Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the micromorphology of the hybrid layer and the dentinal surface when the dentin was prepared with an Er:YAG laser or burs, and to find if there was any difference if the time of application of the self-etching primer on the dentin prepared with an Er:YAG laser was doubled.

Adhesive Strength in Dentin Conditioned with 18% Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid versus 35% Phosphoric Acid: In Vitro Study with 1-Year Artificial Aging. Polymers (Basel) 2022; 14:polym14204291. Abstract
The success and longevity of a resin composite restoration is determined by its good bonding to the tooth structure, with the adhesion being a challenge to dentin due to its complexity and structural heterogeneity. The present study aimed to compare the adhesive strength of dentin conditioned with 18% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) versus 35% phosphoric acid (H3PO4) in human premolars. Materials and Methods: This in vitro experimental study was performed on 40 human premolars. The occlusal thirds were sectioned and randomly placed into four groups according to the type of dentin conditioning: Group 1 (control), Group 2 (18% EDTA), Group 3 (35% H3PO4) and Group 4 (18% EDTA plus 35% H3PO4). Then, 10,000 thermocycles between 5 +/− 2 °C and 55 +/− 2 °C were applied. Adhesive strength was tested by shearing with a digital universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.75 mm/min. The values obtained were analyzed in megapascals (MPa). The mean and standard deviation were used as measures of central tendency and dispersion. In addition, a one-factor intergroup ANOVA test was applied with Tukey’s post hoc test considering a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The 18% EDTA and 18% EDTA plus 35% H3PO4 showed significantly higher adhesive strength compared to the control group that did not receive dentin conditioning (p = 0.047 and p < 0.001, respectively). However, the group conditioned with 18% EDTA did not present significant differences compared to the group conditioned with 35% H3PO4 (p = 0.997). In addition, the group conditioned with 18% EDTA plus 35% H3PO4 showed significantly higher adhesive strength compared to the groups conditioned with 18% EDTA (p = 0.002) and 35% H3PO4 (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The adhesion of bulk fill resin composite to dentin was favorable when preconditioning was performed using 18% EDTA followed by 35% H3PO4. In contrast, when both etchants were used separately, the bulk fill resin composite showed similar bond strength values in both cases, but significantly lower compared to their sequential application.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of the bonding agent application method on the dentin bond durability of a two-step adhesive utilizing a universal-adhesive-derived primer. The bonding durability of a universal adhesive was compared with those of two conventional two-step adhesives by shear bond strength testing after thermal cycling. The primer was applied (with or without phosphoric acid pre-etching), and the specimens were divided into three groups based on the bonding agent application method used as follows: (i) strong air-flow application, (ii) gentle air-flow application, and (iii) gentle air-flow + second bonding application. The shear bond strength was determined after thermal cycling. All the factors (bonding agent application method, adhesive system, and storage condition) significantly influenced the dentin shear bond strength both with and without phosphoric acid pre-etching. The specimens exposed to gentle air-flow showed a higher shear bond strength than did those exposed to strong air-flow and gentle air-flow + second bonding. The bond durability of the tested adhesive systems was influenced by the bonding agent application method, and this trend was material dependent. The G2-Bond Universal exhibited the same or greater dentin bond durability to the other two-step adhesive systems.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of flavonoids and calcium phosphate ion clusters (CPIC) on dentin bonding stability. Seven experimental solutions were synthesized using icaritin (ICT), fisetin (FIS), silibinin (SIB), CPIC, and combinations of one of three flavonoids and CPIC (ICT + C, FIS + C, SIB + C). The experimental solutions were applied to demineralized dentin prior to the application of a universal adhesive. A group without any experimental solution served as a control. Dentin specimens pretreated with the experimental solutions were assayed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage were evaluated at 24 h and after 10,000 thermocycles. FIS and ICT + C showed significantly higher µTBS than the control group at 24 h. CPIC, ICT + C, FIS + C, and SIB + C showed significantly higher µTBS than the control group after thermocycling. After thermocycling, silver infiltration into the hybrid layer and interfacial gaps was more noticeable in the control group than in the other groups. The FTIR spectra revealed the formation of apatitic minerals in the demineralized dentin in the flavonoid and CPIC combination groups. The pretreatment of demineralized dentin with flavonoids and CPIC improved dentin bonding stability. The flavonoid and CPIC combinations preserved dentin bond strength.

