Abstract
The gut microbiome has been reported to be associated with nighttime light (NTL) exposure and temperament. However, the specific role of infant gut microbiome plays in NTL exposure and temperament is unclear. This study investigated the potential mediating role of infants' gut microbiome in correlations between NTL exposure and temperament. Demographic information, stool samples, and temperament scores were collected from 40 infants. Temperament was evaluated using the Infants Behavior Questionnaire-Revised (IBQ-R). The gut microbiota was analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing. Cumulative and lagged effects of NTL exposure were calculated based on residential address (NTLpoint) and a concentric 1 km radius buffer zone around the address (NTL1000m), respectively. Mediation models were utilized for assessing the mediating effects of the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome of infants with higher fear scores was characterized by a higher abundance of Akkermansia and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and a lower abundance of Bacteroides. Mediation models indicated Akkermansia played a full mediating role in associations between NTLpoint, NTL1000m and fear in specific time periods. Genus Akkermansia explained 24.46% and 33.50% of associations between fear and cumulative exposure to NTLpoint and NTL1000m, respectively. This study provides evidence for the mediating role of Akkermansia between NTL exposure and fear. However, further experimental is required to elucidate the mechanisms through which the gut microbiome mediates between NTL exposure and temperament in infants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND PM2.5 and its chemical components increase health risks and are associated with depression and gut microbiota. However, there is still limited evidence on whether gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) mediate the association between PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of maternal gut microbiota in correlations between short-term exposure to PM2.5, short-term exposure to PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. METHODS Demographic information and stool samples were collected from 75 pregnant women in their third trimester. Their exposure to PM2.5 and PM2.5 chemical components was measured. Participants were divided into the non-antenatal depression group or the antenatal depression group according to the cut-off of 10 points on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The gut microbiota were analyzed using the 16 S rRNA-V3/V4 gene sequence, and the concentration of PM2.5 and its chemical components was calculated using the Tracking Air Pollution in China (TAP) database. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze SCFAs in stool samples. In order to assess the mediating effects of gut microbiota and SCFAs, mediation models were utilized. RESULTS There were significant differences between gut microbial composition and SCFAs concentrations between the non-antenatal depression group and the antenatal depression group. PM2.5 and its chemical components were positively associated with EPDS scores and negatively associated with genera Enterococcus and Enterobacter. Genera Candidatus_Soleaferrea (β = -7.21, 95%CI -11.00 to -3.43, q = 0.01) and Enterococcus (β = -2.37, 95%CI -3.87 to -0.87, q = 0.02) were negatively associated with EPDS scores, indicating their potential protective effects against antenatal depression. There was no significant association between SCFAs and EPDS scores. The mediating role of Enterococcus between different lagged periods of PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical component exposure, and antenatal depression was revealed. For instance, Enterococcus explained 29.23% (95%CI 2.16-87.13%, p = 0.04) of associations between PM2.5 exposure level at the day of sampling (lag 0) and EPDS scores. CONCLUSION Our study highlights that Enterococcus may mediate the associations between PM2.5, PM2.5 chemical components, and antenatal depression. The mediating mechanism through which the gut microbiota influences PM2.5-induced depression in pregnant women still needs to be further studied.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nighttime light (NTL) pollution has been reported as a risk factor for human health. However, the relationship between NTL and gut microbiota has not been reported in pregnant women and neonates. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between NTL and gut microbial diversity and composition in mothers and their neonates. METHODS This study analyzed 44 mothers and 28 newborns. The composition of gut microbiota was evaluated using 16S rRNA V3-V4 sequencing. The monthly mean NTL exposure during pregnancy was respectively calculated based on each participant's residential address (NTLpoint) and a concentric 1 km radius buffer zone around their address (NTL1000m). The relationships between NTL exposure and gut microbiota of mothers and newborns were assessed using generalized linear models. RESULTS NTL exposure during pregnancy was not associated with alpha diversity of mothers or neonates. For mothers, results revealed that after adjusting for covariates, NTLpoint was negatively correlated with Prevotella_2 (p = 0.004, FDR-adjusted p = 0.030) and norank_o__Gastranaerophilales (p = 0.018, FDR-adjusted p = 0.049) at the genus level. In addition, Lachnospira (p = 0.036, FDR-adjusted p = 0.052) and Coprococcus_3 (p = 0.025, FDR-adjusted p = 0.052) were positively correlated with NTLpoint. The association between Coprococcus_3 (p = 0.01, FDR-adjusted p = 0.046) and NTLpoint persisted even after controlling for covariates. For neonates, Thauera was positively associated with NTLpoint (p = 0.015) and NTL1000m (p = 0.028), however, after adjusting for covariates and FDR correction, Thauera was not significantly associated with NTLpoint and NTL1000m. CONCLUSIONS This study found that NTL exposure was associated with maternal gut microbiota composition. Our findings provide a foundation for the potential impact of NTL exposure on maternal gut microbiota from a microbiological perspective. More population-based validation of the effects of NTL exposure on human gut microbiota is needed in future.

