Religiosity, Psychological Resilience, and Mental Health Among Breast Cancer Patients in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Mediating Role of Psychological Resilience in the Relationship Between Spiritual Well-Being and Supportive Care Needs in Women With Breast Cancer

Objective

The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience as part of the effect of spiritual well-being in the supportive care needs of women with breast cancer.

Materials and Methods

Cross-sectional design. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale Short Form, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and the Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form were completed women with breast cancer treated at the oncology clinic of a university hospital. For the mediation model, Bootstrap methods with PROCESS Macro were used.

Results

The study was conducted with 126 breast cancer patients. A significant negative, moderate relationship was found between supportive care needs and psychological resilience (r = -0.560). There was a significant negative, but weak relationship between supportive care needs and spiritual well-being (r = -0.385). The indirect effect of spiritual well-being on supportive care needs was significant, thus, psychological resilience was shown to have a mediating effect on the relationship between spiritual well-being and supportive care needs [b = -0.370, 95% confidence interval (- 0.5568, -0.1911)].

Conclusion

Psychological resilience appears to contribute to a reduction in supportive care needs of breast cancer patients by affecting spiritual well-being.

The validation of the Arabic version of the resilience scale 14 (RS-14)

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Nurses in Lebanon are facing multiple crises and the severity of the situation calls for an empirical examination of their resilience status. Evidence indicates that resilience can buffer the negative effect of workplace stressors on nurses and is associated with favorable patient outcomes. The objective of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the Arabic Resilience Scale-14 that was utilized to measure resilience among Lebanese nurses, METHODS: Data was collected from nurses working in health care centers using a cross-sectional survey design. We estimated the confirmatory factor analysis using the Diagonally Weighted least Squares. Fit indices for the confirmatory factor analysis model included Model chi-square, root-mean squared error of approximation and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

RESULTS

1,488 nurses were included in the analysis. The squared multiple correlations values ranged from 0.60 to 0.97 thus supporting the construct validity of the originally hypothesized five factor model (self-reliance, purpose, equanimity, perseverance, and authenticity).

CONCLUSIONS

The Arabic version of the Resilience Scale 14 tool is considered a valid tool for measuring resilience in any situation involving Arabic speaking nurses.

Factors influencing resilience in patients with advanced cancer: A cross-sectional study

Background

Advanced cancer and its treatments lead to various detrimental impacts on patients. Resilience is an important ability to adapt to such adversity, but there is limited information about its influencing factors, specifically in patients with advanced cancer.

Objective

This study aimed to examine the influence of social support, depression, anxiety, hope, optimism, spiritual well-being, religious belief, and hardiness on resilience among adults with advanced cancer.

Methods

This cross-sectional research used multi-stage sampling to select 288 participants from a university hospital and three tertiary hospitals in northern Thailand. Data were collected using a demographic data collection form, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Thai version of the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ), the Herth Hope Index (HHI), Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), Buddhist Belief Questionnaire, Health-Related Hardiness Scale (HRHS), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), from February 2021 to February 2022. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis.

Results

Depression (r = -0.47, p <0.01) and anxiety (r = -0.39, p <0.01) had a significant negative relationship with resilience. Spiritual well-being (r = 0.74, p <0.01), hope (r = 0.67, p <0.01), religious belief (r = 0.53, p <0.01), optimism (r = 0.40, p <0.01), social support (r = 0.33, p <0.01), and hardiness (r = 0.21, p <0.01) had significant positive relationships with resilience. Only hope (β = 0.29, p <0.01) and spiritual well-being (β = 0.59, p <0.01) together influenced resilience by 64.70%.

Conclusion

Spiritual well-being and hope are crucial to resilience in patients with advanced cancer. Nurses should provide spiritual support to strengthen patients' ability to adapt successfully to life with advanced cancer.

The Effect of Spirituality on Psychological Resilience in Women with Breast Cancer Who Have Received Chemotherapy: A Cross-sectional Study from Turkey

Spirituality involves all of the internal resources of the individual, including religion, the desire to live, and a commitment to life. This study was conducted to determine the effect of spirituality on psychological resilience in women with breast cancer who have received chemotherapy. The study was conducted in a chemotherapy unit between April and June 2022. The sample size of the current cross-sectional study consisted of 85 women who have received chemotherapy. For the measuring of spirituality and psychological resilience, the Spirituality Scale (SS) and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), respectively, were completed. In the current study, it was determined that there was a positive weak correlation between the mean SS total score and the mean BRS total score (r = 0.471, p < 0.05). In addition, among women with breast cancer who have received chemotherapy, spirituality accounted for 22% of the variance in psychological resilience (R² = 0.22, p < 0.05). It can also be said that the level of spirituality of women may positively affect their psychological resilience.

