The association between physical activity and quality of life among people aged 60-89 living in own homes and nursing homes

BACKGROUND

The aim of the study was to obtain a response to the question of whether and how physical activity (PA) among people aged 60-89 years impacts quality of life and other sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age and place of living).

METHODS

Among 341 respondents aged 60 to 89, including 273 women (80%) and 68 men (20%) successfully completed IPAQ and WHOQOL AGE questionnaires. In the study were used International Physical Activity Questionnaire - IPAQ and World Health Organization Quality Of Life - Age - WHOQOL-AGE in Polish version.

RESULTS

The average total physical activity, including vigorous-intensity physical effort, moderate-intensity physical effort and walking amounts to 1381.87 ± 1978.60 MET-min/week. The average quality of life for the whole group of older people as evaluated with WHOQOL AGE scale was 64.79 (SD = 14.76; min:18.77-max: 98.07). Statistical analysis between physical activity and life quality proved significant dependence for the global life quality rating (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Our research has shown that PA improves quality of life among older people. Higher scores of quality of life were obtained in the F1 subscale (satisfaction) than in the F2 subscale (meeting expectations) in both age groups. Age significantly affects quality of life for older people.

Longitudinal health behaviour patterns among adults aged ≥50 years in China and their associations with trajectories of depressive symptoms

OBJECTIVES

Against the background of the growing recognition of the need for a holistic perspective on health behaviour, we aim to identify longitudinal patterns of multiple health behaviours, and to assess associations of such patterns with depressive symptoms among older people in China.

METHODS

Using three waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study data (n = 8439), we performed latent class growth analyses (LCGAs) to identify longitudinal patterns of multiple health behaviours. Random-effects models were estimated to assess associations between health behaviour patterns and depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

The best fitting LCGA model had seven classes: (1) connected active non-smokers (average posterior probability: 21.8%), (2) isolated active non-smokers (24.7%), (3) isolated inactive non-smokers (17.0%), (4) isolated active smokers (14.5%), (5) connected active smokers (12.2%), (6) increasingly connected and active non-smokers (5.4%), and (7) moderately connected inactive smokers (4.4%). Depressive symptoms were highest in the four classes with lower probabilities of social participation across waves. No evidence was found of change over time in depressive symptomatology gaps between people with different health behaviour trajectories.

CONCLUSION

Health behaviour patterns characterized by consistently low social participation were associated with raised depressive symptomatology, suggesting that focusing on social participation may benefit later-life mental health promotion strategies.

Holistic mHealth interventions for the promotion of healthy ageing: protocol for a systematic review

INTRODUCTION

Maintaining physical and mental health is essential for healthy ageing. It can be supported by modifying lifestyle factors such as physical activity and diet. Poor mental health, in turn, contributes to the opposing effect. The promotion of healthy ageing may therefore benefit from holistic interventions integrating physical activity, diet and mental health. These interventions can be scaled up to the population level by using mobile technologies. However, systematic evidence regarding the characteristics and effectiveness of such holistic mHealth interventions remains limited. This paper presents a protocol for a systematic review that aims to provide an overview of the current state of the evidence for holistic mHealth interventions, including their characteristics and effects on behavioural and health outcomes in general adult populations .

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

We will conduct a comprehensive search for randomised controlled trials and non-randomised studies of interventions published between January 2011 and April 2022 in MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Google Scholar (first 200 records). Eligible studies will be mHealth interventions targeting general adult populations with content on physical activity, diet and mental health. We will extract information on all relevant behavioural and health outcomes, as well as those related to intervention feasibility. Screening and data extraction processes will be carried out independently by two reviewers. Cochrane risk-of-bias tools will be used to assess risk of bias. We will provide a narrative overview of the findings from eligible studies. With sufficient data, a meta-analysis will be conducted.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethical approval is not required because this study is a systematic review based on published data. We intend to publish our findings in a peer-reviewed journal and present the study at international conferences.

"How are You Doing?" on the Healthy Aging of the Community-Dwelling Oldest-Old in the Shadow of the COVID-19 Pandemic

OBJECTIVE

Globally, the oldest-old population is growing rapidly. Little is known about the perceived well-being of the community-dwelling oldest-old, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the oldest-old's perceptions of aging well and the COVID-related impacts on them.

METHODS

Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 22 adults aged 85 or above were conducted with purposive sampling methods. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Four main themes emerged: 1) sustaining functional ability; 2) staying active with a positive attitude; 3) feeling grateful for support from society and family; 4) COVID-19-related anxieties and policies destabilizing their well-being.

