Abstract
Hedgehogs, as exotic species, are more susceptible to various neoplastic conditions affecting diverse bodily systems, particularly the tegumentary, hemolymphatic, and digestive systems. Among these conditions, epithelial tumors are the most prevalent, followed by round cell tumors and mesenchymal tumors. A striking characteristic is the malignant nature of over 8% of these tumors, leading to a generally unfavorable prognosis. This study aims to present a unique case involving a 2.5 year-old male African pygmy hedgehog in Concepción, Biobío District, Chile, diagnosed with a mesenchymal neoplasia originating from mesothelial cells. The hedgehog presented to the veterinary clinic with acute abdominal pain, prompting ultrasound imaging, and comprehensive cytological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical analyses. During abdominal ultrasound, a mass was observed, and its cytological examination revealed the presence of malignant cells. The histopathological examination unveiled a diffuse mesothelial cell tissue interwoven with abundant fibrous tissue and small cysts containing serous fluid, all enveloped by flattened or cuboidal cells of mesothelial origin. Immunohistochemistry further confirmed the diagnosis, demonstrating positive immunostaining for calretinin and mesothelin markers, corroborating the diagnosis of fibrous malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. This case highlights the complexity of neoplastic conditions in hedgehogs and emphasizes the importance of multimodal diagnostic approaches for accurate identification and understanding of these rare diseases.

Abstract
A 25-year-old female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) reared in an aquarium died following a history of anorexia, lethargy, abnormal protrusion of the skin, and oral respiration. At necropsy, multiple yellowish-white nodules with diameters of 0.1-0.5 cm were disseminated in the thoracic cavity and lungs. Histopathologically, the nodules were continuous with normal mesothelium and were characterized by the proliferation of spindle-shaped to polygonal neoplastic cells with prominent atypia. The neoplastic cells exhibited diffuse, strong staining for vimentin and partial, weak to moderate staining for cytokeratin AE1/AE3. Based on these findings, the lesions were diagnosed as pleural mesothelioma. This study reports the first case of pleural mesothelioma in California sea lion.

Abstract
Mesothelioma is an uncommon cancer in dogs for which there is no established standard of care. Chemotherapy is often suggested despite no definitive proof of efficacy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of chemotherapy on survival of dogs with mesothelioma. A retrospective multicentric study was carried out. To be included, dogs needed to present an evocative clinical evolution and a morphological diagnosis of mesothelioma. Exclusion of other cause of effusion and complete clinical follow-up were also required. Fourty dogs were included, 27 received chemotherapy (group 1) and 13 did not (group 2). Groups were heterogeneous regarding the proportion of animals undergoing surgery as part of their treatment (16 in group 1, 2 in group 2; p = .016) and homogeneous otherwise. Univariate analysis showed that dogs from group 1 survived significantly longer than dogs from group 2 (MST: 366 vs. 74 days; p < .001). Complete resolution of effusion after the first chemotherapy administration positively correlated with survival in group 1 (MST: 415 vs. 160 days; p < .01). All other variable tested had no significant impact on survival in univariate analysis, but dogs undergoing surgery and dogs having serous membranes' modification at medical imaging tended to survive longer. Multivariate analysis confirmed that chemotherapy was the sole variable independently associated with survival in our study (odds ratio 5.57-6.12; p < .01).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a rare clinical syndrome characterised by fibrosis and thickening of the peritoneum with massive adhesions of the abdominal organs. In humans, abdominal tumours, such as pancreatic adenocarcinoma, can be underlying diseases of SEP. This report describes a case of SEP in a dog with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION An 11-year-old male neutered French Bulldog presented with chronic vomiting. Ultrasonography revealed a mass in the centre of the abdomen. A small amount of ascites, interpreted as modified transudate, was present in the abdominal cavity. Computed tomography (CT) revealed peritoneal effusion with a thickened peritonium. Laparoscopy revealed a large nodular lesion occupying the central portion of the abdomen, continuous with the falciform ligament. Histological examination of the biopsy specimens of the mass, abdominal wall, and gastric peritoneum revealed marked fibroplasia with mild lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates. Based on these results, a tentative diagnosis of early stage sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) was made. Prednisolone and tamoxifen were administered with the expectation of ameliorating SEP, however, the dog died 61 days post diagnosis. At autopsy, the intestinal loop and mesentery were encased in the fibrous membrane, which is a typical finding in SEP. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the samples obtained at autopsy supported the diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with peritoneal dissemination and distant metastasis with desmoplasia. The unexpectedly hardened skin, where previously laparoscopic ports were inserted, histologically contained the same carcinoma cells with desmoplasia. CONCLUSIONS To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of canine SEP with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma that also caused metastasis to port insertion sites as well as distant organs.