Abstract
The pretreatment of dentin with cross-linking agents during bonding procedures has been proposed to improve the mechanical properties of the collagen in the hybrid layer and reduce the biodegradation of the adhesive interface. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of pretreatment with two carbodiimides on the dentin bond strength of universal adhesives, after thermocycling. Three universal adhesives in the self-etching mode were used (Single Bond Universal-SBU, Clearfil Universal-CLU and Ambar Universal-ABU). A self-etching adhesive system (Clearfil SE Bond-CSB) was used as control. Two carbodiimides, 1-ethyl-3-(3'-dimethylaminopropyl)-carbodiimide (EDC) and N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), were applied for 1 min. The excess solution was removed with absorbent paper and the universal adhesives were applied. The specimens were stored for 24 h in distilled water at 37 °C or 10,000 thermal cycles (5-55 °C, 30 s) and then were prepared for microtensile bond strength test (n = 4 teeth, average of 21 sticks per group). Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's (α = 5%). After 24 h, SBU and CSB had statistically similar bond strength values for the control groups (22.07 ± 9.03 and 19.82 ± 7.28 MPa), with EDC (30.21 ± 11.30 and 19.67 ± 5.36 MPa) and DCC (30.12 ± 13.43 and 19.82 ± 7.28 MPa) pretreatments (p > 0.05). The use of EDC (32.57 ± 9.60 MPa) and DCC (24.71 ± 9.87 MPa) showed statistically higher bond strength for CLU than for the control group (14.62 ± 6.16 MPa; p < 0.05). After thermocycling, the SBU, CLU, and CSB groups showed statistically similar bond strengths with the use of EDC (27.08 ± 8.44; 18.74 ± 5.41; and 24.55 ± 10.43 MPa) and without the use of cross linkers (20.06 ± 7.99; 22.55 ± 9.04; and 26.54 ± 10.13 MPa; p > 0.05). Groups tested after 24 h in distilled water presented higher bond strength than those submitted to thermocycling. It can be concluded that the use of cross linkers influenced the immediate bond strength of the universal adhesives, and this was dependent on the combination of the adhesive system and type of carbodiimide. The use of EDC increased the immediate bond strength of CLU. DCC increased the bond strength of ABU at 24 h, but the values were lower than those of the control group after aging for three out of the four adhesives.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the origin of initiation of hybrid layer biodegradation. Ninety caries-free human third molars were divided into three surface groups: enamel, dentin, and NaOCl-treated dentin. (n = 30/group) Each group was divided into three subgroups (n = 10/group) of luting resin materials with etch-and-rinse; self-etch and self-adhesive systems. Resin composite blocks and sticks were fabricated and adhered onto dentin and enamel surfaces. The bond strength values were evaluated with micro shear test and statistical analysis were made. On the other hand, teeth were sectioned with a slow-speed saw into multiple beams. After thermocycling, samples were kept in 50% silver nitrate solution. Samples were analyzed with SEM in back-scattered mode. According to the micro-shear bond tests, higher bond strength values were observed in etch-and-rinse system. Bond strength values in self-adhesive and etch-and-rinse groups were significantly higher than self-etch groups in dentin surface and dentin surface treatment with NaOCl. Back-scattered scanning electron microscope results showed that, different degradation mechanism was observed. The present study indicates that, due to the acid etching in dentin, collagen biodegradation was observed within the hybrid layer. On the enamel surfaces, resin degradation was related with resin monomers in adhesive systems.

Abstract
This study evaluated an experimental two-step self-etch adhesive (BZF-29, BZF) by comparing it with a reference two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil Megabond 2, MB) and a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond, GP) for microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and resin-dentin interfacial characteristics. Twenty-four human third molars were used for the μTBS test. Bonded peripheral dentin slices were separated to observe the resin-dentin interface and measure the adhesive layer thickness with SEM. μTBS data of the central beams were obtained after 24 h and 6 months of water storage. Fracture modes were determined using a stereomicroscope and SEM. Nine additional third molars were used to determine the elastic modulus (E) employing an ultra microhardness tester. Water storage did not affect μTBS of the tested adhesives (p > 0.05). μTBS of BZF and MB were similar but significantly higher than GP (p < 0.05). BZF achieved the highest adhesive layer thickness, while GP the lowest. E of BZF and MB were comparable but significantly lower than GP (p < 0.05). Except for GP, the predominant fracture mode was nonadhesive. The superior bonding performance of BZF and MB could be attributed to their better mechanical property and increased adhesive thickness imparting better stress relief at the interface.

Abstract
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to analyze 4-META resin and enamel that are debonded at an adhesive interface. The XPS spectra showed two chemical states for Ca: one resulted from Ca of hydroxyapatite and the other, an unknown chemical state, suggested that Ca was chemically bonded with 4-META. We postulate that for a chemical reaction of 4-META and hydroxyapatite, the chemical structure of carboxyl groups will resemble that of calcium phthalate. Hence, calcium phthalate was used as a reference material. Additionally, the spectra obtained from the adhesive interface and the mixture of calcium phthalate with hydroxyapatite particles were compared using peak deconvolution analysis. XPS analysis revealed that the chemical bond of 4-META with enamel resembled the chemical state of Ca in calcium phthalate. Consequently, we suggest that Ca of the enamel and the carboxyl group of 4-META were chelate-bonded at the interface.

