The Effect of Patient Safety Education on Undergraduate Nursing Students' Patient Safety Competencies

Trends in patient safety education research for healthcare professional students over the past two decades: a bibliometric and content analysis

Research and practice in patient safety education have garnered widespread attention; however, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis is lacking. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research focus and research trends in the globalization of the field of patient safety education and to describe the general characteristics of publications. Data on articles and reviews about student safety education were extracted from Web of Science. Microsoft Excel 2019, CiteSpace 6.1.R3, VOSviewer 1.6.18, SATI 3.2, Scimago Graphica, and Pajek were used for quantitative analysis. Collaboration networks of countries, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords were visualized based on publications from January 2000 to September 2022. A total of 573 papers were published between 2000 to 2022, showing an overall increasing trend. The USA, England, and Australia are the top three most prolific countries; Johns Hopkins University, the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Toronto are the top three most productive institutions; Nurse Education Today, Journal of Nursing Education, and BMC Medical Education are the most productive journals; Based on content analysis five research hotspots focused on: (1) Quality Improvement of Patient safety Teaching and Learning; (2) Patient safety Teaching Content; (3)Specialized Teaching in Patient Safety; (4) Integrating Patient Safety and Clinical Teaching; (5)Patient Safety Teaching Assessment Content. Through keyword clustering analysis, five research hotspots and relevant contents were identified. According to this study, simulation, communication, collaboration, and medication may attract more attention from researchers and educators, and could be the major trend for future study.

Determinants of clinical nurses' patient safety competence: a systematic review protocol

INTRODUCTION

Patient safety has become a fundamental element of healthcare quality. However, despite the ongoing efforts of various organisations, patient safety issues remain a problem in the healthcare system. Given the crucial role of nurses in the healthcare process, improving patient safety competence among clinical nurses is important. In order to promote patient safety competence, it is essential to identify and strengthen the relevant factors. This protocol is for a systematic review aiming to examine and categorise the factors influencing patient safety competence among clinical nurses.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

This review protocol is based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Methodology for Systematic Reviews of Effectiveness and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols. Four electronic databases, including Ovid-MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and EMBASE, will be used for the systematic review. After consulting with a medical librarian, we designed our search terms to include subject heading terms and related terms in the titles and abstracts. Databases from January 2012 to August 2023 will be searched.Two reviewers will independently conduct the search and extract data including the author(s), country, study design, sample size, clinical setting, clinical experience, tool used to measure patient safety competence and factors affecting patient safety competence. The quality of the included studies will be assessed using the JBI critical appraisal tool. Because heterogeneity of the results is anticipated, the data will be narratively synthesised and divided into two categories: individual and organisational factors.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethical review is not relevant to this study. The findings will be presented at professional conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

A Scoping Review Protocol to Map Knowledge and Attitudes about Patient Safety among Students in Healthcare Undergraduate Courses

Patient safety is a global challenge in healthcare, with adverse events representing a significant concern. The integration of patient safety education in undergraduate curricula is crucial in developing a culture of safety and safe practices among future professionals. However, there is a gap in research assessing the levels of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among undergraduate students in healthcare using validated instruments. This scoping review aims to map the levels of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among students in healthcare courses, allowing for national and international comparisons. The review will follow the methodological frameworks proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) for scoping reviews. The search will include published and unpublished studies in six databases, with no date or language restrictions. This scoping review was prospectively registered with the Open Science Framework on 17 July 2024. This scoping review will provide a comprehensive overview of knowledge and attitudes about patient safety among undergraduate students in healthcare, identifying gaps in patient safety education and areas for improvement in curricula. The results may guide teachers in creating teaching strategies to prepare future healthcare professionals, reducing knowledge gaps and improving the quality of care.

Effectiveness of a Patient Safety Incident Disclosure Education Program: A Quasi-Experimental Study

BACKGROUND

The accurate disclosure of patient safety incidents is necessary to minimize patient safety incidents and medical disputes. As prospective healthcare providers, nursing students need to possess the ability to disclose patient safety incidents.

