Relationships among social support, self-concept, and wellbeing of older adults: A study of process using dynamic factor models

Intra-individual patterns of time-lagged relationships among self-reports of social support, self-concept, and physical and psychological wellbeing were investigated. Participants were older adults (mean age = 77 years) who were measured weekly on some scales and biweekly on others, covering a total of 25 weeks. Dynamic factor models were fitted to multivariate repeated measures data pooled over subsets of participants. The results indicate significant time-lagged, cross-factor relationships showing that negative social support has both a direct effect and an indirect effect, through less positive self-concept, on physical health measures. For the measures of negative social support, self-concept, subjective health, and physical performance (gait), there are substantial autoregressive effects indicating persisting factor scores over 1 or 2 weeks. How intra-individual perspectives and methods can facilitate the study of complex developmental processes is discussed.

Intra-individual Change and Inter-individual Differences in Negative Mood States of Older Women

The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the stability and lability of negative mood from a health perspective. Negative mood factor structure was examined in order to evaluate intra-individual change. Few studies have addressed factorial invariance across individuals and across time. The sample was comprised of four women in their 60s and four women in their 80s. Short-term intra-individual change and inter-individual differences in negative mood were assessed with a replicated single-subject design. Participants completed items from the 8SQ questionnaire for 100 consecutive days. P-technique factor analysis was used to examine the structure of negative mood factors, which were than graphed to determine level change over time. The number of factors were consistent, however, the items comprising the factors were not consistent across all participants. Patterns of intra-individual change in the negative mood factor of “ fatigue” was found to be highly individualised.

Changes in eating behavior during the aging process

The changing demographics of the world population necessitate a review of normative eating behavior in order to better differentiate eating pathologies from age-associated changes. This review examines the psychological, social, and physiological changes in aging as they affect eating behavior. Neurochemical and neurophysiological bases of appetite, psychobehavioral models of eating, and concomitant variables of depression, bereavement, and social interactions are examined. As many sensory systems decline with aging, these declines influence food choice and acceptability and may manifest conditions such as geriatric anorexia. Special circumstances of centenarians are discussed to provide further insights into pathological, normative, and superlative aging.

Variability in constraints and functional competence in adults with multiple sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

Examine intraindividual change in physical and psychological impairments associated with multiple sclerosis and assess the relationship between changes in specific deficits and functional competence in activities of daily living.

DESIGN

A multivariate, replicated, single-subject, repeated-measures design was used to examine variability patterns across subjects. Five adults with multiple sclerosis were assessed on leg strength, upright postural control, mood, fatigue, stress, and self-efficacy for 4 mo. Functional competence in three activities of daily living was also evaluated. P-technique factor analyses were performed to examine which variables covaried with time.

RESULTS

Analyses revealed covariation among physical and psychological variables for four of the five participants. Across all participants, coefficients of variation revealed greater variability in stress (32.3%-53.4%) and fatigue (23.4%-5.9%) than in any of the physical variables (<20%), and variability in all impairments was greater than variability in the functional tasks (0%-12.6%).

CONCLUSIONS

The greater stability in functional performance compared with both physical and psychological constraints provides important insight into symptom management and clinical intervention. The magnitude of variability found in the psychological variables across individuals also has implications concerning psychological adjustment to the disease.

Individual differences in the perception of optimism and disease severity: a study among individuals with Parkinson's disease

The extent to which individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) show lability in optimism was explored in the present study. The relationship between optimism and perceived disease severity was examined as well. Twelve individuals diagnosed with PD completed self-report measures for 70 consecutive days. All individuals in this study showed lability in optimism over short time periods; however, 67% of the sample showed no pervasive negative changes in optimism over time. Increased levels of optimism on one day were predictive of decreased perceived disease severity the next day for one-fourth of the sample, after controlling for negative affect. Individual differences in the relationship between optimism and disease severity provided support for the idea that living with chronic illness has no monolithic meaning. More optimistic individuals reported less need for assistance with basic functional abilities than less optimistic individuals. The usefulness of lability in optimism among individuals with PD is discussed.