Abstract
Interfaces between dentin, enamel and luting agents were characterized using low vacuum Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). After smear layer creation, one of three luting agents (RelyX Unicem 2, Clearfil SA Cement and Panavia F 2.0/ED Primer II) was applied on 60 enamel-dentin specimens and dual-cured or self-cured. Specimens were polished (Experiment 1) and subsequently demineralized and deproteinized (Experiment 2). Adhesive interfaces were analyzed (low vacuum SEM, ×3000). Presence of an interdiffusion zone, tag-like structures (dentin) and marginal gaps (enamel) were assessed. Non-parametrical tests (χ2-test, α = 0.05) were performed. The first null-hypothesis was that the adhesive interface micromorphology between enamel and dentin and self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) is similar with conventional resin cement used with a self-etch adhesive (CRC+SE). The second null-hypothesis was that the micromorphology is not influenced by curing modes. Interdiffusion zones and tag-like structures (dentin) were observed more frequently for CRC+SE compared to SARCs. For each luting agent, there was a non-significant (p > 0.05) tendency for interdiffusion zone and tag-like structures detectable in more specimens after self-curing compared to dual-curing. Marginal gaps (enamel) were found only for SARCs. The first null-hypothesis was not rejected fully: Tag-like structures and interdiffusion zones in dentin were found for CRC+SE and SARCs. The second null-hypothesis was not rejected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate dentin bonding durability of different etch-and-rinse (ER) adhesive systems under fatigue stress and to compare morphological features of resin/dentin interfaces using SEM. METHODS Two three-step ER adhesives, a two-step ER adhesive, and a universal adhesive in ER mode were evaluated. Before application of either primer or adhesive, phosphoric acid etching of human dentin was completed. Fifteen bonded specimens for each adhesive system were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 24 h, then subjected to a shear bond strength (SBS) test. Bonding durability was assessed from the perspective of biomechanical stress. 25 bonded specimens for each adhesive system were subjected to shear fatigue strength (SFS) testing with a repeated subcritical load at a frequency of 20 Hz for 50,000 cycles or until failure. RESULTS Mean SBS and SFS values ranged from 33.3 to 41.2 MPa, and from 18.3 to 20.3 MPa, respectively. Three-step adhesives showed higher SBS and SFS values than the other adhesive systems. Under SEM, resin tags in different adhesive systems showed similar features, but morphology below the hybrid layer was material dependent. The universal adhesive in ER mode showed an obvious thin, high-density reaction layer below the hybrid layer. SIGNIFICANCE Three-step adhesives showed higher dentin bond durability than the other ER adhesives; no significant differences in SFS were found between the universal adhesive in ER mode and the three-step ER adhesives. The results of this in vitro study indicate that some ER adhesives might establish chemical bonding with intact dentin below the hybrid layer in addition to micromechanical retention.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects in the dentin bond strength of dental adhesives (DAs) and biological effects using zinc (Zn)-doped mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBN-Zn). Synthesized MBN and MBN-Zn were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) inhibition effects of DA-MBN and DA-MBN-Zn were analyzed. The microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test was conducted before and after thermocycling to investigate the effects of MBN and MBN-Zn on the MTBS of DAs. The biological properties of DA-MBN and DA-MBN-Zn were analyzed with human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Compared with the DA, only the DA-1.0% MBN and DA-1.0% MBN-Zn exhibited a statistically significant decrease in MMP activity. The MTBS values after thermocycling were significantly increased in DA-1.0% MBN and DA-1.0% MBN-Zn compared with the DA (p < 0.05). It was confirmed via the MTT assay that there was no cytotoxicity for hDPSCs at 50% extract. In addition, significant increases in the alkaline phosphatase activity and Alizarin Red S staining were observed only in DA-1.0%MBN-Zn. These data suggest the 1.0% MBN and 1.0% MBN-Zn enhance the remineralization capability of DAs and stabilize the long-term MTBS of DAs by inhibiting MMPs.

Abstract
Purpose. Secondary caries originate from a leakage pathway where oral acids can penetrate faster and demineralize the tooth substrate deeper which can be visualized by dye penetration. The ability to prevent secondary caries by contemporary adhesive systems was evaluated in this study. Dye penetration distance through leakage and into the tooth substrate adjacent to Class V restorations after artificial caries exposure was compared. Materials and Methods. Previously frozen extracted human molars were used to prepare the Class V cavities at the CEJ on axial surfaces. All cavities were restored with either the resin-composite or amalgam with or without resin adhesives: dry bonding: Super-Bond D-Liner II Plus; moist bonding: All-Bond 2; and self-etch bonding: AQ Bond and Clearfil Protect Bond. Two subgroups of Super-Bond D-Liner II Plus were immersed for 14 days at 37°C either in artificial saliva (negative control) or the artificial caries solution. The other groups were soaked in the artificial caries solution. The distance of dye penetration into the adjacent enamel, cementum/dentin, and tooth-resin interfaces was measured after immersion in 0.5% basic fuchsin dye for 24 h. The tooth-resin interfacial layer was investigated using SEM. Results. No dye penetration into the tooth-resin interface was found in Super-Bond D-Liner II Plus and AQ Bond groups which demonstrated a constant hybrid layer after a chemical challenge. The leakage distance at the cementum/dentin-resin interface of All-Bond 2, Clearfil Protect Bond, and non-adhesive amalgam (positive control) groups was significantly higher than the distance of dye penetration into the adjacent demineralized root surface (p<0.05). Conclusion. Caries associated with either amalgam or resin-composite restorations can be prevented using resin adhesives which can penetrate into the intact tooth substrate to form a stable hybrid layer. With caries-free restorations, tooth vitality may be conserved lifelong.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic discs luted to differently etched enamel and dentin surfaces. Occlusal surfaces of 64 carious-free human molars and vestibule surfaces of 64 first maxillary incisors were ground to get flat superficial dentin and flattened enamel respectively. After generating 4 groups according to the surface etching method (37% orthophosphoric acid, Er:YAG laser-contact handpiece/scanning handpiece (1 or 2 times of scanning)), ceramic discs were luted to the surfaces with adhesive resin cement (Variolink N, Vivadent Ets., Schaan/Liechtenstein). After etching and cementation, thermocycling of 5000 cycles (Sd Mechatronık Gmbh, Feldkirchen-Westerham, Germany) and SBS test (Servopulser EHFFD1; Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) were performed respectively. The surface morphologies of 2 specimens, etched enamel and dentin, prepared for each group were examined with SEM analysis. Failure modes were determined under a USB digital microscope. Data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test (α = 0.05). SBS values in dentin surfaces showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) among tested groups. The highest SBS among dentin groups was determined in the group which had 2 times etching by Er:YAG laser (11.42 MPa) by a scanning handpiece. No statistical differences were observed in the other dentin or enamel groups. Laser etching seems to be a viable alternative to acid etching on both enamel and dentin surfaces while double etching of dentin with a scanning handpiece can improve the adhesion.