DISCUSSION

This study provides direct evidence from the oldest-old on how they maintained their well-being. While they valued support from society and family, COVID-19-related measures disturbed their routines and prevented them from self-attaining well-being. The findings should be considered when developing interventions for this vulnerable group.

Promoting Healthy Behaviors in Older Adults to Optimize Health-Promoting Lifestyle: An Intervention Study

Introduction: Exercise intervention is the easiest and most effective way to promote human health. This study combined technology and exercise to improve the health behavior of the older adults through a physical activity intervention and to enhance a health-promoting lifestyle. Materials and methods: A quasi-experimental research method was used to openly recruit 120 healthy male and female older adults over 65 years old (average age of males: 71.6 ± 1.25 years; average age of females: 72.3 ± 1.28 years), all of whom wore smart bracelets. The participants were monitored by special personnel during the same period of walking every Monday to Friday. All participants recorded their daily steps, distance walked, and calorie consumption data for a period of 8 weeks. Results: After 8 weeks of walking, all participants showed a positive medium−high correlation of various factors between healthy behaviors and the health-promoting lifestyle scales. In the post-tests of each factor of two scales, males had the highest correlation between regular physical activity and physical activity, and females had the highest correlation between regular physical activity and social support. The variabilities in the explanatory power of the health behaviors of males and females on the health-promoting lifestyle were R2 = 70.9% (p < 0.01) and R2 = 74.1% (p < 0.01), indicating that the variables of healthy behaviors have a positive effect on health-promoting lifestyles in male and female older adults. Conclusions: Walking interventions positively affect the health behaviors of older adults and encourage health-promoting lifestyles. The value of this study is in its contribution to health promotion and public health recommendations for older adults.

Genetic, Social, and Lifestyle Drivers of Healthy Aging and Longevity

Purpose of Review

"Healthy aging" is the state of the aging process in which a person can maintain physical, social, mental, and spiritual wellness. This literature review presents an overview of recent studies that explore how biological, social, and environmental factors contribute to healthy aging.

Recent Findings

A number of genome-wide association studies have been conducted recently for traits related to healthy aging, such as frailty index, healthspan, muscle strength, and parental longevity, leading to the discovery of dozens of genetic variants associated with these traits. In parallel, associations between healthy aging measures and multiple non-biological environmental elements have been identified as key moderators of the aging process, indirectly influencing day-to-day homeostatic processes.

Summary

Individual variations in lifespan and healthspan are influenced by genetic factors, with a heritability of ~ 25% in developed countries. Non-genetic risk variance is explained in part by social, cultural, and lifestyle conditions. Altogether, these factors contribute to a multifaceted state of wellness over time, shaping individual risk to frailty and resilience during the aging process. Notably, "Blue Zone" populations, which are characterized by an abundance in healthy lifestyles across generations, share some commonalities regarding determinants of health.

Physical activity as a determinant of successful aging: a narrative review article

Population of older people in many countries is constantly growing, therefore the subject of successful aging has become important and a priority for public health policy-makers. A person who is successfully aging has low risk of chronic disease and disability, high physical function, good mental health and social engagement in older age. Lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise, have been identified as determinants of successful aging. The aim of this narrative review is to compile the evidence from big cohort studies on the overall health of older people. Their results indicate that regular physical activity increases the chances of successful aging in older people, but only after reaching a sufficient threshold. Physical activity lowers the risk of many chronic diseases and cognitive decline commonly associated with older age, promotes social engagement and improves self-estimated well-being.

Association between physical activity and falls among older adults in rural China: are there gender and age related differences?

Background

The relationship between physical activity (PA) and falls among older adults is inconsistent, and little is known about the gender-specific association between falls and PA. Moreover, age may modify this relationship. This study aimed to test the association between PA and falls and to investigate the gender and age differences in the association among rural older adults.

Methods

This cross-sectional data were derived from the baseline survey of Shandong Rural Elderly Health Cohort (SREHC). In total, 3,242 rural older adults aged 60 years and above were included in the analysis. PA was measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-S). PA levels were classified as low, moderate, elevated and high according to quartiles. Volume of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was categorized into low, moderate, elevated, and high level based on global recommendations. Information on falls was determined from in-person interviews. Falling was defined to participants as ending up on the floor or ground because they were unable to stop themselves. Logistic regression analysis was employed to explore the association between falls and PA.

