Statistical inference for dependence networks in topological data analysis

Topological data analysis (TDA) provide tools that are becoming increasingly popular for analyzing multivariate time series data. One key aspect in analyzing multivariate time series is dependence between components. One application is on brain signal analysis. In particular, various dependence patterns in brain networks may be linked to specific tasks and cognitive processes. These dependence patterns may be altered by various neurological and cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because there is no ground-truth with known dependence patterns in real brain signals, testing new TDA methods on multivariate time series is still a challenge. Our goal here is to develop novel statistical inference procedures via simulations. Simulations are useful for generating some null distributions of a test statistic (for hypothesis testing), forming confidence regions, and for evaluating the performance of proposed TDA methods. To the best of our knowledge, there are no methods that simulate multivariate time series data with potentially complex user-specified connectivity patterns. In this paper we present a novel approach to simulate multivariate time series with specific number of cycles/holes in its dependence network. Furthermore, we also provide a procedure for generating higher dimensional topological features.

Edges in brain networks: Contributions to models of structure and function

Network models describe the brain as sets of nodes and edges that represent its distributed organization. So far, most discoveries in network neuroscience have prioritized insights that highlight distinct groupings and specialized functional contributions of network nodes. Importantly, these functional contributions are determined and expressed by the web of their interrelationships, formed by network edges. Here, we underscore the important contributions made by brain network edges for understanding distributed brain organization. Different types of edges represent different types of relationships, including connectivity and similarity among nodes. Adopting a specific definition of edges can fundamentally alter how we analyze and interpret a brain network. Furthermore, edges can associate into collectives and higher order arrangements, describe time series, and form edge communities that provide insights into brain network topology complementary to the traditional node-centric perspective. Focusing on the edges, and the higher order or dynamic information they can provide, discloses previously underappreciated aspects of structural and functional network organization.

Multiparametric EEG analysis of brain network dynamics during neonatal seizures

BACKGROUND

One of the most challenging issues in paediatric neurology is the diagnosis of neonatal seizures, whose delayed treatment may affect the neurodevelopment of the newborn. Formulation of the correct diagnosis is conditioned by the high number of perceptually or automatically detected false positives.

NEW METHOD

New methodologies are proposed to assess neonatal seizures trend over time. Our approach is based on the analysis of standardized trends of two properties of the brain network: the Synchronizabilty (S) and the degree of phase synchronicity given by the Circular Omega Complexity (COC). Qualitative and quantitative methods based on network dynamics allow differentiating seizure events from interictal periods and seizure-free patients.

RESULTS

The methods were tested on a public dataset of labelled neonatal seizures. COC shows significant differences among seizure and non-seizure events (p-value <0.001, Cohen's d 0.86). Combining S and COC in standardized temporal instants provided a reliable description of the physiological behaviour of the brain's network during neonatal seizures.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S)

Few of the existing network methods propose an operative way for carrying their analytical approach into the diagnostic process of neonatal seizures. Our methods offer a simple representation of brain network dynamics easily implementable and understandable also by less experienced staff.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings confirm the usefulness of the evaluation of brain network dynamics over time for a better understanding and interpretation of the complex mechanisms behind neonatal seizures. The proposed methods could also reliably support existing seizure detectors as a post-processing step in doubtful cases.