Abstract
Background Bonding composite to remineralized dentin is challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of composite to demineralized dentin, which had been remineralized with sodium fluoride (NaF), CPP-ACP and NovaMin containing dentifrices. Materials and methods 108 extracted human premolars or molars were sectioned longitudinally into buccal and lingual halves (n = 216). Dentin (3 × 3 mm) was exposed on the cervical aspect of teeth and the samples were allotted randomly to six groups (n = 36) according to the remineralizing agent used namely, group 1 (sound dentin), group 2 (demineralized dentin), group 3 (NaF), group 4 (CPP-ACP), group 5 (NovaMin) and group 6 (non-fluoridated). The type of bonding system (total-etch or self-etch) formed the subgroups. Samples in groups 2-6 were submitted to an acid challenge for 3 days followed by remineralization in groups 3-6 for 90 days. Etching pattern (n = 3) was observed under SEM. μSBS of the bonded samples (n = 15) were evaluated. The data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Dunn's Post Hoc tests (p < 0.05). Results SEM micrographs of remineralized samples showed varying degrees of partially occluded and exposed dentinal tubules. Under both the adhesives, the mean μSBS of composite in groups 2-6 was lesser than that of group 1. Among self-etch subgroups, μSBS of NaF group was not significantly different from that of normal dentin. Conclusion Composite forms a weaker bond to remineralized dentin. Self-etch bonding system is capable of achieving acceptable bond strength to dentin remineralized with NaF and NovaMin.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: To evaluate in vitro the fracture resistance and fracture type of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials. Materials and Methods: Discs were fabricated (10 × 1.5 mm) from four test groups (N = 80; N = 20 per group): lithium disilicate (LDS) group (control group): IPS e.max CAD®; zirconium-reinforced lithium silicate (ZRLS) group: VITA SUPRINITY®; polymer-infiltrated ceramic networks (PICN) group: VITA ENAMIC®; resin nanoceramics (RNC) group: LAVA™ ULTIMATE. Each disc was cemented (following the manufacturers’ instructions) onto previously prepared molar dentin. Samples underwent until fracture using a Shimadzu® test machine. The stress suffered by each material was calculated with the Hertzian model, and its behavior was analyzed using the Weibull modulus. Data were analyzed with ANOVA parametric statistical tests. Results: The LDS group obtained higher fracture resistance (4588.6 MPa), followed by the ZRLS group (4476.3 MPa) and PICN group (4014.2 MPa) without statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). Hybrid materials presented lower strength than ceramic materials, the RNC group obtaining the lowest values (3110 MPa) with significant difference (p < 0.001). Groups PICN and RNC showed greater occlusal wear on the restoration surface prior to star-shaped fracture on the surface, while other materials presented radial fracture patterns. Conclusion: The strength of CAD-CAM materials depended on their composition, lithium disilicate being stronger than hybrid materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to observe the resin/dentin interfaces of universal adhesives by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and to compare their morphologies with conventional etch & rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) adhesive systems. METHODS Two three-step and one two-step ER adhesives and two two-step and two single-step SE adhesives were used for comparison with seven universal adhesives in ER mode and SE mode, respectively. Bonded surfaces with bovine teeth were longitudinally sectioned and mirror-polished. Half of the samples were treated with HCl and NaOCl solutions. The interfaces were subjected to argon ion beam etching and then observed by scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The thickness of the adhesive layer (AL) of most of the seven universal adhesives and single-step SE adhesives was similar. Universal adhesives in SE mode formed a hybrid smear layer as a high-density zone between the AL and dentin. The thickness of the hybrid layer (HL) of the universal adhesives in ER mode was ∼1-2μm, with a high-density zone (reaction layer [RL]) below the HL. CONCLUSION The morphological features of most universal adhesives in SE mode and single-step SE adhesives are similar. Although resin-dentin interfaces of universal adhesives in ER mode resemble those of ER adhesives, universal adhesives have a distinctive feature, an RL. SIGNIFICANCE The RL might be a sign of chemical bonding even when using universal adhesives in ER mode.

Abstract
Evaluation of gap formation at the interfaces of a two-step self-etching adhesive with/without pre-etching was performed using sweptsource optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Round cavities were prepared in bovine incisors at the middle (MC) and cervical (CC) thirds of the crown and the cervical third of the root (CR). Clearfil SE bond was directly applied to one group (SE) and another (PA) was pretreated with K-etchant gel. Following restoration by flowable composite resin, the teeth were thermally challenged and stored for 2 months. Interfacial gaps observed in the cross-sectional OCT images were analyzed and the bottom cavities exhibited increased gaps compared to the margin and dentin-enamel junction (DEJ). The CR site had a larger gap than at MC and CC in the SE group. DEJ separation at the MC was significantly smaller than that at CC in both groups. Therefore, gap formation depends on the cavity region, location, and bonding protocol.

Abstract
The aim of this in-vitro study was to evaluate microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of two different self-adhesive composites (SACs) on the permanent dentin by applying five different universal adhesive systems. In this study, two different SACs [Vertise Flow (VF), Fusio Liquid Dentin (FLD)] and five different bonding systems [Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CUB), Single Bond Universal (SBU), All Bond Universal (ABU), Prime Bond Universal (PBU), Futurabond U (FBU)] were used. A total of 22 groups were created in which SACs were applied without adhesive and with five different universal bonding agents in total-etch (TE) and self-etch (SE) modes. Two hundred and forty test sticks were obtained using 48 healthy human molar teeth in total with groups having 10 samples each. The μTBS test was applied to each sample in the Universal test device and the data obtained were analyzed statistically by variance analysis and Tukey HSD test. In addition, the resin-dentin interface and fractures modes in the groups were examined by SEM. Upon examining the μTBS results, the highest values were seen in the use of SBU adhesive in TE mode in VF group, while the lowest values were seen in the FLD control group. The difference between the control and experimental groups was found statistically significant (p < .05). Upon comparing the control groups with each other, it was seen that VF group had higher μTBS values than FLD group and the difference between the groups was found statistically significant (p < .05). The μTBS results and SEM images of the study showed that the use of SACs with universal adhesive systems provides a more effective bond strength.

