Abstract
IMPORTANCE The scope of early intervention (EI) programs, which mostly focus on motor skills, needs to be expanded. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of an EI on developmental domains and parent-child interactions. DESIGN Randomized controlled study. PARTICIPANTS Children ages 24-36 mo with developmental delay (DD; intervention group, n = 30; control group, n = 40). SETTING Pediatric occupational therapy unit of Hacettepe University. INTERVENTION The intervention group received an intervention that used the Goal Activity and Motor Enrichment (GAME) approach and a home program, whereas the control group received a home program only. Both groups received the same intervention dosage. OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Developmental domains were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Third Edition (Bayley III) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). Sensory processing was assessed with the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile 2 (ITSP-2), social-emotional development with the ASQ:Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE), and parent-child interaction with the Parenting Interactions with Children: Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO™). A compliance checklist was used to determine compliance with the home program. RESULTS A significant between-groups difference was found on all Bayley III and PICCOLO subscales and on the Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem-Solving, and Social-Emotional domains of the ASQ and ASQ:SE in favor of the intervention group (p < .05). The intervention group showed more typification (normal sensory processing) in sensory quadrants and general processing. Both groups were 100% compliant with the home program. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The GAME-based intervention for children with DD, including sensory and cognitive activities, is effective in improving developmental domains and parent-child interactions. Plain-Language Summary: The scope of early intervention programs mostly focuses on motor skills and needs to be expanded to include the essential roles of children's sensory and cognitive abilities. This study provides important insights into early interventions by occupational therapists and the impact on children with developmental delay and parent-child interactions. We found that the Goal Activity and Motor Enrichment (GAME) intervention for children with developmental delay, which includes sensory and cognitive activities, is effective in improving developmental domains and parent-child interactions.

Abstract
The availability of stimulating materials in the home environment is of great importance to optimizing an infant's development. This study, which has a cross-sectional study design, was conducted to examine the relationship between home environment conditions and equipment support and the motor development and sensory processing skills of premature infants. Children born premature, aged 10-16 months, were included in the study. Motor development was evaluated with the Peabody Motor Development Scale-2, and sensory processing skills were evaluated with the Test of Sensory Function in Infants. The Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale was used to evaluate the home environment. A total of 51 premature infants were included in the study. It was determined that there was a significant relationship between physical space, stimulus variety and fine motor toys in the home environment and Peabody Motor Development Scale-2 gross motor and fine motor development scores. It was also shown that there was a relationship between the tactile and total scores of the Test of Sensory Function in Infants Scale and the variety of stimuli in the home environment and gross motor toy scores. These findings show that the opportunities provided in the home environment of premature infants may be related to their motor development and sensory processing skills. Consequently, the home environment may be associated with experiencing movements and sensory experiences.

Abstract
Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a critical condition affecting neonates due to oxygen deprivation and insufficient flow of blood to the brain. It is associated with high neonatal mortality and the risk of developmental psychomotor disorders, including cerebral palsy. The global epidemiology of HIE reveals significant disparities, with more advanced healthcare systems reporting lower incidence rates. The aim of the study is to contribute to the understanding of effective rehabilitation strategies for children with HIE and global developmental delay (GDD), with the goal of improving outcomes and quality of life for these individuals. This case report focuses on an 11-month-old male child with a history of perinatal HIE, highlighting the developmental challenges and interventions undertaken. The child showed delayed gross and fine motor development, sensory awareness deficits, and postural coordination issues. A comprehensive physiotherapy intervention plan was implemented, resulting in significant improvements in post-treatment outcome measures. This case highlights the importance of early and holistic physiotherapy interventions in addressing HIE patients' developmental delays and improving their quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent literature suggests that goal-oriented and family-based interventions in enriched environment have a beneficial effect on neuromotor and cognitive development. We aimed to examine the short-term effects of SAFE (Sensory strategies, Activity-based motor training, Family collaboration, and Environmental Enrichment) early intervention approach on motor, cognitive, speech and language, and sensory development in preterm infants. METHODS The study's sample population consisted of 24 preterm infants with corrected ages between 9 and 10 months. Infants in the control group participated in the family training program in accordance with the neurodevelopmental therapy principles (NDT). Infants in the treatment group were included in the family training program according to the principles of the SAFE Early Intervention Approach. Affordances in the Home Environment for Motor Development-Infant Scale (AHEMD-IS), Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI), Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), and Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III (Bayley III) were used to evaluate infants in both groups before and after 10 weeks of treatment (AHEMD-IS). The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale Short Form was used to assess the parents' mental health (DASS-SF). RESULTS The interaction effects (time × group) revealed significant differences for Bayley-III cognitive and language scores, TSFI total score, and AHEMD-IS total score in favor of the SAFE group (p < .05). However, there were no differences in Bayley-III motor composite score, COPM Performance score, and COPM Satisfaction score between the interaction effects (time × group) of the groups (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS SAFE early intervention approach improved cognitive, speech and language, sensory outcomes and provide enriched home environment in all domains when compared to NDT-based home program. SAFE is a promising novel early intervention approach for preterm infants.

