Abstract
BACKGROUND The intestinal-level host-microbiota interaction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases. The current review is intended to provide a comprehensive insight into deciphering whether intestinal-level bioactivities mediate the overall metabolic health benefits of green tea catechins. PURPOSE We have comprehensively discussed pre-clinical and clinical evidences of intestinal-level changes in metabolism, microbiota, and metabolome due to catechin-rich green tea treatments, ultimately limiting metabolic diseases. Exclusive emphasis has been given to purified catechins and green tea, and discussions on extraintestinal mechanisms of metabolic health benefits were avoided. METHODS A literature search for relevant pre-clinical and clinical studies was performed in various online databases (e.g., PubMed) using specific keywords (e.g., catechin, intestine, microbiota). Out of all the referred literature, ∼15% belonged to 2021-2023, ∼51% were from 2011-2020, and ∼32% from 2000-2010. RESULT The metabolic health benefits of green tea catechins are indeed influenced by the intestinal-level bioactivities, including reduction of mucosal inflammation and oxidative stress, attenuation of gut barrier dysfunction, decrease in intestinal lipid absorption and metabolism, favorable modulation of mucosal nuclear receptor signaling, alterations of the luminal global metabolome, and mitigation of the gut dysbiosis. The results from the recent clinical studies support the pre-clinical evidences. The challenges and pitfalls of the currently available knowledge on catechin bioactivities have been discussed, and constructive directions to harness the translational benefits of green tea through future interventions have been provided. CONCLUSION The metabolism, metabolome, and microbiota at the intestinal epithelia play critical roles in catechin metabolism, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and bioactivities. Especially the reciprocal interaction between the catechins and the gut microbiota dictates the metabolic benefits of catechins.

Abstract
Tea is the most frequently consumed beverage worldwide and is obtained from the leaves Camellia sinensis. The traditional way of tea consumption through brewing is gradually being replaced by the consumption of bottled and hand-shaken tea. Despite the different ways of tea consumption, trace elements accumulation and contamination of tea leaves have caused concerns. However, limited studies have reported trace element concentrations in different types of tea in bottled or hand-shaken tea and their health risks. This study aimed to determine the level of trace elements (V, Cr, Co, As, Cd, Pb, Mn, and Zn) in green tea, black tea, and Oolong tea in two varieties of products (bottled and hand-shaken tea). The health risks associated with tea consumption in various age subgroups among Taiwan's general population were also estimated. A Monte Carlo simulation was applied to estimate the distribution of daily trace elements intake through bottled and hand-shaken tea consumption. As to the non-carcinogenic risks, the Monte Carlo simulation showed that hand-shaken green tea had a higher percentage of hazard index (HI) >1 (1.08%~6.05%) among all age groups. As to carcinogenic risks, the Monte Carlo simulation showed that the risks of As exposure from bottled Oolong tea and hand-shaken black, green, and Oolong teas in the 90th percentile in >18 to ≤65 and >65-year-old groups were higher than 10-6. The current study findings provided some information about trace elements of both bottled and hand-shaken tea and human health risks in the general population of Taiwan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Epidemiologic studies are inconsistent regarding the association between green tea consumption and the risk of stroke. We performed a meta-analysis to determine whether an association exists between them in cohort studies. METHODS We searched the PubMed and Embase databases for studies conducted from 1966 through September 2022. Prospective cohort studies that provided relative risk (RR) estimates with 95% confidence interval (CI)s for the association were included. Study-specific risk estimates were combined by using a random-effects model. RESULTS A total of five studies, with 11 421 stroke cases among 645 393 participants, were included in the meta-analysis. The summary RR indicated a significant association between highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of stroke (summary RR: 0.74; 95% CI, 0.66-0.83). In the dose-response analysis, we observed a nonlinear association between green tea consumption and the risk of stroke (P for nonlinearity = 0.0000). Compared with non-consumers, the RRs (95% CI) of stroke across levels of green tea consumption were 0.91 (0.89-0.94) for 150 mL/d, 0.84 (0.80-0.89) for 300 mL/d, 0.79 (0.74-0.84) for 500 mL/d, 0.77 (0.72-0.82) for 900 mL/d, and 0.84 (0.77-0.91) for 1500 mL/d. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis suggests that green tea consumption is inversely associated with the risk of stroke, especially among those with moderate consumption. Our results support recommendations for green tea consumption to the primary prevention of stroke.

