Abstract
Purpose To determine the etiology and anatomic localization of uveitis, the frequency of intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation, and the type of secondary glaucoma and to assess the medical, surgical, and postoperative complications in adult and pediatric patients with acute or chronic uveitis. Methods A total of 307 eyes of 186 patients who were followed up in the Uvea-Behçet Unit of the Ophthalmology Department, Erciyes University, Turkey, were included in the study. Demographic, ocular, and systemic data were recorded; ophthalmological examinations were performed; and recurrences and complications of uveitis were identified. The eyes with IOP over 22 mmHg, types of secondary glaucoma, their etiologies, efficiency of medical and surgical treatments, and complications were recorded. Results The mean age was 33 ± 12 years (range: 6-65). Of the 186 patients, diagnoses were as follows: idiopathic uveitis in 84 (45.2%), Behçet disease in 65 (34.9%), ankylosing spondylitis in eight (4.3%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis in five (2.7%), herpetic keratouveitis in three (1.6%), Fuchs iridocyclitis in three (1.6%), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome in three (1.6%), tuberculosis uveitis in three (1.6%), Crohn disease in three (1.6%), ocular toxoplasmosis in two (1.1%), multiple sclerosis in two (1.1%), Lyme disease in two (1.1%), rheumatoid arthritis in two (1.1%) and tubulointerstitial nephritis in one patient (0.5%). Secondary glaucoma was detected in 67 (21.9%) of 307 eyes, which developed in 13.7% and 26.8% of the eyes with acute and chronic uveitis, respectively. Of 67 eyes, it was open-angle glaucoma in 58 (86.5%), angle-closure glaucoma in six (9.0%), and neovascular glaucoma in three (4.5%). Control of IOP was achieved by medical therapy in 53 eyes (79.1%) and by surgery in 12 eyes (17.9%), whereas evisceration was required in two eyes (3.0%). Laser iridotomy was performed in four eyes (33.4%), trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C (MMC) in six eyes (50.0%), laser iridotomy plus trabeculectomy with MMC in one eye (8.3%), and express mini shunt implantation in one eye (8.3%). After surgery, IOP was controlled without anti-glaucomatous agents in six eyes (50%) and with anti-glaucomatous agents in the remaining six eyes (50.0%). Conclusion Secondary glaucoma is one of the most important complications of uveitis and may result in severe visual impairment. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent these potential complications.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess the influence of different regimes of patient's preparation before trabeculectomy on the markers of healing process in Tenon's fibroblast cultures.The studied group consisted of 66 patients with open angle glaucoma undergoing primary trabeculectomy. The patients were divided into 5 groups with different regimes of preparation before the surgery based on application or withdrawal of topical antiglaucoma medications and steroids (G1-patients using antiglaucoma drops until the day of the surgery; G2-patients using antiglaucoma drops until the day of the surgery and additionally dexamethasone for 4 weeks before surgery; G3-patients who stopped using antiglaucoma drops 4 weeks before the surgery and introduced dexamethasone for 4 weeks before surgery; G4-patients who stopped using antiglaucoma drops 4 weeks before the surgery; G5-control group, patients with newly diagnosed glaucoma in whom trabeculectomy was the first treatment option without medical treatment). During trabeculectomy the samples of Tenon's capsule were obtained. Tenon fibroblasts were isolated directly from the explants to test their proliferation ability and the level of released healing markers. Following factors typical of healing process were evaluated using commercially available ELISA kits: IL 1-β, IL-6, IL-8, VEGF-A, TGF-β1 and MMP-9. Concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6 and TGF-β1 were significantly higher in the group obtaining antiglaucoma drops. Additionally, in this group the fibroblasts revealed the highest proliferation potential, indicating the active healing process. The levels of IL-8, VEGF-A and MMP-9 were similar between the groups. Our study shows that for the best conjunctival anti-inflammatory control, the most influential factor is the withdrawal of antiglaucoma medications.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the reactivation of Varicella-Zoster Virus Anterior Uveitis after YAG laser peripheral iridotomy. CASE REPORT A 69-year-old woman referred with unilateral, anterior uveitis associated with decreased corneal sensation and increased intraocular pressure 5 days after YAG laser peripheral iridotomy. The impression of herpetic anterior uveitis reactivation followed by YAG PI confirmed by polymerase chain reaction of aqueous humor by detecting varicella zoster virus. Treatment with oral acyclovir and topical corticosteroid and cycloplegic resulted control of both the intraocular inflammation and pressure. CONCLUSION YAG PI may be a risk factor for reactivation of herpetic anterior uveitis. Prophylaxis with acyclovir may be necessary after YAG PI to prevent reactivation of herpetic anterior uveitis.

