The Effect of Religious Attitude on Death Anxiety among Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis Treatment: A Sample from Turkey

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of religious attitude on death anxiety among patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment. This cross-sectional study included 77 patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment. The religious attitude scale (RAS) and the death anxiety scale (DAS) were used to collect data. The results revealed a moderately strong negative relationship between the mean RAS total score and the mean DAS total score (r = - 0.350, p < 0.05). Additionally, religious attitude accounted for 12% of the variance in death anxiety (R2 = 0.12). Accordingly, the levels of religious attitude exhibited by patients may negatively affect their death anxiety.

The Situation and Influencing Factors of Depression and Anxiety in Patients of Hemodialysis during the COVID-19 Pandemic in China

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the incidence of depression and anxiety among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients during the regular prevention and control stage of COVID-19 in China as well as the influencing factors.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study including 180 patients under the treatment of hemodialysis was conducted in the hemodialysis center of the 8th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University. The questionnaire regarding the subject's general information, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) was completed by the patients, and the laboratory test results were recorded.

RESULTS

The incidences of anxiety and depression were 35.6% and 38.9%, respectively, and the average scores of SAS and SDS were (48.03 ± 5.02) and (48.12 ± 5.42), respectively, in the subjects. The results showed that age, monthly income, vascular access of dialysis, feeling of pain and itching (within a week), worried about being infected by COVID-19, whether having health insurance and the levels of hemoglobin, parathyroid hormone, and phosphorus were the impact factors of both anxiety and depression in the MHD patients (p < 0.05 for all).

CONCLUSION

The proportion of depression and anxiety is relatively high in the MHD patients during the regular prevention and control stage of COVID-19.

Association between negative psychology and sleep quality in dialysis patients during the COVID-19 pandemic

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to assess the sleep quality in dialysis patients during the COVID-19 epidemic and explore the association between negative psychology (including depression, anxiety, and stress) and sleep quality in this population.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study including three centres.

METHODS (PATIENTS OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION)

This cross-sectional study included 378 dialysis patients from April to May 2022 in three dialysis centres in Shanghai.

METHODS

Depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep quality were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Perceived Stress Scale-14 (PSS-14), and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), respectively. With a threshold of 5 to classify participants into good and poor sleep quality, with HADS/PSS-14 scores as independent variables (per standard deviation (SD) increment), respectively and binary Logistic regression model was constructed to explore the association between the three negative psychological aspects of depression, anxiety, and stress and sleep quality.

RESULTS

The median PSQI score was 11.0 (mean ± SD: 11.8 ± 4.8). Among them, poor sleep quality (i.e., PSQI >5) was reported by 90.2% of participants. After adjusting for sociodemographic and disease-related information, HADS-depression was associated with a significant 49% (odds ratio (OR): 1.49; 95% CI 1.02-2.18) increase in the risk of poor sleep quality for each additional SD (2.4). Correspondingly, for each SD (7.1) increase in PSS-14, the risk of poor sleep quality was significantly increased by 95% (OR: 1.95; 95% CI 1.35-2.82).

CONCLUSION

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant negative association between negative psychology, such as depression and stress, and sleep quality in dialysis patients, and this relationship was independent of the dialysis modality.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

In the context of the rampant COVID-19, the vast majority of dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease presents with severe sleep quality problems, and negative psychology is a potential influencing factor.

Cancer-Related Stigmatization, Quality of Life, and Fear of Death Among Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients

The purpose of the study is to investigate the gender differences among newly diagnosed cancer patients from the cultural perspective of Pakistan. The data comprised two equal groups: men (50%) and women (50%). Most participants were 31-45 years old, and the duration of the cancer diagnosis was less than 6 months (74.6%). The data was collected on the following scales: the discrimination and stigma scale, the internalized stigma scale, the WHO-quality of life scale, and the fear of death scale. Data was analyzed using SPSS v.25; descriptive statistics, an independent sample t-test, and simple linear regression were applied to the data. The results revealed that men and women are both experiencing cancer-related stigmatization in Pakistan. However, women face a higher level of stigmatization, lower quality of life, and higher fear of death than men. Furthermore, the regression analysis result confirms that the cancer-related stigma faced by the diagnosed patients decreases the patient's quality of life and induces the fear of death.