Abstract
Oolong tea is one of the world's most popular non-alcoholic beverages, particularly in coastal Southeast China. Hitherto, epidemiological studies on the association between oolong tea consumption and the risk of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are very limited. This study aimed to evaluate the potential effect of oolong tea consumption on OSCC risk in Southeast China. From January 2010 to October 2020, face-to-face interviews were conducted for 744 newly diagnosed OSCC patients and 1,029 healthy controls to collect information on demographics, oolong tea consumption behaviors, and other lifestyle factors. Propensity score matching (PSM), inverse probability of treatment weight (IPTW), and stabilized inverse probability of treatment weight (SIPTW) were utilized to minimize confounding effects. Multivariate, conditional, and weighted logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations of oolong tea consumption behaviors with OSCC risk. Participants who drank oolong tea showed a lower risk of OSCC when compared to their non-drink counterparts [PSM population, OR (95%CI): 0.69 (0.49-0.97); SIPTW population, OR (95%CI): 0.74 (0.58-0.94)]. Moreover, the reduced risk was found to be significantly associated with certain tea-drinking habits (consumed amount over 500 mL per day, a duration of <20 years, age at initiation older than 30 years, and warm and moderately concentrated tea). Similar results were yielded in the sensitivity analyses (Multivariate adjustment and the IPTW analysis). Furthermore, subgroup analysis revealed that the negative association of oolong tea drinking with OSCC risk was more evident among those with poor oral hygiene. This study provides supportive evidence that oolong tea consumption may have a potentially beneficial effect in preventing OSCC, especially for those with poor oral hygiene.

Abstract
The abnormal neurites have long been regarded as the main player contributing to the poor outcome of patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). (-)-Eigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major biological component of tea catechin, exhibited strong neuroprotective effects against central nervous system diseases; however, the role of EGCG-mediated neurite outgrowth after SAH has not been delineated. Here, the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS)/integrin β1/FAK/p38 pathway on neurite outgrowth was investigated. As expected, oxyhemoglobin- (OxyHb-) induced excessive ROS level was significantly reduced by EGCG as well as antioxidant N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC). Consequently, the expression of integrin β1 was significantly inhibited by EGCG and NAC. Meanwhile, EGCG significantly inhibited the overexpression of phosphorylated FAK and p38 to basal level after SAH. As a result, the abnormal neurites and cell injury were rescued by EGCG, which eventually increased energy generation and neurological score after SAH. These results suggested that EGCG promoted neurite outgrowth after SAH by inhibition of ROS/integrin β1/FAK/p38 signaling pathway. Therefore, EGCG might be a new pharmacological agent that targets neurite outgrowth in SAH therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIM Observational studies have reported that tea consumption is associated with risk of stroke. However, this observed association is inconsistent, and whether this observed association is due to confounding factors or reverse causation remains unclear. Thus, we applied a two-sample mendelian randomization (MR) approach to determine whether genetically predicted tea consumption is causally associated with risk of stroke, ischemic stroke (IS), and IS subtypes. METHODS UK Biobank available data (349,376 samples of European ancestry) was used to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with tea consumption (cups/day). The summary statistics for stroke, IS, and IS subtypes were obtained from the MEGASTROKE consortium with 40,585 stroke cases and 406,111 controls. RESULTS We found that genetically predicted an extra daily cup of tea consumption was casually associated with a reduced risk of small vessel stroke (odds ratio (OR), 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.69-0.91; P = 0.001), but not with cardioembolic stroke (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.86-1.09; P = 0.582), large artery stroke (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.82-1.10; P = 0.506), stroke (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.95-1.06; P = 0.889) or IS (OR, 0.95; 95% CI, 0.89-1.01; P = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS Our study provided evidence that genetically predicted an extra daily cup of tea consumption is causally associated with a reduced risk of small vessel stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many cohort studies have explored the relation between tea consumption and stroke risk; however, the conclusions have been inconsistent. In addition, evidence is lacking in China, where the patterns of tea consumption and main types of tea consumed differ substantially from those in high-income countries. OBJECTIVE We aimed to systematically assess the association of tea consumption with the risk of stroke based on a Chinese large-scale cohort study. METHODS A total of 487,377 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank were included in the present study. Detailed information about tea consumption (including frequency, duration, amount, and tea type) was self-reported at baseline. After ∼4.3 million person-years of follow-up, 38,727 incident cases of stroke were recorded, mainly through linkage with mortality and morbidity registries and based on the national health insurance system. RESULTS Overall, 128,280 adults (26.3%) reported drinking tea almost daily (41.4% men, 15.9% women), predominantly green tea (86.7%). Tea consumption had an inverse and dose-response relation with the risk of stroke (Ptrend < 0.001). Compared with nonconsumers, those who consumed tea occasionally, weekly, and daily had adjusted HRs and 95% CIs of 0.96 (0.94, 0.99), 0.94 (0.90, 0.98), and 0.92 (0.89, 0.95) respectively, with little difference by stroke type. Among those who consumed tea daily, the HRs for stroke decreased with the increasing duration and amount of tea consumed (all P < 0.001). These inverse associations were significant for green tea but not for other types of tea. Among men, but not women, the inverse relations could be detected, and similar inverse associations could be found for male noncurrent alcohol-consumers and noncurrent smokers as well. CONCLUSIONS Among Chinese adults, higher consumption of tea, especially green tea, was associated with a lower risk of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