Does Spiritual Well-Being Affect Death Anxiety and Psychological Resilience in Cancer Patients?

This study was conducted to research the effects of spiritual well-being on death anxiety and psychological resilience in cancer patients. This cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study was carried out with 260 cancer patients who were admitted to oncology and haematology outpatient clinic of a university hospital in east of Turkey between October 2021 and April 2022. The data were collected by using "Personal Information Form", "Spiritual Well-being Scale (FACIT-sp), Death Anxiety Scale (DAS) and The Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). It was found that mean DAS total score of cancer patients was 12.51 ± 3.39, while their mean FACIT-sp total score was 26.10 ± 6.93 and their mean BRS total score was 16.1 ± 7.05. It was found that FACIT-sp total score affected DAS and BRS total score positively, while DAS total score affected BRS total score negatively (p < .001). It was found that cancer patients had moderate level of spiritual well-being and psychological resilience and high level of death anxiety. It was also found that death anxiety and psychological resilience of cancer patients increased as their spiritual well-being levels increased. Psychological resilience was found to decrease as death anxiety increased.

Predictive effect of resilience on self-efficacy during the COVID-19 pandemic: The moderating role of creativity

INTRODUCTION

To appraise the relationship and mechanism between resilience and self-efficacy in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, we proposed a model to investigate the effect of resilience on self-efficacy and the moderating effect of creativity in this regard.

METHODS

Scales that measured resilience, creative behavior, and self-efficacy were rated by 881 college students in China to establish the moderating model.

RESULTS

The results showed that resilience and self-efficacy of participating college students were positively correlated, which meant that high resilience could predict a high level of self-efficacy. Moderating analysis using the SPSS PROCESS plug-in showed that creativity was an important element of resilience that positively affected self-efficacy and that this moderating effect was more significant in participants with a high degree of creativity.

DISCUSSION

These findings can provide a better understanding of the relationship between resilience and self-efficacy in demonstrating the traumatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent mental health and academic performance.

Crisis and disaster management in the light of the Islamic approach: COVID-19 pandemic crisis as a model (a qualitative study using the grounded theory)

The current study sought to generate a theory from the data on crisis management in Islam, and also aimed to identify the strategies used by leaders in the crisis management process. The grounded theory approach was applied, which is one of the qualitative designs. The content of the verses of the Noble Qur'an and the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad that dealt with the issue of crises were analyzed. The results of the qualitative analysis of the verses of the Qur'an and the hadiths of the Prophet's noble Sunnah have resulted in four concepts that constitute a broad conceptual theory of crisis management according to the Islamic approach. These concepts are: Crisis management strategies in Islam, the stages of crisis management, the characteristics of a leader who manages crises, and the roles of a leader during the crisis management process. A number of assumptions have been made of this generated theory about Islamic crisis management model. In light of the results of this study, recommendations were formulated that indicate the necessity of training leaders in the Islamic approach to crisis management, its strategies and its scientific steps in crisis management. These results have wide applications in the field of training leaders, and also recommend future studies to verify the assumptions of the theory that emerged from the data in this study on crisis management in Islam (COVID-19 pandemic crisis as a model).

Predicting psychological service providers' empowerment in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak: A structural equation modelling analysis

This study aimed to investigate the predictors of psychological service providers' empowerment in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The researcher prepared a psychological service providers' empowerment scale that consisted of 28 items, and this scale was applied in a random sample consisting of 975 psychological service providers. The results showed that the empowerment scale has acceptable validity and reliability. The results of the exploratory factor analysis indicated that the 28 scale items saturate on seven factors, which accounted for 64.42% of the total variance of the scale: the first factor named expect psychological services effectiveness accounted for 27.86%, the second factor named self-stimulation accounted for 9.71%, the third factor named responsibilities and duties accounted for 7.12%, the fourth factor named psychological services work environment accounted for 6.51%, the fifth factor named psychological service providers' decision-making accounted for 5.37%, the sixth factor named creative psychological service provider behaviour accounted for 4.45%, and the seventh factor named psychological services confidence accounted for 3.82% of the total variance of a psychological service providers' empowerment. In order to study the ability to predict the empowerment among psychological service providers, the researcher developed a structural model for psychological service providers' empowerment and then used the structural equation model analysis. The results showed that the proposed structural model of a psychological service providers' empowerment has goodness-of-fit, and these results emphasised the ability to predict psychological service providers' empowerment by seven tested factors.
