Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Gambian women. Current estimates indicate that 286 women are annually diagnosed with cervical cancer with a fatality rate of 70%. In an attempt to address this, in 2019 the quadrivalent HPV vaccine was incorporated into the Gambia's Expanded Programme on Immunisation. The study aims to retrospectively assess the prevalence and distribution of high-risk HPV genotype in archived, formalin fixed paraffin embedded cervical biopsy tissues diagnosed with cervical cancer in the Gambia from year 2013-2022. METHOD A total of 223 samples with histologically diagnosis of cervical cancer with adequate tissues were sectioned and deparaffinised, followed by HPV DNA extraction and the detection of HR-HPV by real-time multiplex PCR. The human β-globin gene was amplified in 119 samples, which were subsequently tested for HPV DNA. RESULTS HPV was prevalent in 87.4% (104 of 119) cervical cancer cases, 12.6% (15/119) samples tested negative. Amongst cervical cancer cases, HPV 16 genotype was the most frequent type accounting for 53.8% (56 /104), followed by other HR-HPV genotypes 17.3% (18/104), and HPV genotype 18 was 15.4% (16/104). Furthermore, multiple HPV infections involving HPV 16 and /or 18 was detected in 14 cases as follows: HPV genotypes 16 and 18 (3.8%, 4 /104), HPV 16 and other HR-HPV (6.7%, 8/104), and HPV 18 and other HR-HPV (1.9%, 2/104). A significant association between age and diagnosis with cervical cancer (p = 0.02), and HPV genotype 16 (p = 0.04) was observed. CONCLUSION There was no difference in the distribution of HPV 16 and 18 genotypes in cervical cancer cases in The Gambia in comparison with the global distribution. However, the high prevalence of cervical cancer cases with other HR-HPV, and combined infections of HPV 16 with other HR-HPV genotypes seen in this study, clearly shows that the nonavalent HPV vaccine could be more beneficial for The Gambia. This study provides The Gambia with a baseline data to use in policy decisions regarding future evaluation of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine in the country.

Abstract
Cervical cancer related to high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is the second female cancer in Mauritania (Northwest Sahelian Africa). We assessed the distribution of HPV genotypes in Mauritanian women with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2/3) or invasive cervical cancer (ICC). A prospective study was conducted in the Centre Hospitalier National, Nouakchott, Mauritania, to collect cervical biopsies among women suspected of CIN2/3 or cancer. HPV DNA detection and genotyping were carried out from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsies using multiplex PCR (Human Papillomavirus Genotyping Real-Time PCR Kit, Bioperfectus Technologies Co., Taizhou, China). Fifty biopsies were included from women (mean age: 56.7 years) suffering from CIN2/3 (28.0%) and ICC (72.0%) which corresponded to 32 (64.0%) squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and 4 (8.0%) adenocarcinomas (ADC). HPV DNA detection was successful in 47 (94.0%) samples. The most prevalent HR-HPV genotypes were HPV-45 (40.4%), HPV-16 (38.3%), HPV-39 and HPV-52 (23.4%), HPV-33 (17.0%), HPV-18 (14.9%), HPV-35 (4.2%), and HPV-56 (2.1%). The majority (93.6%) of HPV-positive biopsies contained at least one HPV type covered by the 9-valent Gardasil-9® vaccine, and 40.9% were infected by multiple vaccine HPV genotypes. To eradicate cervical cancer in Mauritania, prophylactic HPV vaccination must be combined with primary molecular screening of cervical HR-HPV infection.