Abstract
The Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RSTS) literature is limited about sensory integration, which is a foundational neurological function of the central nervous system that may affect the development of cognitive, social, and motor skills. The aim of this case report was to investigate the effects of Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) intervention on processing and integrating sensations, motor functions and parental goals of 3-year-old child with RSTS. Analysis of assessment data reviewed before and after treatment. Assessment collected by interview, Sensory Profile (SP), Sensory Processing Measure-Preschool (SPM-P) Home, Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2), Gross Motor Function Measurement-88 (GMFM-88), and Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Progress toward goals and objectives was measured with Goal Attainment Scale (GAS). ASI intervention was implemented 3 times per week for 8 weeks. At pre-intervention, SP and SPM-P Home revealed prominent sensory processing and integration difficulties in this case. PDMS-2 scores indicated the child was far behind his peers in fine and gross motor areas. In addition, systematic observations determined that the child's GMFCS level was III. After 8 weeks of ASI intervention significant improvements were found in parent reports of sensory processing in the areas of vestibular, tactile, and oral functioning on the Sensory Profile. Gains in functional motor skills were found on the GMFM-88 and the GMFCS. Consistent with these results, significant gains at or above expected levels of performance were found on GAS goals which reflected the family's main concerns for social participation, feeding, play, and movement. There are limited studies on sensory processing and integration in children with RSTS. This case report identified sensory processing and integration difficulties for the first time in a child with RSTS. Results also provide preliminary support for the positive effects of ASI intervention on sensory processing, functional motor skills, and parental goals of a child with RSTS.

Abstract
Cortical vision impairment (CVI) and Cerebral Palsy (CP) lead to decrement in sensory and motor functions of infants. The current study examined the effectiveness of sensory integration interventions on sensory, motor, and oculomotor skills in infants with cortical vision impairment. Thirty-four infants with and CP aged 12−18 months were enrolled to the study. The infants were randomly divided into two groups as the control and intervention groups. The intervention group took sensory integration intervention 2 days a week for 8 weeks in addition to conventional physiotherapy 2 days a week for 8 weeks. The control group only received the conventional physiotherapy program 2 days a week for 8 weeks. The duration of the treatment sessions were 45 min for both interventions. Before and after the intervention, sensory processing functions were evaluated with the Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI), and motor functions were evaluated with the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). There was a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-test mean TSFI total and AIMS scores in the intervention group and control group (p < 0.001). The intervention group mean TSFI scores were more statistically significant than the those of the control group. Mean post-intervention AIMS scores did not differ between groups. Sensory integration intervention delivered with the conventional physiotherapy program was more effective than the conventional physiotherapy program in increasing sensory processing skills in one measure in infants with CVI and CP.

Abstract
At birth, the vestibular system is fully mature, whilst higher order sensory processing is yet to develop in the full-term neonate. The current paper lays out a theoretical framework to account for the role vestibular stimulation may have driving multisensory and sensorimotor integration. Accordingly, vestibular stimulation, by activating the parieto-insular vestibular cortex, and/or the posterior parietal cortex may provide the cortical input for multisensory neurons in the superior colliculus that is needed for multisensory processing. Furthermore, we propose that motor development, by inducing change of reference frames, may shape the receptive field of multisensory neurons. This, by leading to lack of spatial contingency between formally contingent stimuli, may cause degradation of prior motor responses. Additionally, we offer a testable hypothesis explaining the beneficial effect of sensory integration therapies regarding attentional processes. Key concepts of a sensorimotor integration therapy (e.g., targeted sensorimotor therapy (TSMT)) are also put into a neurological context. TSMT utilizes specific tools and instruments. It is administered in 8-weeks long successive treatment regimens, each gradually increasing vestibular and postural stimulation, so sensory-motor integration is facilitated, and muscle strength is increased. Empirically TSMT is indicated for various diseases. Theoretical foundations of this sensorimotor therapy are discussed.