Abstract
The proanthocyanidin (PA)-rich grape seed extract (GSE) is a collagen cross-linking agent that can perform a chemical bond with the dentin's collagen. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence on shear bond strength (SBS) of the pre-conditioning of GSE, on human dentin surfaces conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser. The sample consisted of 64 non-carious human teeth, divided into eight groups, four groups conditioned with Er,Cr:YSGG laser (4.5 W, 50 Hz, 50 μs, 70% air, 90% water) and four prepared with conventional methods (control). In both groups, a GSE solution was applied before using the two adhesives tested: Clearfil™ SE Bond (CSE) and Scotchbond™ Universal (SU). Subsequently, a SBS test, a scanning electron microscopy, and a statistical analysis were performed. In the laser groups, the best SBS mean (20.08 ± 4.01 MPa) was achieved in the group treated with GSE and CSE. The control group with the application of CSE showed the highest SBS mean (24.27 ± 10.28 MPa), and the group treated with laser and SU showed the lowest SBS mean (12.94 ± 6.51 MPa). Between these two groups there was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.05). However, this was not observed among the laser or control groups. The type of dentin surface preparation can influence the SBS. The CSE showed better SBS in laser and control groups. The presence of GSE did not improve the adhesion on surfaces conditioned with laser, but more studies should be carried out in the future to confirm this conclusion.

Abstract
The field of dental materials has undergone more of a revolution than an evolution over the past 100 y. The development of new products, especially in the past half century, has occurred at a staggering pace, and their introduction to the market has been equally impressive. The movement has mostly come in the area of improved esthetics, marked by the gradual replacement of dental amalgam with dental composite and all-metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal indirect restorations with reinforced dental ceramics, all made possible by the rapid improvements in dental adhesive materials. This article covers the time course of dental materials development over the past century in which the Journal of Dental Research has been published. While there have been advances in nearly all materials used in the field, this article focuses on several areas, including dental amalgam, dental composites and light curing, dental adhesives and dental cements, ceramics, and new functional repair materials. A few short statements on future advances will be included at the end.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study was to make a comparison between microleakage of conventionally restored class V cavities using acid etchant and the ones conditioned by erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser, and also to assess and compare the effectiveness of enamel surface treatments of occlusal pits and fissures by acid etching and conditioned by Er:YAG laser-etch. Materials and methods Seventy-two extracted third molars were used in this study. The samples were divided into two major groups: class V cavities and pit and fissure sealants. Each subgroup was divided into conventional acid etching, Er:YAG laser conditioning and conventional acid etching, and combination with Er:YAG laser conditioning (n=12). The teeth were placed in 2% methylene blue dye solution, were sectioned, and were evaluated according to the dye penetration criteria. Two samples per subgroup were chosen for scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Results There was a significant difference between occlusal and cervical margin groups. Laser conventional composite cementum group showed more microleakage values compared to other groups. There was no significant difference between occlusal margin groups. However, there was a significant difference between cervical margin groups in terms of microleakage. In sealant groups, there was a significant difference between laser and conventional with/without laser treatment groups in terms of microleakage. Conclusion Based on the results reported in this study, it can be concluded that the application of the Er:YAG laser beneath the resin composite, the resin-modified glass ionomers (GIs), and the fissure sealant placement may be an alternative enamel and dentin etching method to acid etching.

Abstract
Background. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a material that has recently gained popularity in the application of the vital pulp therapy. Along with the increasing use of MTA to this end, the permanent restoration material to be placed on MTA has become a significant issue. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the bond strength of the novel low-shrinkage silorane-based composite resin (SBC) to MTA.
Methods. Twenty acrylic blocks filled with MTA were prepared for this study. SBC was the test group and methacrylate-based composite resin (MBC) was used as the control group. Shear bond strength test was performed to determine the bond strength. The surfaces of broken samples were evaluated under a stereomicroscope and grouped as adhesive, cohesive and mixed. Data were examined by statistical analysis.
Results. Statistical analysis revealed that SBC exhibited higher shear bond strength than the control group. It was observed that most of the failures in the test group were of cohesive type within MTA.
Conclusion. Based on the results, SBC showed higher shear bond strength than the control group; however, clinical follow-up is needed to evaluate the clinical success.

Abstract
Aim This study aimed to evaluate the cleaning protocol of dentin impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) and the effects on the adhesive interface using 95% ethanol (E) or formamide solution (F) associated with microabrasion with glass microparticles (M). Methodology Forty dentin specimens were impregnated with sealer (AH Plus). Specimens were cleansed according to the following protocols (n = 10): G1 (E); G2 (F); G3 (E = M); and G4 (F = M). No treatment was performed in G5 (control). Specimens were subjected to standard error of the mean to evaluate the residues persistence (×500) and open dentinal tubules counting (×2000). Another fifty specimens were subjected to similar procedures and cleaning protocols. Seven days later, composite-resin-made specimens were performed on dentin using etch-and-rinse adhesive system, then submitted to microshear test. Results G2 and G4 showed higher residues' persistence and lower incidence of open dentinal tubules than G1 and G3 (P < 0.05). No difference was found between G1 and G3 or G2 and G4 (P > 0.05). Adhesive system bond strength was similar in all groups (P > 0.05). Conclusions Microabrasion negatively affected the epoxy resin-based sealer residues' removal protocols' action; all groups presented residues on the dentin surface. However, 7 days later, the protocols did not affect the bond strength of adhesive system to sealer-impregnated dentin.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The present study determined the mechanical properties and volumetric polymerization shrinkage of different categories of resin composite. Three high viscosity bulk fill resin composites were tested: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (TB, Ivoclar Vivadent), Filtek Bulk Fill posterior restorative (FB, 3M ESPE), and Sonic Fill (SF, Kerr Corp). Two low-shrinkage resin composites, Kalore (KL, GC Corp) and Filtek LS Posterior (LS, 3M ESPE), were used. Three conventional resin composites, Herculite Ultra (HU, Kerr Corp), Estelite ∑ Quick (EQ, Tokuyama Dental), and Filtek Supreme Ultra (SU, 3M ESPE), were used as comparison materials. Following ISO Specification 4049, six specimens for each resin composite were used to determine flexural strength, elastic modulus, and resilience. Volumetric polymerization shrinkage was determined using a water-filled dilatometer. Data were evaluated using analysis of variance followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference test (α=0.05). The flexural strength of the resin composites ranged from 115.4 to 148.1 MPa, the elastic modulus ranged from 5.6 to 13.4 GPa, and the resilience ranged from 0.70 to 1.0 MJ/m3. There were significant differences in flexural properties between the materials but no clear outliers. Volumetric changes as a function of time over a duration of 180 seconds depended on the type of resin composite. However, for all the resin composites, apart from LS, volumetric shrinkage began soon after the start of light irradiation, and a rapid decrease in volume during light irradiation followed by a slower decrease was observed. The low shrinkage resin composites KL and LS showed significantly lower volumetric shrinkage than the other tested materials at the measuring point of 180 seconds. In contrast, the three bulk fill resin composites showed higher volumetric change than the other resin composites. The findings from this study provide clinicians with valuable information regarding the mechanical properties and polymerization kinetics of these categories of current resin composite.

