Abstract
BACKGROUND Rotating-shift nurses are susceptible to sleep disorders due to numerous factors, such as their biological clock, emotions, and age. At present, a lack of research exists on whether chronotype and shift type jointly influence the sleep quality of nurses. AIM To verify whether chronotype is a moderator variable of the relationship between shift type and sleep quality in nurses in order to provide empirical evidence for future mental and physical health improvement. METHOD Clinical rotating-shift nurses at a medical center in northern Taiwan were recruited as participants between November 1, 2023, and December 13, 2023. All of the nurses were working a monthly rotating shift schedule. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was employed to investigate whether the influence of shift type on sleep quality in nurses varied with chronotype. The STROBE checklist was used for reporting this study. RESULTS The participants were 255 rotating-shift nurses in this study. Hierarchical multiple regression results revealed that rotating-shift nurses who were older (B = 0.19, p = 0.029), had greater physical fatigue (B = 0.27, p = 0.016), and had more negative emotions (B = 0.17, p = 0.011) suffered from poorer sleep quality. After controlling the above factors, we further found that chronotype indeed had moderating effects on the influence of shift type on sleep quality (B = -1.83, p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that early- and intermediate-type nurses are more suitable for working the day and evening shifts, whereas late-type nurses are more suitable for working the night shift. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY Coordinating chronotype with shift type will ensure that shift schedules better match the biological clocks of nurses; such individual considerations could help to improve their sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of registered male nurses has increased in China, yet research specifically addressing their turnover intentions remains limited. While high turnover intention is known to exacerbate the workforce shortage of nurses, the national level and unique factors contributing to turnover intention among registered male nurses in China are unclear and underexplored. AIM This study aimed to investigate the turnover intention of registered male nurses in China and its unique influencing factors, with focus on variables that have received limited attention in previous research. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 13,088 registered male nurses were recruited from over 1,000 hospitals across China between May and August 2023. Data collection was conducted through an online questionnaire. Univariate analysis and multinomial logistics regression were performed to analyze the data. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER Not applicable. RESULTS Our analysis revealed that 71.6% of registered male nurses in China exhibited medium to high turnover intentions. Male nurses with no children, lower occupational prestige, and lower work values were more likely to exhibit a higher turnover intention. Other significant factors contributing to a high turnover intention included low income satisfaction, limited career development opportunities, and minimal support from hospitals. CONCLUSIONS A substantial proportion of registered male nurses in China express moderate to high turnover intentions, driven by factors that extend beyond traditional occupational concerns. This study highlights the importance of addressing less explored variables such as work value, occupational prestige and marital pressures in developing targeted interventions to enhance job satisfaction and reduce turnover within this essential workforce segment.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of shift work on the sleep quality and nutritional status of nurses with different chronotypes. The study was designed to include 21 people from each chronotype and was completed with 60 participants. The participants were asked to record their food consumption during three different types of shifts they worked over a period of three days. We found that the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score of the evening types was higher than that of the morning types (p < 0.05). The evening types had significantly higher weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-height ratio and neck circumference measurements than the morning types (p < 0.05). The daily energy, fat and SFA intakes of the morning types were significantly higher for those working 16:00-08:00 and 08:00-08:00 compared to those working 08:00-16:00 (p < 0.05). The highest carbohydrate intake was between 08:00-08:00. The amount of carbohydrate, energy and SFA consumed by the intermediate types between 08:00 and 08:00 was significantly higher than that consumed between 08:00 and 16:00. Chronotype and shift hours should also be taken into account when developing nutrition plans for participants who work shifts.

