Sexual Activity of Older Adults: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Objective: The goal was to conduct a literature review of studies that examined sexual activity in older adults. Method: A systematic search was conducted to identify studies that had examined sexual activity in adults aged 60 years and older. The main characteristics of each study and results were examined and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Results: Sixty-three articles were found. These articles were classified into three main groups based on the results they presented: percentage of older adults that were sexually active; frequency of sexual activity; and type of sexual activities. The results show that older adults are sexually active, engage in frequent sexual activity, and participate in a wide variety of activities. Conclusions: Although older adults remain sexually active, differences in the way sexual activity is assessed limit the drawing of firm conclusions and our understanding of the sexual activity of older adults. We propose a series of recommendations to gain a better understanding of this topic.

Effect of Premarital Education on the Quality of Life of Female Partners: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background A happy and satisfied marriage is the result of two happy spouses. Getting premarital education is one of the most significant reasons for marital and sexual satisfaction. This study aimed to assess the effect of premarital education on the quality of life of Saudi women. Methodology A cross-sectional study was conducted on 596 Saudi women married for ≤15 years selected from the general population. Data on participants' demographics were collected, and the quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). Results Only 37.2% of the participants had premarital counseling and education, even though 86.4% thought it was crucial before marriage. When this study was conducted, most participants with shorter mean marriage durations had received premarital education or counseling. The mean WHOQOL-BREF score, which measures the quality of life, was considerably higher for participants who indicated that premarital education significantly impacted the quality of their marriage and those who received premarital counseling or attended any form of premarital education. Conclusions Even though premarital education was viewed favorably, only 37.2% of couples obtained it. There is a need to increase public awareness of premarital education's significance and incorporate it into the education curriculum due to the positive associations between receiving it and a higher quality of life.

Sexual Satisfaction and Its Associated Factors among Married Women in Northern Ethiopia

Background

Sexual satisfaction is an essential component of overall health related quality of life. However, the epidemiology of sexual satisfaction among Ethiopian women is largely unknown. Hence, the present study was undertaken to investigate the sexual satisfaction and its associated factors among married women.

Methods

Community-based cross-sectional study with mixed approach was conducted from March 1 to April 30, 2019 in Kewot District, Northern Ethiopia on a sample of 397 married women. Quantitative data was collected on a face-to-face interview using a pre-tested questionnaire while qualitative data was collected using in-depth interviews. The new sexual satisfaction scale was used to assess sexual satisfaction of the women. Descriptive statistics and ordinal logistic regression analysis were performed using SPSS version 23.

Results

The findings showed that half of the participants (50.4%) expressed moderate sexual satisfaction, and only 39% of the participants reported greatest sexual satisfaction. Poor partner communication (AOR = 0.30, 95% CI; 0.11–0.79], poor sexual self-esteem (AOR = 0.17, 95% CI; 0.08 – 0.36), absence of social responsibility (AOR = 6.52, 95% CI; 3.32 – 12.80), poor sexual function (AOR = 0.36, 95% CI; 0.21 – 0.61), no previous information about sexuality (AOR = 0.06, 95% CI; 0.00 – 0.62) and perception of sexual talk as taboo (AOR = 7.15, 95% CI; 3.86 – 13.26) were significantly associated with sexual satisfaction.

Conclusion

Several factors could affect sexual satisfaction of married women. Therefore, development of educational programs, pre-marriage counseling and continuous education should be conducted.

Analysis of the sexual behavior of elderly women treated at a gynecological outpatient clinic

Abstract Objective: to analyze the sexual behavior of the elderly women treated at the gynecological outpatient clinic over a period of one year, estimating the proportion of sexually active women, those with an interest in sex, and those who considered the activity of sex important for quality of life, among other findings. Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory study was performed. A pilot study was carried out in order to adjust and validate the data collection instrument. A convenience sample of 100 women was considered for the evaluation of socio-demographic characteristics and sexual behavior, including questions relating to sexual practice and interfering factors. The data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, and the associations were verified by Pearson’s Chi-squared test, considering a significance of 5%. Results: it was observed that 60.0% of the elderly women felt sexual desire, although 26.0% were sexually active. While 75.5% reported that aging does not improve the quality of sex, 83.0% believed that it is important for quality of life and 78.0% affirmed that there is no age limit for sexual activity. The cultural view of the elderly may interfere with the maintenance of a sexual life, since 51.0% reported feeling sexual prejudice due to their age. Conclusion: sexuality is directly related to the perception of quality of life and as it is a vital human function, can interfere in the social, professional, physical and psychic performance of the individual. The practice of and the desire for sex are not extinguished with aging, which contradicts the myth that the elderly person is an asexual being.

'No Sweet in Sex': Perceptions of Condom Usefulness among Elderly Yoruba People in Ibadan Nigeria

Emerging evidence has shown a gradual increase in sexually transmitted infections among elderly. This study explores the views of elderly Yoruba men and women (60+) on condoms use and its suitability against sexual infections. The research design was a sequential exploratory mixed method that consisted of vignettes based focus group discussion and a structured questionnaire. Twelve vignettes based Focus Group Discussion and a survey of 252 elderly Yoruba people (aged 60+) were carried out. The findings revealed limited awareness and experience with condoms. Few of the male (20.4%) and 2.8% of the female respondents felt condom use can prevent sexually transmitted infections. A marginally proportion of the females (29.2%) than the males (25.0%) perceived condom as more useful for younger people. Condom use as a preventive measure against sexual infections varies by gender and marital status (p = .000). Gender and marital status also had an influence on whether condom use could reduce sexual pleasures (p = 0.000). These findings offer strong support of the sexual pleasure hypothesis which is often invoked to explain attitude toward condom use in a variety of social and cultural contexts. Social marketing of condoms is urgently required to address misconceptions around condom use and encourage uptake among sexually active elderly people.
