Abstract
OBJECTIVE Identify, describe and produce an evidence map of studies investigating psychosocial factors association with, or effect on, clinical outcomes for people with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS Scoping review of interventional and observational studies was performed. Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Cumulated Index in Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycInfo and Web of Science were searched on the 15th May 2023. Screening, data extraction and analysis was performed by two independent researchers. Extracted information included characteristics of studies plus which psychosocial factors were used to investigate association with, or effect on, clinical outcome(s). Descriptive statistics summarized the study design, temporal trend, geographic distribution, frequency of each psychosocial factor and whether associations/effects were observed. RESULTS 23,065 records were screened, with 108 studies selected. Eighty-two percent of studies (n = 89/108) were cross-sectional in design. Number of studies increased over time and spanned 28 countries. Most research originated from the Americas region (55 %, 59/108). Twenty-four psychosocial factors (11 psychological, 13 social) were identified. Depression (47 %, n = 48/102) and education (28 %, n = 29/102) were the most frequently reported psychological and social factors, respectively. Psychological factors were often reported to have an association with/effect on pain (81 %, n = 71/88) and physical function (75 %, n = 56/74). Social factors were less frequently reported to have an association with or effect on pain (57 %, n = 46/81) and physical function (50 %, n = 18/36). CONCLUSION Psychosocial factors are often associated with clinical outcomes for people with knee osteoarthritis. High-quality longitudinal studies examining a wide range of psychosocial factors across diverse cultural and geographical settings are key to continue informing the development of biopsychosocial models of care.

Abstract
This overview of reviews aimed to synthesize the effectiveness of non-pharmacological approaches to enhance self-efficacy in people with osteoarthritis. The CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched from inception to December 2023. We considered systematic reviews with meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials evaluating any non-pharmacological intervention. We used AMSTAR 2 to assess the methodological quality of reviews. The overlap between reviews was calculated. We included eight systematic reviews with meta-analysis evaluating 30 different clinical trials. Overall, mind-body exercises, psychological interventions, and self-management strategies may improve arthritis self-efficacy. Specifically, the meta-analyses showed tai chi exercises, coping skills training, and the arthritis self-management program are more effective than controls to enhance arthritis self-efficacy in people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis. In addition, inconsistent results were detected across meta-analyses regarding the effectiveness of multidisciplinary interventions. Finally, the degree of overlap between all reviews was moderate (CCA = 6%) and many included reviews reported most of the items of AMSTAR 2. Tai chi exercises, coping skills training, and the arthritis self-management program may be beneficial for enhancing arthritis self-efficacy. Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients' pain beliefs are the main obstacle to effective pain management. Assessing and correcting negative perceptions is important for improving pain intensity and quality of life of patients with cancer pain. AIMS To explore pain beliefs among oral cancer patients using the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation as a theoretical framework. The primary components of the model, cognitive representations, emotional representations, and coping responses, were examined. DESIGN A qualitative method was used. SETTINGS PARTICIPANTS/SUBJECTS: METHODS: Semi-structured, qualitative, in-depth interviews were conducted with patients newly diagnosed with oral cancer in a tertiary care hospital. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Interviews with 15 patients revealed that the pain beliefs of patients with oral cancer included three themes: pain cognitive representations of oral cancer, pain emotional representations of oral cancer, and pain coping responses. CONCLUSIONS Negative pain beliefs are common among oral cancer patients. This novel application of the self-regulatory model demonstrates that it can be used to capture the key pain beliefs (i.e., cognitions, emotions, and coping responses) of oral cancer patients within a single, unifying framework.

