Abstract
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) represents a significant global health challenge, ranking as the third leading cause of cardiovascular-related mortality. VTE pervades diverse clinical specialties, posing substantial risks to patient well-being and imposing considerable economic strains on health care systems. While platelets have long been recognized as pivotal players in hemostasis, emerging evidence underscores their multifaceted immune functions and their capacity to engage in crosstalk with other immune cells, such as neutrophils, thereby fostering immune-related thrombosis. Notably, investigations have elucidated the pivotal role of platelets in the pathogenesis of VTE. This review provides a comprehensive overview of platelet physiology, encompassing their activation, secretion dynamics, and implications in VTE. Moreover, it delineates the impact of platelet interactions with various immune cells on the initiation and progression of VTE, explores the correlation between platelet-related laboratory markers and VTE, and elucidates the role of platelets in thrombosis regression.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to analyze the independent risk factors contributing to preoperative DVT in TKA and constructed a predictive nomogram to accurately evaluate its occurrence based on these factors. METHODS The study encompassed 496 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty at our hospital between June 2022 and June 2023. The dataset was randomly divided into a training set (n = 348) and a validation set (n = 148) in a 7:3 ratio. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to screen the predictors of preoperative DVT occurrence in TKA and construct a nomogram. The performance of the predictive models was evaluated using the concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Decision curve analysis was used to analyze the clinical applicability of nomogram. RESULTS A total of 496 patients who underwent TKA were included in this study, of which 28 patients were examined for lower extremity DVT preoperatively. Platelet crit, Platelet distribution width, Procalcitonin, prothrombin time, and D-dimer were predictors of preoperative occurrence of lower extremity DVT in the nomograms of the TKA patients. In addition, the areas under the curve of the ROC of the training and validation sets were 0.935 (95%CI: 0.880-0.990) and 0.854 (95%CI: 0.697-1.000), and the C-indices of the two sets were 0.919 (95%CI: 0.860-0.978) and 0.900 (95%CI: 0.791-1.009). The nomogram demonstrated precise risk prediction of preoperative DVT occurrence in TKA as confirmed by the calibration curve and decision curve analysis. CONCLUSIONS This Nomogram demonstrates great differentiation, calibration and clinical validity. By assessing individual risk, clinicians can promptly detect the onset of DVT, facilitating additional life monitoring and necessary medical interventions to prevent the progression of DVT effectively.

Abstract
The amount of smoking, level of smoking addiction and smoking cessation have effects on blood cells, blood lipid levels, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV)/lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) and monocyte/high- density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio (MHR). Methods In this self-controlled experimental study, we included individuals who applied to a smoking cessation clinic and quit smoking. Their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the amount of cigarettes consumed (pack/year), their Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND) results, haemogram values before and 6 months after quitting smoking, NLR, PLR, MPVLR, MHR and blood lipid levels before and after the treatment were compared retrospectively. Results The mean (SD) age of the 239 individuals who participated in the study was 41.7 (10.9) years and 55.2% of them were women. Their mean FTND score was 7.06 (2.0), and most of them (47.7%) had a very high level of addiction. After the smoking cessation treatment, their neutrophil, platelet, MPV, red cell distribution width, platelet distribution width (PDW), cholesterol, triglyceride, low- density lipoprotein, NLR, PLR, MPVLR, MHR and HDL values increased (p<0.05). The amount of smoking and level of dependence were negatively correlated with HDL, and positively correlated with other parameters. Conclusion After smoking cessation, in addition to dyslipidaemia, the NLR, PLR, MPVLR and MHR values also decreased, and the difference was found to correlate with the level of addiction and the amount of smoking.