Abstract
This study evaluated the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of resin composite to primary dentin using a universal adhesive in etchand-rinse mode or self-etch mode. Flat ground dentin surfaces were created on forty extracted human primary incisors and randomly assigned into four groups (n=10): Adper Single Bond II (ASB), Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), Single Bond Universal etch-and-rinse (SBUER) and Single Bond Universal self-etch (SBU-SE). Adhesive was applied on the dentin surface, which was subsequently bonded with a resin composite. The µSBS test was performed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The ASB group generated a lower mean µSBS (19.1±3.4 MPa) than those of the other groups [SBU-ER (24.3±2.7 MPa), SBU-SE (25.1±2.4 MPa), and CSE (25.3±2.7 MPa)]. Adhesive failure was the most common failure mode in each group. In conclusion, SBU used in etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode resulted in similar bond strength to primary dentin.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of different adhesive application methods and etching modes on enamel bond effectiveness of universal adhesives using shear bond strength (SBS) testing and surface free-energy (SFE) measurements. The adhesives Scotchbond Universal, All-Bond Universal, Adhese Universal, and G-Premio Bond were used. Prepared bovine enamel specimens were divided into four groups, based on type of adhesive, and subjected to the following surface treatments: (i) total-etch mode with active application; (ii) total-etch mode with inactive application; (iii) self-etch mode with active application; and (iv) self-etch mode with inactive application. Bonded specimens were subjected to SBS testing. The SFE of the enamel surfaces with adhesive was measured after rinsing with acetone and water. The SBS values in total-etch mode were significantly higher than those in self-etch mode. In total-etch mode, significantly lower SBS values were observed with active application compared with inactive application; in contrast, in self-etch mode there were no significant differences in SBS between active and inactive applications. A reduction in total SFE was observed for active application compared with inactive application. The interaction between etching mode and application method was statistically significant, and the application method significantly affected enamel bond strength in total-etch mode.

Abstract
Er-YAG laser irradiation has been claimed to improve the adhesive properties of dentin. We tested the hypothesis that dentin adhesion is affected by Er-YAG laser conditioning. Superficial or deep dentin from human molars was: (a) acid-etched with 35% H3PO4; (b) irradiated with an Er-YAG laser (KaVo) at 2 Hz and 180 mJ, with water-cooling; and (c) laser- and acid-etched. Single Bond (3M ESPE) and Z100 composite (3M ESPE) were bonded to the prepared surfaces. After storage, specimens were tested in shear to failure. Bonded interfaces were demineralized in EDTA and processed for transmission electron microscopy. Two-way ANOVA revealed that conditioning treatment and interaction between treatment and dentin depth significantly influenced shear bond strength results. Acid-etching alone yielded shear bond strength values that were significantly higher than those achieved with laser ablation alone, or in combination with acid-etching. The Er-YAG laser created a laser-modified layer that adversely affects adhesion to dentin, so it does not constitute an alternative bonding strategy to conventional acid etching.

Abstract
Many aspects of dentin pulp tissue regeneration have been investigated, and it has been shown that dentin pulp has a high regeneration capacity. This seems to be because of the presence of progenitor cells and inductive regeneration signals from different origins. These signals can be liberated after the acidic dissolution of carious dentin as well as from pulp fibroblasts and endothelial cells in cases of traumatic injury. Thus, both carious lesions and pulp cells provide the required mediators for complete dentin-pulp regeneration including reparative dentin secretion, angiogenesis, and innervation. Additionally, all dentin pulp insults including carious "infection," traumatic injuries, application of restorative materials on the injured dentin pulp, and subsequent apoptosis are known activators of the complement system. This activation leads to the production of several biologically active fragments responsible for the vascular modifications and the attraction of immune cells to the inflammatory/injury site. Among these, C5a is involved in the recruitment of pulp progenitor cells, which express the C5a receptor. Thus, in addition to dentin and pulp cells, plasma should be considered as an additional source of regeneration signals.