Abstract
Objective To explore the association between circadian syndrome (CircS) and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) with psoriasis. Compare the performance of MetS and CircS in predicting psoriasis. Methods An observational study used data from the NHANES surveys conducted in 2005-2006 and 2009-2014. We constructed three multiple logistic regression models to investigate the relationship between MetS, CircS, and their components with psoriasis. The performance of MetS and CircS in predicting psoriasis was compared using five machine-learning algorithms, and the best-performing model was explained via SHAP. Then, bidirectional Mendelian randomization analyses with the inverse variance weighted (IVW) as the primary method were employed to determine the causal effects of each component. Result A total of 9,531 participants were eligible for the study. Both the MetS (OR = 1.53, 95%CI: 1.07-2.17, P = 0.02) and CircS (OR = 1.40, 95%CI: 1.02-1.91, P = 0.039) positively correlated with psoriasis. Each CircS algorithmic model performs better than MetS, with Categorical Features+Gradient Boosting for CircS (the area under the precision-recall curve = 0.969) having the best prediction effect on psoriasis. Among the components of CircS, elevated blood pressure, depression symptoms, elevated waist circumference (WC), and short sleep contributed more to predicting psoriasis. Under the IVW methods, there were significant causal relationships between WC (OR = 1.52, 95%CI: 1.34-1.73, P = 1.35e-10), hypertension (OR = 1.68, 95%CI: 1.19-2.37, P = 0.003), depression symptoms (OR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.17-1.65, P = 1.51e-4), and short sleep (OR = 2.03, 95%CI: 1.21-3.39, p = 0.007) with psoriasis risk. Conclusion CircS demonstrated superior predictive ability for prevalent psoriasis compared to MetS, with elevated blood pressure, depression symptoms, and elevated WC contributing more to the prediction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether chronotype is a moderator variable that also interacts with shift type and whether they jointly influence the attention performance of nurses working in acute and critical care units. METHODS We adopted a longitudinal research design focusing on nurses working rotating shifts in the emergency room and intensive care units at a medical center. A total of 40 complete samples were obtained. Data analysis was conducted using the generalized estimating equations in SAS 9.4. RESULTS The mean (SD) age of the participants was 26.35 (2.12) years. After controlling for age, gender, and sleep duration, an interaction effect was discovered between a specific chronotype and shift type; that is, the interaction effect between chronotype and shift type was only significant when comparing late-types working the night shift with early- and intermediate-types working the night shift (B = -18.81, P = .011). The least squares means of the mean reaction time of the interaction effects between the 2 chronotype groups and the 3 shift types found that the mean reaction time of late-types working the night shift was 11.31 ms (P = .044) slower compared with working the day shift. CONCLUSIONS The chronotype is a moderator variable between shift type and mean reaction time, such that matching the chronotype of nurses in acute and critical care units with the appropriate shift type improved their mean reaction time. It is hoped that the results of this study could serve as a reference for acute and critical care nurses when scheduling their shifts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate factors that influence the sleep quality and menstrual cycles of female rotating-shift nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 213 female rotating-shift nurses between the ages of 20 and 45 were recruited from a medical center in Taiwan from November 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed with regard to sleep quality or menstrual cycle. RESULTS Female rotating-shift nurses who perceived a higher level of stress (P < .001), were late chronotypes (P = .020), or were working the night shift (P = .006) were more likely to have poor sleep quality. Late-type nurses working the day shift were more likely to have poor sleep quality than were early- and intermediate-type nurses (P < .001). With regard to menstrual cycles, female rotating-shift nurses who perceived a higher level of stress (P = .008), were working the night shift (P < .001), or had poor sleep quality (P = .001) were more likely to have irregular menstrual cycles. Late-type nurses working the day shift were more likely to have irregular menstrual cycles than were early- and intermediate-type nurses (P = .013). CONCLUSIONS A higher likelihood of poor sleep quality was found in female rotating-shift nurses when they perceived high levels of stress, and the interactions between chronotype and shift type could influence sleep quality. Shift type and the interactions between chronotype and shift type could also influence menstrual regularity.

Abstract
This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on sleep disturbances in female shift workers. The update Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews was used. Twelve studies were included, four of which used actigraphy to assess sleep duration, efficiency, and latency. Seven studies evaluated the quality of sleep and three verified the sleepiness of women. This review adds to the body of evidence as the findings are homogeneous and allow a robust conclusion, suggesting that night shift work may be a potential factor for adverse effects on sleep of female shift workers.