Abstract
The combination of inflammation and thrombosis is a hallmark of many cardiovascular diseases. Under such conditions, platelets are recruited to an area of inflammation by forming platelet-leukocyte aggregates via interaction of PSGL-1 on leukocytes and P-selectin on activated platelets, which can bind to the endothelium. While particulate drug carriers have been utilized to passively redirect leukocytes from areas of inflammation, the downstream impact of these carriers on platelet accumulation in thromboinflammatory conditions has yet to be studied. Here, we explore the ability of polymeric particles to divert platelets away from inflamed blood vessels both in vitro and in vivo. We find that untargeted and targeted micron-sized polymeric particles can successfully reduce platelet adhesion to an inflamed endothelial monolayer in vitro in blood flow systems and in vivo in a lipopolysaccharide-induced, systemic inflammation murine model. Our data represent initial work in developing cargo-free, anti-platelet therapeutics specifically for conditions of thromboinflammation.

Abstract
To investigate the association between platelet (PLT) indices and preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in elderly patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). A total of 1391 patients were enrolled. We created receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve using the ratio of PLT indices to DVT before TJA, divided the enrolled patients into groups based on the cut-off value, and then analyzed risk factors for DVT before TJA in the multivariate binary logistic regression analysis. Preoperative DVT occurred in 103 cases. Based on the ROC curve, we determined that the cut-off values for PLT, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), platelet large cell ratio (P-LCR), and plateletcrit (PCT) were 202 × 109/L, 11.4 fL, 13.2 fL, 34.6%, and 0.228%. And the areas under the curve were 0.606, 0.605, 0.617, 0.616, and 0.598. Multivariate binary regression analysis revealed that the risk of preoperative DVT in TJA patients with PLT≥202 × 109/L, MPV≤11.4 fL, PDW≤13.2 fL, P-LCR≤34.6%, and PCT≥0.228% increased by 2.32 (P < .001, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.50-3.60]), 1.86 (P < .001, 95% CI [1.22-2.83]), 2.17 (P < .001, 95% CI [1.43-3.31]), 2.27 (P < .001, 95% CI [1.50-3.45]), and 1.76 times (P = .013, 95% CI [1.13-2.76]), respectively. Age, P < .001, odds ratio (OR) = 1.08, 95% CI [1.04-1.11]; corticosteroid use, P = .011, OR = 3.66, 95% CI [1.34-9.96]. We found that increased PLT count and PCT, decreased MPV, PDW, and P-LCR, old age, and corticosteroid use were independent risk factors for preoperative DVT in elderly TJA patients.

Abstract
Splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) is a rare and lethal form of venous thrombosis. The role of platelet indices (PI's) is not well studied in SVT. The present study was aimed to assess if the PI's have a significant association with SVT. This was a prospective case control study from coagulation laboratory of Hematology department. A total 100 cases of SVT and 80 controls were screened for PI's (MPV, PCT & PDW) and platelet count (PC) along with routine thrombophilic risk factors. The SVT cases were divided into 3 subgroups, that comprised of EHPVO/ PVT (n = 69), BCS (n = 27), and MVT (n = 4). The mean PC and PCT were significantly lower in patients than the controls. The PDW was significantly higher in cases than in the controls and MPV was relatively higher in cases however did not show statistical significance. In addition, 16 patients were found to have deranged thrombophilic risk factors. Among these, 8 cases had inherited risk factors (2: FVL; 5: PC; 1: PS) and 8 cases had acquired risk factors (2: APL; and 5: multiple factors and one case had both FVL mutation and APL positivity). The PDW and PCT together with PC were found to significantly differ in SVT cases than in controls, particularly in idiopathic cases. It may be worthwhile to explore the utility of PI's as a potential risk factor in SVT. Abstract
Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a heterogenous disorder in which the formation of a thrombus results in the retinal venous system narrowing and obstructing venous return from the retinal circulation. The pathogenesis of RVO remains uncertain, but it is believed to be multifactorial and to depend on both local and systemic factors, which can be divided into vascular, platelet, and hypercoagulable factors. The vascular factors include dyslipidaemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes mellitus. Regarding the platelet factors, platelet function, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) play key roles in the diagnosis of retinal vein occlusion and should be monitored. Nevertheless, the role of a hypercoagulable state in retinal vein occlusion remains unclear and requires further studies. Therefore, the following article will present the risk factors of RVO associated with coagulation disorders, as well as the acquired and genetic risk factors of thrombophilia. According to Virchow’s triad, all factors mentioned above lead to thrombus formation, which causes pathophysiological changes inside venous vessels in the fundus of the eye, which in turn results in the vessel occlusion. Therefore, a diagnosis of retinal vein occlusion should be based on both eye examination and general examination, including laboratory tests.