Abstract
Mesothelioma has been reported frequently in large felids. These neoplasms present a diagnostic challenge given their highly variable morphology that mimics carcinomas or sarcomas at different locations. Our goal was to characterize mesotheliomas morphologically and immunohistochemically to determine if a panel of antibodies could be used to more accurately support the diagnosis of these neoplasms in large felids. Mesotheliomas from 6 large felids, including 4 clouded leopards, 1 Bengal tiger, and 1 cheetah, were immunohistochemically labeled for vimentin, E-cadherin, pancytokeratin, Wilms tumor 1 (WT1), MUC-1, and calretinin. The mesotheliomas of the 4 clouded leopards and the tiger were of the epithelial subtype; the mesothelioma from the cheetah was biphasic. All 6 mesotheliomas had strong immunohistochemical labeling for vimentin, E-cadherin, and pancytokeratin. All cases had cytoplasmic labeling for WT1, and 2 also had nuclear labeling. The 3 mesotheliomas with distinct papillary fronds were weakly positive for MUC-1. These and one other epithelial mesothelioma were also positive for calretinin. Our study demonstrates that the morphologic and immunohistochemical phenotypes of mesothelioma that have been identified in humans and domestic species can occur in large felids, and a panel of pancytokeratin, vimentin, WT1, and calretinin can be utilized to support the diagnosis of these neoplasms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immunocytochemistry (ICC) is utilized as an advanced technique in veterinary cytology. In tumor diagnosis, cytokeratin and vimentin are markers used to distinguish the origin of tumor cells. Standard enzyme-based ICC has limitations in clinical use; and therefore, more convenient and reliable methods are needed. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid multiple immunofluorescent (RMIF) detection method for dual cytokeratin and vimentin staining on cytology slides in dogs. METHODS Air-dried smear samples from solid tumors and sediments of pleural effusions were prepared from dogs (n = 14) that were admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Kagoshima University, Japan. Mouse monoclonal anti-human cytokeratin (AE1/AE3) and rabbit monoclonal anti-human vimentin (SP20) antibodies were used as primary antibodies, followed by staining with Alexa Fluor-conjugated secondary antibodies. Staining using the RMIF method was compared with enzyme-based ICC staining. RESULTS Rapid multiple immunofluorescent immunostaining was clear and specific in the evaluated smears, whereas the enzyme-based ICC showed nonspecific signals. By using the RMIF staining method, epithelial cells, mesenchymal cells, and mesothelial cells could be classified on a single smear of a pleural effusion. In smears of lymph nodes with epithelial tumor metastases, the RMIF method successfully detected metastatic epithelial tumor cells. CONCLUSIONS The RMIF method might be a useful tool for diagnostic cytology in veterinary medicine.

Abstract
A 7-year-old Dachshund was clinically examined because of a 10-day history of lameness in the left hind limb. On the basis of radiological and cytological findings, an osteosarcoma of the left acetabular region was suspected. The dog underwent a hemipelvectomy and osteosarcoma was diagnosed by subsequent histopathological examination. An immovable subcutaneous mass was noted on the left chest wall during the physical examination and non-septic neutrophilic inflammation was diagnosed by cytology. Forty days later, the dog showed signs of respiratory distress with an in-diameter increase of the subcutaneous mass up to 4 cm. Thoracic radiography and ultrasonography revealed pleural effusion and a lytic process in the fourth left rib. Furthermore, ultrasound examination revealed a mixed echogenic mobile structure with a diameter of around 2 cm floating within the pleural fluid of the left hemithorax close to the pericardium. The dog underwent surgery for an en bloc resection of the subcutaneous mass together with the fourth rib and the parietal pleura. Moreover, the left altered lung lobe, corresponding to the mobile structure detected by ultrasound, was removed. Based on cytological, histopathological, and immunohistochemical examinations, an invasive epithelioid pleural malignant mesothelioma was diagnosed.

Abstract
Cytomorphometry made on cytological slides is the quantitative method of precise analysis of cellular structures, including both cytoplasm and nucleus. The aim of this study was to describe cytomorphometric parameters of mesothelial cells in the course of benign reactive and malignant proliferation and to compare them to carcinomas and adenocarcinomas located within serosal cavities in dogs. The second aim was to evaluate applicability of cytomorphometry to diagnostics of diseases causing accumulation of effusion in serosal cavities. Cytological samples of normal and non-malignant mesothelium, mesothelioma and various carcinomas were collected from dogs. Cytomorphometry was made on the smears stained with Giemsa solution. Mean nuclear and cellular perimeter, mean nuclear and cellular area, mean nuclear and cellular diameter, and mean nuclear and cellular roundness were determined. Moreover, nuclear to cytoplasmic ratio (N/C) was calculated. The data revealed statistically significant differences for all parameters, excluding mean nuclear perimeter, between compared groups. Normal mesothelium cells and their nuclei were significantly smaller and more elongated than cells and nuclei of both benign reactive and malignant neoplastic mesothelium. Only a few differences were observed between benign reactive mesothelium cells and mesothelioma cells - mean nuclear area and mean nuclear diameter of benign reactive mesothelium cells were significantly larger and N/C ratio was higher in comparison to mesothelioma cells. Even though some significant differences were observed, considerable overlap of these cytomorphometric parameters in animals with different diseases limited practical role of these observations. Cytomorphometric analysis of cellular samples collected from dogs with proliferative processes affecting serosal cavities can be only an auxiliary method increasing accuracy of preoperative diagnosis.

Abstract
Abstract
The presence of tumor within the serosal cavities, often connected with accumulation of serosal effusion, is a quite common problem in the small animal veterinary medicine. The first step in diagnosis of such cases is cytopathological examination. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of cytology and immunocytochemistry, using commercially available antibodies (anti-cytokeratin, anti-vimentin, and anti-desmin), in differential diagnosis of malignant tumors located within serosal cavities in dogs. The final cytological diagnosis of carcinoma/adenocarcinoma, sarcoma, and mesothelioma was obtained on the basis of routine cytopathology and immunocytochemistry, and then confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Cytoplasmic immunoreactivitiy of normal mesothelid cells and cytoplasmic immunoreactivity of hyperplastic mesothelial cells revealed constant and strong expression of all examined intermediate filaments: cytokeratin, vimentin and desmin. Application of routine cytopathology and immunocytochemistry allowed 32 neoplastic tumors to be detected: 19 cases of carcinomas/adenocarcinomas, 6 cases of sarcomas, 7 cases of mesotheliomas. Immunostaining of cytopathological samples with chosen set of antibodies: anti-cytokeratin, anti-vimentin, anti-desmin is a useful, and low invasive test for differentiation between mesotheliomas and carcinomas/adenocarcinomas in dogs.