PURPOSE

This study was designed to investigate the effect of a patient safety incident disclosure education program for undergraduate nursing students on participants' knowledge and perception of disclosure of these incidents, attitudes toward patient safety, and self-efficacy regarding disclosure of these incidents.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest design was conducted on fourth-year undergraduate nursing students recruited between September 6 and October 22, 2021, through convenience sampling from two universities in South Korea. The experimental group (n = 25) received the education program. The control group (n = 25) received educational materials on the disclosure of patient safety incidents only. Knowledge and perceptions of patient safety incident disclosure, attitudes toward patient safety, and self-efficacy regarding incident disclosure were measured. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t test, χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and ranked analysis of covariance.

RESULTS

Posttest results revealed knowledge (p < .001), perceptions (p = .031), and self-efficacy (p < .001) with regard to the disclosure of patient safety incidents were all significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Posttest attitudes toward patient safety were not significantly different between the two groups (p = .908).

CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The patient safety incident disclosure education program effectively enhances the knowledge, perception, and self-efficacy of nursing students with regard to safety incidents. The findings may be used to improve training and educational programs in nursing colleges and hospitals to improve the knowledge, perception, and self-efficacy of nursing students with regard to disclosing patient safety incidents in clinical settings.

Nursing students' perspectives on patients' safety competencies: a cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Nurses constitute the largest body of healthcare professionals globally, positioning them at the forefront of enhancing patient safety. Despite their crucial role, there is a notable gap in the literature regarding the comprehension and competency of nursing students in patient safety within Egypt. This gap underscores the urgent need for research to explore how nursing students perceive patient safety and the extent to which these competencies are integrated into their clinical and educational experiences. Understanding these perspectives is essential for developing targeted interventions that can significantly improve patient safety outcomes. The objective of this study was to fill this gap by assessing the perspectives of nursing intern students on patient safety competencies, thereby contributing to the global efforts in enhancing patient safety education and practice.

METHODS

In this research, a cross-sectional study design was employed to investigate the topic at hand. A purposive sample of 266 nursing intern students was enrolled from the Faculty of Nursing at Mansoura University. The data were collected using a patient safety survey. Subsequently, the collected data underwent analysis through the application of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques using SPSS-20 software.

RESULTS

Among the studied intern nursing students, we found that 55.3% and 59.4% of the involved students agreed that they could understand the concept of patient safety and the burden of medical errors. Regarding clinical safety issues, 51.1% and 54.9% of the participating students agreed that they felt confident in what they had learned about identifying patients correctly and avoiding surgical errors, respectively. Concerning error reporting issues, 40.2% and 37.2% of the involved students agreed that they were aware of error reports and enumerated the barriers to incident reporting, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the nursing student patient safety overview domain and their age (p = 0.025).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study's compelling data demonstrated that intern students who took part in the patient safety survey scored higher overall in all patient safety-related categories. However, problems with error reporting showed the lowest percentage. The intern students would benefit from additional educational and training workshops to increase their perspectives on patients' safety competencies.

The patient safety curriculum: An interventional study on the effectiveness of patient safety education for Jordanian nursing students

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the study was to assess the effectiveness of the World Health Organization's (WHO) patient safety curriculum (PSC) in improving the patient safety education for nursing students in Jordanian higher education programmes.

METHODS

An interventional design adopting a pre-test and post-test was used. A questionnaire survey was administered to 373 nursing students before and after the curriculum. Students were asked to complete pre-test and post-test questionnaires on self-awareness of patient safety.

RESULTS

Students had moderate knowledge of factors that influence patient safety and scored as the highest, (mean 3.45, SD 0.94). The greatest improvement was in the role of the health organisation in error reporting (the mean difference was 0.97, P = 0.001). Taking into consideration the essential measurements, the results obtained after the post-test regarding the two patient safety topics showed a significant increase after completing the training, demonstrating that the patient safety course was effective.

CONCLUSION

The study highlights the importance of developing a curriculum in nursing schools that incorporates patient safety education. The WHO PSC guide can be a great start in this domain.