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conventional coagulation assays (CCAs) are of limited value in the assessment of coagulation status in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We aimed to compare thromboelastography (TEG) and CCAs in identifying DVT and evaluating coagulation status in DVT patients. METHODS Sixty-six patients diagnosed with DVT and forty healthy controls were enrolled. Blood samples were collected within 4 h of patients' admission to hospital before any operation and tested by TEG and CCAs. TEG and CCA parameters were compared between DVT patients and controls. The ability of each parameter in identifying DVT was assessed. Pearson's correlation was used to determine the correlation between TEG and CCA parameters among the study population. RESULTS TEG showed significant differences between DVT patients and controls, indicating a hypercoagulable tendency in patients suffering from DVT. In contrast, no significant difference regarding CCAs was observed between the DVT and control group. Furthermore, TEG displayed a better capacity in identifying DVT than CCAs. In addition, Pearson's correlation analysis showed TEG and CCA parameters had few correlations. CONCLUSION TEG has advantages in identifying DVT and detecting hypercoagulability, and provides a better insight in evaluating coagulation status in patients with DVT than CCAs.

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity is increasing and progressively influencing physician-patient interactions. While there is a sizable amount of data demonstrating that obesity is a state of low-grade inflammation, to our knowledge, there is no single review summarizing its effects on hematologic parameters and thrombotic risk. We performed a literature search which largely surfaced observational studies, with a few systematic reviews and meta-analyses of these studies. We took care to review the mechanisms driving an inflammatory state and obesity's effect on white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, and thrombotic risk. There is an observed relative, and sometimes absolute leukocytosis driven by this inflammatory state. Obesity is also associated with increased platelet counts and an increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Lastly, the association between obesity, iron deficiency (ID), and red blood cell counts may be present but remains uncertain. Recognizing the above associations may provide clinicians with reassurance regarding otherwise unexplained hematologic abnormalities in obese individuals. We hope this review will prompt future studies to further understand the underlying mechanisms driving these abnormalities and identify modifiable risk factors and potential therapeutic targets to prevent the development of probable obesity-associated conditions with significant morbidity and mortality, such as ID and VTE.

Background The aim of this study was to investigate whether routine complete blood count parameters such as the mean platelet volume, red cell distribution width, white blood cell and platelet counts, and novel inflammatory biomarkers such as platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio could be used as the predictors of acute deep vein thrombosis. Methods This retrospective study included a total of 68 patients (29 males, 39 females; mean age 55.2±1.6 years; range, 22 to 80 years) with acute lower extremity deep vein thrombosis and 34 healthy controls (15 males, 19 females; mean age 52.8±2.5 years; range, 21 to 77 years) without acute lower extremity deep vein thrombosis between March 2016 and August 2018. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the participant and laboratory data including complete blood count parameters were recorded. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify significant predictors of deep vein thrombosis. Results Demographic and clinical characteristics were similar between the groups. According to the univariate analysis, platelet count and red cell distribution width were found to be significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group. However, the red cell distribution width was not considered a significant predictor of acute deep vein thrombosis. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet count were significant predictors of acute deep vein thrombosis. Conclusion Our study results show that the platelet-tolymphocyte ratio may be a useful biomarker to support the diagnosis of acute deep vein thrombosis.