Abstract
Background Reading and math constitute important academic skills, and as such, reading disability (RD or developmental dyslexia) and math disability (MD or developmental dyscalculia) can have negative consequences for children's educational progress. Although RD and MD are different learning disabilities, they frequently co-occur. Separate theories have implicated the cerebellum and its cortical connections in RD and in MD, suggesting that children with combined reading and math disability (RD + MD) may have altered cerebellar function and disrupted functional connectivity between the cerebellum and cortex during reading and during arithmetic processing. Methods Here we compared Control and RD + MD groups during a reading task as well as during an arithmetic task on (i) activation of the cerebellum, (ii) background functional connectivity, and (iii) task-dependent functional connectivity between the cerebellum and the cortex. Results The two groups (Control, RD + MD) did not differ for either task (reading, arithmetic) on any of the three measures (activation, background functional connectivity, task-dependent functional connectivity). Conclusion These results do not support theories that children's deficits in reading and math originate in the cerebellum.

Abstract
Two subtypes of progressive apraxia of speech (PAOS) have been recognized: phonetic PAOS (PAOS_ph) where speech output is dominated by distorted sound substitutions and prosodic PAOS (PAOS_pr) which is dominated by segmented speech. We investigate whether these PAOS subtypes have different white matter microstructural abnormalities measured by diffusion tensor tractography. Thirty-three patients with PAOS (21 PAOS_ph and 12 PAOS_pr) and 19 healthy controls were recruited by the Neurodegenerative Research Group (NRG) and underwent diffusion MRI. Using a whole-brain tractography approach, fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were extracted for cortico-cortical, cortico-subcortical, cortical-projection, and cerebello-cortical white matter tracts. A hierarchical linear model was applied to assess tract-level FA and MD across groups. Both PAOS_ph and PAOS_pr showed degeneration of cortico-cortical, cortico-subcortical, cortical-projection, and cerebello-cortical white matter tracts compared to controls. However, degeneration of the body of corpus callosum, superior thalamic radiation, and superior cerebellar peduncle was greater in PAOS_pr compared to PAOS_ph, and degeneration of the inferior segment of the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) was greater in PAOS_ph compared to PAOS_pr. Worse parkinsonism correlated with greater degeneration of cortico-cortical and cortico-subcortical tracts in PAOS_ph. Apraxia of speech articulatory error score correlated with degeneration of the superior cerebellar peduncle tracts in PAOS_pr. Phonetic and prosodic PAOS involve the compromise of a similar network of tracts, although there are connectivity differences between types. Whereas clinical parameters are the current gold standard to distinguish PAOS subtypes, our results allege the use of DTI-based tractography as a supplementary method to investigate such variants.

Abstract
Numerous studies have been devoted to neural mechanisms of a variety of linguistic tasks (e.g. speech comprehension and production). To date, however, whether and how the neural patterns underlying different linguistic tasks are similar or differ remains elusive. In this study, we compared the neural patterns underlying 3 linguistic tasks mainly concerning speech comprehension and production. To address this, multivariate regression approaches with lesion/disconnection symptom mapping were applied to data from 216 stroke patients with damage to the left hemisphere. The results showed that lesion/disconnection patterns could predict both poststroke scores of speech comprehension and production tasks; these patterns exhibited shared regions on the temporal pole of the left hemisphere as well as unique regions contributing to the prediction for each domain. Lower scores in speech comprehension tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the superior temporal gyrus and middle temporal gyrus, while lower scores in speech production tasks were associated with lesions/abnormalities in the left inferior parietal lobe and frontal lobe. These results suggested an important role of the ventral and dorsal stream pathways in speech comprehension and production (i.e. supporting the dual stream model) and highlighted the applicability of the novel multivariate disconnectome-based symptom mapping in cognitive neuroscience research.

Abstract
Despite decades of prior research, the mechanisms for how skilled reading develops remain elusive. Numerous studies have identified word recognition and oral language ability as key components to explain later reading comprehension performance. However, these components alone do not fully explain differences in reading achievement. There is ongoing work exploring other candidate processes important for reading, such as the domain-general cognitive ability of executive function (EF). Here, we summarize our work on the behavioral and neurobiological connections between EF and reading and present preliminary neuroimaging findings from ongoing work. Together, these studies suggest 1) that EF plays a supportive and perhaps indirect role in reading achievement and 2) that EF-related brain regions interface with the reading and language networks. While further work is needed to dissect the specifics of how EF interacts with reading, these studies begin to reveal the complex role that EF plays in reading development.

Abstract
Understanding language requires readers and listeners to cull meaning from fast-unfolding messages that often contain conflicting cues pointing to incompatible ways of interpreting the input (e.g., "The cat was chased by the mouse"). This article reviews mounting evidence from multiple methods demonstrating that cognitive control plays an essential role in resolving conflict during language comprehension. How does cognitive control accomplish this task? Psycholinguistic proposals have conspicuously failed to address this question. We introduce an account in which cognitive control aids language processing when cues conflict by sending top-down biasing signals that strengthen the interpretation supported by the most reliable evidence available. We also provide a computationally plausible model that solves the critical problem of how cognitive control "knows" which way to direct its biasing signal by allowing linguistic knowledge itself to issue crucial guidance. Such a mental architecture can explain a range of experimental findings, including how moment-to-moment shifts in cognitive-control state-its level of activity within a person-directly impact how quickly and successfully language comprehension is achieved.

Abstract
Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common craniofacial malformations. Overall, 40–80% of CLP patients have varying degrees of articulation problems after palatoplasty. Previous studies revealed abnormal articulation-related brain function in CLP patients. However, the association between articulation disorders and cortical structure development in CLP patients remains unclear. Twenty-six CLP adolescents (aged 5–14 years; mean 8.88 years; female/male 8/18), twenty-three CLP adults (aged 18–35 years; mean 23.35 years; female/male 6/17), thirty-seven healthy adolescents (aged 5–16 years; mean 9.89 years; female/male 5/16), and twenty-two healthy adults (aged 19–37 years; mean 24.41 years; female/male 19/37) took part in the experiment. The current study aims to investigate developmental changes in cortical structures in CLP patients with articulation disorders using both structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Our results reveal the distinct distribution of abnormal cortical structures in adolescent and adult CLP patients. We also found that the developmental pattern of cortical structures in CLP patients differed from the pattern in healthy controls (delayed cortical development in the left lingual gyrus (t = 4.02, cluster-wise p < 0.05), inferior temporal cortex (z = −4.36, cluster-wise p < 0.05) and right precentral cortex (t = 4.19, cluster-wise p < 0.05)). Mediation analysis identified the cortical thickness of the left pericalcarine cortex as the mediator between age and articulation function (partial mediation effect (a*b = −0.48), 95% confident interval (−0.75, −0.26)). In conclusion, our results demonstrate an abnormal developmental pattern of cortical structures in CLP patients, which is directly related to their articulation disorders.