Abstract
AIM Present study was designed to evaluate protective effects of pentoxifylline and its potentiation with low dose of nitric oxide (NO) modulators in adjuvant-induced experimental arthritis in rats. METHOD Wistar rats (200-300 g, n = 8 per group) of both sexes were used in the study. On day "0" experimental arthritis was induced by injecting 0.2 ml of Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) in sub-planter region of right hind paw of animals. Pentoxifylline treatment alone and in combination with NO modulators was given (i.p.) from day 14 to 28. Various arthritic parameters were recorded and blood and joint synovial fluid was collected for biochemical analysis. RESULTS CFA inoculation significantly increases (1) arthritic index (2) ankle diameter (3) paw volume (4) histopathology score (5) serum TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β and synovial TNF-α levels (p < 0.001) (6) serum Th1 and Th2 cytokine levels g) MDA levels in rat paw tissue homogenates (7) serum NF-κB levels. Significant decrease in serum IL-10 levels and SOD activity was observed in rats after CFA inoculation. Decrease in body weight and suppressed general quality of life of CFA inoculated rats was also observed. These CFA-induced arthritic changes were significantly reversed by pentoxifylline alone and in combination with low dose of NO modulators (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION These results are suggestive of protective effects of pentoxifylline and its potentiation in combination with low dose of NO modulators. These results may provide new pharmacological therapy for management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Abstract
PURPOSE Anti-inflammatory activity of an antiglaucoma drug may be an advantage for long-term treatment of glaucoma since it may reduce the risk of treatment-related inflammatory processes in outer compartments of the eye and probably also prevent or delay progression of glaucomatous retinal neurodegeneration. In this study, the effect of GLC756, a novel mixed dopamine D 2 receptor agonist and dopamine D 1 receptor antagonist, and timolol on endo-toxin-induced cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) release in serum was examined. METHODS For endotoxin-induced TNF-alpha release, 8-week-old Lewis rats were intravenously injected with 160 microg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Salmonella typhimurium. GLC756, timolol, or betamethasone were either systemically (1 mg/kg SC for 5 days) or topically (0.4%, 0.5%, and 0.1%, respectively, 20 microL eye drops given 16 times over 48 hours in left and right eye) administered. TNF-alpha was measured in serum 2 and 48 hours after LPS induction. RESULTS A marked TNF-alpha increase in serum was found 2 hours after LPS induction. Administration of GLC756 and betamethasone, systemically and topically, decreased TNF-alpha release. However, due to large scattering of mean values only the effect of systemically administered GLC756 was statistically significant. In contrast, timolol increased TNF-alpha values stronger than LPS alone. CONCLUSIONS The significant suppression of LPS-induced TNF-alpha increase by GLC756 suggests an additional anti-inflammatory potential of the dopaminergic compound in the treatment of glaucoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE Laser iridotomy often causes bullous keratopathy; however, the mechanism is unclear. We investigated whether changes in aqueous humor hydrodynamics after laser iridotomy have any role in corneal endothelial cell loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS Porcine corneal endothelial cells were plated onto glass slides. Following 1 or 3 hours for adhesion, the endothelial cells were exposed to shear stresses (0.1-10 dyne/cm) for 15 minutes, and the number of detached cells was counted. In addition, the pressure and shear stress on corneal endothelial layer were calculated in a virtual model of laser iridotomy. RESULTS The number of detached corneal endothelial cells increased with shear stresses in a dose-dependent manner. Significant increase of rate of detached corneal endothelial cells was observed at >0.3 dyne/cm after 1-hour attachment and at 1 dyne/cm after 3-hour attachment. The maximum pressure on corneal endothelial layer was 0.007 mm Hg, which is negligible compared with intraocular pressure. However, the maximum shear stress on the corneal endothelial layer could be> dyne/cm in some conditions of laser iridotomy. CONCLUSIONS The resistance of corneal endothelial cell loss to shear stress is time dependent. Shear stress could be a cause of corneal endothelial cell loss in some conditions of laser iridotomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report recurrent herpetic keratouveitis following YAG laser peripheral iridotomy. METHODS Case report. RESULTS A 64-year-old woman with a history of dendritic keratitis underwent Nd:YAG laser peripheral iridotomy and developed geographic epithelial keratitis with stromal keratouveitis. Culture of a corneal swab grew herpes simplex virus type I. Keratouveitis subsided with acyclovir and corticosteroid therapy. CONCLUSIONS Recurrent herpetic keratouveitis may be induced by YAG laser iridotomy.
