Dandy-Walker-Like Malformation in a Free-Ranging Atlantic Harbour Seal Pup (Phoca vitulina concolor)

An 88.5 cm long, 12.9 kg, 3-week-old stranded male Atlantic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina concolor) presented with cerebellar ataxia, delayed postural reactions, hyperaesthesia and nystagmus. The skull was enlarged and domed. Ultrasound through a persistent fontanelle in the frontal bone revealed hydrocephalus. Magnetic resonance imaging showed diffuse enlargement of the ventricular system, an absent cerebellar vermis, hypertrophy of the choroid plexus of the fourth ventricle and enlargement of the caudal fossa. Throughout rehabilitation, the seal failed to achieve milestones critical for successful release or placement in a managed care facility, including the ability to feed independently and haul out. Three months into rehabilitation it began to regurgitate and staff had difficulty administering food to the seal. The seal was euthanized due to a poor prognosis. Post-mortem examination confirmed a) aplasia of the dorsal cerebellar vermis and hypoplasia of the most dorsal portions of the right and left cerebellar hemispheres, b) severe, diffuse, congenital communicating hydrocephalus, and c) aplasia of the interthalamic adhesion and corpus callosum. This case represents the first report of Dandy-Walker-like malformation (DWLM) in a marine mammal and illustrates the importance of advanced imaging and thorough post-mortem examination in free-ranging pinnipeds that strand with evidence of neurological disease.

Dandy-Walker like malformation in a Fischer-344 rat

A spontaneous cerebellar malformation was found in a 32-day-old male Fischer 344 rat. The cerebellar malformation was composed of a vermis defect and markedly dilated fourth ventricle. The cerebellar hemispheres were separated, with the left hemisphere being smaller than the right one. Degenerative/inflammatory lesions consisting of macrophage/lymphocyte infiltration, spheroidal calcium depositions, and astrocytic gliosis were seen adjacent to the cerebral aqueduct. Abnormally arranged hyperplastic ependymal cells were observed beneath the fourth ventricle in the medulla oblongata. The gross findings of the present case resemble those of the human Dandy-Walker malformation. While a precise mechanism remains to be elucidated, degenerative/inflammatory lesions in the present rat may be involved in the pathogenesis of this malformation.

Abscess of bovine brain stem diagnosed by contrast MRI examinations

A 3-month-old, female Japanese Black calf that showed signs of neurological dysfunction soon after birth was twice examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Survey MR images showed changes in a hydrocephalus from mild to severe and the existence of a mass above the brain stem that could be distinguished from the surrounding cerebral parenchyma. Contrast MRI examinations using Gd-DO3A-butriol showed the mass to have a doughnut-like form. As the mass changed, the clinical signs aggravated. We diagnosed a brain stem abscess, which we confirmed pathologically. To our knowledge there are no other reports of the use of contrast MRI to examine cattle.

A congenital abnormality of calves, suggestive of a new type of arthropod-borne virus infection

About 1000 calves with a congenital disease were born in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, between October 1990 and October 1991, the peaks of the epidemic being in March and July 1991. Of 85 abnormal calves examined pathologically and serologically, 70 appeared to have been suffering from a viral disease. Of these 70 animals, 17 had lesions bearing some resemblance to those of the diseases produced by Akabane, Chuzan, Aino, bluetongue and bovine viral diarrhoea-mucosal disease viruses-diseases known to occur in Kagoshima-but serum samples contained no antibodies to these viruses or to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. This suggested the occurrence of a new type of viral infection in southern Japan. Six of the 17 calves were born dead and the others manifested clinical signs such as weakness, difficulty in sucking, inability to stand, vertigo, opisthotonus, staggering and weak eyesight or blindness. They were of small size and showed domed head, scoliosis, arthrogryposis, maxillary retraction, sunken eye, cataracts, and irregularities and defects of the teeth. At necropsy, almost all cases showed hydranencephaly, and many had cerebral defects and cerebellar hypoplasia or agenesis. Both cerebral and cerebellar lesions were seen in six cases, two of which showed a hypoplastic defect of the brain stem. Histopathological examination of the affected organs revealed gliosis, loss of cerebral parenchyma resulting from dilation of the ventricles, perivascular cuffing with round cells such as lymphocytes and plasma cells, proliferation of blood vessels, thick-walled blood vessels in the brain stem, dilation of mesencephalic aqueducts, cerebellar cortical dysplasia, decreased nerve cells in the ventral horn of the spinal cord, and myodysplasia of skeletal muscle.

What should you do if you observe a defective calf in a herd? Our suggestion is to seek qualified help to examine and diagnose the condition. Parentage should be verified by blood typing. But, most important, you can keep cattle genetically clean by having your clients report all defects in calves to their breed association and artificial insemination centers.
