A Scoping Review of Digital-Based Intervention for Reducing Risk of Suicide Among Adults

Suicide is a serious public health problem, especially among adults. Risk factors for suicide include the presence of mental health disorders, history of previous suicide attempts; substance or alcohol use and lack of social support. The impact of suicide risk includes psychological loss, as well as the trauma and emotional stress that can be felt by the families and communities left behind. Digital interventions have emerged as a promising alternative for suicide risk prevention. Previous research has focused on the findings of various designs, which did not provide clear intervention information to inform the implementation of the intervention. This study aims to describe a digital intervention to reduce the risk of suicidal behavior in adults. The design used in this study was a scoping review. The authors conducted a literature search from the Scopus, PubMed, and CINAHL databases. Inclusion criteria in this study were articles discussing digital interventions aimed at preventing suicide risk in adult populations, English language, full-text, RCT or quasi-experiment design, and publication period of the last 10 years (2014-2024). The major keywords used in the article search were suicide prevention, digital intervention, and adults. Data extraction used manual table and data analysis used descriptive qualitative with a content approach. The results showed that there were 9 articles that discussed digital-based interventions to reduce suicide risk in adults. The various types of digital interventions used were smartphone apps, online learning modules, and game-based interventions. These interventions offer significant potential in reducing the risk of suicidal behavior in adults. Digital interventions have an important role in reducing the risk of suicidal behavior in adults by considering aspects of suitability to individual needs and understanding digital literacy. Then, the development of mental health services and public health policies presented needs to be done with collaboration between stakeholders in suicide prevention efforts.

Workplace Violence and Bullying Faced by Health Care Personnel at the Emergency Department of a Tertiary Care Hospital of Karachi, Pakistan: A Cross-Sectional Study

INTRODUCTION

The emergency department is the most affected by physical and verbal abuse and bullying in health care. Violence against health care workers not only affects their safety, but also their performance and motivation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated determinants of violence against health care personnel.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study design was used with 182 health care personnel at the emergency department tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan. Data were collected through a questionnaire comprised of 2 sections: (1) demographic questions and (2) statements to identify the prevalence of workplace violence and bullying among health care personnel. Nonprobability purposive sampling was used for recruitment. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the prevalence and determinants of violence and bullying.

RESULTS

Most participants were younger than 40 years of age (n = 106, 58.2%). Participants were mainly nurses (n = 105, 57.7%) and physicians (n = 31, 17.0%). Participants reported experiencing sexual abuse (n = 5, 2.7%), physical violence (n = 30, 16.50%), verbal abuse (n = 107, 58.8%), and bullying (n = 49, 26.9%). The odds of experiencing physical violence were 3.7 times greater (confidence interval = 1.6-9.2) when there was not a procedure for reporting workplace violence compared to when there was a procedure.

DISCUSSION

Attention is required to identify the prevalence of workplace violence. Creating effective policies and procedures for a reporting system would potentially lead to lowering violence rates and positively impacting health care workers' well-being.

Predictors of events of violence or aggression against nurses in the workplace: A scoping review

AIM

To identify predictors and consequences of violence or aggression events against nurses and nursing students in different work contexts.

BACKGROUND

Workplace violence against nurses and nursing students is a very common and widespread phenomenon. Actions to manage or prevent violent events could be implemented knowing the risk factors and consequences. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews that summarize knowledge on the predictors and consequences of workplace violence.

EVALUATION

A scoping review was conducted using electronic databases including APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane, Ovid Medline, PubMed and Scopus.

KEY ISSUES

After full text analysis, 87 papers were included in the current scoping review. Risk factors of horizontal violence were grouped into 'personal' and 'Environmental and organizational', and for violence perpetrated by patients into 'personal', 'Environmental and organizational' and 'Characteristics of the perpetrators'.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this scoping review uncover problems that often remain unaddressed, especially where these episodes are very frequent. Workplace violence prevention and management programmes are essential to counter it.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

The predictors and the consequents identified constitute the body of knowledge necessary for nurse managers to develop and implement policy and system actions to effectively manage or prevent violent events.
