Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Self-Esteem among Nursing Students

Introduction

Nursing students must be able to detect the standpoints and demands of various sorts of individuals, as well as be competent in taking into account individual emotional reactions, self-confidence, stress management, and social role promotion.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem among fourth-year nursing students.

Methods

The study was a cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 225 nursing students through a convenience sampling method in spring 2023 at Arab American University. The instruments of the study included "Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test" and the "Rosenberg self-esteem scale."

Results

The analysis indicated that the emotional intelligence mean was 151.3 ± 1.9 (ranging from 33 to 165), which is high. Also, the analysis indicated that the self-esteem of the nursing students was high 24.3 ± 3.5 (ranging from 0 to 30). Furthermore, the analysis showed that there was a moderately positive relationship between nurses' emotional intelligence and self-esteem.

Conclusion

The emotional intelligence and self-esteem among fourth-year nursing students were high. Also, self-esteem was found to have a moderately positive relationship with emotional intelligence and utilizing emotions.

Psychological Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Nursing Students: Palestinian Perspective

Introduction

COVID-19 has had an important effect on nursing students, with some having their clinical practice cancelled or suspended and others suffering from the virus.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to assess the psychological status in terms of stress, anxiety, and depression of nursing students during COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

The study was cross-sectional, carried out by a convenience sample of 320 participants of nursing students between May and June 2020. Data collection was performed by "Depression Anxiety Stress-21 Scale" (DASS-21).

Results

The results revealed that 78 (24.3%) of participants reported stress; 121 (37.8%) reported anxiety; and 72 (22.5%) reported depression. Also, grade and socioeconomic status had statistically significant effect on anxiety, stress, and depression. In addition, age had statistically significant effect on depression, place of residence had statistically significant effect on anxiety, and gender had statistically significant effect on stress.

Conclusion

The study confirmed an alarming number of nursing students who experienced anxiety, stress, and depression. This study serves as an evidence concerning nursing students' mental health issues as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The effect of the demonstration-based progressive muscle relaxation technique on stress and anxiety in nurses caring for COVID-19 patients: a randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Caring for patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) challenges nurses and causes them to experience stress and anxiety. From this perspective, it is of utmost importance to develop quick and effective intervention strategies to prevent numerous complications. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the progressive muscle relaxation technique, using the demonstration method on the stress and anxiety of nurses who care for COVID-19 patients.

METHODS

This randomized clinical trial was conducted in 2021. Forty-six nurses working in two referral hospitals with wards for COVID-19 patients in Tehran, Iran recruited by convenience sampling method and then randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The nurses in the experimental group educated the progressive muscle relaxation by the demonstration method, and they were encouraged to practice it. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 was utilized to measure the stress and anxiety levels in the nurses.

RESULTS

Before the intervention, the levels of stress in the experimental and control groups were 13.91 ± 2.41 vs. 14.34 ± 2.74 (p = 0.571), and their anxiety was 13.34 ± 3.41 vs. 12.78 ± 2.21 (p = 0.510), respectively. After the intervention, the levels of stress in the experimental and control groups were 10.95 ± 2.01 vs. 14.17 ± 2.34 (p < 0.001), and their anxiety was 9.47 ± 2.37 vs. 12.91 ± 1.85 (p < 0.001), respectively. Moreover, the levels of stress and anxiety in the experimental group significantly diminished after intervention (p < 0.001), but no significant changes were observed in the control group (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Concerning the effectiveness of the progressive muscle relaxation technique in relieving the stress and anxiety of the nurses caring for COVID-19 patients, it is suggested to include this relaxation technique in nursing courses.