Nurses' perceptions of patient safety competency: A cross-sectional study of relationships with occurrence and reporting of adverse events

Although, strengthening patient safety competencies in nursing has been emphasized for enhancing quality care and patient safety. However, little is known about the association of nurses' perceptions of patient safety competency with adverse nurse outcomes in Iranian hospitals. This study aimed to measure nurses' levels of patient safety competency in the hospitals of Iran and examines the relationship between patient safety competency with the occurrence and reporting of adverse events (AEs). This cross-sectional research was applied in eight teaching hospitals in Tehran, Iran, between August and December 2021. A sample of 511 nurses was randomly selected using the table of random numbers. The validated Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation questionnaire was used. Furthermore, two questions were used to measure the incidence and reporting of AEs. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and two binary logistic regression models through SPSS version 24.0. The mean patient safety competency score was 3.34 (SD = 0.74) out of 5.0; 41.5% of nurses rated their patient safety competency as less than 3. Among subscales, "skills of patient safety" scores were the highest, and "knowledge of patient safety" scores were the lowest. Nurses with higher Knowledge and Attitude scores were less likely to experience the occurrence of AEs (OR = 1.50 and OR = 0.58, respectively). Regarding AEs reporting, nurses with higher Skill and Attitude scores were 2.84 and 1.67 times, respectively, more likely to report AEs (OR = 2.84 and OR = 3.44, respectively). Our results provide evidence that enhancing PSC leads to reduced incidence of AEs and increased nurses' performance in reporting. Therefore, it is recommended that managers of hospitals should enhance the patient safety competency of nurses in incidents and reporting of patient safety adverse outcomes through quality expansion and training. Additionally, researchers should carry out further research to confirm the findings of the current study and identify interventions that would strengthen patient safety competencies and reduce the occurrence of AEs, and rise their reporting among nurses.

Identifying predictors of patient safety competency based on sleep quality in student faculty of nursing and midwifery during the internship period: a multidisciplinary study

BACKGROUND

Ensuring patient safety is of paramount importance in healthcare services. Sleep disorders not only have detrimental effects on the health of healthcare students but also significantly impair their performance, leading to an increased risk of medication errors. These errors can pose a grave threat to the safety and well-being of patients. It is crucial to address and mitigate sleep disorders among internship healthcare students to safeguard the quality of care and minimize potential patient harm.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the predictors of Patient Safety Competency (PSC) based on the sleep quality of internship healthcare students.

METHODS

A study was conducted on 331 students from the Ardabil School of Nursing and Midwifery at Ardabil University of Medical Sciences in northwest Iran from August to December 2022. The participants were selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic information form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey (H-PEPSS). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 22.0. Person correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between PSC level, its dimensions, and sleep quality, while multiple linear regression was conducted to identify the predictors of PSC.

RESULTS

The competency of nurses in patient safety was average in both classroom and clinical settings. However, their ability to work as a team with other healthcare professionals scored the lowest. In addition, the quality of sleep was found to be a predictor of patient safety competency among healthcare students during their internships.

CONCLUSIONS

It is important to note that healthcare students tend to have moderate patient safety competence (PSC), which is positively correlated with their sleep quality. Therefore, it is vital to identify the key factors that directly affect PSC. This would enable nursing and midwifery faculty administrators to take preventive measures to enhance patient safety competence in both classroom and clinical settings. Additionally, organizing educational workshops that engage students and improve their sleep quality could improve patient care. Practical courses are recommended for health professionals and students in clinical settings to enhance patient safety competencies. Additionally, student internships should receive hands-on training to improve teamwork and rest conditions.

Designing, implementing, and evaluating a mobile app-based cultural care training program to improve the cultural capacity and humility of nursing students

BACKGROUND

Given the growing cultural diversity among healthcare clients, it is crucial for nursing education to have a clear mission: to effectively train future nurses by incorporating cultural care curricula. The goal is to equip them with the necessary cultural capacity and humility. This study focused on designing, developing, and evaluating a mobile app-based cultural care training program, with the aim of enhancing the cultural capacity and humility of nursing students.

METHODS

This experimental study utilized the five steps of the ADDIE instructional model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) to design a mobile app-based cultural care training program. The first three steps involved designing and developing the program, drawing upon Purnell's model for cultural competence and Foronda's rainbow model of cultural humility. In the fourth step, the cultural care training program was implemented in 16 modules among 80 internship nursing students. These students were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control groups, with 40 students in each group. Finally, in the fifth step, the effectiveness of the mobile app-based program was evaluated by administering the Cultural Capacity Scale, and the Foronda Cultural Humility Scale before and one month after the cultural care training. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS22, employing techniques such as paired t-test, chi-square test, and independent samples t-test.