Abstract
Background Cervical cancer is the leading cause of gynaecological cancer death among women in developing countries and the most preventable of all gynaecological cancers as its infectious aetiological agent, human papillomavirus (HPV), is known. The knowledge of HPV serotype distribution in a sub-region is key to the implementation of an appropriate HPV vaccination programme. Aim To assess the prevalence of HPV-DNA, serotypes and risk-determinants among women with invasive cervical cancer (ICC) in Katsina State, Northwestern Nigeria. Methods This was a cross-sectional, multicenter study involving Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina, General Hospital Katsina and Turai Yar'adua Maternal and Child Hospital Katsina, Nigeria. Sixty-three women with histologically confirmed cervical cancer who fulfilled the criteria were recruited into the study. Tissue blocks with a confirmed diagnosis of ICC were taken to DNA Labs Kaduna for HPV-deoxyribonucleotide acid detection and typing. An interviewer-administered questionnaire developed for the study was used to obtain socio-demographic, reproductive characteristics and the other risk factors for HPV acquisition and persistence. Results The HPV-positivity rate in ICC was 95.5% while the prevalence of high-risk HPV (Hr-HPV)-DNA in the specimen was 54.6% with 13 HPV-serotypes detected, 9 Hr-HPV types (16,18,31,33,35,45,51,56,82) and 4 low-risk HPV types (6,44,81,89). The most commonly detected HPV serotype among women with a single HPV infection was HPV 81 (40.9%) followed by HPV 16 (28.8%). However, HPV 16 was the most common serotype among those with multiple HPV infections. Prevalence of other detected serotypes were HPV 31 (24.2%), 33 (24.2%), HPV 18 (10.6%), HPV 35 (3.0%), HPV 45 (9.1%), HPV 44 (1.5%), HPV 51 (3.0%), HPV 56 (3.0%), HPV 82 (1.5%), HPV 89 (1.5%) and HPV 6 (1.5%). Forty-four out of 63 women (69.8%) had a single HPV infection, 19 (30.2%) had multiple HPV infections and 15 (24.3%) were co-infected with HPV 16/31/33. There was a statistically significant association between HPV 16 and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Conclusion The study demonstrates a prevalence of HPV-DNA as 95.5% among women with ICC. The most commonly detected HPV serotype was HPV 81 seen in 41% which was an uncommon finding. Furthermore, statistically significant associations between HPV serotypes 16 and 82 with SCC were detected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vaccination against Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary preventative strategy that has been shown to reduce the burden of HPV related diseases. Zimbabwe introduced the bivalent vaccine (HPV 16/18) in the vaccination program targeting prepubescent girls in 2018. This review is an analysis of the distribution of HPV genotypes from various studies conducted in Zimbabwe to ascertain the effectiveness of the bivalent vaccine and make recommendations for future HPV vaccine choices. SUMMARY Zimbabwean studies have mostly reported on cervical HPV in the urban areas. The most frequent HPV genotypes from cervical sites were 16, 18, 33, 35, 45, 56 and 58. These were identified from samples with normal cytology, pre-cancer and invasive cervical cancer. The few studies that have been done in rural areas reported HPV 35 as the most frequent cervicovaginal genotype. From the anal region of individuals reporting for routine screening, HPV 16, 18, 35 52 and 58 were the most frequent. A study on genital warts identified HPV 6, 11, 16, 40, 51and 54. In a study on children with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), HPV 6 and 11 were the most common and HPV 35 was also identified in these children. There is no available published data on HPV distribution in head and neck cancers in Zimbabwe. KEY MESSAGES Given that 83% of cervical cancers in Zimbabwe are caused by HPV 16/18, the bivalent vaccine could cover a significant proportion of HPV related cervical cancer. The current limitation of the bivalent vaccine is its failure to prevent benign lesions such as genital warts and RRP or all cervical cancer cases in Zimbabwe. For the prevention of most HPV related conditions, the nonavalent vaccine would be the most appropriate option for the Zimbabwean population. Currently there is no vaccine that includes HPV 35, yet this genotype was frequently identified in HPV related diseases. Vaccine developers may need to consider HPV 35 when manufacturing the next generation HPV vaccines. Furthermore, boys should also be included in HPV vaccination programs to improve herd immunity, as well as prevent RRP and HPV-related head and neck cancers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The second most deadly gynecological cancer worldwide, cervical cancer is steadily on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa, while vaccination programs are struggling to get off the ground. This systematic review's aim was to assess the prevalence and distribution of high- and low-risk HPV genotypes in West African women. METHODS Original studies were retrieved from PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Science Direct. In these studies, Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA was assessed in cervical samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Hybrid capture, and sequencing. The quality of the articles was assessed and the results were extracted and reviewed. RESULTS Thirty-nine studies from 10 West African countries were included for the systematic review including 30 for the