Abstract
Improvements in dentin bonding systems have influenced modern restorative dentistry. The desire for minimal invasiveness has resulted in more-conservative cavity design, which basically relies on the effectiveness of current dentin bonding systems. Interaction of adhesives with enamel and dentin is based on two systems, commonly described as etch-and-rinse and self-etch. Priming and bonding agents can be separate or combined, resulting in two- or three-step systems for etch-and-rinse adhesives and one- or two-step systems for self-etch adhesives. Self-etch systems use acidic functional monomers that simultaneously demineralize and impregnate tooth structures. Etch-and-rinse and self-etch systems have advantages and disadvantages, which are primarily related to the simplified bonding procedures required under clinical conditions. Knowledge of the composition, characteristics, and mechanisms of adhesion for each adhesive system is critical in selecting the ideal adhesive materials for clinical use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different energy settings of Er:YAG laser irradiation on dentin surface morphology with respect to the number of opened dentinal tubules. BACKGROUND DATA An ideally prepared dentin surface with opened dentinal tubules is a prerequisite for adhesive fixation. No study, however, has yet compared the numbers of opened dentinal tubules with regard to statistical differences. METHODS Conventional preparations using a bur with or without additional acid etching acted as control groups. Dentin specimens were prepared from human third molars and randomly divided into eight groups according to the energy settings of the laser (1, 1.5, 4, 6, 7.5, and 8 W) and two controls (bur and bur plus acid etching). After surface preparation, dentin surfaces were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope, and the number of opened dentinal tubules in a defined area was counted. RESULTS The control groups showed smooth surfaces with (bur plus acid etching) and without opened dentinal tubules (bur), whereas all laser-irradiated surfaces showed rough surfaces. Using the energy setting of 4 W resulted in significantly more opened dentinal tubules than the conventional preparation technique using the bur with additional acid etching. In contrast, the energy setting of 8 W showed significantly fewer opened dentinal tubules, and also exhibited signs of thermal damage. CONCLUSIONS The Er:YAG laser with an energy setting of 4 W generates a dentin surface with opened dentinal tubules, a prerequisite for adhesive fixation.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate in vitro the effect of different concentrations of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in experimental silane-based primers on shear bond strength of orthodontic adhesives. METHODS Different volume percentages of HEMA were tested in four experimental silane-based primer solutions (additions of HEMA: 0, 5.0 vol%, 25.0 vol% and 50.0 vol%). An experimental silane blend (primer) of 1.0 vol% 3-isocyanatopropyltrimethoxysilane (ICMS) + 0.5% bis-1,2-(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTSE) was prepared and used. The experimental primers together with the control group were applied onto acid-etched premolars for attachment of orthodontic brackets. After artificial aging by thermocycling the shear-bond strength was measured. The fractured surfaces of all specimens were examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to evaluate the failure mode on the enamel surface. RESULTS The experimental primers showed the highest shear-bond strength of 21.15 MPa (SD ± 2.70 MPa) and with 25 vol% showed a highly significant increase (P < 0.05) in bond strength. The SEM images showed full penetration of adhesive agents when using silane-based primers. In addition, the SEM images suggested that the predominant failure type was not necessarily the same as for the failure propagation. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary study suggested that nonacidic silane-based primers with HEMA addition might be an alternative to for use as adhesion promoting primers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the influence of a hydrophobic resin coating (HC) on the immediate (24h) and 6-month (6m) microtensile dentin bond strengths (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) of three universal adhesives applied in self-etch (SE) or in etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. METHODS Sixty caries-free extracted third molars were assigned to 12 experimental groups resulting from the combination of the factors "adhesive system" (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive [SBU], 3M ESPE; All-Bond Universal [ABU], Bisco Inc.; and G-Bond Plus [GBP], GC Corporation); "adhesive strategy" (SE or ER); "hydrophobic resin coating" [HC] (with or without Heliobond, Ivoclar Vivadent); and "storage time" (24h or 6m). Specimens were prepared for μTBS testing - (24h) half of the beams were immediately tested under tension; and (6m) the other half was stored in distilled water (37°C) for 6m prior to testing. For each tooth, two beams were randomly selected for NL evaluation for both evaluation times. Data were analyzed for each adhesive system using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (α=0.05). RESULTS μTBS: (24h): In SE mode, HC resulted in statistically greater mean μTBS for all adhesives. (6m): When HC was not used the mean μTBS for SBU/ER, ABU/ER, GBP/ER and SBU/SE decreased significantly. NL: (24h): SBU/ER, ABU/ER and GBP/SE resulted in a significant reduction in NL when HC was applied. (6m): No significant reduction was observed for SBU/ER or for SBU/SE regardless of the use of HC. SIGNIFICANCE The application of a hydrophobic resin coating improved the 24h and the 6m performances of all three adhesives systems in SE mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the effects of the combined use of chlorhexidine and ethanol on the durability of resin-dentin bonds. METHODS Forty-eight flat dentin surfaces were etched (32% phosphoric acid), rinsed (15 s) and kept wet until bonding procedures. Dentin surfaces were blot-dried with absorbent paper and re-wetted with water (water, control), 1% chlorhexidine diacetate in water (CHD/water), 100% ethanol (ethanol), or 1% chlorhexidine diacetate in ethanol (CHD/ethanol) solutions for 30 s. They were then bonded with All Bond 3 (AB3, Bisco) or Excite (EX, Ivoclar-Vivadent) using a smooth, continuous rubbing application (10 s), followed by 15 s gentle air stream to evaporate solvents. The adhesives were light-cured (20 s) and resin composite build-ups constructed for the microtensile method. Bonded beams were obtained and tested after 24-h, 6-months and 15-months of water storage at 37°C. Storage water was changed every month. Effects of treatment and testing periods were analyzed (ANOVA, Holm-Sidak, p<0.05) for each adhesive. RESULTS There were no interactions between factors for both etch-and-rinse adhesives. AB3 was significantly affected only by storage (p=0.003). Excite was significantly affected only by treatments (p=0.048). AB3 treated either with ethanol or CHD/ethanol resulted in reduced bond strengths after 15 months. The use of CHD/ethanol resulted in higher bond strengths values for Excite. CONCLUSIONS Combined use of ethanol/1% chlorhexidine diacetate did not stabilize bond strengths after 15 months.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of Erbium, Chromium: Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser in different output powers for removing permanent resin cement residues and therefore its influence on microshear bond strength compared to other cleaning methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS 90 extracted human molars were sectioned in 1 mm thickness. Resin cement was applied to surface of sliced teeth. After the removal of initial cement, 6 test groups were prepared by various dentin surface treatment methods as follows: no treatment (Group 1), ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid application (Group 2), Endosolv R application (Group 3), 1.25 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 4), 2 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 5) and 3.5 W Erbium, Chromium:Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser irradiation (Group 6). The topography and morphology of the treated dentin surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (n=2 for each group). Following the repetitive cementation, microshear bond strength between dentin and cement (n=26 in per group) were measured with universal testing machine and the data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis H Test with Bonferroni correction (P<.05). Fracture patterns were investigated by light microscope. RESULTS Mean microshear bond strength ± SD (MPa) for each group was 34.9 ± 17.7, 32.1 ± 15.8, 37.8 ± 19.3, 31.3 ± 12.7, 44.4 ± 13.6, 40.2 ± 13.2 respectively. Group 5 showed significantly difference from Group 1, Group 2 and Group 4. Also, Group 6 was found statistically different from Group 4. CONCLUSION 2 W and 3.5 W Erbium, Chromium: Yttrium-Scandium-Gallium-Garnet laser application were found efficient in removing resin residues.