Abstract
Background Early life determinants of the development of gut microbiome composition in infants have been widely investigated; however, if early life pollutant exposures, such as tobacco or mercury, have a persistent influence on the gut microbial community, its stabilization at later childhood remains largely unknown. Objective In this exposome-wide study, we aimed at identifying the contribution of exposure to tobacco and mercury from the prenatal period to childhood, to individual differences in the fecal microbiome composition of 7-year-old children, considering co-exposure to a width of established lifestyle and clinical determinants. Methods Gut microbiome was studied by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing in 151 children at the genus level. Exposure to tobacco was quantified during pregnancy through questionnaire (active tobacco consumption, second-hand smoking -SHS) and biomonitoring (urinary cotinine) at 4 years (urinary cotinine, SHS) and 7 years (SHS). Exposure to mercury was quantified during pregnancy (cord blood) and at 4 years (hair). Forty nine other potential environmental determinants (12 at pregnancy/birth/infancy, 15 at 4 years and 22 at 7 years, such as diet, demographics, quality of living/social environment, and clinical records) were registered. We used multiple models to determine microbiome associations with pollutants including multi-determinant multivariate analysis of variance and linear correlations (wUnifrac, Bray-Curtis and Aitchison ß-diversity distances), single-pollutant permutational multivariate analysis of variance adjusting for co-variates (Aitchison), and multivariable association model with single taxa (MaAsLin2; genus). Sensitivity analysis was performed including genetic data in a subset of 107 children. Results Active smoking in pregnancy was systematically associated with microbiome composition and ß-diversity (R2 2-4%, p < 0.05, Aitchison), independently of other co-determinants. However, in the adjusted single pollutant models (PERMANOVA), we did not find any significant association. An increased relative abundance of Dorea and decreased relative abundance of Akkermansia were associated with smoking during pregnancy (q < 0.05). Discussion Our findings suggest a long-term sustainable effect of prenatal tobacco exposure on the children's gut microbiota. This effect was not found for mercury exposure or tobacco exposure during childhood. Assessing the role of these exposures on the children's microbiota, considering multiple environmental factors, should be further investigated.

