Maternal psychological control and adolescent adjustment: Sleep as a moderator

Maternal psychological control has been linked consistently to poorer adjustment for adolescents, however, studies of variability in the association between psychological control and adjustment are rare. Sleep serves crucial bioregulatory functions that promote well-being and protect youths against poor adjustment associated with negative family environments. We hypothesised that the link between maternal psychological control and adolescent maladjustment would be strongest for youths with poorer actigraphy-based sleep. The current study included 245 adolescents (Mage  = 15.79 years, 52.2% girls, 33.1% Black/African American and 66.9% White/European American; 43% at or below the poverty line). Adolescents reported on their mothers' psychological control toward them, as well as their internalising and externalising symptoms (aggressive and rule breaking behaviours). Several sleep variables were derived: minutes, onset time, and variability in each parameter over 1 week. For youths with shorter, less consistent sleep (both mean levels and variability in minutes and onset), maternal psychological control was associated with adjustment difficulties, especially externalising symptoms. This association was not significant for youth obtaining longer, more consistent sleep. The results were most evident for variability in sleep minutes and onset as moderators of effects. The findings suggest that longer and more consistent sleep is an important protective factor in the context of more controlling parenting.

Fit24, a digital health intervention to reduce type 2 diabetes risk among Hispanic youth: Protocol for a feasibility pilot study

BACKGROUND

Poor physical activity (PA) and sleep behaviors in Hispanic adolescents contributes to increased risk for type 2 diabetes. Commonly owned digital devices and services like smartphones and text-messaging are highly used among adolescents and are promising intervention tools for reaching this age group. Personal activity trackers assess activity and sleep, making them ideal tools for addressing these behaviors. We propose to examine the feasibility of a 12-week intervention that uses theoretically grounded text messages and a Fitbit device to improve PA and sleep among Hispanic adolescents with obesity, as compared to a wait-list control group with a Fitbit device only.

METHODS

Participants (N = 48; 14-16 years) will be randomized (1:1) to the intervention or wait-list control group. Youth in the intervention will receive a Fitbit Charge 5 and daily text messages. Youth in the wait-list control group will receive a Fitbit Charge 5 and information on PA and sleep guidelines.

RESULTS

Feasibility will be examined by collecting process evaluation data on the following criteria: (1) recruit 48 Hispanic adolescents 14-16 years; (2) retain 85% of participants for post-assessments; (3) Fitbit wear ≥4 days/week and respond to 80% of text messages when prompted; (4) ≤10% technical issues; and (5) obtain 80% satisfaction from participants.

DISCUSSION

This study will advance our knowledge on the feasibility of digital prevention strategies to promote PA and sleep behaviors to reduce T2D risk among Hispanic youth. If feasible, this approach has the potential to be a scalable, cost-effective diabetes prevention strategy among high-risk youth.

Longitudinal interplays between basic psychological need satisfaction and sleep among older adults in China

RATIONALE

Older people's sleep and associated health implications loom large in aging societies. Self-determination theory indicates lagged or immediate interplays between subjective sleep and satisfaction of basic psychological needs (for autonomy, relatedness, and competence). However, little is known about their longitudinal dynamics in later life.

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated longitudinal reciprocities between satisfaction of basic psychological needs and subjective sleep for older people and controlled for six sociodemographic and health-related covariates.

METHOD

Three waves of data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2011, 2014, and 2017) were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (N = 2,834, 52.68% women, Mean age = 78.36). Participants reported sleep quality and duration, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and sociodemographic and health characteristics. Four competing models were examined: Model A conceptualized lagged effects of sleep on need satisfaction and vice versa (i.e. cross-lagged design), Model B described immediate needs' effects on sleep but lagged opposite effects, Model C reversed Model B's specifications, and Model D portrayed concurrent feedback loops.

RESULTS

It was found that satisfaction of psychological needs and sleep quality declined over the seven-year span, but sleep length only fluctuated trivially. All models fitted the data well, where better sleep quality consistently predicted higher levels of need satisfaction, especially for relatedness and competence. Sleep interacted most robustly with relatedness: Models A, B, and C revealed positive lagged or immediate reciprocities between sleep quality and relatedness, and Model D yielded negative feedback loops between sleep length and relatedness.

CONCLUSIONS

The study identified longitudinal immediate or lagged interplays between need satisfaction and sleep for older people, especially concerning relatedness need. Implementation of need-supportive interventions and promotion of healthy sleep habits are necessary for healthy aging.

Wearable and mobile technology to characterize daily patterns of sleep, stress, presleep worry, and mood in adolescent insomnia

OBJECTIVES

Characterizing daily patterns of sleep, stress, presleep worry, and mood in adolescents with and without insomnia symptomatology.

DESIGN

Two months of continuous wearable tracking and daily diary ratings.

SETTING

Free-living conditions.

PARTICIPANTS

Ninety-three adolescents (59 girls; 16-19 years old) with (N = 47; 26 with clinical and 21 with sub-clinical) and without (N = 46; control) DSM-5 insomnia symptomatology.