Abstract
Carnitine, a dietary quaternary amine mainly from red meat, is metabolized to trimethylamine (TMA) by gut microbiota and subsequently oxidized to trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) by host hepatic enzymes, flavin monooxygenases (FMOs). The objective of this study aims to investigate the effects of flavonoids from oolong tea and citrus peels on reducing TMAO formation and protecting vascular inflammation in carnitine-feeding mice. The results showed that mice treated with 1.3% carnitine in drinking water significantly (p < 0.05) increased the plasma levels of TMAO compared to control group, whereas the plasma TMAO was remarkedly reduced by flavonoids used. Meanwhile, these dietary phenolic compounds significantly (p < 0.05) decreased hepatic FMO3 mRNA levels compared to carnitine only group. Additionally, oolong tea extract decreased mRNA levels of vascular inflammatory markers such as tissue necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and E-selectin. Polymethoxyflavones significantly lowered the expression of VCAM-1 and showed a decreasing trend in TNF-α and E-selectin mRNA expression compared to the carnitine group. Genus-level analysis of the gut microbiota in the cecum showed that these dietary phenolic compounds induced an increase in the relative abundances of Bacteroides. Oolong tea extract-treated group up-regulated Lactobacillus genus, compared to the carnitine only group. Administration of polymethoxyflavones increased Akkermansia in mice.

Abstract
Obesity is one of the top global issues, which induces several serious health consequences both physically and mentally, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidemia, eating disorders, depression and stress. However, the effective therapy to prevent and treat obesity and overweight, up to now, cannot be found nowadays. Several methods/medicines namely diet control, energy balance, environmental changes, genetic and stem cell therapies, new drugs/chemicals have been extensively studied to enhance the ability to control bodyweight and prevent obesity. Of all the aforementioned methods, green tea, used as a daily beverage, has shown beneficial impacts for the health, especially its anti-obesity effects. Available evidence shows that green tea can interrupt lipid emulsification, reduce adipocyte differentiation, increase thermogenesis, and reduce food intake, thus green tea improves the systemic metabolism and decreases fat mass. Here, we highlight and sum up the update investigations of anti-obesity effect of green tea as well as discuss the potential application of them for preventing obesity and its related metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Medicinal plants are essential parts of traditional medicine due to their phytochemical constituents having pharmacological values and therapeutic applications. Black tea have thousands of various biological compounds such as flavonoids (Thearubigins (TRs) and theaflavins (TFs) and catechins), amino acids (L.theanine), vitamins (A, C, K), phenolic acids (caffeic acid (CA), gallic acid (GA), chlorogenic acids (CGA) and cauramic acid), lipids, proteins, volatile compounds carbohydrates, β-carotene and fluoride that illustrated many promising pharmacological effects regarded as growth promoter, cardioprotector, potent cholesterol-lowering effect, antioxidant and antimicrobial, etc inhuman. Although there is an exponential growth in molecular evidence of cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant effect in human, there is still a lack of information of the pharmacological effects of black tea. To fill this information gap, therefore, this review article underscores broadening the new insight pertaining to black tea that could be used as safe food additive. This article also illuminates the interesting role of black tea as an herbal medicine that is the future demand to get rid of synthetic health promoters in the human health practice. Moreover, this information would be useful in terms of the low-cost practice of natural medicines with no residual effects, and a natural protection of the human being. In addition, further studies at a molecular level are needed to reveal its mechanism of action particularly for the hypocholesterolemic effect of black tea to overcome the heart-related diseases, fewer side effects and being a natural safeguard of human health.

Abstract
Tea, a popular beverage made from leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, has been studied extensively in recent decades for its beneficial health effects in the prevention of obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. Whereas these beneficial effects have been convincingly demonstrated in most laboratory studies, results from human studies have not been consistent. Some studies demonstrated that weight reduction, alleviation of metabolic syndrome and risk reduction in diabetes were only observed in individuals who consume 3-4 cups of tea (600-900 mg tea catechins) or more daily. This chapter reviews some of these studies, the possible mechanisms of actions of tea constituents, and the challenges in extrapolating laboratory studies to human situations.

