Role differentiated bimanual manipulation during a lab-based free play task

Infants spend a significant portion of their day engaging in play and accumulate immense amounts of object interactions. As infants develop, they perform increasingly complex bimanual actions, such as role differentiated bimanual manipulation (RDBM), where each hand serves a distinct role. RDBM has been well documented in structured lab settings, but these studies restrict the types of toys and postures in which infants can engage. Therefore, previous studies are limited in that they do not simulate everyday infant object interactions. Infants (39 13- and 39 24-month-olds) engaged in a 20-minute lab-based free play task designed to mimic everyday object interactions in order to assess the prevalence of RDBM and to understand the influence of posture, toy size, and toy weight on RDBM. Although both age groups frequently engaged in object interaction, RDBM did not occur as often in the lab-based free play task as found previously in structured settings. Whereas infants engaged in RDBM with toys of various sizes and weights, they favored lightweight toys and preferred to sit while engaging in RDBM. The 13-month-old infants preferred small toys while the 24-month-olds more often incorporated medium and large toys in their interactions. Examining RDBM using a lab-based free play task furthers our understanding of how complex bimanual behaviors emerge in a naturalistic setting where infants can adopt a wide range of postures and interact with a variety of toys.

How babies use their hands to learn about objects: Exploration, reach-to-grasp, manipulation, and tool use

Object play is essential for infant learning, and infants spend most of their day with objects. Young infants learn about objects and their properties through multimodal exploration facilitated by caregivers. They figure out how to transport their hands to where objects are, and how to grasp objects in increasingly complex ways. Building on earlier experiences, they learn how to use their hands collaboratively to act on objects, and how to use objects to act on other objects in instrumental ways. These changes in how infants use their hands occur during the most rapid period of motor development and may have important downstream implications for other domains. Recent research findings have established the importance of effective fine motor skills for later academic skills, yet our understanding of the factors that influence the early development of hand skills is sparse at best. Latest research on reaching, grasping, object manipulation, hands collaboration, and tool use is reviewed and connections among these developments are explained from the perspective of developmental cascades. Lateralized behaviors in living humans: Application in the context of hominin brain evolution

The left and right hemispheres of our brains differ subtly in structure, and each is dominant in processing specific cognitive tasks. Our species has a unique system of distributing behavior and cognition between each cerebral hemisphere, with a preponderance of pronounced side biases and lateralized functions. This hemisphere-dependent relationship between cognitive, sensory or motor function and a set of brain structures is called hemispheric specialization. Hemispheric specialization has led to the emergence of model systems to link anatomical asymmetries to brain function and behavior. Scientific research on hemispheric specialization and lateralized functions in living humans focuses on three major domains: (1) hand preferences, (2) language, and (3) visuospatial skills and attention. In this chapter we present an overview of this research with a specific focus on living humans and the applications of this research in the context of hominin brain evolution. Our objective is to put into perspective what we know about brain-behavior relationships in living humans and how we can apply the same methods to investigate this relationship in fossil hominin species, and thus improve our understanding of the emergence and development of complex cognitive abilities.

Activation-Inhibition Coordination in Neuron, Brain, and Behavior Sequencing/Organization: Implications for Laterality and Lateralization

Activation-inhibition coordination is considered a dynamic process that functions as a common mechanism in the synchronization and functioning of neurons, brain, behavior, and their sequencing/organization, including over these different scales. The concept has broad applicability, for example, in applications to maladaptivity/atypicality. Young developed the hypothesis to help explain the efficacy of right-hand reaching to grasp in 1-month-olds, a study that implicated that the left hemisphere is specialized for activation-inhibition coordination. This underlying left-hemisphere function, noted to characterize the left hemisphere right from birth, can explain equally its language and fine motor skills, for example. The right hemisphere appears specialized for less complex inhibitory skills, such as outright damping/inhibition. The hypotheses related to inhibition and hemispheric specialization that appear in the literature typically refer to right hemisphere skills in these regards. The research to present also refers to excitation/inhibition balance/ratio in synaptic function, but not to coordination in the sense described here. Furthermore, it refers to the inhibitory function widely in neuronal networks. The paper presents a comprehensive literature review, framing the research in terms of the proposed concept. Further, the paper presents a broad model of activation-inhibition coordination that can help better understand neuron, brain, and behavior, generally, and left hemisphere specialization, specifically.