RESULTS

A total of 76 students completed the study, with 39 students in the intervention group and 37 students in the control group. Prior to the mobile app-based cultural care training program, there were no significant differences in cultural capacity and humility scores between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, following the completion of the program, the intervention group exhibited higher scores in cultural capacity and humility compared to the control group (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the mobile app-based cultural care training program had a positive impact on the cultural capacity and humility of undergraduate nursing students. These results indicate the importance of nurse educators designing comprehensive training programs that incorporate innovative approaches to enhance cultural capacity and humility among nursing students at all academic levels.

'Development and psychometric evaluation of the safety feeling scale in adult patients at hospital: Exploratory sequential mixed method'

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to develop and examine psychometric properties of the safety feeling scale (SFS) in adult patients to assess their sense of safety during a hospital stay.

DESIGN

Mixed methods design. A SQUIRE checklist was used.

METHODS

This is a study with two phases of scale development and evaluation of the psychometric properties of the scale. In the first phase, the concept of 'safety feeling' was analysed using a hybrid model. Thus, a systematic review and then a qualitative study with hospitalized patients (n = 31) were conducted by conventional content analysis. In the psychometric phase, factorial validity, reliability, feasibility, and responsiveness of the scale were evaluated by different tests in various samples.

RESULTS

After integrating the results of the systematic review and qualitative study, a scale item pool with 84 items was developed. In the psychometric phase, 12 items with four factors were specified; 'effective care,' 'confidence in the healthcare team,' 'emotional enrichment' and 'hygienic facilities,' explaining 51% of the total variance of the scale. They were confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Internal consistency and stability of the scale were satisfactory. Feasibility and responsiveness were also acceptable.

Senior nursing student's confidence in learnt competencies and perceptions of patient safety competency: a multisite cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

Nursing students' attainment of patient safety (PS) competency has always been a global concern among health and educational organisations. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine senior nursing students' confidence of their PS competencies, and associated predictive factors.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

Four faculties from the nursing faculties of East Azerbaijan province.

PARTICIPANTS

253 senior nursing students in Iran.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES

Using the modified version of the Health Professional Education Patient Safety Survey, data related to the level of confidence of nursing students in acquired competencies in seven sociocultural dimensions of PS in classroom learning and clinical settings were collected. In addition, the predictors of the patient's safety competencies were identified by linear regression statistics.

RESULTS

Mean scores of all dimensions of PS competencies both in the classroom and in clinical settings were higher than 3.11 (out of 5). The nursing students were most confident in their learning of 'understanding human and environmental factors' in the classroom and the clinical setting. Nursing students displayed the least confidence in learning 'work in teams with other health professionals' in both the classroom and the clinical settings. Type of university, prior experience with PS competencies education, and coverage of PS competency issues in the curriculum predicted the students' perceived competency scores in the classroom (R2=0.53, p<0.001). Also, perceived competence in the clinical settings was predicted by the variables of reporting errors to personnel and peers and the type of university (R2=0.65, p<0.001).

CONCLUSION

Study findings emphasise the role of learning environments and educational experiences of nursing students especially the clinical environment, clinical instructors and the hidden curriculum in improving safety competence. Nursing educators can use this information to revise and develop the undergraduate nursing curriculum, paying close attention to lesson plans and content in relation to teaching safety issues.

The need for a nursing specific patient safety definition, a viewpoint paper

Purpose

This viewpoint article discusses and analyses the need and benefits of a patient safety definition within the context of nursing.

Design/methodology/approach

This viewpoint article is supported by literature review, statutory documents and expert knowledge evidence. All these sources provided a unified narrative of the background, current aspects and future needs of patient safety.

Findings

The need for strengthening patient safety and the nurses' role within healthcare's actions towards patient safety are discussed. The predominant role of nurses due to the proportionate size and significant role along with the need for clarification of patient safety in nursing terms is recognised. Research evidence of nursing areas with safety issues and relevant nursing interventions are presented. Based on all findings, a research-based nursing specific patient safety definition is proposed. This definition includes three axes: what is patient harm, how this harm can be eliminated or reduced and which are the areas of nursing practice that are identified to provide opportunity for patient harm. These axes include nursing specifications of the patient safety definition.