Abstract
Oolong tea (OT) is a traditional Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis) and is especially popular in south China. This review is to comprehensively summarize the miscellaneous research that has been done towards to the processing, phytochemistry, health benefit, and risk of OT. These literatures were carried out not only from different electronic databases but also from text books written in English, Japanese, and Chinese, including those traditional records tracing back to the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907). The full process OT producing is depicted below in this review. The phytochemistry of OT has been comprehensively investigated. More than 100 chemical compositions have been isolated and identified. In health benefit, OT performs outstandingly in reducing obesity and controlling diabetes explained by modern pharmacological studies. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (6) in OT prevention of cancerous cells developing. OT can also improve and reduce on heart and vascular disease, protect teeth and bone, function as anti-oxidative and antibacterial agents. This review also mentioned the risk, summarized briefly on various forms of toxicity and harmful associated with OT. In short, this review can provided a natural product library of OT, gave inspirations for further new garden systems, designed idea on quality, bioactivity-oriented screening. In addition, it is suggested more scientists and education is necessary to guarantee the stability and safety of drinking OT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although coffee consumption is increasing rapidly, the results of previous studies regarding the association between coffee consumption and stroke risk have been conflicting. This was a multi-center cross-sectional study that aimed to evaluate the relationship between coffee consumption and stroke risk in Korean population. METHODS Data were obtained from the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study, which involved 146,830 individuals aged 40-69 years. Coffee consumption was categorized as none, < 1 cup/day, 1 to < 3 cups/day, and ≥ 3 cups/day. We used logistic regression models to examine the association between coffee consumption and the risk of stroke while controlling for potential confounders and performed subgroup analyses. RESULTS After adjusting for age and various possible confounders, high coffee consumption was associated with a 38% lower odds ratio for stroke in women (none vs. ≥ 3 cups/day: OR, 0.62; 95% CI 0.47-0.81; P for trend < 0.0001). No significant association was found in men (none vs. ≥ 3 cups/day: OR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.66-1.07; P for trend = 0.1515). In analyses stratified by covariates, an inverse association between coffee consumption and stroke risk was most evident among healthy women who were younger, non-obese, non-hypertensive, non-diabetic, non-smokers, and non-alcohol drinkers. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that higher coffee consumption may have protective benefits with regards to stroke risk in middle-aged Korean women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Green tea has been suggested to improve cardiovascular disease risk factors, including circulating lipid variables. However, current evidence is predominantly based on small, short-term randomized controlled trials conducted in diverse populations. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and impact of green tea extract (GTE) supplementation high in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on blood lipids in healthy postmenopausal women. DESIGN This was an ancillary study of a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm trial investigating the effects of a GTE supplement containing 1315 mg catechins (843 mg EGCG) on biomarkers of breast cancer risk. Participants were randomly assigned to receive GTE (n = 538) or placebo (n = 537) and were stratified by catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) genotype activity (high COMT compared with low or intermediate COMT genotype activity). They consumed either 4 GTE or identical placebo capsules daily for 12 mo. A total of 936 women completed this substudy. Circulating lipid panels including total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides were measured at baseline and at months 6 and 12. RESULTS Compared with placebo, 1-y supplementation with GTE capsules resulted in a significant reduction in circulating TC (-2.1% compared with 0.7%; P = 0.0004), LDL cholesterol (-4.1% compared with 0.9%; P < 0.0001) and non-HDL cholesterol (-3.1% compared with 0.4%; P = 0.0032). There was no change in HDL-cholesterol concentration, but triglyceride concentrations increased by 3.6% in the GTE group, whereas they decreased by 2.5% in the placebo group (P = 0.046). A significant reduction in TC was observed only among women with high (i.e., ≥200 mg/dL) baseline TC concentrations (P-interaction = 0.01) who consumed GTE capsules. The effect of GTE on the increase in triglycerides was mainly observed among obese women and statin users (P-interaction = 0.06). CONCLUSION Supplementation with GTE significantly reduced circulating TC and LDL-cholesterol concentrations, especially in those with elevated baseline TC concentrations. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00917735.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction and subsequent autophagy, which are common features in central nervous system (CNS) disorders, were found to contribute to neuronal cell injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main biological active of tea catechin, is well known for its beneficial effects in the treatment of CNS diseases. Here, the ability of EGCG to rescue cellular injury and mitochondrial function following the improvement of autophagic flux after SAH was investigated. As expected, EGCG-protected mitochondrial function depended on the inhibition of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) influx via voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) and, consequently, mitochondrial Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]m) overload via mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter (MCU). The attenuated [Ca2+]i and [Ca2+]m levels observed in the EGCG-treated group likely lessened oxyhemoglobin (OxyHb)-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, including mitochondrial membrane potential depolarization, mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cytochrosome c (cyt c) releasing. Subsequently, EGCG can restore the disrupted autophagy flux after SAH both at the initiation and formation stages by regulating Atg5, LC3B, and Becn-1 (Beclin-1) mRNA expressions. Thus, precondition EGCG resulted in autophagosomes and more autolysosomes compared with SAH group. As a result, EGCG pre-treatment increased the neurological score and decreased cell death. This study suggested that the mitochondrial dysfunction and abnormal autophagy flux synergistically contribute to SAH pathogenesis. Thus, EGCG can be regarded as a new pharmacological agent that targets both mitochondria and altered autophagy in SAH therapy.

