The conical scanner: a two transducer ultrasound scatter imaging technique

Generating Bessel beams with broad depth-of-field by using phase-only acoustic holograms

We report zero-th and high-order acoustic Bessel beams with broad depth-of-field generated using acoustic holograms. While the transverse field distribution of Bessel beams generated using traditional passive methods is correctly described by a Bessel function, these methods present a common drawback: the axial distribution of the field is not constant, as required for ideal Bessel beams. In this work, we experimentally, numerically and theoretically report acoustic truncated Bessel beams of flat-intensity along their axis in the ultrasound regime using phase-only holograms. In particular, the beams present a uniform field distribution showing an elongated focal length of about 40 wavelengths, while the transverse width of the beam remains smaller than 0.7 wavelengths. The proposed acoustic holograms were compared with 3D-printed fraxicons, a blazed version of axicons. The performance of both phase-only holograms and fraxicons is studied and we found that both lenses produce Bessel beams in a wide range of frequencies. In addition, high-order Bessel beam were generated. We report first order Bessel beams that show a clear phase dislocation along their axis and a vortex with single topological charge. The proposed method may have potential applications in ultrasonic imaging, biomedical ultrasound and particle manipulation applications using passive lenses.

Review of tissue simulating phantoms for optical spectroscopy, imaging and dosimetry

Optical spectroscopy, imaging, and therapy tissue phantoms must have the scattering and absorption properties that are characteristic of human tissues, and over the past few decades, many useful models have been created. In this work, an overview of their composition and properties is outlined, by separating matrix, scattering, and absorbing materials, and discussing the benefits and weaknesses in each category. Matrix materials typically are water, gelatin, agar, polyester or epoxy and polyurethane resin, room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone, or polyvinyl alcohol gels. The water and hydrogel materials provide a soft medium that is biologically and biochemically compatible with addition of organic molecules, and are optimal for scientific laboratory studies. Polyester, polyurethane, and silicone phantoms are essentially permanent matrix compositions that are suitable for routine calibration and testing of established systems. The most common three choices for scatters have been: (1.) lipid based emulsions, (2.) titanium or aluminum oxide powders, and (3.) polymer microspheres. The choice of absorbers varies widely from hemoglobin and cells for biological simulation, to molecular dyes and ink as less biological but more stable absorbers. This review is an attempt to indicate which sets of phantoms are optimal for specific applications, and provide links to studies that characterize main phantom material properties and recipes.

Field computation for two-dimensional array transducers with limited diffraction array beams

A method is developed for calculating fields produced with a two-dimensional (2D) array transducer. This method decomposes an arbitrary 2D aperture weighting function into a set of limited diffraction array beams. Using the analytical expressions of limited diffraction beams, arbitrary continuous wave (cw) or pulse wave (pw) fields of 2D arrays can be obtained with a simple superposition of these beams. In addition, this method can be simplified and applied to a 1D array transducer of a finite or infinite elevation height. For beams produced with axially symmetric aperture weighting functions, this method can be reduced to the Fourier-Bessel method studied previously where an annular array transducer can be used. The advantage of the method is that it is accurate and computationally efficient, especially in regions that are not far from the surface of the transducer (near field), where it is important for medical imaging. Both computer simulations and a synthetic array experiment are carried out to verify the method. Results (Bessel beam, focused Gaussian beam, X wave and asymmetric array beams) show that the method is accurate as compared to that using the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction formula and agrees well with the experiment.

Effects of transmit focusing on finite amplitude distortion based second harmonic generation

Generation of the second harmonic signal was studied for finite amplitude distortion based harmonic imaging. Acoustic field amplitudes along the range axis of a fixed focus transducer were measured using a PVDF needle hydrophone. Results indicated that on-axis amplitudes strongly depended on the f-number at both the fundamental and the second harmonic frequencies. Differences of the on-axis amplitudes between the two frequencies were also investigated. To explore the possibility of increasing harmonic generation by extending the depth of focus, a two-focus transducer was employed. Hydrophone measurements, pulse-echo imaging and simulations were performed. Although the increase in harmonic generation depended on specific imaging parameters, the effectiveness of improving the harmonic signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by increasing the depth of field was clearly demonstrated. Degradation in contrast resolution associated with the two-focus transducer was also evaluated. It was found that the contrast resolution was still significantly better than that of the fundamental image at the same frequency. Results of the study using the two-focus transducers can be generalized to imaging systems with full dynamic transmit focusing capabilities. In other words, it is expected that dynamic transmit focusing can improve the SNR of finite amplitude distortion based second harmonic imaging while improving the contrast resolution over fundamental imaging.

