 97% of whom had a history of mild TBI). Compared with control groups, participants showed a small, but significant, improvement in overall objective neuropsychological functioning after cognitive rehabilitation interventions. Interventions focusing on teaching strategies had a larger effect size than did those focusing on drill-and-practice approaches for both objective neuropsychological test performance and performance-based measures of functional capacity.

CONCLUSION

There is evidence of cognitive improvement in V/SMs with TBI histories after participation in cognitive rehabilitation. Clinician-administered interventions focusing on teaching strategies may yield the greatest cognitive improvement in this population.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnosis in the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized Control Trial

We investigated whether adding hypnosis to CBT (CBTH) improved treatment outcomes for MDD with a two-armed, parallel-treated, randomized-controlled trial using anonymous self-report and clinician-blinded assessments. Expectancy, credibility, and attitude to hypnosis were also examined. Participants (n = 66) were randomly allocated to 10-weekly sessions of group-based CBT or CBTH. LMM analyses of ITT and Completer data at post-treatment, six-month and 12-month follow-up showed that both treatments were probably efficacious but we did not find significant differences between them. Analyses of remission and response to treatment data revealed that the CBTH Completer group significantly outperformed CBT at 12-month follow-up (p = .011). CBTH also displayed significantly higher associations between credibility, expectancy and mood outcomes up to 12-month follow-up (all p < .05 or better), while attitude to hypnosis showed one significant association (r = -0.57, p < .05). These results suggest that hypnosis shows promise as an adjunct in the treatment of MDD but a larger sample size is required to fully test its merits.

Recently Papola et al. (2023) published a network meta-analysis (NMA) on psychotherapy of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and concluded that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) should be considered the first-line treatment for GAD. However, there are several concerns with regard to the procedures and the conclusions of this NMA and of NMA in general. We show that these concerns question the conclusions by Papola et al. Furthermore, we place concerns about thisNMAin a broader context and question whether existing evidence is consistent with the notion that one form of psychotherapy can be regarded as the gold standard for mental disorders and for all patients and therapists.

We need to be more critical toward digital interventions for eating disorders: A commentary on McClure et al. (2023)

Over the past two decades, numerous digital interventions (also referred to as "e-mental health" interventions) have been developed for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders and several meta-analyses have summarized the existing evidence on the efficacy and effectiveness of such interventions. Based on the present systematic review of McClure and Colleagues, the question of how and for whom digital interventions for eating disorders actually work, remains unanswered. In the absence of reliable mediators and moderators of outcome, priorities for future research are discussed (e.g., a need for more rigorous RCTs with credible comparators). The resulting research agenda is expansive. However, even though this process will take time and might seem slow (especially, in contrast to the rapidity of technological developments), we should not accept a lowering of the quality bar in research on digital interventions compared to other intervention research.

Efficacy of an Internet- and Mobile-Based Intervention for Subclinical Anxiety and Depression (ICare Prevent) with Two Guidance Formats: Results from a Three-Armed Randomized Controlled Trial

INTRODUCTION

Limited research exists on intervention efficacy for comorbid subclinical anxiety and depressive disorders, despite their common co-occurrence. Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) are promising to reach individuals facing subclinical symptoms.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a transdiagnostic and self-tailored IMI in reducing subclinical anxiety and depressive symptom severity with either individualized (IG-IMI) or automated (AG-IMI) guidance compared to a waitlist control group with care-as-usual access (WLC).

METHODS

Participants included 566 adults with subclinical anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 5) and/or depressive (CES-D ≥16) symptoms, who did not meet criteria for a full-syndrome depressive or anxiety disorder. In a three-arm randomized clinical trial, participants were randomized to a cognitive behavioral 7-session IMI plus booster session with IG-IMI (n = 186) or AG-IMI (n = 189) or WLC (n = 191). Primary outcomes included observer-rated anxiety (HAM-A) and depressive (QIDS) symptom severity 8 weeks after randomization assessed by blinded raters via telephone. Follow-up outcomes at 6 and 12 months are reported.

RESULTS

Symptom severity was significantly lower with small to medium effects in IG-IMI (anxiety: d = 0.45, depression: d = 0.43) and AG-IMI (anxiety: d = 0.31, depression: d = 0.32) compared to WLC. No significant differences emerged between guidance formats in primary outcomes. There was a significant effect in HAM-A after 6 months favoring AG-IMI. On average, participants completed 85.38% of IG-IMI and 77.38% of AG-IMI.