Abstract
Medication administration errors could result in severe complications in critical care units. This study investigated an association between chronotype, sleep quality and medication errors among essential nurses of care in Qazvin teaching hospitals in Iran. In this multicenter, cross-sectional study, all registered nurses of critical care units of Qazvin teaching hospitals were recruited. Data were collected through anonymous questionnaires, including socio-demographic data, Morning-Evening Questionnaire (MEQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and medication errors data. Data were analyzed with SPSS v.24 by using the Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and logistic regression analysis. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. The mean age and work experience were 33.12 ± 6.74 and 9.11 ± 5.96, respectively. One hundred sixty-six nurses (96%) have been working in rotating shifts. Nurses with intermediate chronotypes were predominant (n = 122; 70.5%). The majority of nurses (68.2%) had poor sleep quality (n = 118). Logistic regression analysis showed eveningness chronotype was associated with 4.743 fold increased risk of medication error (P < 0.033). No association was found between medication error and sleep quality (p < 0.95). There was no significant relationship between chronotype and sleep quality (P < 0.257). Our study showed that nurses with eveningness chronotype make more medication errors; therefore, considering the individual circadian preference before deciding on their shift timing assignment will be an important issue in reducing nurses' medication errors and improving patient safety in critical care units.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Shift work and resulting sleep impairment among nurses can increase their risk for poor health outcomes, occupational injuries, and errors due to sleep deficiencies. While sleep education and training for nurses has been recommended as part of a larger fatigue risk management system, little is known about training programs designed specifically for nurses. OBJECTIVE Investigate the literature for current sleep education or training programs specifically for shift working nurses, with intent to assess training content, delivery characteristics, and outcome measures. DESIGN A scoping review conducted October 2020 through September 2021. METHODS The bibliographic databases Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Scopus, PubMed, and NIOSHTIC-2 were searched using words such as "nurse," "sleep hygiene," "shift work," and "education". Studies were included if they: 1) were original research; 2) discussed sleep education, training, or sleep hygiene interventions; 3) included a study population of nurses engaging in shift work; 4) focused on sleep as a primary study measure; 5) were written in English language; and 6) were published in 2000 or later. RESULTS Search results included 17,237 articles. After duplicates were removed, 14,620 articles were screened. Nine articles were found to meet established criteria. All studies included sleep hygiene content in the training programs, with five studies adding psychological and/or behavior change motivation training to support change in nurse sleep habits. Three studies added specific training for nurses and for managers. Delivery modes included in-person training of various lengths and frequency, mobile phone application with daily engagement, an online self-guided presentation, and daily reading material coupled with audio training. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale were the outcome measures most frequently used. Although studies demonstrated improved sleep measures, most were pilot studies testing feasibility. CONCLUSION Although there is a paucity of studies focused on sleep education and training for shift working nurses, we found the inclusion of sleep hygiene content was the only common characteristic of all nine studies. The variability in training content, delivery methods, and outcome measures suggests further research is needed on what constitutes effective sleep education and training for nurses.

Abstract
The human circadian system plays a vital role in many physiological processes, and circadian rhythms are found in virtually all tissues and organs. The disruption of circadian rhythms may lead to adverse health outcomes. Evidence from recent population-based studies was reviewed because they represent real-world behavior and can be useful in developing future studies to reduce the risk of adverse health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes mellitus, which may occur because of circadian disruption. An electronic search in PubMed and Web of Science (2012-2022) was performed. Selected articles were based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Five factors that may disrupt circadian rhythm alignment are discussed: shift work, late chronotype, late sleep timing, sleep irregularity, and late meal timing. Evidence from observational studies of these circadian disruptors suggests potential detrimental effects on cardiometabolic health, including higher BMI/obesity, higher blood pressure, greater dyslipidemia, greater inflammation, and diabetes. Future research should identify the specific underlying pathways in order to mitigate the health consequences of shift work. Furthermore, optimal sleep and mealtimes for metabolic health can be explored in intervention studies. Lastly, it is important that the timing of external environmental cues (such as light) and behaviors that influence circadian rhythms are managed.