Retrospective dynamic transmit focusing

Dynamically-focused on receive, real-time array systems exhibit image degradation far from the focal zone of the fixed transmit lens. A retrospective filtering technique reducing the effects of the fixed transmitter is presented. The filter deconvolves the defocused transmit pattern producing a new in-focus transmit/receive image, where the filter coefficients are derived with a least-squares method. Experimental results are presented for a 128 channel array system showing the method's performance. A proposed architecture for real-time filtering is also discussed.

Computer simulations of speckle in B-scan images

The granularity or speckle in medical ultrasound images tends to mask the presence of small lesions. As well, artifactual filling in of anechoic regions such as cysts, reduces the diagnostic potential of the images. These effects depend not only on the acoustic properties of the tissue but also are strongly influenced by the imaging system, especially the transducer geometry. To study the effect of the transducer on the final B-scan image, a computer model has been developed simulating the interaction of ultrasound with a simple scattering medium. This model, incorporating the position dependence of the point response of the transducer, is based on single scattering from a collection of points positioned randomly in a three-dimensional volume. Using this approach, B-scan images showing speckle have been generated for different transducer geometries. Inclusion of a 2.6 mm void mimicking a cyst within the three-dimensional scattering volume has allowed us to predict the cyst contrast in the image for the different transducer systems. Experimental B-scan images of a scattering phantom were obtained using the different pulse echo systems. Quantitative assessment using first and second order statistics of the images shows good agreement between experiment and theory.

The improvement and quantitative assessment of B-mode images produced by an annular array/cone hybrid

Hybrid ultrasound imaging systems, which combine spherical focusing on transmit with axicon focusing on receive, provide excellent resolution over a useful depth of field. This paper presents a new hybrid design with improved sensitivity, in which the axicon focusing is achieved by two conical mirrors and a PZT 5A disk out into 8 sectors. We have investigated two methods of processing the signals from the 8 sectors. In the first, phase insensitive sector addition (PISA), the B-scan is formed from the sum of the 8 demodulated signals. In the second, multiplicative processing (MP), the 8 rf waveforms are multiplied and the resultant is demodulated to form the image. Both techniques result in smoothed speckle but degraded lateral resolution. As well, MP decreases the off-axis sensitivity of the system and artifacts characteristic of axicon focusing. Quantitative assessment of the effects of PISA and MP was performed using a new approach called contrast-to-speckle ratio (CSR). The CSR data, which is a measure of the image contrast of cylindrical voids in a random scattering medium relative to contrast fluctuations due to speckle, shows the superiority of PISA and MP. This conclusion is supported by images of in vitro human breast tissue.

An annular array system for high resolution breast echography

Ultrasound B-mode imaging with electronically focused annular arrays has been associated in the past with fairly complex and expensive electronic circuits. When image quality rather than scanning speed is the prime concern, the concept of switched zone focusing offers an attractive alternative to true dynamic focusing previously reported. Strongly focused apertures used in both transmit and receive modes allow improved lateral resolution, lower side lobe levels, higher sensitivity, as well as simplified electronics.

This approach was investigated for the particular case of breast imaging. We outline some general design considerations for water path imaging with annular arrays, and describe the system adopted in the development of a high resolution breast scanner using a sealed, water filled head. Experimental results are compared to theoretical predictions, and grey scale images are presented to illustrate the performance of the instrument.

Transient fields of concave annular arrays

A new analytic expression for the impulse response of concave radiators is used to compute the transient pressure distributions of phased annular arrays with spherical geometry. The process of phasing the array to achieve variable focusing is treated by summing the delayed impulse responses of the individual annuli. The example of pressure distributions of a five element annular array is treated in detail, and some recommendations are given for practical computer studies.