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to investigate the role of platelet parameters including mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet count (PC) in the pathogenesis of penile arteriogenic erectile dysfunction (ED) and to evaluate the association between the platelet parameters and arteriogenic ED. There were 244 patients with ED (based on the International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF]-5 ≤21) and 60 healthy controls (IIEF-5 >21) enrolled. All participants were asked to undergo a laboratory examination, and penile vascular function was evaluated using penile color Doppler ultrasonography (pDUS). Among these ED patients, 24 patients with no abnormality on nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) and 84 with normal vasculature or mixed vascular abnormalities were excluded. The other patients were classified into three groups as follows: control ( n = 60), arteriogenic ED ( n = 99), and venous leakage ( n = 37) groups. MPV and PC were significantly higher in the arteriogenic ED group compared with the venous and control groups ( P < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the area under the curve for MPV to predict arteriogenic ED was 0.707. MPV ≥9.65 fl was recognized as a cut-off value for potential arteriogenic ED (sensitivity: 47.5%; specificity: 91.7%). A significant inverse correlation was detected between MPV and 10-min peak systolic velocity (PSV) ( r = -0.34; P < 0.001) in the arteriogenic ED group. These findings suggest that the MPV might be a powerful indicator to predict and diagnose arteriogenic ED, and MPV may be a marker for ED when using pDUS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between mean platelet volume (MPV) and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in hypertensive patients. DESIGN Hospital-based, retrospective, case control design. PARTICIPANTS The sample group consisted of 100 patients with a known history of hypertension and who are diagnosed with CRVO. The control group consisted of 100 age and sex-matched patients with the sample group and who had a sole history of hypertension without any other systemic diseases and the best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in both the eyes. METHODS CRVO was diagnosed based on clinical examination. All cases and control subjects underwent complete ocular examination. MPV, platelet count, hemoglobin, white blood cell count and hematocrit parameters were recorded for both groups. The data of patients with CRVO was compared with the control subjects. Confidence interval was set at 95% with a P-value of < 0.05. RESULTS MPV was significantly higher among hypertensive cases diagnosed with CRVO when compared with the hypertensive control group (8.059 ± 0.016, 7.442 ± 0.15 fL respectively; P < 0.001). The platelet count was lower in the control group, but the difference was not significant. The systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in the sample group. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated that MPV values were significantly higher in patients with CRVO, suggesting that increased MPV may contribute to the development of CRVO.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation is associated with an increased risk of thrombotic events and complete blood count (CBC) is an easily measured test. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of CBC relative parameters including mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT). PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 115 patients with unprovoked DVT of the lower extremities and 105 controls were recruited in this study. Blood samples were drawn from all participants to obtain the concentrations of CBCs and D-dimers. RESULTS MPVs (P = 0.044), PLRs (P = 0.005), MPVLRs (P = 0.001), and NLRs (P < 0.0001) were significantly higher in acute DVT patients compared to controls. The MPV was inversely correlated with platelet count (P < 0.0001) and the NLR was positively associated with D-dimers (P = 0.002) and the PLR (P < 0.0001). Notably, on multivariate logistic regression analysis, NLRs and D-dimers were independent risk factors of acute DVT (OR: 1.889, P = 0.024; OR: 1.009, P < 0.0001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS MPV, PLR, MPVLR, and NLR have potential diagnostic values for patients with unprovoked DVT. NLR is an independent risk factor related to DVT.

Abstract
Our objective for this study was to discuss the usability of mean platelet volume, which is associated with numerous vascular pathologies, in the early diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia. Acute mesenteric ischemia is an uncommon, life-threatening clinical condition mostly seen in the elderly. Early diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia and correction of blood circulation before necrosis occurs are important factors affecting prognosis. A total of 95 patients who underwent emergency surgery for acute mesenteric ischemia and 90 healthy volunteers as control group were included in this study. Age, gender, hemoglobin values, white blood cell counts, mean platelet volume, and platelet counts are recorded for evaluation. The mean platelet volume values were significantly higher in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia than in the controls (9.4 ± 1.1 fL and 7.4 ± 1.4 fL, respectively; P < 0.001). Receiver-operating characteristic analysis demonstrated a cutoff value of mean platelet volume as 8.1 fL (area under the curve, 0.862), a sensitivity of 83.2%, and a specificity of 80%. As a result, in the patients who are admitted to the hospital with acute nonspecific abdominal pain and suspected of having acute mesenteric ischemia, high mean platelet volume values in routine hemograms support the diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia.