CONCLUSIONS

A transdiagnostic, self-tailored IMI can reduce subclinical anxiety and depressive symptom severity, but 12-month long-term effects were absent. Automated guidance holds promise for enhancing the scalability of IMIs in broad prevention initiatives.

Internet-delivered transdiagnostic psychological treatments for individuals with depression, anxiety or both: a systematic review with meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

OBJECTIVE

Depression and anxiety are major public health problems. This study evaluated the effects of internet-delivered transdiagnostic psychological treatments for individuals with depression, anxiety, or both.

DESIGN

Systematic review with meta-analysis.

DATA SOURCES

Medline (Ovid), Cochrane Library (Wiley), the Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate), and PsycInfo (EBSCO) were searched on 24 May 2021, with an update on 6 February 2023.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Randomised controlled trials of internet-delivered transdiagnostic psychological treatments, open to both participants with primary depression and participants with primary anxiety. This review concerned all treatment frameworks, both guided and unguided formats and all age groups.

DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS

In random-effects meta-analysis, we estimated pooled effects on depression symptoms and anxiety in terms of Hedges' g with 95% CIs. Absolute and relative heterogeneity was quantified as the τ2 and I 2.

RESULTS

We included 57 trials with 21 795 participants. Nine trials (16%) recruited exclusively from routine care, and three (5%) delivered treatment via video. For adults, large within-group reductions were seen in depression (g=0.90; 95% CI 0.81 to 0.99) and anxiety (g=0.87; 95% CI 0.78 to 0.96). Compared with rudimentary passive controls, the added effects were moderate (depression: g=0.52; 95% CI 0.42 to 0.63; anxiety: g=0.45; 95% CI 0.34 to 0.56) and larger in trials that required all participants to meet full diagnostic criteria for depression or an anxiety disorder. Compared with attention/engagement controls, the added effects were small (depression: g=0.30; 95% CI 0.07 to 0.53; anxiety: g=0.21; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.42). Heterogeneity was substantial, and the certainty of the evidence was very low. Two trials concerned adolescents and reported mixed results. One trial concerned older adults and reported promising results.

CONCLUSION

Internet-delivered transdiagnostic treatments for depression and anxiety show small-to-moderate added effects, varying by control condition. Research is needed regarding routine care, the video format, children and adolescents and older adults.

Say farewell to bland regression reporting: Three forest plot variations for visualizing linear models

Regression ranks among the most popular statistical analysis methods across many research areas, including psychology. Typically, regression coefficients are displayed in tables. While this mode of presentation is information-dense, extensive tables can be cumbersome to read and difficult to interpret. Here, we introduce three novel visualizations for reporting regression results. Our methods allow researchers to arrange large numbers of regression models in a single plot. Using regression results from real-world as well as simulated data, we demonstrate the transformations which are necessary to produce the required data structure and how to subsequently plot the results. The proposed methods provide visually appealing ways to report regression results efficiently and intuitively. Potential applications range from visual screening in the model selection stage to formal reporting in research papers. The procedure is fully reproducible using the provided code and can be executed via free-of-charge, open-source software routines in R.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Depressive Disorders: Enhancing Access and Tailoring Interventions in Diverse Settings

Depressive disorders are an enormous societal burden given their high prevalence and impact on all facets of being human (e.g., relationships, emotions, motivation). There is a variety of evidence-based psychological treatments, with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) being the gold standard for major depression. Research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) such as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) are an effective relapse prevention and treatment for depression and that MBIs can be integrated in individual therapy. Furthermore, various delivery modes (e.g., digital-delivered therapy) and settings are offered to best meet different needs and improve accessibility: Evidence suggests that therapist-guided digital CBT, blended therapy, and, to some degree, digitalized MBIs may be an efficacious supplement to traditional face-to-face therapy. This chapter provides an overview of the principles and evidence base for CBT and MBCT as well as different delivery modes for depressive disorders in adults. Finally, chances and challenges of integration are discussed as implications for practice, as well as recommendations and ideas for future research.

Prognostic Risk Factors in Randomized Clinical Trials of Face-to-Face and Internet-Based Psychotherapy for Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression Analysis

Importance

Variables such as severe symptoms, comorbidity, and sociodemographic characteristics (eg, low educational attainment or unemployment) are associated with a poorer prognosis in adults treated for depressive symptoms. The exclusion of patients with a poor prognosis from RCTs is negatively associated with the generalizability of research findings.

Objective

To compare the prognostic risk factors (PRFs) in patient samples of RCTs of face-to-face therapy (FTF) and internet-based therapy (IBT) for depression.

Data Sources

PsycINFO, Cochrane CENTRAL, and reference lists of published meta-analyses were searched from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2021.