Abstract
Tea, a popular beverage made from leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, has been shown to reduce body weight, alleviate metabolic syndrome, and prevent diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in animal models and humans. Such beneficial effects have generally been observed in most human studies when the level of tea consumption was three to four cups (600-900 mg tea catechins) or more per day. Green tea is more effective than black tea. In spite of numerous studies, the fundamental mechanisms for these actions still remain unclear. From a review of the literature, we propose that the two major mechanisms are: (i) decreasing absorption of lipids and proteins by tea constituents in the intestine, thus reducing calorie intake; and (ii) activating AMP-activated protein kinase by tea polyphenols that are bioavailable in the liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissues. The relative importance of these two mechanisms depends on the types of tea and diet consumed by individuals. The activated AMP-activated protein kinase would decrease gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis and increase catabolism, leading to body weight reduction and metabolic syndrome alleviation. Other mechanisms and the health relevance of these beneficial effects of tea consumption remain to be further investigated.

Abstract
Green tea (綠茶 Lǜ Chá), made from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, has traditionally been used as a medicine in China for thousands of years. According to the classical work of Li Shizhen (李時珍 Lǐ Shí Zhēn) of the Ming Dynasty, “tea is cold and lowers the fire.” Since fire (inflammation) causes many diseases, could tea be effective in the prevention of many diseases? The possible prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer, metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases has been studied with contemporary scientific methods, and the results are promising. The molecular mechanisms underlining these observations will be discussed in this presentation. One of the reasons for the failure to demonstrate a disease-preventive effect of tea in some epidemiological studies is the lower quantities of tea consumption in humans. Can we increase the quantity of tea consumption to harness its health benefits without causing gastrointestinal irritation? This is a topic for further research.

Abstract
Tea, next to water is the cheapest beverage humans consume. Drinking the beverage tea has been considered a healthpromoting habit since ancient times. The modern medicinal research is providing a scientific basis for this belief. The evidence supporting the health benefits of tea drinking grows stronger with each new study that is published in the scientific literature. Tea plant Camellia sinensis has been cultivated for thousands of years and its leaves have been used for medicinal purposes. Tea is used as a popular beverage worldwide and its ingredients are now finding medicinal benefits. Encouraging data showing cancer-preventive effects of green tea from cell-culture, animal and human studies have emerged. Evidence is accumulating that black tea may have similar beneficial effects. Tea consumption has also been shown to be useful for prevention of many debilitating human diseases that include maintenance of cardiovascular and metabolic health. Various studies suggest that polyphenolic compounds present in green and black tea are associated with beneficial effects in prevention of cardiovascular diseases, particularly of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. In addition, anti-aging, antidiabetic and many other health beneficial effects associated with tea consumption are described. Evidence is accumulating that catechins and theaflavins, which are the main polyphenolic compounds of green and black tea, respectively, are responsible for most of the physiological effects of tea. This article describes the evidences from clinical and epidemiological studies in the prevention of chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular diseases and general health promotion associated with tea consumption.

Abstract
L-Theanine is an amino acid derivative primarily found in tea. It has been reported to promote relaxation and have neuroprotective effects. The present study was designed to investigate the role of oxidative stress and the status of antioxidant system in the management of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) induced brain toxicity in various rat brain regions and further to elucidate the potential role of L-Theanine in alleviating such negative effects. Aluminium administration significantly decreased the level of reduced glutathione and the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, Na(+)/K(+) ATPase, Ca(2+) ATPase and Mg(2+) ATPase and increased the level of lipid peroxidation and the activities of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase in all the brain regions when compared with control rats. Pre-treatment with L-Theanine at a dose of 200 mg/kg b.w. significantly increased the antioxidant status and activities of membrane bound enzymes and also decreased the level of LPO and the activities of marker enzymes, when compared with aluminium induced rats. Aluminium induction also caused histopathological changes in the cerebral cortex, cerebellum and hippocampus of rat brain which was reverted by pretreatment with L-Theanine. The present study clearly indicates the potential of L-Theanine in counteracting the damage inflicted by aluminium on rat brain regions.