Abstract
Objective. Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a disease, usually seen in elderly people and accompanied by comorbid diseases. Mean platelet volume (MPV), the significant indicator of platelet activation and function, is associated with AMI. In this study, we considered that we can use MPV as a reliable indicator in the diagnosis of AMI. Methods. This study was conducted among AMI patients with two control groups. Age, gender, MPV, platelet count, concomitant diseases, abdominal computed tomography, and patient outcomes were recorded for evaluation. Control group I contained 41 healthy patients whose ages-genders were matched. Control group II contained 41 patients with no AMI, whose ages-genders-concomitant diseases were matched. Results. Of the total 41 AMI patients, 22 were female and 19 were male. The average age of them was 72.12 ± 13.2 (44–91) years. MPV was significantly increased in the AMI (p = 0.001) and control group II (p < 0.001) in comparison with healthy control groups. In the comparison of the AMI patients with their matched controls for concomitant diseases, no statistical difference was found in the MPV values. Conclusion. MPV may be used as an indicator of AMI only if the patient has no concomitant diseases. The existence of a concomitant disease brings into question the reliability of high MPV values as a suitable indicator.

Abstract
Aging is associated with an increased incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), resulting in significant morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Platelet hyperactivation is linked to aging-related VTE. However, the mechanisms through which aging enhances platelet activation and susceptibility to VTE are poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling is essential for aging-related platelet hyperactivation and VTE. mTORC1 was hyperactivated in platelets and megakaryocytes (MKs) from aged mice, accompanied by elevated mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet activation. Inhibition of mTORC1 with rapamycin led to a significant reduction in susceptibility to experimental deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in aged mice (P < .01). To ascertain the specific role of platelet mTORC1 activation in DVT, we generated mice with conditional ablation of the mTORC1-specific component gene Raptor in MKs and platelets (Raptor knockout). These mice developed markedly smaller and lighter thrombi, compared with wild-type littermates (P < .01) in experimental DVT. Mechanistically, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production with aging induced activation of mTORC1 in MKs and platelets, which, in turn, enhanced bone marrow MK size, MPV, and platelet activation to promote aging-related VTE. ROS scavenger administration induced a significant decrease (P < .05) in MK size, MPV, and platelet activation in aged mice. Our findings collectively demonstrate that mTORC1 contributes to enhanced venous thrombotic susceptibility in aged mice via elevation of platelet size and activation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelets play an important role in the pathogenesis of pulmonary embolism (PE). We aimed to investigate whether there is a correlation between platelet distribution width (PDW) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with PE. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study using 126 COPD patients with PE and 51 COPD patients without PE. Blood biomarkers, including PDW and d-dimer, were included. Odds ratios (OR) associated with PDW and interactions with d-dimer, SpO2 were estimated for PE. RESULTS PDW was higher in the COPD patients with PE group (p = 0.007). A higher PDW had a significantly increased risk of PE than a lower PDW (adjusted OR 2.724, 95% CI: 1.290-5.753). CONCLUSION PDW are elevated in COPD patients with PE and are associated with the risk of PE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower limb cellulitis is an infectious disease that has serious complications unless it is treated. OBJECTIVES In this pilot study, we evaluated whether levels of YKL-40, an acute-phase reactant, and mean platelet volume (MPV), which occurs secondary to inflammation in cellulitis, increase compared to healthy subjects. We also aimed to investigate the association between YKL-40 and MPV in the prognosis of the patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 55 patients with cellulitis (23 men and 32 