Study Selection

RCTs that compared FTF (individual or group therapy) and IBT (guided or self-guided interventions) against a control (waitlist or treatment as usual) in adults with symptoms of depression were included.

Data Extraction and Synthesis

Data were extracted by 2 independent observers. The Cochrane revised risk-of-bias tool was used to assess the risk of bias. The study was preregistered with OSF Registries and followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) reporting guideline.

Main Outcomes and Measures

The primary outcome was the standardized mean difference (Hedges g effect size) in depressive symptoms at treatment termination (assessed with standard patient self-report questionnaires), with a positive standardized mean difference indicating larger improvements in the intervention compared with those in the control group. Meta-regression analyses were adjusted for the type of control group. Three preregistered and 2 exploratory sensitivity analyses were conducted. A prognostic risk index (PROG) was created that calculated the sum of 12 predefined individual indicators, with scores ranging from 0 to 12 and higher scores indicating that a sample comprised patients with poorer prognoses.

Results

This systematic review and meta-regression analysis identified 105 eligible RCTs that comprised 18 363 patients. In total, 48 studies (46%) examined FTF, and 57 studies (54%) examined IBT. The PROG was significantly higher in the RCTs of FTF than in the RCTs of IBT (FTF: mean [SD], 3.55 [1.75]; median [IQR], 3.5 [2.0-4.5]; IBT: mean [SD], 2.27 [1.66]; median [IQR], 2.0 [1.0-3.5]; z = -3.68, P < .001; Hedges g = 0.75; 95% CI, 0.36-1.15). A random-effects meta-regression analysis found no association of the PROG with the effect size. Sensitivity analyses with outliers excluded and accounting for risk of bias or small-study effects yielded mixed results on the association between the PROG and effect size.

Conclusions and Relevance

The findings of this systematic review and meta-regression analysis suggest that samples of RCTs of FTF vs IBT differ with regard to PRFs. These findings have implications for the generalizability of the current evidence on IBT for depression. More RCTs of internet-based interventions with clinically representative samples are needed, and the reporting of PRFs must be improved.

The New Emerging Treatment Choice for Major Depressive Disorders: Digital Therapeutics

The chapter provides an in-depth analysis of digital therapeutics (DTx) as a revolutionary approach to managing major depressive disorder (MDD). It discusses the evolution and definition of DTx, their application across various medical fields, regulatory considerations, and their benefits and limitations. This chapter extensively covers DTx for MDD, including smartphone applications, virtual reality interventions, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) platforms, artificial intelligence (AI) and chatbot therapies, biofeedback, wearable technologies, and serious games. It evaluates the effectiveness of these digital interventions, comparing them with traditional treatments and examining patient perspectives, compliance, and engagement. The integration of DTx into clinical practice is also explored, along with the challenges and barriers to their adoption, such as technological limitations, data privacy concerns, ethical considerations, reimbursement issues, and the need for improved digital literacy. This chapter concludes by looking at the future direction of DTx in mental healthcare, emphasizing the need for personalized treatment plans, integration with emerging modalities, and the expansion of access to these innovative solutions globally.

What if we wait? Using synthetic waiting lists to estimate treatment effects in routine outcome data

Objective: Due to the lack of randomization, pre-post routine outcome data precludes causal conclusions. We propose the "synthetic waiting list" (SWL) control group to overcome this limitation.

Method: First, a step-by-step introduction illustrates this novel approach. Then, this approach is demonstrated using an empirical example with data from an outpatient cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) clinic (N = 139). We trained an ensemble machine learning model ("Super Learner") on a data set of patients waiting for treatment (N = 311) to make counterfactual predictions of symptom change during this hypothetical period.

Results: The between-group treatment effect was estimated to be d = 0.42. Of the patients who received CBT, 43.88% achieved reliable and clinically significant change, while this probability was estimated to be 14.54% in the SWL group. Counterfactual estimates suggest a clear net benefit of psychotherapy for 41% of patients. In 32%, the benefit was unclear, and 27% would have improved similarly without receiving CBT.

Conclusions: The SWL is a viable new approach that provides between-group outcome estimates similar to those reported in the literature comparing psychotherapy with high-intensity control interventions. It holds the potential to mitigate common limitations of routine outcome data analysis.