Originality/value

It is the first time that a nurse specific patient safety definition is proposed. This definition strives to enhance nurse practitioners' understanding and engagement with patient safety by clarifying aspects of patient safety within everyday nursing practice.

The effect of community of practice in improving the role of clinical instructor in patient safety implementation by prelicensure nursing students

Introduction: Patient safety problems caused by students leads to different adverse event, hence clinical instructor plays a role in guiding them in the implementation of patient safety programs. Furthermore, the community of practice is considered to improve the role of clinical instructors in patient safety problems. This study is then conducted to measure the impact of community of practice toward the role of clinical instructors in patient safety problems. Design and methods: This is a pre-experimental design for one group and a pre-post test design without a control group. In addition, the sample includes 36 prelicensure nursing students. Result: The results showed that the score of clinical instructors’ role before and after intervention with community of practice implementation was 58 (34-67) and 79.33 with SD of 10,960, respectively, with a significant increase of 24.27. Also, the statistic analysis depicted that the role had a significant effect after implementation, with a p-value of < 0,000. Conclusions: Based on the results, the community of practice had a significant impact in increasing the role of clinical instructors in the implementation of patient safety problems by prelicensure nursing students.  

Patient safety and its relationship with specific self-efficacy, competence, and resilience among nursing students: A quantitative study

BACKGROUND

Patient safety is a relevant subject in the nursing curriculum. Each university programs patient safety teaching and practical training differently. However, few studies have sought to explore the relationship between patient safety as perceived by nursing students and other important psychosocial competencies in the nursing curriculum, such as self-efficacy, competence, and resilience.

OBJECTIVES

To analyze differential patient safety integration into three nursing education programs, and to assess agreement levels regarding patient safety climate, students' knowledge of patient safety and correlations with specific self-efficacy, competence and resilience.

METHODS

Participants were 647 undergraduate students from three universities. Patient safety climate and knowledge of patient safety (good praxis) were measured using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture for nursing students, and other psychosocial variables were also analyzed using other instruments: specific self-efficacy, perceived competence and resilience. Nursing education programs and patient safety climate were analyzed using the Rwg(j) and ICC measures of inter-rater agreement across different academic levels.

RESULTS

The ICC and Rwg indexes revealed high inter-rate agreement in all three universities. Differences were observed between Univ-2 and Univ-3 in patient safety climate scores and agreement values between academic levels. Differences in good praxis were found when academic levels were compared in Univ1-and Univ-2. Patient safety climate was found to correlate significantly with the psychosocial variables studied, but only in Univ-1.

CONCLUSIONS

Perceived patient safety climate differs between universities and academic levels. This competency is related to self-efficacy, competence and resilience, which endorses the assessment of patient safety integration from a broader perspective.

The relationship between patient safety culture and patient safety competency with adverse events: a multicenter cross-sectional study

Background

Patient safety culture and patient safety competency could be associated with adverse events (AEs). This study aimed to investigate the associations between nurses’ perceptions of patient safety culture, patient safety competency, and AEs.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was carried out among 338 nurses employed in three university hospitals in Qom, Iran between 17 August 2021 and 12 November 2021. Data were collected using three questionnaires: patient safety culture, patient safety competency, and AEs. Data were analyzed using SPSS-21 software. A multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the data.

Results

The results of this study showed that medication errors were significantly associated with “frequency of events reported” (OR = 0.706, P = 0.012), “supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety” (OR = 0.733, P = 0.048), and “management support for patient safety” (OR = 0.755, P = 0.012). Pressure ulcers were significantly associated with “supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety” (OR = 0.729, P = 0.039), “handoffs and transition” (OR = 0.707, P = 0.034), and “comfort speaking up about patient safety” (OR = 0.614, P = 0.016). Falls were significantly associated with “teamwork within units” (OR = 0.735, P = 0.031), “feedback and communication about error” (OR = 0.756, P = 0.046), and “handoffs and transition” (OR = 0.660, P = 0.012). The use of restraints for ≥8 hr. was significantly associated with “management support for patient safety” (OR = 0.701, P = 0.021).

Conclusions

According to the results of this study, AEs are associated with some dimensions of patient safety culture and patient safety competency. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and identify interventions to reduce the occurrence of AEs.