Abstract
Sample preparation and imaging techniques for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of dehydrated dental samples can hinder the structural analyses. This study qualitatively evaluated images obtained with two different protocols of SEM preparation and analysis to assess the dentine adhesive interface. The crown and root dentine of 12 bovine incisors were subjected to cementation with the resin cement RelyX U100 or RelyX ARC/SBMP (n = 6). After storage for 7 days in a moist environment at 37 ± 1°C, the dentine samples were dehydrated in an ascending alcohol series, and three specimens from each group were coated with gold or carbon and examined in a high-vacuum (JEOL JSM-6360LV, 10 kV) or low-vacuum (FEI Quanta 200F, 15-30 kV) microscope. Images were obtained at magnifications between 50 and 2,000×, but with different working distances. The use of high vacuum for carbon and gold coating and SEM visualization led to cracks in the samples. A small number of cracks can be described in the specimens subjected to the low-vacuum technique. The protocol for SEM imaging in low vacuum was considered more appropriate for preservation of the integrity of the evaluated structures.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this work was to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) between a composite resin and dentin, promoted by two dental adhesive systems (one-step self-etching adhesive Easy Bond [3M ESPE], and two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive Scotchbond 1XT [3M ESPE]) with different application protocols (per manufacturer's instruction (control group); with one to four additional adhesive layers; or with an extra hydrophobic adhesive layer). METHODS Proximal enamel was removed from ninety caries-free human molars to obtain two dentin discs per tooth, which were randomly assigned to twelve experimental groups (n=15). After adhesion protocol, the composite resin (Filtek Z250 [3M ESPE]) was applied. Specimens were mounted in the Watanabe test device and shear bond test was performed in a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min. Data were analyzed with ANOVA followed by Student-Newman-Keuls tests (P<0.05). RESULTS The highest SBS mean value was attained with the Easy Bond three layers group (41.23±2.71 MPa) and the lowest with Scotchbond 1XT per manufacturer's instructions (27.15±2.99 MPa). Easy Bond yielded higher SBS values than Scotchbond 1XT. There were no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) between the application protocols tested, except for the three and four layers groups, that presented higher SBS results compared to manufacturer's instruction groups (P<0.05). No statistically significant differences were detected between the three and four layers groups (P≥0.05). CONCLUSION It is recommendable to apply three adhesive layers when using Easy Bond and Scotchbond 1XT adhesives, since it improves SBS values without consuming much time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the dentine microtensile bond strength (μTBS), nanoleakage (NL), degree of conversion (DC) within the hybrid layer for etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies of universal simplified adhesive systems. METHODS forty caries free extracted third molars were divided into 8 groups for μTBS (n=5), according to the adhesive and etching strategy: Clearfil SE Bond [CSE] and Adper Single Bond 2 [SB], as controls; Peak Universal Adhesive System, self-etch [PkSe] and etch-and-rinse [PkEr]; Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, self-etch [ScSe] and etch-and-rinse [ScEr]; All Bond Universal, self-etch [AlSe] and etch-and-rinse [AlEr]. After restorations were constructed, specimens were stored in water (37°C/24h) and then resin-dentine sticks were prepared (0.8mm(2)). The sticks were tested under tension at 0.5mm/min. Some sticks from each tooth group were used for DC determination by micro-Raman spectroscopy or nanoleakage evaluation (NL). The pH for each solution was evaluated using a pH metre. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS For μTBS, only PkSe and PkEr were similar to the respective control groups (p>0.05). AlSe showed the lowest μTBS mean (p<0.05). For NL, ScEr, ScSe, AlSe, and AlEr showed the lowest NL similar to control groups (p<0.05). For DC, only ScSe showed lower DC than the other materials (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Performance of universal adhesives was shown to be material-dependent. The results indicate that this new category of universal adhesives used on dentine as either etch-and-rinse or self-etch strategies were inferior as regards at least one of the properties evaluated (μTBS, NL and DC) in comparison with the control adhesives (CSE for self-etch and SB for etch-and-rinse).

Abstract
This review examines the fundamental processes responsible for the aging mechanisms involved in the degradation of resin-bonded interfaces, as well as some potential approaches to prevent and counteract this degradation. Current research in several research centers aims at increasing the resin-dentin bond durability. The hydrophilic and acidic characteristics of current dentin adhesives have made hybrid layers highly prone to water sorption. This, in turn, causes polymer degradation and results in decreased resin-dentin bond strength over time. These unstable polymers inside the hybrid layer may result in denuded collagen fibers, which become vulnerable to mechanical and hydrolytical fatigue, as well as degradation by host-derived proteases with collagenolytic activity. These enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinases and cysteine cathepsins, have a crucial role in the degradation of type I collagen, the organic component of the hybrid layer. This review will also describe several methods that have been recently advocated to silent the activity of these endogenous proteases.