Abstract
Several studies have suggested that tea consumption might protect against the development and progression of cardiovascular disease, one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The endothelium plays a pivotal role in arterial homeostasis. Reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability with endothelial dysfunction is considered the earliest step in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction has been considered an important and independent predictor of future development of cardiovascular risk and events. The association between brachial NO-dependent flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and cardiovascular disease risk has been investigated in several prospective studies, suggesting that FMD is inversely associated with future cardiovascular events. Dietary flavonoids and tea consumption have been described to improve endothelial function and FMD. A proposed mechanism by which dietary flavonoids could affect FMD is that they improve the bioactivity of the endothelium-derived vasodilator NO by enhancing NO synthesis or by decreasing superoxide-mediated NO breakdown. This could be of clinical relevance and may suggest a mechanistic explanation for the reduced risk of cardiovascular events and stroke observed among tea drinkers in the different studies. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the relation between tea consumption and cardiovascular disease, with a focus on clinical implications resulting from the beneficial effects of tea consumption on endothelial function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present analysis was conducted in response to inconsistent epidemiologic studies on the relation between consumption of tea and cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE We undertook a literature review of the consistency and strength of the associations between tea and cardiovascular diseases on the basis of published observational studies and meta-analyses addressing tea or tea flavonoids and cardiovascular disease risk. DESIGN We performed a search in 3 databases for meta-analyses and compared them with studies they subsumed. We performed an additional search for subsequent studies to determine whether the conclusions were consistent. RESULTS Many epidemiologic studies have been conducted and summarized in 5 meta-analyses on either tea consumption or flavonoid consumption and cardiovascular disease or the subset of stroke. Heterogeneity of effect was seen when the outcome included all cardiovascular diseases. In the case of stroke, a consistent, dose-response association with tea consumption on both incidence and mortality was noted with RRs of 0.80 (95% CI: 0.65, 0.98) for flavonoids and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.73, 0.85) for tea when high and low intakes were compared or the addition of 3 cups/d was estimated. CONCLUSION Thus, the strength of this evidence supports the hypothesis that tea consumption might lower the risk of stroke.

Abstract
Aims Tea (green, oolong, and black) is the second most widely consumed beverage worldwide, second only to water. Aside from a few reported adverse effects, tea, particularly green tea, appears to be beneficial for human health. In the case described herein, a male experienced several transient ischemic attack-like symptoms immediately following the consumption of a cup of high quality oolong tea. A thorough medical evaluation uncovered no evidence of such an attack and leads to the suggestion of a heretofore unreported response to oolong tea. Presentation of Case A 72-year old male with hypertension and atrial fibrillation, who takes valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide to control hypertension and warfarin to reduce the risk of thrombosis and thromboembolism, presented at the emergency room of a local hospital describing several transient ischemic attack-like symptoms immediately after consuming a cup of oolong tea. His symptoms included presyncope, disequilibrium, bilateral hand parathesias, mild dysphasia, and visual problems (but apparently not presbyopia or amaurosis fugax), all of which had disappeared in approximately two hours after drinking the tea. (Mild presyncope was previously noted by the patient when ingesting a strong green tea.) No unusual features emerged from his physical examination, and his blood work was unremarkable except for elevation of his partial thromboplastin time (39 sec) and prothrombin time (22.5 sec), giving an international reference of 2.0, all consistent with the effects of warfarin. A battery of tests by the emergency room physician, a cardiologist, and a neurologist, e.g. electrocardiogram, brain computerized tomography, 2-dimensional transthoracic echocardiogram, brain magnetic resonance imaging, with and without 20 ml Gadolinium, and a magnetic resonance angiogram, confirmed the earlier diagnosis of atrial fibrillation but disclosed no additional malfunction in his heart. His brain showed no evidence of a prior hemorrhage, and his carotid arteries were clear. Methodology and Results Analysis of the oolong tea by high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry identified the major catechins and two methylxanthines, caffeine and theophylline, as well as other constituents, but there was no evidence of any extraneous chemicals that could lead to the symptoms. Conclusion In view of the rapid onset of symptoms after the consumption of oolong tea, bilateral as opposed to unilateral parathesis, and the absence of any evidence of a hemorrhage or the presence of impurities in the tea, we suggest that the transient ischemic attack-like symptoms could possibly be attributable to one or more components of the oolong tea and was not an atypical magnetic resonance imaging-negative transient ischemic attack.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To ascertain the relationship between tea drinking and the risk of ovarian cancer among southern Chinese women, a case-control study was conducted in southern China during 2006-2008. METHODS Five hundred incident patients with histologically confirmed epithelial carcinoma of the ovary and 500 controls (mean age 59 years) were recruited from four public hospitals in Guangzhou. Information on frequency, quantity and duration of tea drinking, amount of dried tea leaves brewed, together with habitual diet and lifestyle characteristics, was obtained face-to-face from participants using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between tea consumption variables and the ovarian cancer risk. RESULTS The control subjects reported higher tea consumption levels and prevalence (78.8%) than the ovarian cancer patients (51.4%). Regular drinking of green tea, black tea and/or oolong tea was associated with a lower risk of ovarian cancer, the adjusted odds ratio being 0.29 (95% confidence interval 0.22-0.39) after accounting for confounding factors. When compared with non-drinkers, apparent inverse dose-response relationships were observed for years of drinking, number of cups and quantity of tea consumed, as well as amount of dried tea leaves brewed (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Regular tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer for southern Chinese women.