Abstract
Premature birth is the most common cause for a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) among neonates. Premature birth leads to prematurity, which is associated with complications such as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), hyperbilirubinemia, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), intraventricular hemorrhage (periventricular leukomalacia), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and so on. These secondary complications are of great concern and need to be handled with care to prevent the further deterioration of the quality of life of the baby as he grows. So, the early physiotherapeutic interventional approach comes into light and plays an important role in neonatal care.This case study demonstrates an infant boy of seven months chronological age, who had a preterm birth history with a poor APGAR (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration) score and NICU stay during the first three months of life. He approached the physiotherapy outpatient department with a complaint of delayed motor milestones like an absence of head holding, rolling, opening of hand, as well as delayed social-emotional development, Ryles tube (RT) in situ, with frequent episodes of GERD, neck rotated to the left side, high irritability, tactile defensiveness of both hands, and difficulty in regulating his sensory systems. Outcome measures used were gross motor function measure (GMFM), sensory profile, and rotating chair test. Early interventional physiotherapy was given including neurodevelopmental techniques (NDT), oromotor stimulation, sensory integration, passive stretching, and myofascial release for six days per week with each session of 45 minutes. The results demonstrated the achievement of motor milestones till sitting independently, reduced episodes of GERD, discontinued RT in situ, improved mobility of neck on both sides, reduced irritability, and started reaching, grasping along with bimanual tasks.

Abstract
Introduction. Children born prematurely have an increased risk of immediate medical complications, as well as socioemotional, cognitive, linguistic and sensory processing disorders later in life. Studies have examined the effects of prematurity on developmental outcomes, such as cognition, however, there is a need for a more detailed examination of sensory processing disorders in preterm infants. Not only is prenatal neurosensory development interrupted in utero, but these children may also experience intense stimulation in the neonatal unit, which can further alter the development and function of the sensory system. Objective. The paper presents an overview of research on sensory processing disorders in premature infants, with special emphasis on the impact of the environment of the neonatal unit. Method. Insight into the relevant literature was performed by specialized search engines on the Internet and insight into the electronic database. Results. Sensory processing disorders affect 39% to 52% of newborns born prematurely, with some evidence to suggest that children born before 32 weeks are most at risk. The literature to date has consistently reported difficulties in sensory modulation of preterm infants, within the tactile, vestibular, auditory, oral, and visual domains. Conclusion. Sensory processing disorders in preterm infants appear to occur as a result of their immature neurological and biological system and being in the environment of a neonatal intensive care unit, which is unable to meet the sensory needs of preterm infants. Altered sensory experiences, during periods of neurodevelopmental vulnerability and fragility, can result in sensory processing disorders, which may include enhanced responses or less response to stimuli (hyper or hyposensitivity).

Abstract
PURPOSE/AIM This study aimed to evaluate the sensory processing abilities of young adults with a history of preterm birth and the factors affecting these abilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-seven young adults with preterm birth history were included. After recording their sociodemographic data, sensory processing functions were evaluated using the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. The participants' data were compared to normative samples. RESULTS Mean score was 43.51 ± 8.29 for sensory sensitivity, 44.45 ± 9.19 for sensation avoiding, 33.43 ± 8.45 for low registration, and 47.97 ± 9.91 for sensation seeking. Compared to normative samples, 78% of participants in sensation avoiding quadrant, 62% of participants in sensory sensitivity quadrant, 40% of participants in low registration quadrant and sensation seeking quadrant had atypical scores. When sensory profile scores were analysed according to mode of birth, percentages of typical sensory sensitivity and sensation avoiding were low in both the normal vaginal and caesarean delivery subgroups. When analysed by gestational age at birth, ratios of abnormality in sensation avoiding were similar between individuals with very early, early, and late preterm delivery history. Statistically significant difference was found in low registration and sensation avoiding quadrants according to mode of birth (p < .05). There were no statistically significant sex-based and gestational age at birth differences in any of the four quadrants of the sensory profile in the preterm group (p > .05). CONCLUSION These results showed that young adults with preterm birth history have differences in sensory processing compared to the general population and should be evaluated for sensory processing patterns.

