COVID-19-Orthodontic Care During and After the Pandemic: A Narrative Review

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on orthodontic care in Finland

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the measures that were taken to limit the risk of COVID-19 contagion, how the risk of adverse effects on patient treatment outcomes was mitigated in orthodontic practices in Finland during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how these measures affected the course of orthodontic treatment.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In January 2021, an online questionnaire was sent by email to the members of the Orthodontic Division of the Finnish Dental Association Apollonia (n = 361). An additional inquiry was sent to the chief dental officers of 15 health centers.

RESULTS

A total of 99 clinically active members (39.8%) responded to the questionnaire. Of them, 97.0% had made changes in their practices, e.g. using additional protective gear such as visors (82.8%), incorporating preoperative mouthwashes (70.7%), and limiting the use of turbines (68.7%) and ultrasonics (47.5%). Two in three respondents reported temporary lockdowns (mean 1.9 months, range 0.3-5.0 months), during which some occlusions slightly regressed (30.2%) and some relapsed to a previous stage of treatment (9.5%). During this study, 59.6% of respondents reported that some treatments were still behind schedule. One in three respondents had used teleorthodontics because of the pandemic.

CONCLUSIONS

Preventive measures and changes in treatment procedures were implemented according to the local COVID-19 situation. Some treatments were prolonged, e.g. because of lockdowns or patient's fear of contracting COVID-19 whilst receiving treatment. New methods like teleorthodontics were introduced for coping with the increased workload.

Deep visual social distancing monitoring to combat COVID-19: A comprehensive survey

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing (SD) has played an essential role in controlling and slowing down the spread of the virus in smart cities. To ensure the respect of SD in public areas, visual SD monitoring (VSDM) provides promising opportunities by (i) controlling and analyzing the physical distance between pedestrians in real-time, (ii) detecting SD violations among the crowds, and (iii) tracking and reporting individuals violating SD norms. To the authors' best knowledge, this paper proposes the first comprehensive survey of VSDM frameworks and identifies their challenges and future perspectives. Typically, we review existing contributions by presenting the background of VSDM, describing evaluation metrics, and discussing SD datasets. Then, VSDM techniques are carefully reviewed after dividing them into two main categories: hand-crafted feature-based and deep-learning-based methods. A significant focus is paid to convolutional neural networks (CNN)-based methodologies as most of the frameworks have used either one-stage, two-stage, or multi-stage CNN models. A comparative study is also conducted to identify their pros and cons. Thereafter, a critical analysis is performed to highlight the issues and impediments that hold back the expansion of VSDM systems. Finally, future directions attracting significant research and development are derived.

COVID-19 risks and extra-protective measures practised among Nigerian orthodontists and orthodontic residents

Background and Aims

There is a high possibility of transmitting the coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) in the orthodontic clinic because orthodontists and their patients are in very close contact when orthodontic care is being given. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and perception of Nigerian orthodontists and orthodontic residents about the risks of COVID-19 as well as the extra-protective infection control measures that need to be taken.

Materials and Methods

This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The questionnaires were distributed and retrieved from consenting participants through an online platform. The questionnaires were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 23. The results were presented in tables and charts.

Results

Out of a total of 90 members on the association's WhatsApp group as at the time the study was being conducted, a total of 48 respondents participated in this study. There were more females (60.4%) than males. Majority (97.9%) of the respondents agreed/strongly agreed that an infected patient could infect the orthodontic clinic staff members with COVID-19 while most were of the view that debonding (95.8%) and retainer delivery (70.8%) posed a risk for spread of the virus. More than half of the respondents (52.1%) considered it necessary to change N95 masks after each patient as an extra-protective measure against COVID-19.

Conclusions

Majority of the respondents knew about the risks that COVID-19 posed to different aspects of orthodontic practice and were also knowledgeable about some of the extra-protective measures that they should take. There is a need to improve the knowledge of the participants concerning the use of appropriate mouth rinses to reduce the risks of transmission of COVID-19 in the dental/orthodontic clinic.