Psychological interventions for interoception in mental health disorders: A systematic review of randomized-controlled trials

Disturbed interoception (i.e., the sensing, awareness, and regulation of internal body signals) has been found across several mental disorders, leading to the development of interoception-based interventions (IBIs). Searching PubMed and PsycINFO, we conducted the first systematic review of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the efficacy of behavioral IBIs at improving interoception and target symptoms of mental disorders in comparison to a non-interoception-based control condition [CRD42021297993]. Thirty-one RCTs fulfilled inclusion criteria. Across all studies, a pattern emerged with 20 (64.5%) RCTs demonstrating IBIs to be more efficacious at improving interoception compared to control conditions. The most promising results were found for post-traumatic stress disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia and substance use disorders. Regarding symptom improvement, the evidence was inconclusive. The IBIs were heterogenous in their approach to improving interoception. The quality of RCTs was moderate to good. In conclusion, IBIs are potentially efficacious at improving interoception for some mental disorders. In terms of symptom reduction, the evidence is less promising. Future research on the efficacy of IBIs is needed.

A Meta-Research of Randomized Controlled Trials in the Field of Mental Health: Comparing Pharmacological to Non-Pharmacological Interventions from 1955 to 2020

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to provide a general overview of mental health randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and summarize the temporal trends in terms of the number of studies, median sample sizes, and median effect sizes using data collected from the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR).

METHODS

Using data collected from the CDSR, the temporal trends are compared in terms of the number of studies, median sample sizes, and median effect sizes between two broad categories of interventions: pharmacological RCT (ph-RCT) and non-pharmacological RCT (nph-RCT), and in conjunction with major mental disorder categories.

RESULTS

Chronologically, the number of mental health RCTs reported in publications has increased exponentially from 1955 to 2020. While ph-RCT comprised a majority of mental health RCTs in the earlier years, the proportion of nph-RCTs increased more quickly over time and markedly exceeded ph-RCT after 2010. The median sample size for all 6,652 mental health RCTs was 61, with 61 for ph-RCT and 60 for nph-RCT. Over time, the median fluctuated but an increasing trend was observed over the past 60+ years. The median of the effect size, measured by Pearson's r, for overall RCTs was 0.18, and nph-RCT (0.19) had a larger median effect size compared to ph-RCT (0.16). Over the years, the nph-RCT had a larger median effect size than the ph-RCT. Differences in the median effect sizes among the categories of mental disorders were also noted. Schizophrenia had the most RCTs, with a median Pearson's r value of 0.17. Mood disorder had the second largest number of RCTs and a median Pearson's r value of 0.15. Neurotic/stress-related mental disorder had the third largest number of RCTs with the highest median Pearson's r being 0.23.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides meaningful information and filled the knowledge gap in mental health RCTs.

Couple therapy with parents: Results from a pragmatic randomized controlled trial testing the Integrative Brief Systemic Intervention (IBSI)

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the Integrative Brief Systemic Intervention (IBSI), combining therapeutic work on marital and coparenting relationships with brief systemic therapy (BST-as-usual) for parent couples. Couples were randomly assigned to the IBSI (n = 51) or BST (n = 50). Both treatments were six-session interventions and lasted about 6 months. Questionnaires on individual, marital, coparenting and family-related functioning were completed before and after therapy, and at 6-month follow-up. A significant improvement in all areas of functioning was observed after treatment and maintained at follow-up for both IBSI and BST-as-usual treatments. No significant differences in outcomes were found between the treatments. Additionally, women reported more distress overall than men, and this distress was reduced more significantly after therapy. Last, BST-as-usual couples requested more additional sessions compared to IBSI couples. This study extends the literature on couple therapy with parents.

Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety-Related Disorders: A Meta-Analysis of Recent Literature

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Effective treatment of anxiety-related disorders is crucial, considering the prevalence of such disorders and their association with poor psychosocial functioning. To evaluate the most recent evidence on the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety-related disorders in adults, we conducted a meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials published since 2017.

RECENT FINDINGS

Ten studies with a total of 1250 participants met the inclusion criteria. Seven of these studies examined PTSD. The findings demonstrated small placebo-controlled effects of CBT on target disorder symptoms (Hedges' g = 0.24, p < 0.05) and depression (Hedges' g = 0.15, p = n.s). When examining only PTSD studies, effects were reduced (Hedges' g = 0.14, p < 0.05). Heterogeneity in most analyses was very low, and no publication bias was found. Effect sizes from placebo-controlled trials from the past 5 years appear to be smaller than those in prior meta-analyses. The findings are largely driven by research on PTSD, with few placebo-controlled trials of other anxiety-related disorders published since 2017.

The use of virtual reality and augmented reality in psychosocial rehabilitation for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review

Objectives

Virtual reality and augmented reality have been used in psychosocial rehabilitation for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders in recent years, to provide functional training in a scaffolded and appealing manner. This systematic review attempted to evaluate (1) how virtual reality or augmented reality technology was deployed, when used as an intervention for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders; and (2) how virtual or augmented reality-assisted psychosocial rehabilitation programs impacted on the functional domains of community living, employment and social participation.

