A cross-regional comparison of Chinese bystanders' psychological experience of campus bullying

Breaking the cycle of bullying requires attention to the role of bystanders. We sought to identify the influencing factors associated with the psychological experience of junior high school students as bullying bystanders in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan according to data obtained from the Program for International Student Assessment 2018. The findings show that parental emotional support and the perception of school cooperation were the main factors that determined the psychological experience of bystanders in campus bullying in all four regions. In Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, but not in Mainland China, girls were more likely than were boys to be active bystanders who defended or supported bullied students when bullying occurred. Other factors that must be considered are also discussed according to the regions studied.

Longitudinal Relationships between Bullying and Moral Disengagement among Adolescents

Moral disengagement is a series of cognitive processes used to disengage moral standards to achieve absolved guilt and permit immoral conduct and has been found to be an important connection to bullying and aggressive behaviors among adolescents. This study examined the longitudinal relationship between moral disengagement and bullying behavior among a group of adolescents from fifth grade to ninth grade (n = 1180, mean age = 12.2, SD = 1.29, 46.5 % female, 80.2 % Caucasian/White, 7.1 % Black/African American, 5.4 % Latino/Hispanic, 2.4 % Asian American, and 1.7 % other) over three semesters. The objectives were to investigate (a) whether moral disengagement was a precursor to bullying behavior, vice versa, or whether the relationship was reciprocal and (b) whether gender and grade predicted moral disengagement and bullying behavior. The results showed that moral disengagement predicted bullying perpetration 6 months later. Also, older students and males utilized more moral disengagement than younger students and females and younger students and males engaged in greater bullying perpetration. Indirect paths linking gender and grade to bullying via moral disengagement at previous time points were identified and implications for bullying prevention are discussed. The findings underscore the importance of examining moral disengagement when studying bullying and across gender and development.

Why do early adolescents bully? Exploring the influence of prestige norms on social and psychological motives to bully

The present study examines psychological (e.g., Machiavellianism) and social (i.e., perceived popularity) motives for bullying, exploring the effects that classroom prestige norms for physical and relational aggression may have on these associations. A longitudinal multilevel study design was adopted, which included 978 5th to 7th graders from four Chilean schools. Participants were assessed three times over one year on self reports on bullying and Machiavellianism, and peer reports on popularity. Classroom prestige norms were calculated as the within classroom association between peer perceived coolness and aggression. Both Machiavellianism and perceived popularity were associated with bullying. However, hierarchical linear modeling analyses showed that Machiavellianism, but not perceived popularity, predicted bullying after controlling for baseline scores. Classroom prestige norms for relational aggression increased the association between Machiavellianism and bullying. Separate models were tested for boys and girls, showing no differences. Results are discussed in light of conceptual and methodological considerations.
