Plasma Corin: A New Biochemical Marker for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

INTRODUCTION

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a risk factor for PCOS. Corin protein has an essential role in ANP synthesis. This study aimed to evaluate corin as a sensitive biomarker for PCOS.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A case-control study was conducted with 70 PCOS patients and 70 healthy females. Plasma Corin levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

RESULTS

The median plasma corin levels in PCOS patients and controls were 1785 and 822.5 pg/mL, respectively. Plasma corin levels were significantly elevated in PCOS patients than in the controls (p < 0.001). The optimal cut-off value was set at 1186 pg/mL. The sensitivity and specificity of Corin were 100% and 97.1%, respectively. Plasma corin levels were surrogate predictors for infertility in women with PCOS. It had an odds ratio of 5.9 (95% confidence interval: 1.1-32.7) (p = 0.04). Plasma corin levels were more highly detected in patients with PCOS than in the controls.

CONCLUSION

Plasma corin level has reasonable diagnostic interpretation for PCOS. Corin appears as a worthy distinct predictor of infertility in PCOS women. Therefore, Corin may be a substantial biomarker for PCOS.

Eight-Hour Time-Restricted Feeding: A Strong Candidate Diet Protocol for First-Line Therapy in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

We aimed to investigate the effects of a 6-week program of 8 h time-restricted feeding (TRF) diet in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as determined by anthropometric, hormonal, metabolic profiles, and fecal calprotectin level. Thirty women diagnosed with PCOS underwent a 6-week 8 h TRF diet intervention. Age, anthropometric features (body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) and biochemical results were recorded. Free androgen index (FAI, defining hyperandrogenism) and the homeostatic model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Baseline (pre-diet) and 6-week post-diet findings were compared. Mean age was 25.57 ± 2.67 years. BMI (p < 0.001) and WHR (p = 0.001) were found to have significantly decreased after the diet, as well as the percentage of patients defined to have hyperandrogenism (p = 0.016). Reproductive hormone levels, FAI (p < 0.001) and HOMA-IR (p < 0.001) were improved significantly. Metabolic parameters associated with glucose and lipid profiles were also significantly improved after the diet. Additionally, fecal calprotectin levels demonstrated a significant decrease from pre-diet to post-diet (p < 0.001). In conclusion, a 6-week diet intervention with 8 h TRF may be a suitable and effective intermittent fasting protocol that can be used as a first-line option in PCOS.

Serum calprotectin levels as markers of inflammation, insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common, complex endocrine, and metabolic disorder. Inflammation has been thought to play an important role in PCOS pathogenesis in recent years, and various inflammatory markers have been investigated; however, no definite conclusion has been reached. As a multifunctional regulatory protein in different inflammatory processes, calprotectin may play a role in the etiology of PCOS. Therefore, based on this hypothesis, we aimed to determine serum calprotectin concentrations in women with PCOS and to compare them with healthy controls. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary referral center during the study period. Forty-three women (n = 43) with PCOS and 47 women (n = 47) in the control group were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum calprotectin concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compared with markers of glucose and lipid metabolism. Clinical characteristics and hormonal parameters were evaluated in both groups. Levels of serum calprotectin were measured as 347 ± 28.8 and 188 ± 15.3 ng/mL in the PCOS and healthy control groups, respectively (P = .009). The mean homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance[1] index and total testosterone levels were significantly higher in the PCOS group than in the control group (both P < .001). Spearman's correlation test demonstrated linear correlations between calprotectin and C-reactive protein, waist circumference, insulin resistance index, and total testosterone levels in the PCOS group (all P < .05). Serum calprotectin levels were higher in women with PCOS. This biomarker may be an indirect sign of insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, or chronic inflammation in women with PCOS.

Calprotectin may be positively associated with the severity of acne vulgaris

Background and objective: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common skin disease of sebaceous hair follicles. Many factors are associated with the occurrence and severity of acne, while the exact etiology remains incompletely understood. The current study was aimed to investigate the association between the severity of acne and serum zinc, copper, and calprotectin. Methods: Fifty patients with AV were recruited in the study as well as 25 healthy age and sex-matched individuals as controls. The acne severity was classified into mild (n=21), moderate (n=16), and severe acne (n=14) according to the global acne grading system (GAGS). Serum levels of zinc, acne and calprotectin were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The gained data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism software. Results: Insignificant difference was found in zinc and copper levels between controls and AV patients, except in severe AV, where the patients displayed significant elevation in serum copper level (p<0.05) as compared to that of mild AV. The calprotectin concentration was significantly higher (p<0.001) in all AV patients, when compared with healthy subjects, which was positively correlated with the disease severity. No gender difference was noted for all measured biomarkers. Conclusions: Our study suggests a possible association between calprotectin and acne inflammation, which requires validation in large-scale studies.
