Cueing the Necker cube: Pupil dilation reflects the viewing-from-above constraint in bistable perception

Vertical anisotropy in lightness perception not caused by lighting assumption

Our recent study found an illusory effect whereby an image of an upward-facing gray panel appears darker than its 180-degree rotated image. We attributed this inversion effect to the observer's implicit assumption that light from above is more intense than light from below. This paper aims to explore the possibility that low-level visual anisotropy also contributes to the effect. In Experiment 1, we investigated whether the effect could be observed even when the position, the contrast polarity, and the existence of the edge were manipulated. In Experiments 2 and 3, the effect was further examined using stimuli that contained no depth cues. Experiment 4 confirmed the effect using stimuli of even simpler configuration. The results of all the experiments demonstrated that brighter edges on the upper side of the target make it appear lighter, indicating that low-level anisotropy contributes to the inversion effect, even without depth orientation information. However, darker edges on the upper side of the target produced ambiguous results. We speculate that the perceived lightness of the target might be affected by two kinds of vertical anisotropy, one of which is dependent on contrast polarity while the other is independent of it. Moreover, the results also replicated the previous finding that the lighting assumption contributes to perceived lightness. Overall, the present study demonstrates that both low-level vertical anisotropy and mid-level lighting assumption influence lightness.

The lateralized flash-lag illusion: A psychophysical and pupillometry study

The flash-lag illusion (FLI) is a visual phenomenon where a flashed object, either co-localized or in physical alignment with another continuously moving object, is perceived to lag behind the path of the moving object. In the present study, we reveal an anisotropy of the FLI between the lateral visual fields that was expressed psychophysically as different points of subjective equality, depending on the hemifield in which the stimuli appeared. Specifically, the study confirmed that, as seen in two previous studies, the FLI was significantly larger in the left visual field (LVF) than in the right (RVF). In addition, pupil dilations were larger in the RVF than in the LVF as well as returning to baseline levels more rapidly in the LVF. We interpret these findings as converging on revealing more efficient spatial and attentional processing and, in turn, extrapolation of motion in the LVF/right hemisphere than in the RVF/left hemisphere.

Reversible-figure perception: Why is voluntary control limited?

Observers can voluntarily avoid reversals of an ambiguous, reversible figure, extending the duration of an intended percept. This is usually attributed to high-level, top-down attentional processes. However, voluntary control is limited. Reversals occur despite attempts to avoid them. In two experiments, observers demonstrated significant, but limited, voluntary control over Necker cube perception. Cube size and cube completeness, variables associated with stimulus-driven processes involving neural adaptation, influenced the frequency of reversals regardless of observers' intentions. Results are consistent with the hybrid hypothesis that both top-down and bottom-up processes contribute to Necker-cube perception and support the hypothesis that the contribution of bottom-up processes is responsible for the limitation on voluntary control.

Backward and forward neck tilt affects perceptual bias when interpreting ambiguous figures

The relationships between posture and perception have already been investigated in several studies. However, it is still unclear how perceptual bias and experiential contexts of human perception affect observers’ perception when posture is changed. In this study, we hypothesized that a change in the perceptual probability caused by perceptual bias also depends on posture. In order to verify this hypothesis, we used the Necker cube with two types of appearance, from above and below, although the input is constant, and investigated the change of the probability of perceptual content. Specifically, we asked observers their perception of the appearance of the Necker cube placed at any of the five angles in the space of virtual reality. There were two patterns of neck movement, vertical and horizontal. During the experiment, pupil diameter, one of the cognitive indices, was also measured. Results showed that during the condition of looking down vertically, the probability of the viewing-from-above perception of the Necker cube was significantly greater than during the condition of looking up. Interestingly, the pupillary results were also consistent with the probability of the perception. These results indicate that perception was modulated by the posture of the neck and suggest that neck posture is incorporated into ecological constraints.

Temporal dynamics of auditory bistable perception correlated with fluctuation of baseline pupil size

A dynamic neural network change, accompanied by cognitive shifts such as internal perceptual alternation in bistable stimuli, is reconciled by the discharge of noradrenergic locus coeruleus neurons. Transient pupil dilation as a consequence of the reconciliation with the neural network in bistable perception has been reported to precede the reported perceptual alternation. Here, we found that baseline pupil size, an index of temporal fluctuation of arousal level over a longer range of timescales than that for the transient pupil changes, relates to the frequency of perceptual alternation in auditory bistability. Baseline pupil size was defined as the mean pupil diameter over a period of 1 s prior to the task requirement (i.e., before the observation period for counting the perceptual alternations in Experiment 1 and reporting whether participants experienced the perceptual alternations in Experiment 2). The results showed that the baseline pupil size monotonically increased with an increasing number of perceptual alternations and its occurrence probability. Furthermore, a cross‐correlation analysis indicates that baseline pupil size predicted perceptual alternation at least 35 s before the behavioral response and that the overall correspondence between pupil size and perceptual alternation was maintained over a sustained time window of 45 s at minimum. The overall results suggest that variability of baseline pupil size reflects the stochastic dynamics of arousal fluctuation in the brain related to bistable perception.

A Bird's eye view from below: Activity in the temporo-parietal junction predicts from-above Necker Cube percepts

The temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) consistently emerges in other-regarding behavior, including tasks probing affective phenomena such as morality and empathy. Yet the TPJ is also recruited in processes with no affective or social component, such as visuo-spatial processing and mathematical cognition. We present serendipitous findings from a perceptual decision-making task on a bistable stimulus, the Necker Cube, performed in an MRI scanner. The stimulus in question is a transparent, wire-frame cube that evokes spontaneous switches in perception. Individuals can view the cube from below or from above, though a consistent bias is shown towards seeing the cube from above. We replicate this bias, finding participants spend more time in the from-above percept. However, in testing for BOLD differences between percept orientations, we found robust responses in bilateral TPJ for the from-above > from-below perceptual state. We speculate that this neural response comes from the sensory incongruence of viewing an object from above while lying supine in the scanner. We further speculate that the TPJ resolves this incongruence by facilitating an egocentric projection. Such a function would explain the TPJ's ubiquitous response to other-regarding, visuo-spatial and mathematical cognition, as all these phenomena demand an ability to ambulate through the coordinate space. Our findings suggest the TPJ may not play a specific role in social or moral components of other-regarding behavior, such as altruism, and further indirectly suggest that "pure", allocentric altruism may not correlate with the TPJ. Results further have implications on how the TPJ may be modulated by activities such as flight or drone operation. Finally, this study highlights the possible need for congruence between stimuli and body position in neuroimaging studies.