Abstract
Tea and coffee have been associated with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), both positively and negatively. Epidemiological data suggest that black and green tea may reduce the risk of both coronary heart disease and stroke by between 10 and 20%. Experimental and clinical trial data generally indicate either neutral or beneficial effects on risk factors and pathways linked to the development of CVD. Controversy still exists regarding the effects of coffee, where there have been concerns regarding associations with hypercholesterolaemia, hypertension and myocardial infarction. However, long term moderate intake of coffee is not associated with detrimental effects in healthy individuals and may even protect against the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The detrimental effects of coffee may be associated with the acute pressor effects, most likely due to caffeine at high daily intakes, and lipids from boiled coffee can contribute to raised serum cholesterol. Genetic polymorphisms in enzymes involved in uptake, metabolism and excretion of tea and coffee compounds are also associated with differential biological effects. Potential mechanisms by which tea and coffee phytochemicals can exert effects for CVD protection include the regulation of vascular tone through effects on endothelial function, improved glucose metabolism, increased reverse cholesterol transport and inhibition of foam cell formation, inhibition of oxidative stress, immunomodulation and effects on platelet function (adhesion and activation, aggregation and clotting). The phytochemical compounds in tea and coffee and their metabolites are suggested to influence protective endogenous pathways by modulation of gene-expression. It is not known exactly which compounds are responsible for the suggestive protective effects of tea and coffee. Although many biologically active compounds have been identified with known biological effects, tea and coffee contain many unidentified compounds with potential bioactivity.

Abstract
Cerebrovascular diseases are the second cause of mortality in the world, and hypertension is considered a main risk factor for occurrence of stroke. The mechanisms responsible for the increased stroke risk remain unclear. However, dietary interventions have been applied in the management and treatment of their risk factors, which include increased blood pressure levels, obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. Further studies should be conducted to assess the effects of carotenoids, flavonoids, n-3 polyunsaturated fats, and lower salt and high glycemic index intake in risk of stroke.

Abstract
We recently featured Chinese dietary patterns that were associated with obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. In this study, we examined the association of those dietary patterns and risk of stroke among 26,276 Chinese adults aged ≥45 y by using data from the 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey and explored whether those associations were mediated by obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and other cardiovascular risk factors. The traditional southern Chinese dietary pattern, characterized by high intakes of rice and vegetables and moderate intakes in animal foods, was related to the lowest prevalence of stroke. Compared to the traditional southern dietary pattern, the traditional northern Chinese dietary pattern, characterized by high intakes of refined cereal products, potatoes, and salted vegetables, was associated with an elevated risk of stroke [OR = 1.96 (95% CI = 1.48-2.60); P < 0.0001]. Adjustment for conventional cardiovascular risk factors did not appreciably change the association [multivariate adjusted OR = 1.59 (95%CI = 1.16-2.17); P = 0.004]. The Western dietary pattern characterized by high consumption of beef, fruit, eggs, poultry, and seafood is also associated with an elevated risk of stroke [OR = 2.36 (95%CI = 1.82-3.06); P < 0.0001], but the associations became nonsignificant after adjustment for obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. In conclusion, we found that the traditional southern dietary pattern was related to low prevalence of stroke and the traditional northern dietary pattern was associated with an increased stroke risk. The Western dietary patterns also association with high risk of stroke, which was largely mediated by obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia.