Abstract
Background and Aims Due to the heavy working shifts, emergency nurses may have to sleep at unusual times of the day, affecting their spouse's sleep. This study proposed to detect the relationship between the woman emergency nurse's sleep quality and the sleep quality of their spouses. Methods This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study has lasted for 4 months since June 21, 2020. The study population was all women nurses working at a hospital emergency department. The data was collected by a demographic questionnaire and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) for nurses and their spouses. The data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results The prevalence of sleep quality disorder among female emergency department nurses and their husbands was 82.7% and 80.6%, respectively. The mean sleep quality score of female nurses and their husbands was 8.46 ± 4.43 and 6.50 ± 2.52, respectively. A strong and positive correlation was found between the PSQI score of female nurses and their husbands (p < 0.001). The regression model showed that increasing the body mass index (BMI) of female emergency nurses can decrease their sleep quality. However, increasing the BMI of female emergency nurses' spouses and their work experience in the emergency department can improve their sleep quality. Conclusion The sleep quality of female emergency department nurses was directly correlated with their husbands' sleep quality. Therefore, the sleep quality of nurses working in the emergency departments and their spouses should be examined periodically.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to identify the predictors of depression among female rotating-shift nurses. DESIGN AND METHODS This secondary data analysis used data of 190 Korean female rotating-shift nurses from the parent study conducted in 2018. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the predictors of depression. FINDINGS Young age, poor sleep quality, and greater morning-shift social jetlag predicted depression among female nurses working a three-shift schedule. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nursing management should consider scheduling shifts to minimize nurses' social jetlag and develop interventions for improving sleep quality to prevent depression among female rotating-shift nurses.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To investigate whether the sleep quality and fatigue of female nurses working rotating shifts could be used to predict future turnover status. BACKGROUND Female nurses working rotating shifts often suffer from sleep problems and fatigue, and the turnover rates of nurses are generally higher than those of other hospital personnel. DESIGN A prospective study. METHODS We recruited a total of 198 female nurses working rotating shifts from December 2017 to March 2019. The nurses completed the Checklist Individual Strength (CIS) scale and wore an actigraph for seven consecutive days in order to collect their sleep parameters. Their turnover status was tracked until 31 May 2021 at which time 55 participants (27.8%) had resigned. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyse the factors influencing turnover. In addition, the study adhered to the STROBE checklist. RESULTS The results revealed significant differences between the nurses in the still-working group and the resigned group in terms of the sleep quality parameters sleep efficiency (SE) and wake after sleep onset (WASO) as well as CIS scores. WASO was significantly correlated with intensity of fatigue, and fatigue was common among all of the nurses working rotating shifts. As time progressed, the sleep quality parameter WASO and CIS scores could be used to predict turnover status after 2.4 years. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicated more sleep fragmentation and poor sleep efficiency in the resigned group. Sleep fragmentation was highly correlated with fatigue, and sleep fragmentation and fatigue could be used to predict turnover status. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE We suggest that relevant hospital management pay more attention to the sleep conditions and fatigue of female nurses working rotating shifts when arranging personnel and schedules and offer them more understanding.

Abstract
Circadian rhythms are responsible for regulating a number of physiological processes. The central oscillator is located within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus and the SCN synchronises the circadian clocks that are found in our peripheral organs through neural and humoral signalling. At the molecular level, biological clocks consist of transcription-translation feedback loops (TTFLs) and these pathways are influenced by transcription factors, post-translational modifications, signalling pathways and epigenetic modifiers. When disruptions occur in the circadian machinery, the activities of the proteins implicated in this network and the expression of core clock or clock-controlled genes (CCGs) can be altered. Circadian misalignment can also arise when there is desychronisation between our internal clocks and environmental stimuli. There is evidence in the literature demonstrating that disturbances in the circadian rhythm contribute to the pathophysiology of several diseases and disorders. This includes the metabolic syndrome and recently, it has been suggested that the 'circadian syndrome' may be a more appropriate term to use to not only describe the cardio-metabolic risk factors but also the associated comorbidities. Here we overview the molecular architecture of circadian clocks in mammals and provide insight into the effects of shift work, exposure to artificial light, food intake and stress on the circadian rhythm. The relationship between circadian rhythms, metabolic disorders and depression is reviewed and this is a topic that requires further investigation. We also describe how particular proteins involved in the TTFLs can be potentially modulated by small molecules, including pharmacological interventions and dietary compounds.
