Abstract
Twenty-four-hour urinary hydroxyproline excretion (HOP) (normal values: 6–22 mg/day/m2) was measured by the Hypronosticon test in 50 untreated patients with plasma cell myeloma. At diagnosis, HOP was elevated in 36 of 50 patients (72 %) with a mean value of 35.9 mg/day/m2. Extent of bone lesions and clinical stage were accurately assessed in all patients. Higher HOP values were found in patients with a higher degree of bone lesions (multiple lytic areas and/or destruction of skeletal segments). According to clinical stages, HOP was very elevated only in stage III (mean value: 43.7); in stages I and II the mean value (25.2) was just above the normal range. Our data indicate that HOP in multiple myeloma at diagnosis is closely related to the extension of skeletal lesions and that during the clinical course it may be useful in the follow-up of bone disease.

Abstract
Hydroxyproline was measured in 24-hr urine samples at 60 and 120 days of age in male and female broiler chickens that were prepared by the "anus praeternaturalis" technique. Twenty-four-hour urine output did not differ between females and males (32.82 +/- 1.02 ml and 33.98 +/- .54 ml, average +/- SD, respectively), whereas 24-hr urinary hydroxyproline excretion was greater in females than in males after 60 days of age. Urinary hydroxyproline excretion tended to decrease with age in males and increase with age in females. Because most of the hydroxyproline is probably derived from bone collagen, the results suggest that there are differences between mineral exchange processes in female and male chickens.

Abstract
Total excretion of hydroxyproline was measured in patients with fractures of long bones and in patients undergoing sagittal splitting of the mandible. In both patient groups excretion of hydroxyproline was twice that of normal healthy subjects. The amount of excreted hydroxyproline in patients with fractures was related to the site of the fracture, to the age of the patient, and the form of therapy. The excretion of hydroxyproline was found to be variable after wire adaptation of mandiblular osteotomy segments and after sagittal splitting without wire adaptation. Quantitative analysis of the excretion of hydroxyproline in urine does not therefore permit conclusions about the bone healing process.

Abstract
The effects of exogenous parathyroid hormone, administered for 3 days, were compared in six hyperthyroid and six hypothyroid subjects. Maximum increments were much greater in hyperthyroid than in hypothyroid subjects for serum calcium (3.5 mg/100 ml versus 1.6 mg/100 ml), urine calcium (476 mg versus 79 mg), urine hydroxyproline (56 mg versus 11 mg), and urine phosphorus (671 mg versus 192 mg). Maximum decrease in serum phosphorus (minus0.9 mg/100 ml versus minus 0.1 mg/100 ml) was also greater in hyperthyroid subjects. Serum parathyroid hormone immunoreactivity was significantly higher in hypothyroid subjects (0.48 ng/ml) that either normals (0.21 ng/ml) or hyperthyroid subjects (0.19 ng/ml). The data support the concept that excess thyroid hormone sensitizes and deficient thyroid hormone blunts the responsiveness of bone to parathyroid hormone. This may lead to a state of hypoparathyroidism in hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism in hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Abstract
A sequential study of urinary hydroxyproline was performed in 47 patients with cancer of the breast. The results have shown that hydroxyproline excretion in the urine provides a sensitive index of the early development of secondary deposits in bone from primary breast cancer. Elevation of the urinary excretion of hydroxyproline may predate by several months the radiological demonstration of osseous deposits. Sequential estimations have shown that the elevated urinary hydroxyproline excretion is persistent in patients who subsequently develop deposits in bone.

Abstract
Proline-(14)C was administered to five adult rhesus monkeys, and the degradation of collagen was followed by the excretion of hydroxyproline-(14)C. The results suggested the presence of at least three separate pools of collagen with half-lives of 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 50 to 70 days. The monkeys were killed after 44 days; at that time the specific activity of the hydroxyproline-(14)C in urine was found to be four to five times that of the hydroxyproline in soluble collagen and 81 to 93% that of hydroxyproline in insoluble collagen. The relationships between urinary hydroxyproline and the degradation of collagen were similar to those previously demonstrated in rats. Parathyroid hormone was administered daily to two of the monkeys from the 27th to the 44th day of the study. The parathyroid hormone increased the amount of hydroxyproline-(14)C excreted, but there was no significant change in the specific activity of the urinary hydroxyproline-(14)C. Since under the conditions of the experiment insoluble collagen was the only possible source of hydroxyproline-(14)C of relatively high specific activity, the results indicated that parathyroid hormone directly or indirectly increased the degradation of insoluble collagen. The results also suggested that parathyroid hormone increased the degradation of soluble collagen, but the relative magnitude of this effect was not clearly established.

Abstract
Total urinary excretion of hydroxyproline has been found to be significantly decreased in adult diabetics and was increased after hypophysectomy for diabetic retinopathy. There was no change in hydroxyproline excretion after the administration of 53 mg. of human growth hormone to one patient with hypopituitarism over a 4 day period.