Abstract
We previously reported that in healthy mouse cerebral arteries, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) produces H₂O₂, leading to endothelium-dependent dilation. In contrast, thromboxane A₂ (TXA₂), a potent pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory endogenous vasoconstrictor, is associated with eNOS dysfunction. Our objectives were to elucidate whether (1) the cerebrovascular eNOS-H₂O₂ pathway was sensitive to oxidative stress associated with aging and dyslipidemia and (2) TXA₂ contributed to cerebral eNOS dysfunction. Atherosclerotic (ATX = LDLR(-/-); hApoB(+/+)) and wild-type (WT) control mice were used at 3 and 12 months old (m/o). Three-m/o ATX mice were treated with the cardio-protective polyphenol catechin for 9 months. Dilations to ACh and the simultaneous eNOS-derived H₂O₂ production were recorded in isolated pressurized cerebral arteries. The age-associated decrease in cerebral eNOS-H₂O₂ pathway observed in WT was premature in ATX mice, decreasing at 3 m/o and abolished at 12 m/o. Thromboxane synthase inhibition by furegrelate increased dilations at 12 months in WT and at 3 and 12 months in ATX mice, suggesting an anti-dilatory role of TXA₂ with age hastened by dyslipidemia. In addition, the non-selective NADP(H) oxidase inhibitor apocynin improved the eNOS-H₂O₂ pathway only in 12-m/o ATX mice. Catechin normalized the function of this pathway, which became sensitive to L-NNA and insensitive to furegrelate or apocynin; catechin also prevented the rise in TXA₂ synthase expression. In conclusion, the age-dependent cerebral endothelial dysfunction is precocious in dyslipidemia and involves TXA₂ production that limits eNOS activity. Preventive catechin treatment reduced the impact of endogenous TXA₂ on the control of cerebral tone and maintained eNOS function.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence for a protective effect of tea consumption against cardiovascular disease. This review summarizes the available epidemiological data providing evidence for and against such an effect. We also review observational and intervention studies that investigated an effect of tea and tea extracts on cardiovascular risk factors, including blood pressure, serum lipids, diabetes mellitus, and obesity. Finally, we review potential mechanisms of benefit, including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-proliferative effects, as well as favorable effects on endothelial function. Overall, the observational data suggest a benefit, but results are mixed and likely confounded by lifestyle and background dietary factors. The weight of evidence indicates favorable effects on risk factors and a number of plausible mechanisms have been elucidated in experimental and translational human studies. Despite the growing body evidence, it remains uncertain whether tea consumption should be recommended to the general population or to patients as a strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
Severe dyslipidemia and the associated oxidative stress could accelerate the age-related decline in cerebrovascular endothelial function and cerebral blood flow (CBF), leading to neuronal loss and impaired learning abilities. We hypothesized that a chronic treatment with the polyphenol catechin would prevent endothelial dysfunction, maintain CBF responses, and protect learning abilities in atherosclerotic (ATX) mice. We treated ATX (C57Bl/6-LDLR(-/-)hApoB(+/+); 3 mo old) mice with catechin (30 mg · kg(-1) · day(-1)) for 3 mo, and C57Bl/6 [wild type (WT), 3 and 6 mo old] mice were used as controls. ACh- and flow-mediated dilations (FMD) were recorded in pressurized cerebral arteries. Basal CBF and increases in CBF induced by whisker stimulation were measured by optical coherence tomography and Doppler, respectively. Learning capacities were evaluated with the Morris water maze test. Compared with 6-mo-old WT mice, cerebral arteries from 6-mo-old ATX mice displayed a higher myogenic tone, lower responses to ACh and FMD, and were insensitive to NOS inhibition (P < 0.05), suggesting endothelial dysfunction. Basal and increases in CBF were lower in 6-mo-old ATX than WT mice (P < 0.05). A decline in the learning capabilities was also observed in ATX mice (P < 0.05). Catechin 1) reduced cerebral superoxide staining (P < 0.05) in ATX mice, 2) restored endothelial function by reducing myogenic tone, improving ACh- and FMD and restoring the sensitivity to nitric oxide synthase inhibition (P < 0.05), 3) increased the changes in CBF during stimulation but not basal CBF, and 4) prevented the decline in learning abilities (P < 0.05). In conclusion, catechin treatment of ATX mice prevents cerebrovascular dysfunctions and the associated decline in learning capacities.