Results

Of 3,242 rural older adults, the incidence of falls was 13.1%. In older adults, high levels of PA [odds ratio (OR) = 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.47–0.90] or MVPA (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.50–0.94) were related to falls. Moderate (OR = 4.84, 95% CI: 1.68–13.94) or high (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.30–0.99) levels of MVPA were associated with falls in older men. But elevated levels of PA were associated with falls (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.42–0.87) in older women. Among older people younger than 75 years, elevated (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37–0.79) or high (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.48–0.98) levels of PA were associated with falls.

Conclusions

Among Chinese rural older adults, PA and MVPA are associated with falls, and there are gender and age differences. To prevent falls, measures need to account for individuals’ gender and age to encourage rural older adults to participate more actively in PA. We will conduct longitudinal studies to clarify the causal relationship between PA and fall.

Regular Physical Activities and Related Factors among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in Jinan, China: A Cross-Sectional Study

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of regular physical activity (RPA) among middle-aged and older adults in urban communities in Jinan, China, and to identify the factors related to RPA. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among middle-aged and elderly urban residents. A total of 1406 participants were included in the final data analysis. The results of the four models consistently showed that the relevant factors of RPA were educational level, previously diagnosed hypertension (PDH) and depression. In terms of educational level, compared with illiteracy, from the first model to the fourth model, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of senior middle school were 2.072 (1.418, 3.026), 2.072 (1.418, 3.026), 1.905 (1.289, 2.816) and 1.926 (1.302, 2.848), respectively, and the ORs and 95% CIs of college or above were 2.364 (1.462, 3.823), 2.364 (1.462, 3.823), 2.001 (1.208, 3.312) and 2.054 (1.239, 3.405). In terms of PDH, compared with those with PDH, from the first model to the fourth model, ORs and 95% CIs of non-PDH were 1.259 (1.003, 1.580), 1.259 (1.003, 1.580), 1.263 (1.006, 1.585) and 1.261 (1.004, 1.584), respectively. For depression, compared with those without depression, also from the first model to the fourth model, ORs and 95% CIs of depression were 0.702 (0.517, 0.951), 0.702 (0.517, 0.951), 0.722 (0.532, 0.981) and 0.719 (0.529, 0.977), respectively. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that participation in RPA among middle-aged and older adults in Jinan urban communities was significantly associated with education level, PDH and depression.

Current status on the ability of the elderly in rural China: implications for future nursing and policy

Background

Aging is a global problem, and the ability assessment of the elderly plays an important role in the formulation of pension policies. It's necessary to evaluate the ability of the elderly in rural China to provide insights into future nursing care and policy making.

Methods

The elderly in 20 rural villages were selected by convenience sampling. We used "Elderly Ability Evaluation Form" issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China as survey tool. The characteristics and score differences of the elderly of different ability level were compared and analyzed. And logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the potential risk factors for disability in the elderly.

Results

A total of 2,878 elders were included, of which there were 1,916 elders with intact ability, 866 elders with mild disability, 42 elders with moderate disability, 54 elders with severe disability. The incidence of disability among respondents was 33.43%. There were significantly statistical differences in the dimensions of activities of daily living, mental state, perception and communication, and social participation among elders with intact ability, mild, moderate and severe disability (all P<0.05). The age, education level, marital status and living situations were all corrected to the scores on the activities of daily living, mental state, perception and communication, and social participation among elders (all P<0.05), and the elderly with age ≥75 years, illiteracy, unmarried and live alone had higher risk for disability (all P<0.05).

Conclusions

The current situation of the ability level of the elderly in rural China seems to be worrying, and it's necessary to establish a long-term nursing care system and aging policy to meet the needs of the elderly with regards to those potential influencing factors.

Physical performance and activity among older adults visiting primary healthcare centres in Riyadh

Objective

To assess physical performance (PP) and physical activity (PA) among older adults visiting primary healthcare centres (PHCCs) in Riyadh.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, men and women (n = 74) aged ≥60 years were recruited from five PHCCs across Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between 19 February and 6 August 2017. The Timed Up & Go test was used to assess PP. Self-reported PA was assessed using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly. Means and standard deviations were used to describe PP and PA scores across genders. A two-tailed independent samples t-test was used to estimate mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between genders.

Results

Men scored significantly lower than women on PP (MD: 2.11, 95% CI: 0.59 to 3.64) and PA (MD: −46.1, 95% CI: −80.96 to −11.25). Significant gender differences were observed for leisure time activities (MD: 17.35, 95% CI: 3.29 to 31.40), light household activities (MD: –10.86, 95% CI: –16.19 to –5.53) and heavy household activities (MD: –6.48, 95% CI: –11.73 to –1.23).

Conclusions

Men show significantly lower PP and PA than women. There are gender differences in leisure time activities and in light and heavy household activities.