women) and a similar age group of 46 healthy individuals (22 men and 24 women) were included in the study. Cellulitis was diagnosed according to guideline. Serum YKL-40 levels, MPV, C-reactive protein (CRP), and other biochemical values of both groups were compared. RESULTS YKL-40 levels (52.2±34.5 ng/mL vs 34.6±18.0 ng/mL, P=0.004), MPV (7.7±1.0 fL vs 6.9±0.7 fL, P<0.001), and CRP (9.5±8.2 mg/dL vs 0.7±0.6 mg/dL, P<0.001) were significantly higher in the patients with cellulitis than the control. The mean recovery time (RT) of the patients was 22.6±6.9 days. We found that YKL-40 (odds ratio [OR] 0.1, confidence interval [Cl] 0.028-0.191, P=0.009) and MPV (OR 2.4, Cl 0.254-4.578, P=0.029) have an independent association with RT. CONCLUSION YKL-40 and MPV values were correlated with higher CRP in the cellulitis group than in controls. According to these results, increased YKL-40 and MPV levels might be a prognostic factor for cellulitis in patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency and a high mean platelet volume (MPV) are related to cardiovascular disease. We investigated whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with high MPV. METHODS This study included 434 patients without chronic disease who were not taking vitamin D or calcium supplements. Vitamin D was measured by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay on the Architect-I2000 system (Abbott Diagnostics, USA), and MPV was measured on the Cell-Dyn Ruby analyzer (Abbott Diagnostics). Patients were divided into Groups 1 (138 [men/women, 46/92]), 2 (148 [men/women, 54/94]), and 3 (148 [men/women, 50/98]) according to vitamin D levels of <10 ng/mL, 10-20 ng/mL, and >20 ng/mL, respectively. RESULTS The vitamin D level in Group 1 (7.7±1.9 ng/mL) was lower than that in Group 2 (15.1±1.6 ng/mL, P<0.001) and Group 3 (25.6±6.3 ng/mL, P<0.001). The MPV in Group 3 (7.5±1.0 fL) was lower than that in Group 1 (8.1±1.1 fL, P<0.001) and Group 2 (7.9±1.0 fL, P=0.009). Linear regression analysis showed that low levels of vitamin D (β=-0.109, P=0.019) was independently associated with increased MPV. CONCLUSIONS There was a strong association between a low vitamin D level and a high MPV; therefore, vitamin D deficiency may be associated with increased MPV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the diagnostic importance of mean platelet volume (MPV) on acute pulmonary embolism (APE) in the emergency Department (ED). METHODS Subjects were selected from patients admitted to ED with clinically suspected APE. Demographic, anthropometric and serologic data were collected for each patient. RESULTS A total of 315 consecutive patients were analyzed, including 150 patients (53.44 ± 15.14 y; 92 men/58 women) in APE group and 165 patients (49.80 ±13.76y; 94 men/71 women) in the control group. MPV in the APE group was significantly higher than in the control group (9.42±1.22 fl vs. 8.04±0.89 fl, p<0.0001). The best cut-off values for MPV when predicting APE in patients with clinically suspected APE presenting at the ED were 8.55 fl (sensitivity 82.2%; specificity 52.3%). CONCLUSIONS MPV is a helpful parameter for the diagnosis of APE in ED, for the first time in the literature.

Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to investigate the mean platelet volume (MPV) of patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Methods. Hundred and ninty-three patients with the diagnosis of RVO and 83 healthy control subjects were included in this retrospective study. Retinal vein occlusion was diagnosed based on clinical examination. All patients and control subjects underwent complete ocular examination. MPV, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and platelet count of the participants were recorded. The data of patients with RVO was compared with the control subjects. Results. Patients with RVO had significantly higher MPV values (8.19 ± 1.22 fL) compared with the control subjects (7.68 ± 1.11 fL) (P = 0.004). No significant difference was found in platelet counts between RVO group and the control group (275.77 ± 70.87 109/L and 261.96 ± 59.40 109/L, resp., P = 0.161), Mean platelet volume was an independent predictor of RVO (odds ratio (OR) = 1.43; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.09–1.89; P = 0.011). Conclusion. Our results demonstrated that the MPV values were significantly higher in patients with RVO, suggesting that larger platelets may contribute to the pathogenesis of the RVOs.