Instruments for measuring patient safety competencies in nursing: a scoping review

BACKGROUND

Patient safety competencies in nursing are essential for the quality of healthcare. To develop practices and collaboration in nursing care, valid instruments that measure competencies in patient safety are needed.

OBJECTIVE

To identify instruments that measure the patient safety competencies of nurses.

DESIGN

A scoping review.

DATA SOURCES

The Cochran Library, Epistemonikos, Eric, Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for articles reporting on instruments measuring patient safety competence in nursing. The search was limited to English peer-reviewed scientific papers published from January 2010 to April 2021.

REVIEW METHOD

A blinded selection of articles fulfilling the inclusion criteria was performed by two researchers based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Data were then extracted, synthesised and presented in tables and text.

RESULTS

Our search identified 1,426 papers, of which 32 met the inclusion criteria. The selected papers described nine instruments, of which the 'Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey' was the most used instrument. The identified instruments comprised domains for patient safety skills, attitudes, knowledge, communication, teamwork and errors. The instruments had been tested for content (face) and construct validity as well as for reliability. However, sensitivity and responsiveness were rarely assessed.

CONCLUSIONS

Over the last decade, there has been a growing body of instruments aimed at measuring patient safety competencies among nurses. The future development of new instruments should consider including the important dimension of ethics in patient safety as well as evaluating the instrument's responsiveness to be able to track changes over time.

The Turkish version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool: A validity and reliability study

AIM

To test the validity and reliability of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool in Turkish, which was developed to evaluate the patient safety competencies of nursing students.

BACKGROUND

In nursing education, it is crucial to provide students with the necessary professional knowledge and skills as well as appropriate attitudes in certain subjects. It is essential to address frequently encountered problems, to train nurses who can be aware of patient safety and improve the quality of nursing education. A valid and reliable measurement tool is needed to evaluate nursing students' current patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes and review the curriculum and learning objectives in this context.

DESIGN

This is a validation study with a cross-sectional design.

METHODS

The study sample consisted of 417 third and fourth-grade nursing students studying at two universities in Istanbul and volunteered to participate in the research. The study used the Turkish version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool was used for data collection. Content validity, construct validity, stability and reliability tests were performed. Data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS programs. Ethics committee approval and permission from the institutions were obtained.

RESULTS

Nursing students' mean age was 21.98 (SD = 1.17). The Scope Validity Index of the scale was calculated as 0.97. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis performed in the original structure consisting of three dimensions, 12 factors and 41 items, it was found that all items were in the sub-dimensions of the original scale and factor loads were between 0.168 and 0.918. Four models were tested in confirmatory factor analysis and Model 4 had the best-fit indices. They were calculated as: χ2/df = 2.38, RMSEA = 0.06 and CFI = 0.91 for Model 4. Cronbach's alpha value of the total scale was 0.941 and ranged between 0.642 and 0.932 in its sub-dimensions.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of the Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation Tool is valid and reliable to measure nursing students' patient safety competencies.

Development and Effectiveness of a Patient Safety Education Program for Inpatients

BACKGROUND

Patient safety is considered an important issue in the field of healthcare, and most advanced countries.

PURPOSE

This study was designed to evaluate a patient safety education program among hospitalized patients. Of the 69 participants, 33 completed the patient safety education program while the 36 remaining participants were given educational booklets. The program was used to measure knowledge about patient safety, patient safety perception, and willingness to participate in patient safety.

METHODS

Patient safety education was developed by the analysis-design-development-implementation-evaluation model considering expert advice, patient needs, and an extensive literature review. Data were collected from 20 July to 13 November 2020. Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical program. The effectiveness of the experimental and control groups before and after education was analyzed using paired t-tests, and the difference in the amount of increase in the measured variables for each group was analyzed using independent t-tests.

RESULTS

The experimental group had significantly higher patient safety scores (t = 2.52, p = 0.014) and patient safety perception (t = 2.09, p = 0.040) than those of the control group. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding the willingness to participate in patient safety.

CONCLUSION

The patient safety education program developed using mobile tablet PCs could be an effective tool to enhance patient involvement in preventing events that may threaten the safety of patients. Further studies are recommended to develop a variety of educational interventions to increase patient safety knowledge and perceptions of patients and caregivers.