Conspiracy Illusion, Superstitions, and Death Anxiety of Older Adults Who Refused Covid-19 Vaccination in Iran: A Cross-Sectional Study on Their Beliefs

The study was aimed to assess mental health of the older adults who did not participate in the three stages of national vaccination program. As a descriptive-analytical study, about 285 Iranian older people were interviewed in 2022. Data collection tools included demographic characteristics, conspiracy scale, superstitious beliefs instrument, and Templer death anxiety. The convenience sampling method was used and data were analyzed using BIM-SPSS version 28. Death anxiety statistically effect on conspiratory and superstitions with scores 0.190 and 0.320 using adjusted Eta squared, respectively and superstitious beliefs effected 81% of conspiracy as well (p = 0.001). Using ROC analysis, the cutoff points for conspiracy of men and women and final SEM model were extracted too. Interaction of conspiracy illusion, superstitions with death anxiety during the pandemic time among vulnerable groups i.e ageing community can shape a decision line in health policy making.

Associations between new health conditions and healthcare service utilizations among older adults in the United Kingdom: effects of COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income

Background

Health services are critically important for older adults, particularly during the Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income may seriously impact health services by feasibility and accessibility. Therefore, the aim of the present study was empirically to explore how health-seeking behaviors are influenced by new health conditions through COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income.

Methods

Data were from ELSA COVID-19 waves 1 and 2 which included a sample of 6952 and 6710 older adults in the United Kingdom, respectively. The frequency distribution analyses were conducted by Chi-square analysis by gender groups. Zero-inflated Poisson regressions were used to examine how worse financial situation and lowered income were associated with COVID-19 risks and new health conditions. Logistic regressions were employed to examine the associations of COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income with treatment cancellation and accessible care. Cross-sectional mediation models, cross-sectional moderation models, longitudinal mediation models, and longitudinal moderation models were conducted based on Hayes model 6, Hayes model 29, Montoya model 1, and Montoya model 2, respectively.

Results

Most of the sample was >65 years old, females, located in urban place, and involved in long-standing condition. Regression analysis showed that COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income were associated with treatment cancellation and accessible care. In the longitudinal mediations, effect coefficients of ‘X’ → (treatment cancellation in wave 1 (Tcn1)- treatment cancellation in wave 2 (Tcn2))(β = −.0451, p < .0001, low limit confidence interval (LLCI) = −.0618, upper limit confidence interval (ULCI) = −.0284), ‘X’ → (COVID-19 risks in wave 1 (Csk1)- COVID-19 risks in wave 2 (Csk2)) (β = .0592, p < .0001, LLCI = .0361, ULCI = .0824), and ‘X’ → (lowered income in wave 1 (CIn1)- lowered income in wave 2 (CIn2)) (β = −.0351, p = .0001, LLCI = -.0523, ULCI = -.0179) were significant. Additionally, effect coefficients of ‘X’ → (accessible care in wave 1 (Acr1)- accessible care in wave 2 (Acr2)) (β = .3687, p < .0001, LLCI = .3350, ULCI = .4025),'X’ → (Csk1- Csk2) (β = .0676, p = .0005, LLCI = .0294, ULCI = .1058), and ‘X’ → (worse financial situation in wave 1- worse financial situation in wave 2) (β = −.0369, p = .0102, LLCI = -.0650, ULCI = -.0087) were significant.

Conclusions

There were longitudinal mediating effects of COVID-19 risks, worse financial situation, and lowered income on the relationship between new health conditions and treatment cancellation and relationship between new health conditions and accessible care. These findings suggest that worse financial situation, lowered income, and COVID-19 risks exerted an influence on the relationship between new health conditions and treatment cancellation and relationship between new health conditions and accessible care among older adults. Findings suggest that longitudinal mediations may be important components of interventions aiming to meet service needs. Long-term health policy implications indicate the need for reducing COVID-19 risks, improving financial situation, and increasing income among the targeted population.