Abstract
Particulate matter (PM) is an important component of air pollutants and is associated with various health risks. However, the impact of PM on toddlers' gut microbiota is rarely investigated. This study aimed to assess the cumulative and lagged effects of varying-sized PMs on toddlers' gut microbiota. We collected demographic information, stool samples, and exposure to PM from 36 toddlers aged 2-3 years. The toddlers were divided into warm season group and cooler season group according to the collection time of stool samples. The gut microbiota was processed and analyzed using 16S rRNA V3-V4 gene regions. The concentration of PM was calculated using China High Air Pollutants (CHAP) database. To assess the mixed effects of varying-sized PM, multiple-PM models were utilized. There were significant differences between the community composition, α- and β-diversity between two groups. In multiple-PM models, there was a significant effect of weight quantile sum (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) on α-diversity indices. In weight quantile sum models, after adjusting for a priori confounders, we found a negative effect of weight quantile sum on Enterococcus (β = -0.134, 95% CI -0.263 to -0.006), positive effects of weight quantile sum on unclassified_f__Ruminococcaceae (β = 0.247, 95% CI 0.102 to 0.393), Ruminococcus_1 (β = 0.444, 95% CI 0.238 to 0.650), unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae (β = 0.278, 95% CI 0.099 to 0.458), and Family_XIII_AD_3011_group (β = 0.254, 95% CI 0.086 to 0.422) in WSG and CSG. In lagged weight quantile sum models, the correlation between lag time PM levels and the gut microbiota showed seasonal trends, and weights of PM changed with lag periods. This is the first study to highlight that cumulative and lagged effects of PMs synergistically affect the diversities (α- and β-diversity) and abundance of the gut microbiota in toddlers. Further research is needed to explore the mediating mechanism of varying-sized PMs exposure on the gut microbiota in toddlers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Smoking during pregnancy and/or not breastfeeding have considerable negative health outcomes for the mother and infant. This descriptive and cross-sectional study determined the relationship between the prediction of smoking cessation success in pregnant women and their breastfeeding attrition prediction during lactation. The other aim of the study was to determine the predictor of smoking cessation success and the factors affecting breastfeeding attrition prediction. METHODS The present study was conducted with 131 smoking pregnant women. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale, and the Breastfeeding Attrition Prediction Tool. RESULTS A statistically significant and positive correlation was revealed between the Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale and the positive breastfeeding attitude (r = 0.349, P < .01). Of the change in positive breastfeeding attitudes, 14.7% was explained by the prediction of smoking cessation success (adjusted R2 = 0.147). CONCLUSION The study revealed that the prediction of smoking cessation success increased with an increase in the positive breastfeeding attitude of smoking pregnant women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The mechanism of levels of inflammatory cytokines that affects brain function and mood through gut microbiota has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the potential mediating role of gut microbiota between maternal inflammatory cytokines levels and prenatal depression. DESIGN There were 29 women in the prenatal depression group and 27 women in the control group enrolled in this study. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score of 10 was considered the cut-off value for prenatal depression. We collected demographic information, stool and blood samples. The gut microbiota was profiled using V3-V4 gene sequence of 16S rRNA, and the concentration of inflammatory cytokines were analyzed. The mediation model was analyzed by using the model 4 in the process procedure for SPSS. RESULTS There were significance differences in the concentration of interleukin-1beta (IL-1β)(Z = -2.383, P = 0.017) and IL-17A (Z = -2.439, P = 0.015) between the prenatal depression group and control group. There was no significant difference in α- diversity and β-diversity between the two groups. Intestinibacter (OR: 0.012; 95% CI, 0.001-0.195) and Escherichia_Shigella (OR: 0.103; 95% CI, 0.014-0.763) were protective factors for prenatal depression, while Tyzzerella (OR: 17.941; 95% CI, 1.764-182.445) and Unclassified_f_Ruminococcaceae (OR: 22.607; 95% CI, 1.242-411.389) were risk factors. And Intestinibacter play a mediation effect between IL-17A and prenatal depression. CONCLUSION Maternal gut microbiota is a significant mediator of the relationship between inflammatory cytokines and prenatal depression. Further research is still needed in exploring the mediating mechanisms of gut microbiota between inflammatory cytokines and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reducing preventable adverse maternal and offspring outcomes is a global priority. The causes of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes are complex with multidimensional influencing factors. In addition, the Covid-19 epidemic has had a significant psychological and physical impact on people. China is now stepping into the post-epidemic era. We are curious about the psychological and physical situation of maternity in China at this stage. Therefore, we plan to initiate a prospective longitudinal study to investigate the multidimensional influences and mechanisms that affect maternal and offspring health. METHOD We will recruit eligible pregnant women at Renmin Hospital of Hubei Province, China. The expected sample size is 1490. We will assess socio-demographics, Covid-19 related information, social capital, sleep, mental health and medical records, including clinical examination and biochemical tests. Eligible pregnant women will be enrolled in the study with less than 14 weeks of gestation. Participants will receive a total of nine follow-up visits between mid-pregnancy and one year postpartum. The offspring will be followed up at birth, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and one year. In addition, a qualitative study will be conducted to understand the underlying causes that affect maternal and offspring health outcomes. DISCUSSION This is the first longitudinal study of maternity in Wuhan, Hubei Province which integrates physical, psychological and social capital dimensions. Wuhan is the first city to be affected by Covid-19 in China. As China moves into the post-epidemic era, this study will provide us with a better understanding of the long-term impact of the epidemic on maternal and offspring health outcomes. We will implement a range of rigorous measures to enhance participants' retention rate and ensure the quality of data. The study will provide empirical results for maternal health in the post-epidemic era.