MEASUREMENTS

Fitbit Charge 3 tracked sleep, heart rate, and steps. Evening electronic diaries collected ratings of daily stress, presleep worry, and mood.

RESULTS

While sleep duration (control: 6.88 ± 1.41 hours; insomnia: 6.92 ± 1.28 hours), architecture, timing, and night-to-night variability were similar between groups, the insomnia group reported higher levels of stress and worry, being mainly related to "school". At the intraindividual level, stress and worry predicted shorter sleep duration and earlier wake up times, which, in turn, predicted higher stress the following day. Moreover, higher-than-usual stress predicted higher sleep-time heart rate, with a more consistent effect in adolescents with insomnia. Results were overall consistent after controlling for covariates and several robustness checks.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a bidirectional relationship between daily stress and sleep, with daily stress negatively impacting sleep, which in turn leads to more stress in adolescents with and without insomnia symptoms. Findings also highlight the complexity of insomnia in adolescence, in which the core clinical features (perceived sleep difficulties) and the critical factors (stress/worry) implicated in the pathophysiology of the disorder are not necessarily reflected in objective sleep indicators.

Linking ethnic/racial discrimination to adolescent mental health: Sleep disturbances as an explanatory pathway

Ethnic/racial discrimination is associated with negative psychosocial outcomes, and this study considered sleep disturbance as a mediating pathway. Employing a combination of daily diary and biannual surveys, multilevel structural equation models estimated the indirect effects of sleep/wake concerns on negative, anxious, and positive mood, rumination, and somatic symptoms. In a sample of 350 urban Asian (74% Chinese, 8% Korean, 4% Indian, 1% Filipinx, 1% Vietnamese, and 12% other), Black, and Latinx (25% Dominican, 24% South American, 22% Mexican, 15% Puerto Rican, 5% Central American, and 9% other) youth (M = 14.27 years, 69% female, 77% U.S. born, 76% monoethnic/racial, data collected from 2015 to 2018), there was evidence for sleep disturbances mediating the impact of ethnic/racial discrimination on adjustment. Nighttime disturbance, daytime dysfunction, and daytime sleepiness evidenced partial or full mediation for daily‐ and person‐level outcomes (υ = 0.1%–17.9%). Reciprocal associations between sleep disturbances and negative mood and rumination were also observed.

Do Psychological Needs Play a Role in Times of Uncertainty? Associations with Well-Being During the COVID-19 Crisis

Across the world, measures were taken to contain the spreading of the COVID-19 virus. Many of these measures caused a sudden rupture in people's daily routines, thereby eliciting considerable uncertainty and potentially also hampering the satisfaction of individuals' psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Drawing upon Maslow's Hierarchical Need Theory and Self-Determination Theory, this study examined the unique role of felt insecurity and the psychological needs, as well as their dynamic interplay, in the prediction of mental health. A large and heterogeneous sample of adults (N = 5118; Mage = 43.45 years) was collected during the first ten days of the lockdown period in Flanders, Belgium. A subsample (N = 835, Mage = 41.39) participated during a second wave one week later. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that felt insecurity, need satisfaction and need frustration all independently predicted various positive (life satisfaction, sleep quality) and negative indicators depressive symptoms, anxiety) of mental health, with little systematic evidence for interactions between the predictors. The pattern of findings obtained concurrently largely held in the longitudinal analyses. Finally, results showed that associations between felt insecurity and lower concurrent and prospective mental health were partially mediated by need satisfaction and frustration, with especially psychological need frustration predicting changes in mental health over time. Overall, the findings suggest that satisfaction of the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness is not just a 'luxury good'. Satisfaction of these needs is important also in times of insecurity, while need frustration represents a risk factor for maladjustment during such times.

Daily ups and downs in adolescents' depressive symptoms: The role of daily self-criticism, dependency and basic psychological needs

INTRODUCTION

Although associations between Blatt's personality dimensions of self-criticism and dependency and adolescents' depressive symptoms are well-established, only few studies have examined associations between these variables at the level of daily, within-person fluctuations. Moreover, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this personality vulnerability to depressive symptoms is limited. Therefore, we studied (a) daily fluctuations in both personality and depressive symptoms over a 7-day period and (b) the possible interplay between daily variations in personality vulnerability, need-based experiences (as conceptualized in Self-Determination Theory), and depressive symptoms. This interplay was examined in terms of both a mediational and a moderating role of the need-based experiences.

METHODS

Participants were 121 Belgian adolescents (M_age = 15.81; SD_age = 1.50; 52 % male) who completed questionnaires tapping into daily self-criticism, dependency, need-based experiences, and depressive symptoms every evening during seven consecutive days.

RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS

Multilevel analysis revealed that self-criticism and dependency fluctuated substantially on a daily basis. These daily fluctuations in personality were related to daily fluctuations in depressive symptoms, with daily variation in need-based experiences mediating these associations. We found no evidence for interactions between personality and the need-based experiences. The findings underscore the importance of considering daily fluctuations in individuals' personality vulnerability and point to the explanatory role of need-based experiences in the relation between personality and depressive symptoms on a daily basis.