Abstract
It is uncertain whether thrombocytosis without underlying myeloproliferative diseases is associated with an increased risk of acute pulmonary embolism (PE). We investigated the relationship between thrombocytosis and risk of symptomatic acute PE, and whether Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) was reliable in predicting mortality of acute PE. This multicentre registry study involved a total of 609,367 critically ill patients admitted to 160 intensive care units (ICUs) in Australia or New Zealand between 2006 and 2011. Forward stepwise logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between risk of acute PE and platelet counts on intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Acute PE (n=3387) accounted for 0.9% of all emergency ICU admissions. Over 20% of all PE required mechanical ventilation, 4.2% had cardiac arrest, and the mortality was high (14.8%). Thrombocytosis, defined by a platelet count >500x10⁹ per litre, occurred in 2.1% of the patients and was more common in patients with acute PE than other diagnoses (3.4 vs. 2.0%). The platelet counts explained about 4.5% of the variability and had a linear relationship with the risk of acute PE (odds ratio 1.19 per 100x10⁹ per litre increment in platelet count, 95% confidence interval 1.06-1.34), after adjusting for other covariates. The PESI had a reasonable discriminative ability (area under receiver-operating-characteristic curve = 0.78) and calibration to predict mortality across a wide range of severity of acute PE. In summary, thrombocytosis was associated with an increased risk of symptomatic acute PE. PESI was useful in predicting mortality across a wide range of severity of acute PE.

Abstract
The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of mean platelet volume (MPV) and D-dimer for acute deep venous thromboembolism (DVT). Two hundred and fifty six patients who presented to the emergency or cardiovascular surgery department with suspected lower limb DVT were retrospectively recruited. Plasma levels of MPV, platelet count, and D-dimer were obtained and duplex sonography examination was performed for all patients. Eighty four patients had acute DVT which was diagnosed by duplex ultrasonography. MPV was significantly higher in patients with DVT than in those without DVT (p < 0.01). The mean MPV was 7.97 ± 17.8 and 7.58 ± 0.87 fL in patients with DVT and without DVT, respectively (p < 0.01). D-dimer was significantly higher in patients with DVT (p < 0.01). For all the patients, a positive MPV when the cut-off value was 7.3 fL, had 69.7 % sensitivity and 43.9 % specificity. D-dimer (with a cut-off value of 0.5 μg/mL) had 82.9 % sensitivity and 32.7 % specificity. In case of combination of MPV and D-dimer, the specificity exceeded (65.9 %) despite the reduction in sensitivity (59.2 %). Elevated MPV was found to be associated with acute DVT and high levels of MPV might increase the specificity of D-dimer for exclusion of DVT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to discuss the possibility of mean platelet volume (MPV) being a new risk factor in the etiology of portal venous thrombosis (PVT). METHODS Study participants were categorized into 2 different groups: group I, control group (n = 35) and group II, PVT group (n = 34). Demographic data and MPV values were recorded retrospectively. RESULTS No differences were determined between the 2 groups regarding hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and smoking (P > .05). The average hemoglobin levels were 10.8 ± 2.1 in group II and 14.0 ± 1.7 in group I (P < .001). Although the MPV levels of group II patients were 8.2 ± 0.52, the average level in group I was determined as 7.8 ± 0.62 (P = .012). In the performed receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the cutoff value for patients with PVT for MPV was determined as 7.9 (area under curve: 0.674), sensitivity as 70.6%, and specificity as 65.7% (P = .013). CONCLUSION The current study shows that MPV is significantly higher in patients with PVT than in the control group.
