Violence Toward and by Youth: Part I: Looking for the "Whys"

Violence is a public health crisis. It is especially concerning when it involves youth, whether they be victims, perpetrators, or observers. Part 1 of this two-part series categorizes the types of violence toward and by youth. There is a great deal of information on the prevalence of violence, mostly related to school shootings. However, the literature provides limited information on the antecedents of violent behaviors, and there is a dearth of information on "why" youth engage in violence. This is the unanswered question that drives Part 1 of this series. The beginning steps to understand "why" are viewed through the lens of a modified ABC Model (antecedent, behavior, consequence). Interventions for youth violence will be explored in Part 2.

FACES: An Advocacy Intervention for African American Parents of Children With Autism

Children with autism and their families often face challenges accessing early intervention and related services. African American children face additional challenges due to disparities in diagnoses and access to services. These disparities present a great need for parent advocacy to combat culturally insensitive service delivery and strained parent-professional partnerships. In this sequential mixed methods study, we piloted a 6-week parent-training intervention (FACES) among African American parents of children with autism and evaluated participants' empowerment, advocacy, and partnerships pre- and postintervention. Results indicated that parents' advocacy, sense of empowerment, and community support were strengthened, following the FACES program. Participants also described the FACES intervention as socially valid. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Use and Medication Adherence Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Systematic Review of the Literature

The appropriate use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by men who have sex with men (MSM) can be highly effective at reducing HIV transmission. Our review examined prevalence estimates, sexual behaviors, and medication adherence among MSM PrEP users in high-income countries. Articles published between January 2008 and December 2018 were identified through Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL, and CENTRAL. The search identified 643 publications, of which 52 were included in the final synthesis. We found that PrEP initiation was not consistently associated with significant changes in sexual behavior, but some users may have risk compensated. A minority of MSM used PrEP, and they had high levels of adherence. PrEP-related stigma, side effects, and psychosocial factors lead to nonadherence. A daily routine, pill boxes, alarms/texts, and education can promote adherence. Further research is required to examine PrEP impact on sexual behavior and factors that influence adherence in high-risk MSM subpopulations.
