Factors Influencing Parents' and Children's Misperception of Children's Weight Status: a Systematic Review of Current Research

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Misperception of children's weight status is prevalent among parents and children themselves and may impact parents' and children's health behaviors. This study was conducted in order to provide a descriptive systematic review of research on factors influencing parents' and children's misperceptions of children's weight status published in the past 5 years.

RECENT FINDINGS

Factors studied most often in relation to parents' and children's misperception included children's weight status, gender, and age, as well as parents' weight status, parental education levels and socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. Most determinants that were found to have a significant influence on misperception in parents also did in children. The literature on misperception of children's weight status is extensive. Most determinants assessed in included studies were known determinants of childhood obesity. Further research should be directed toward better understanding the impact of weight status perception (whether it is accurate or not) on health behaviors and weight gain over time.

Factors influencing obesity among preschoolers: multilevel approach

BACKGROUND

Childhood obesity is a complex and multifaceted problem involving interactions among child, family and community environment.

AIM

The purpose of this study was to examine the contributing factors to early childhood obesity within a multilevel context, including child and family, childcare setting and community.

METHODS

A cross-sectional, quantitative research design was employed. A total of 129 preschoolers and their parents in northwest Florida participated in this study. Child height and weight were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Parents and directors of preschools completed survey questionnaires to assess child/family, childcare setting and community factors, respectively. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to evaluate the association of each level of factors with child BMI z-score.

RESULTS

Twenty-one per cent of children were overweight or obese (≥85th BMI percentile). In hierarchical multiple regression, household income, parent beliefs, attitudes and practices for child feeding, family obesogenic environment, child routines (screen time on weekends, sleep hours, bedtime) and physical activity environment were significantly related to child BMI z-score.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of this study provide a broader understanding of factors that influence child BMI z-score. Shaping a non-obesogenic environment by establishing healthy routines for children in the home, childcare setting and community is essential in childhood obesity prevention.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE AND HEALTH POLICY

Paediatric nurses should routinely assess accurate parental perception of child weight, feeding style and child routines in well-child care visits. Healthcare professionals and health policymakers should enact policies that build a healthy environment for preschoolers in their childcare setting and community.

Use of the Delphi Technique to Obtain Community Input on Leading Contributors to Early Childhood Obesity in Latino Communities

INTRODUCTION

In the United States, Latino children are disproportionately affected by childhood obesity and related comorbidities. Stakeholder engagement has the potential to heighten the efficacy of interventions, thereby reducing the disparate prevalence of obesity among Latino children. The objective of this study was to identify stakeholders' opinions on factors influencing early childhood obesity in Latino children aged 0 to 5 years.

METHOD

This study used the Delphi technique to gather and prioritize stakeholders' opinions about the factors and barriers considered most influential in early (age 0-5 years) childhood obesity intervention or prevention within the Latino community. Three sequential phases were used. Participants included Latina women as well as staff from community organizations serving Denver metropolitan's Latino population.

RESULTS

Study results revealed that stakeholders value the role of the child's primary care provider in the identification of overweight children and desire more educational support to reduce intake of nonnutritious foods. Participants further determined that obesity-related knowledge gaps and affordability of healthy foods and activities were the largest barriers to helping Latino children maintain healthy weights.

CONCLUSION

Use of this stakeholder-informed data could assist in the development of future culturally tailored interventions aimed at reducing the rates of early childhood obesity in the Latino population.

Caregiver perceptions of childhood weight: demographic moderators and correlates

BACKGROUND

To examine whether ethnicity moderates the association between caregiver characteristics and perceptions of childhood weight and whether these perceptions are associated with their child's obesity status.

METHODS

Caregivers recruited from paediatricians' offices (n = 453) completed a survey about childhood health; nurses weighed and measured the children. Caregivers reported their own weight and height, demographic information about their family and made ratings of healthy weight for children in general and for their own child in particular.

RESULTS

African American caregivers were more likely to view heavier girls as healthier, but this association held only for lower income families or caregivers with higher body mass index. Hispanic caregivers were more likely to misperceive their own child's weight if either the caregiver or the child had a higher body mass index. Parents who perceived heavier weight as healthier or misperceived their own child's weight were more likely to have a child with obesity. This latter association held regardless of ethnicity.

CONCLUSION

The association between ethnicity and perceptions of healthy childhood weight are complex. The relation between caregivers' perceptions of healthy weight and their own child's obesity status, however, was similar regardless of ethnicity.