pooled analysis. From an overall of 17358 participants, 5126 of whom were infected with at least one HPV genotype, the systematic review showed a prevalence varying from 8.9% to 81.8% in the general population. In contrast, the pooled prevalence of infection was 28.6% (n = 3890; 95% CI 27.85-29.38), and HPV-52 (13.3%), HPV-56 (9.3%), and HPV-35 (8.2) were the most frequent. Quadrivalent and nonavalent vaccines covered 18.2% and 55.8% of identified genotypes respectively. CONCLUSION Faced with this growing public health challenge in West Africa, it would be necessary for all its countries to have reliable data on HPV infection and to introduce the nonavalent vaccine. A study of the genotypic distribution of HPV in high-grade precancerous lesions and cervical cancer would be very useful in West Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical cancer (CC) is the fourth most common malignancy of the female genital tract. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of precancerous lesions and CC cases worldwide. OBJECTIVE We assessed the prevalence and distribution of HPV types and their association with precancerous lesions and CC. METHODS HPV genotypes were detected by 3 methods depending on the year of in which the sample was analyzed: MY09/11 RFLPs (1997 to 2010), GP5+/6+ primer systems (2005 to 2010) and INNO-LiPA HPV Genotyping Extra (2010 to 2019) in cervical samples (No-IL: 4445; LSIL: 2464; HSILs: 151 and CC: 253) from women from southern Mexico. RESULTS The overall HPV prevalence was 54.17%, and hpv-16 was the most common genotype. In single infection, the high-risk HPV genotypes (group 1) were associated with squamous intraepitelial lesions (LSIL: HPV-39 (OR = 10.58, 95% CI 4.09-27.36, P < .001); HSIL: HPV-31 (OR = 14.76, 95% CI 6.56-33.20, P < .001); and CC: HPV-16 (OR = 25.01, 95% CI 18.83-33.21, P < .001). In multiple infections, the HPV genotypes (HPV-16 and HPV-18) were also associated with a high risk of lesions [LSIL: HPV-18 (OR = 3.45; 95% CI 1.36-8.91; P = .009); HSIL: HPV-18 (OR = 5.12; 95% CI 1.21-21.68; P = .026); and CC: HPV-16 (OR = 3.03; 95% CI 1.72-5.32; P < .001)] compared to single infection. In the analysis adjusted for age, giving birth, and cigarette smoking, a significant increase in the risk of LSIL, HSIL, and CC was maintained. CONCLUSIONS This study provides current data on the prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes in women from southern Mexico, which could serve as a valuable reference to guide nationwide CC screening programs and provide scientific evidence that could be useful for vaccine development efforts. Likewise, it was identified that infection with carcinogenic HPV genotypes is an independent risk factor for LSIL, HSIL, and CC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are no robust national prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in Nigerian women despite the high burden of cervical cancer morbidity and mortality. THE OBJECTIVE OF STUDY This study aims to determine the pooled prevalence and risk factors of genital HPV infection in Nigeria through a systemic review protocol. METHODS Databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and AJOL were searched between 10 April to 28 July 2020. HPV studies on Nigerian females and published from April 1999 to March 2019 were included. GRADE was used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS The pooled prevalence of cervical HPV was 20.65% (95%CI: 19.7-21.7). Genotypes 31 (70.8%), 35 (69.9%) and 16 (52.9%) were the most predominant HPV in circulation. Of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, northeast had the highest pooled prevalence of HPV infection (48.1%), while the least was in the north-west (6.8%). After multivariate logistic regression, duration (years) of sexual exposure (OR = 3.24, 95%CI: 1.78-9.23]), history of other malignancies (OR = 1.93, 95%CI: 1.03-2.97]), history of sexually transmitted infection (OR = 2.45, 95% CI: 1.31-3.55]), coital frequency per week (OR = 5.11, 95%CI: 3.86-14.29), the status of circumcision of the sexual partner (OR = 2.71, 95%CI: 1.62-9.05), and marital status (OR = 1.72, 95%CI: 1.16-4.72), were significant risk factors of HPV infection (p < 0.05). Irregular menstruation, post-coital bleeding and abdominal vaginal discharge were significantly associated with HPV infection (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION HPV prevalence is high in Nigeria and was significantly associated with several associated risk factors. Rapid screening for high-risk HPV genotypes is recommended and multivalent HPV vaccines should be considered for women.

Abstract
Patients of African ancestry have the poorest outcome and the shortest survival rates from cancer globally. This could be attributed to many variables including racial, biological, socioeconomic and sociocultural factors (either single, multiple or combined), which may be responsible for this major health problem. We sought to assess the most common types of cancer that endanger the health of the African people, and tried to investigate the real differences between African and other Non-African patients regarding incidence, prevalence and mortality rates of different cancers. Therefore, identifying the underlying aetiological causes responsible for the increased incidence and mortality rates of African patients will allow for changing the current plans, to make optimized modalities for proper screening, diagnosis and treatment for those African patients, in order to improve their survival and outcomes.