Abstract
AIM Preterm birth poses concerns in daily functioning and behaviour in childhood, possibly connected to sensory processing disorder. This review aimed to systematically identify assessments, incidence and nature of sensory processing disorder in preterm-born infants and children. METHODS We searched literature through CINAHL-EBSCOhost, Cochrane, Ovid/PsychINFO, PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Google Scholar, published until November 2018. We included electronically available, peer-reviewed studies of preterm-born children that applied standardised sensory processing assessments. We excluded studies of preterm-born children with major neurodevelopmental impairments. RESULTS We identified 27 studies of premature children, aged from birth to 9 years 7 months. The assessments represented three versions of Sensory Profile questionnaires and three clinical tests, Test of Sensory Functions in Infants, the Miller Assessment for Preschoolers, and the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test. The studies revealed wide variation of atypical sensory processing: 28%-87% in sensory modulation, 9%-70% in somatosensory processing and 20%-70% in sensory-based motor processing. CONCLUSION Preterm-born children exhibited elevated risk for sensory processing disorder from infancy into school age. Routine screening of sensory processing, intervention intervals and parental consultations should be considered in ameliorating sensory processing and neurocognitive development. Moreover, a larger body of intervention studies is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prematurity may be a risk factor for sensory processing difficulties. Limited research has investigated sensory processing in preterm infants in their first year of life, when sensory processing dysfunctions are more subtle and difficult to detect. AIMS The aims of this study were to investigate the association between prematurity and sensory processing and the associations between sensory processing and motor and cognitive development in infants at 12 months of age. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS 45 infants allocated in two groups: control (37-41 weeks' gestation) and preterm (<34 weeks' gestation). OUTCOME MEASURES Sensory processing was assessed with the Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI). Motor and cognitive development was assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III). RESULTS Preterm group was associated with significant decrease in TSFI's total (p < 0.01), reactivity to deep tactile pressure (p = 0.02) and vestibular stimulation reactivity (p = 0.03) scores. Bayley-III motor score was positive associated with TFSI score on ocular-motor control domain (p = 0.03). Bayley-III cognitive score and TSFI scores were not significantly associated. CONCLUSIONS Prematurity negatively interferes with sensory processing, especially in tactile and vestibular domains, and better sensory processing in ocular-motor control contributes to better motor performance at 12 months of age. It is important to consider sensory processing in early developmental evaluation and interventions to promote better developmental outcomes in preterm infants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite advances in the health and long-term survival of infants born preterm, they continue to face developmental challenges including higher risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and atypical sensory processing patterns. AIMS This secondary analysis aimed to describe sensory profiles and explore effects of combined dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) supplementation on parent-reported sensory processing in toddlers born preterm who were exhibiting ASD symptoms. STUDY DESIGN 90-day randomized, double blinded, placebo-controlled trial. SUBJECTS 31 children aged 18-38months who were born at ≤29weeks' gestation. OUTCOME MEASURE Mixed effects regression analyses followed intent to treat and explored effects on parent-reported sensory processing measured by the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile (ITSP). RESULTS Baseline ITSP scores reflected atypical sensory processing, with the majority of atypical scores falling below the mean. Sensory processing sections: auditory (above=0%, below=65%), vestibular (above=13%, below=48%), tactile (above=3%, below=35%), oral sensory (above=10%; below=26%), visual (above=10%, below=16%); sensory processing quadrants: low registration (above=3%; below=71%), sensation avoiding (above=3%; below=39%), sensory sensitivity (above=3%; below=35%), and sensation seeking (above=10%; below=19%). Twenty-eight of 31 children randomized had complete outcome data. Although not statistically significant (p=0.13), the magnitude of the effect for reduction in behaviors associated with sensory sensitivity was medium to large (effect size=0.57). No other scales reflected a similar magnitude of effect size (range: 0.10 to 0.32). CONCLUSIONS The findings provide support for larger randomized trials of omega fatty acid supplementation for children at risk of sensory processing difficulties, especially those born preterm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurodevelopmental sequelae in preterm born children are generally considered to result from cerebral white matter damage and noxious effects of environmental factors in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Cerebral white matter damage is associated with sensory processing problems in terms of registration, integration and modulation. However, research into sensory processing problems and, in particular, sensory modulation problems, is scarce in preterm children. AIM This review aims to integrate available evidence on sensory modulation problems in preterm infants and children (<37 weeks of gestation) and their association with neurocognitive and behavioral problems. METHOD Relevant studies were extracted from PubMed, EMBASE.com and PsycINFO following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Selection criteria included assessment of sensory modulation in preterm born children (<37 weeks of gestation) or with prematurity as a risk factor. RESULTS Eighteen studies were included. Results of this review support the presence of sensory modulation problems in preterm children. Although prematurity may distort various aspects of sensory modulation, the nature and severity of sensory modulation problems differ widely between studies. CONCLUSIONS Sensory modulation problems may play a key role in understanding neurocognitive and behavioral sequelae in preterm children. Some support is found for a dose-response relationship between both white matter brain injury and length of NICU stay and sensory modulation problems.