Methods

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was adopted and a search of publications between June 2012 and June 2022 was carried out. The target groups were adults with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorders, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Interventions that targeted at least one functional domain were included.

Results

The database search generated 1,267 records and 38 studies met the inclusion criteria. Three studies utilized augmented reality while the rest utilized virtual reality. The virtual scenarios were displayed in various ways, such as head-mounted displays, computer screens, mobile devices and cave rooms. A few studies also used features such as speech recognition, eye tracking and motion-capture device to provide real-time feedback to participants during rehabilitation. Eleven studies reported interventions that addressed community living, 15 studies addressed vocational skills and nine studies trained participants in social skills or social cognition. Three studies sought to improve quality of life using virtual scenarios to expose participants to various situations. Majority of these studies reported preliminary promising results, with improvement in the functional domains addressed. However, several studies had small sample sizes and many single-arm pretest-posttest studies were assessed to be of serious or critical risk of bias.

Conclusion

Virtual reality and augmented reality are deployed in various ways to augment psychosocial rehabilitation for adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Most interventions target skills training or strategy learning in the areas of community living, work and social participation. Preliminary positive findings of their effects on functional performance were reported. Larger and robust studies using ecologically valid outcome measures will be needed to establish their effects on real-world functional outcomes.

The RIPI-f (Reporting Integrity of Psychological Interventions delivered face-to-face) checklist was developed to guide reporting of treatment integrity in face-to-face psychological interventions

OBJECTIVES

Intervention integrity is the degree to which the study intervention is delivered as intended. This article presents the RIPI-f checklist (Reporting Integrity of Psychological Interventions delivered face-to-face) and summarizes its development methods. RIPI-f proposes guidance for reporting intervention integrity in evaluative studies of face-to-face psychological interventions.

STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING

We followed established procedures for developing reporting guidelines. We examined 56 documents (reporting guidelines, bias tools, and methodological guidance) for relevant aspects of face-to-face psychological intervention integrity. Eighty four items were identified and grouped as per the template for intervention description and replication (TIDieR) domains. Twenty nine experts from psychology and medicine and other scholars rated the relevance of each item in a single-round Delphi survey. A multidisciplinary panel of 11 experts discussed the survey results in three online consensus meetings and drafted the final version of the checklist.

RESULTS

We propose RIPI-f, a checklist with 50 items. Our checklist enhances TIDieR with important extensions, such as therapeutic alliance, provider's allegiance, and the adherence of providers and participants.

CONCLUSION

RIPI-f can improve the reporting of face-to-face psychological interventions. The tool can help authors, researchers, systematic reviewers, and guideline developers. We suggest using RIPI-f alongside other reporting guidelines.

Effects and safety of auricular acupressure on depression and anxiety in isolated COVID-19 patients: A single-blind randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

Psychological distress such as depression and anxiety resulted from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have attracted increasing attention. The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the effects and safety of auricular acupressure on depression and anxiety in isolated COVID-19 patients.

METHODS

68 participants diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia (18-80 years old, SDS ≥ 50, SAS ≥ 45) were recruited and randomly allocated to the auricular acupressure group and the sham auricular acupressure group by a computer-generated random number sequence from 9th June to 30th June 2022. The group allocation was only blinded to the participants. Those in the auricular acupressure group were attached magnetic beads against 4 auricular points Shenmen, Subcortex, Liver and Endocrine, while sham group used four irrelevant auricular points. Outcomes were measured by Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SAS) before and after treatment in both groups through electronic questionnaire in mobile phones.

RESULTS

After treatment, statistically significant differences were found in scores of SAS in both groups (P < 0.001 in auricular acupressure group; P = 0.003 in sham group), and SDS scores reduced significantly in the auricular acupressure group (P = 0.002). Significant reduced SAS and SDS scores were achieved in the auricular acupressure group than that in the sham group (F = 4.008, P = 0.049, MD -7.70 95% CI: -9.00, -6.40, SMD -2.79 95% CI: -3.47, -2.11 in SDS; F = 10.186, P = 0.002, MD -14.00 95% CI: -15.47, -12.53, SMD -4.46 95% CI: -5.37, -3.56 in SAS). No adverse events were found in either group during the whole study.

CONCLUSION

Auricular acupressure is an effective and safe treatment for alleviating symptoms of depressive and anxiety in patients with COVID-19.