Abstract
Background This meta-analysis aimed at evaluating the efficacy of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) against osteoarthritis-associated symptoms in patients with knee/hip osteoarthritis. Methods Medline, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE databases were searched from inception to July 2022 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the efficacy of CBT with other treatment approaches in adults with confirmed knee/hip osteoarthritis. The pain intensity (primary outcome) and the secondary outcomes including insomnia severity, sleep efficiency, physical function as well as the severity of depression and fatigue were assessed at two time points (i.e., immediately after treatment and during the follow-up period). The effect size is expressed as standardized mean difference (SMD) with SMDs of < 0.2, 0.2-0.5, and 0.5-0.8, and > 0.8 representing negligible, small, medium, and large effect sizes, respectively. Results Fifteen RCTs were included for analysis. Immediately after CBT intervention, meta-analysis showed similar treatment effect in pain severity [SMD = -0.46, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.95 to 0.04, 11 studies, 1557 participants] and other symptoms including depression (SMD = -0.26, 95% CI: -0.58 to 0.06, five studies, 735 participants), fatigue (SMD = -2.44, 95% CI:-6.53 to 1.65, two RCTs, 511 participants), and physical function (SMD = -0.11, 95% CI:-0.25 to 0.02, five RCTs, 720 participants) between CBT and control groups, while there was an improvement in insomnia severity (SMD = -0.65, 95% CI: -1.06 to -0.24, four RCTs, 639 participants, medium treatment effect) and sleep efficiency (SMD = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.04 to 0.59, three RCTs, 352 patients, small treatment effect). During follow-up, CBT improved pain severity (SMD = -0.52, 95% CI: -1.03 to -0.01, eight studies, 1447 participants, medium treatment effect), insomnia (SMD = -0.43, 95% CI: -0.85 to -0.01, three RCTs, 571 participants, small treatment effect), and depression (SMD = -0.39, 95% CI: -0.59 to -0.18, four RCTs, 791 participants, small treatment effect). Nevertheless, sleep efficiency, fatigue, and physical function were not improved in the follow-up period. Conclusion Our results may suggest the durability of CBT-associated treatment benefits, supporting its role as a potential promising alternative or complementary intervention for patients with knee/hip osteoarthritis, especially against pain and insomnia. Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the relationship between pain and depressive symptoms through pain self-efficacy and pain catastrophizing in breast cancer patients with pain. DESIGN Secondary analysis of a randomized trial investigating a cognitive-behavioral pain management protocol. SAMPLE Females (N = 327) with stage I-III breast cancer and report of at least moderate pain. METHODS Pain severity, pain self-efficacy, pain catastrophizing, and depressive symptoms were measured. The proposed model was assessed using structural equation modeling. RESULTS Higher pain severity was significantly related to lower pain self-efficacy and higher pain catastrophizing. Lower pain self-efficacy and higher pain catastrophizing were significantly related to more depressive symptoms. Higher pain severity was significantly associated with more depressive symptoms through lower pain self-efficacy and higher pain catastrophizing. The association between pain severity and depressive symptoms was not significant when specified as a direct effect. CONCLUSION Pain severity related to depressive symptoms in breast cancer patients via pain self-efficacy and pain catastrophizing. IMPLICATIONS FOR PSYCHOSOCIAL PROVIDERS Measurement of pain self-efficacy and pain catastrophizing should be incorporated into comprehensive pain assessments for women with breast cancer, as these variables may be relevant therapeutic targets. Psychosocial symptom management interventions should include strategies that increase pain self-efficacy and decrease pain catastrophizing because these pain-related cognitive variables appear to drive the relationship between pain severity and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis is a debilitating chronic condition involving joint degeneration, impacting over 300 million people worldwide. This places a high social and economic burden on society. The knee is the most common joint impacted by osteoarthritis. A common cause of osteoarthritis is traumatic joint injury, specifically injury to the anterior cruciate ligament. The purpose of this review is to detail the non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for osteoarthritis with particular focus on individuals after anterior cruciate ligament injury. After reading this, health care providers will better comprehend the wide variety of factors linked to osteoarthritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objectives of this study are to ascertain the determinants of quality of life (QoL) and hand function among persons with hand osteoarthritis (OA) and to assess the influence of hand function on QoL among persons with OA. METHODOLOGY Two hundred and four participants in a clinical trial completed the baseline assessment. Demographic, socioeconomic, QoL (AqoL-4D), hand function (Functional Index for Hand Osteoarthritis, FIHOA), pain assessment, radiographic and clinical characteristics of participants were measured using standard methods. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate potential associations. RESULTS We studied 204 participants (76% female, age 65.63 ± 8.13 years, body mass index 28.7 ± 6.5 kg/m2 ) with hand OA. The mean pain score of the participants on a visual analog scale was 57.8 (SD ±13.6). There was a significant, negative moderate correlation between hand function and QoL scores except for the sense domain score. Global assessment, household income and serious illness were associated with QoL (P < .001) and explained 18% of the variance of the QoL. Pain scale, Patient Global Assessment, Mental Health Score, grip strength and cyst index were associated with hand function score and explained 26% of the variance of hand function. CONCLUSION The results indicate increasing impairment in hand function decreases the QoL of persons with hand OA. Some determinants were significantly associated with hand function and QoL. Determinants related to hand functions may be modifiable. In future, appropriate intervention strategies should be implemented, and further studies should be conducted to identify the effectiveness of those interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoarthritis (OA) pain is common and leads to functional impairment for many older adults. Physical activity can improve OA outcomes for older adults, but few are appropriately active. Behavioral interventions can reduce physical activity barriers. We developed and tested a brief, novel behavioral intervention (i.e., Engage-PA) for older adults combining values to enhance motivation and strategic activity pacing to improve arthritis-related pain and functioning and increase physical activity. METHODS A randomized feasibility and acceptability pilot trial compared Engage-PA to treatment-as-usual plus fitness tracker (TAU+) in N = 40 adults age 65+ with OA pain in the knee or hip. Engage-PA involved two 60-min telephone sessions. All participants wore a fitness tracker to collect daily steps throughout the study and completed baseline and post-treatment assessments of secondary outcomes (arthritis-related pain and physical functioning, physical activity, psychological distress, psychological flexibility, and valued living). The impact of COVID-19 on general well-being and physical activity was also assessed. Descriptive statistics were conducted for feasibility and acceptability outcomes. Indicators of improvement in secondary outcomes were examined via change scores from baseline to post-treatment and performing independent samples t-tests to assess for between-group differences. RESULTS Feasibility was high; 100% accrual, low (5%) attrition, and 100% completion of study sessions. Acceptability was high, with 89% finding the intervention "mostly" or "very" helpful. Engage-PA participants demonstrated improvements in arthritis pain severity (Mdiff = 1.68, p = 0.044, 95% CI [- 0.26, 3.62]) and self-reported activity (Mdiff = 0.875, p = 0.038, 95% CI [- 1.85, 0.98]) from baseline to post-treatment as compared to TAU+. Due to pandemic-related challenges, there was a high level of missing data (43%) for daily steps, but available data showed no significant change in steps over time or between the groups. COVID-19 added an additional burden to participants, such that 50% were exercising less, 68% were more sedentary, and 72% lost access to spaces and social support to be active. CONCLUSIONS Engage-PA is a promising brief, novel behavioral intervention with the potential to support older adults in improving arthritis-related pain and functioning and increasing physical activity. The feasibility and acceptability of Engage-PA are particularly notable as most participants reported COVID-19 added more barriers to physical activity. Knee Osteoarthritis Education Interventions in Published Trials Are Typically Unclear, Not Comprehensive Enough, and Lack Robust Development: Ancillary Analysis of a Systematic Review. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the content, development, and delivery of education interventions in clinical trials for people with knee osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN Ancillary analysis of a systematic review. LITERATURE SEARCH MEDLINE, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 2020. STUDY SELECTION CRITERIA Randomized controlled trials involving patient education for people with knee OA. DATA SYNTHESIS Content of education interventions was matched against a predefined topic list (n = 14) and categorized as accurate and clear, partially accurate/lacks clarity, or not reported. We examined whether education interventions included skill development or stated learning objectives and if they were developed based on theory, previous research, or codesign principles. Delivery methods and mode(s) were also identified. Data were summarized descriptively. RESULTS Thirty-eight education interventions (30 trials) were included. Interventions lacked comprehensiveness (median topics per intervention = 3/14, range = 0-11). Few topics were accurately and clearly described (10%, 13/136). Sixty-one percent (n = 23/38) of interventions targeted skill development, and 34% (n = 13/38) identified learning objectives. Forty-two percent (n = 16/38) were based on theory; 45% (n = 17/38) were based on research for chronic conditions, including 32% (n = 12/38) based on OA. Eleven percent of interventions (n = 4/38) were codesigned. Education was typically facilitated through face-to-face sessions (median = 9, range = 0-55), supplemented with telephone calls and/or written materials. CONCLUSION Education interventions for people with knee OA lacked comprehensiveness plus accurate and clear descriptions of topics covered.