Abstract
Cigarette smoke is a classic risk factor for many diseases. The microbiota has been recently indicated as a new, major player in human health. Its deregulation-dysbiosis-is considered a new risk factor for several illnesses. Some studies highlight a cross-interaction between these two risk factors-smoke and dysbiosis-that may explain the pathogenesis of some diseases. We searched the keywords "smoking OR smoke AND microbiota" in the title of articles on PubMed®, UptoDate®, and Cochrane®. We included articles published in English over the last 25 years. We collected approximately 70 articles, grouped into four topics: oral cavity, airways, gut, and other organs. Smoke may impair microbiota homeostasis through the same harmful mechanisms exerted on the host cells. Surprisingly, dysbiosis and its consequences affect not only those organs that are in direct contact with the smoke, such as the oral cavity or the airways, but also involve distant organs, such as the gut, heart, vessels, and genitourinary tract. These observations yield a deeper insight into the mechanisms implicated in the pathogenesis of smoke-related diseases, suggesting a role of dysbiosis. We speculate that modulation of the microbiota may help prevent and treat some of these illnesses.

Abstract
Background Maternal smoking is suspected to have negative impacts on breastfeeding, such as decreasing the quantity of breast milk, and reducing vitamin and fat concentrations in the milk in the late lactation period. Cigarette and water pipe tobacco products are widely used in Jordan. We aimed to estimate the association between use of different tobacco products and the rates of current breastfeeding. Methods Data from Jordan’s Population and Family Health Surveys 2012 and 2017–18 were examined. Last-born, living children, aged < 25 months, from singleton births, ever breastfed, and living with their mother were included. The key outcome variables were the current breastfeeding (during last 24 h) and tobacco usage status [water pipe tobacco (hookah or narghile) and/or cigarette tobacco]. Complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of the current breastfeeding with maternal smoking status. Results Overall, 6726 infants were included in the study. The current breastfeeding rate in infants aged 0–6 months was 87%, compared with 43.9% in infants aged 12–17 months and 19.4% in infants aged 18–24 months. Overall, 4.4% had mothers who smoked cigarettes, 5.4% smoked water pipe, and 1.6% both cigarettes and water pipe. The proportion of breastfed infants in non-smoking mothers was 57.7% and, those in smoke water pipe, cigarette and both tobacco products were 55.4, 44.9, and 51.0% respectively. Univariate analysis revealed that women cigarette smokers had a lower odds ratio (OR) for current breastfeeding (OR 0.60, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 0.39, 0.92). Multivariate analysis revealed that maternal cigarette smoking was associated with a lower odds ratio for current breastfeeding compared with mothers who smoked neither water pipe nor cigarettes (AOR 0.51, 95% Cl 0.30, 0.87). Conclusions These results indicate that maternal smoking is associated with termination of breastfeeding, suggesting that structured training should be organized for healthcare professionals, expectant mothers and the general public about the association between maternal smoking and cessation of lactation.
